Messi wins another award after claiming eighth Ballon d’Or

Lionel Messi has been handed Inter Miami’s MVP award for the 2023 season.

The MLS club confirmed this on their official website on Sunday.

Messi only joined the club in June after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired.

The 36-year-old has contributed 11 goals and eight assists in his first 14 matches for the club, as he inspired them to their first trophy in the form of the inaugural Leagues Cup.

He was however not able to lift them to the MLS playoffs.

Messi follows in the footsteps of Gonzalo Higuain and Lewis Morgan, who have won the Miami award in the past.

The announcement comes days after the Argentina captain secured a remarkable eighth Ballon d’Or.

Inter Miami’s play-off hopes hit in Messi’s absence

Inter Miami’s MLS play-off hopes suffered a setback as they were beaten 4-1 by Chicago Fire, with Lionel Messi missing the game through injury.

Former Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri scored twice for Fire and Maren Haile-Selassie also netted a double.

A record home crowd of 62,124 attended the match at Soldier Field in Chicago hoping to see Argentine World Cup winner and new MLS star Messi.

But the 36-year-old has only played once in seven games since 3 September.

Fire had offered a financial incentive for fans attending Wednesday’s match, saying they would give $250 (£207) credit towards “new memberships for the 2024 season” or $50 (£41) credit to “single-game ticket buyers”, with Messi set to miss the match.

They said fans would receive the credit “regardless of which players are able to make an appearance on the pitch”.

Messi, who signed for Miami in July after his contract with Paris St-Germain expired, watched his new club’s 2-1 defeat by Houston Dynamo in the final of the US Open Cup last week from the stands.

Inter Miami are 14th in the 15-team Eastern Conference and need to win all three of their next matches to have any chance of making the play-offs.

Lionel Messi seals move to Inter Miami

Lionel Messi has completed his move to Inter Miami on a deal running to 2025, the Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit announced on Saturday.

The 36-year-old Argentina superstar revealed in June he had decided to join the Florida side as his contract with Paris St.-Germain (PSG) came to an end.

With the deal now officially done, Messi is in line to make his debut for his new employers on Friday against Mexico’s Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner said in a statement from the club: “I’m very excited to start this next step in my career with Inter Miami and in the U.S.

“This is a fantastic opportunity and together we will continue to build this beautiful project.

“The idea is to work together to achieve the objectives we set, and I’m very eager to start helping here in my new home.”

Inter Miami are co-owned by former England captain David Beckham, who said: “Ten years ago, when I started my journey to build a new team in Miami, I said that I dreamt of bringing the greatest players in the world to this amazing city.

“Players who shared the ambition I had when I joined LA Galaxy to help grow football in the U.S. and to build a legacy for the next generation in this sport that we love so much.

“Today that dream came true. I couldn’t be prouder that a player of Leo’s calibre is joining our club, but I am also delighted to welcome a good friend, an amazing person and his beautiful family to join our Inter Miami community.

“The next phase of our adventure starts here, and I can’t wait to see Leo take to the pitch.”

MLS commissioner Don Garber said;

“We are overjoyed that the greatest player in the world chose Inter Miami CF and MLS, and his decision is a testament to the momentum and energy behind our League and our sport in North America.

“We have no doubt that Lionel will show the world that MLS can be a league of choice for the best players in the game.

“We look forward to seeing his debut for Inter Miami in our Leagues Cup tournament later this month.”

Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi arrives after a season in which he helped his country to World Cup glory in Qatar, as well as PSG to the Ligue 1 title.

This was in his first campaign with the French club side in 2021/2022.That adds to an already huge trophy haul on his CV which features four UEFA Champions League successes from his years with FC Barcelona.

He scored a staggering total of 672 goals for the Spanish club side.Joining Miami sees Messi who has also netted more than 100 international goals reunite with coach Gerardo Martino, who he previously worked under with Barca and Argentina.

Martino was appointed in June after the club sacked Beckham’s ex-Manchester United team-mate, Phil Neville.

PSG confirm Lionel Messi is leaving the club at the end of this week

French giants, Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed that Lionel Messi will leave the club at the end of this season, with the Argentine set to play his final game against Clermont Foot on Saturday, June 3.

PSG manager Christophe Galtier confirmed in a press conference on Thursday afternoon, June 1, that the World Cup winner will depart, with Inter Miami one of many potential destinations. ‘Clermont Foot will be Messi’s final game at PSG,’ said Galtier. ‘I had the privilege of coaching the best player in the history of football. It will be Leo’s last match at the Parc des Princes.’ Messi joined PSG in 2021 and has won two Ligue 1 titles.

The 35-year-old hinted that leaving Barcelona allowed him to mature as a player and some suggest that leaving his comfort zone allowed him to develop the leadership qualities he displayed in winning the Qatar World Cup in December.

French media reported this morning that Messi could make a sensational return to the Camp Nou but that Barcelona would struggle to financially wager a move.

One alternative suggested by L’Equipe, though, is that Messi could join Inter Miami and be loaned to the Catalan club. Inter Miami, managed by Phil Neville, are said to be offering Messi a lucrative package, while there is still interest from Asian clubs.‘I hope that he will be welcomed in the best way,’ added Galtier ahead of Messi’s final game.

PSG have already won the Ligue 1 title. There have also been suggestions that the World Cup winner could be on the verge of signing a lucrative deal with Saudi side Al-Hilal.

Rumours last month claimed that Messi had been offered a contract worth £522million from Al-Hilal, despite the concerns of his wife Antonela Roccuzzo. Messi’s father, Jorge, quickly shut down reports that a decision had been made about his son’s club for next season.

Taking to social media, Messi’s father said:

There is absolutely nothing with any club for next year. The decision will never be made before Lionel finished the league with PSG. Once the season is over it will be time to analyze and see what is there, and then make a decision.

There are always rumors and many use the name of Lionel to gain notoriety but the truth is only one and we can assure that there is nothing with anyone.

Neither verbal, nor signed, nor agreed, and there will not be until the end of the season.’

During his impressive campaign in France, Messi scored 16 goals and recorded 16 assists in the league.

Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal offer Lionel Messi €400m Per Year Deal

Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal, have proposed an offer worth in excess of €400 million per year to sign Paris Saint-Germain’s Argentina star, Lionel Messi.

According to Italian journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Al Hilal, which also has former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo on its ranks, are the latest club to join the race to sign Messi on a free transfer, with his contract at PSG set to expire in the summer.

According to reports, Messi’s priority is to continue his career in Europe, but despite having received an offer from the Ligue 1 champions he is yet to accept their new terms.

“Understand Al Hilal sent an official bid to Leo Messi: salary worth more than €400m/year,” Romano wrote on Twitter.

“Leo’s absolute priority: continue in Europe.”

He stated that Barcelona are waiting on the Financial Fair Play (FFP) case before sending a bid and opening talks to being back the legendary player.

Also, according to ESPN sources, Messi is looking unlikely to remain in Paris, with the 35-year-old not willing to take a salary reduction.

The report adds that he is prepared to wait to see what proposals come his way at the end of this season before making a decision.

Barcelona confirm talks to re-sign Lionel Messi from Paris Saint Germain

FC Barcelona vice president Rafa Yuste has confirmed that the club has contacted Lionel Messi about a possible return to the club this summer. The Argentine superstar famously left Barca in tears in 2021.

He then joined Paris Saint Germain as a free agent and signed a two-year contract which expires on June 30.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s deal at the Parc des Princes came with the option of an additional year that Messi has thus far been reluctant to take up.

Mundo Deportivo has reported on Friday that PSG are willing to offer Messi “more money and more years” than just the additional “plus one”.

On Thursday, French sports outlet L’Equipe reported that Messi currently takes home €3.375 million ($3.7 million) a month from the Ligue 1 giants, which puts him third behind teammates Neymar in second and leader Kylian Mbappe.

Speaking earlier today in Spain, Yustewhile holding a press conference, confirmed his club’s interest in re-signing Messi.

“Leo [Messi] and his family know the affection I have for them. I participated in the negotiations that unfortunately did not lead to a successful conclusion,” Yuste began, reminiscing about the Argentine’s exit.

“I have the thorn in my side that Leo could not continue in our club. If we are talking about La Masia and grassroots football, we are talking about Messi.

“Of course I would love for him to come back, for what it could represent at a sporting, social and economic level. We are in contact with them, yes,” Yuste confirmed.

Messi named FIFA’s best player

PSG and Argentina football icon Lionel Messi has been named the 2022 Best FIFA Men’s Player ahead of his club’s teammate Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid star Karim Benzema at an event held in Paris, France, on Monday night.

Messi played an essential role as Argentina national team won the FIFA World Cup in Qatar last year, scoring seven goals to help the South American nation win its first world title in almost four decades and his first World Cup title to crown his achievements in football.

It would be the second time the former Barcelona star would win the coveted honour after clinching the award in 2019, now tied with long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo with two FIFA Best Awards each.

Barcelona midfielder and Spain international Alexia Putellas was voted The Best FIFA Men’s Player ahead of Arsenal forward and England international Beth Mead and San Diego Wave and the United States Women’s National Team’s Alex Morgan.

She was an important player in the Barcelona Femení’s squad as they won the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Spain Women’s Primera División and the Supercopa de España Femenina last season.

Man United Women’s and England goalkeeper Mary Earps won the FIFA Best women’s goalkeeper thanks to her triumph with the Three Lionesses at the Women’s European Championship last year, while Argentina FIFA World Cup hero Emiliano Martinez won the men’s category.

Polish amputee footballer Marcin Oleksy won the Puskas Award for his overhead kick goal for Warta Poznań against Stal Rzeszów ahead of Richarlison, Dimitri Payet. He made history by becoming the first amputee to win the honour.

Three Lionesses head coach Sarina Weigman won the FIFA’s Best Women’s coach award after leading the England national team to their first-ever European title at the 2020 Women’s European championship; the Dutch have now won the prestigious honour for the third time in her managerial career.

Argentina national team manager Lionel Scaloni was voted the ‘The Best FIFA Men’s Coach’ for 2022 after guiding the La Albiceleste to their first World Cup title in 36 years at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar in which they defeated France in the final on penalties to clinch the most prestigious trophy in football.

Georgian footballer Luka Lochoshvili claimed the Fair Play Award – for saving the life of an opponent from swallowing his tongue, while the Best FIFA Award for 2022 went to the Argentina fans.

Argentina’s Central Bank ‘is plotting to put Lionel Messi’s face on a bank note’ to mark nation’s World Cup win in Qatar

Argentina’s Central Bank is reportedly considering a Lionel Messi banknote after the superstar guided Argentina to their first World Cup win since 1986 in Mexico.

According to newspaper El Financiero, the Central Bank of the Republic of Argentina are eager to mark the national team’s historic win in Qatar and have been working on ideas since before the epic 4-2 shootout win in the final over France.

Mock-ups of the 1,000 peso note being discussed has since gone viral – with fans eager to see it enter circulation.

It is detailed in EF that a key part of the reason behind the 1,000 bill is that it begins with a ’10’ – Messi’s shirt number for Argentina.

While Messi’s grinning face is on one side of the note, this group’s nickname ‘La Scaloneta’ is the wording proposed for the back.

In 1978, officials issued commemorative coins when Argentina won its first World Cup back in 1978.

Commemorative coins were also produced on the 50th anniversary of the death of Eva Perón, the former First Lady of Argentina. Under national coach, Lionel Scaloni’s reign, Argentina have gone on to win the 2021 Copa America, the first ever Finalissima at Wembley Stadium and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Lionel Messi’s house in Rosario swamped with hundreds of Argentina fans after two days of celebrating World cup triumph

Following the parade, Messi was flown back by helicopter from Buenos Aires to Rosario – some 185 miles away – before he was pictured in a car driven by his wife Antonella Roccuzzo, as they headed home.

Following the parade, Messi was flown back by helicopter from Buenos Aires to Rosario – some 185 miles away – before he was pictured in a car driven by his wife Antonella Roccuzzo, as they headed home.

Upon his arrival, Messi was greeted by hundreds of cheering fans chanting ‘Dale Campeon’ translating to ‘Let’s go champion’.

The jubilant fans had been pushed to two sides by security to clear space for his wife to drive the car through the middle and inside a building.

Messi was born in Rosario and also started his football career playing for Newell’s Old Boys based in the city.

Messi and his family relocated to Barcelona in 2001 when he was 13-years-old and it was at the Spanish club he made his name as one of the greatest players in the world.

Lionel Messi could play in the 2026 World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico – Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni says after their World Cup win

Argentina coach, Lionel Scaloni has dropped a hint that Lionel Messi could play in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Messi went into the 2022 competition in Qatar saying it will be his last World Cup, and he signed off in the best possible way by winning the one trophy in the most dramatic final in history.

‘First of all, we need to save him a spot for the World Cup 2026,’ Scaloni said of his star player. ‘If he wants to keep playing, he will be with us.

‘I think he is more than entitled to decide whether he wants to keep playing or what he wants to do with his career.’

In the final clash in Doha, Argentina triumphed 4-2 in a penalty shootout after Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick ensured the game ended level at 3-3 following extra time. Messi, 35, scored twice to win the first World Cup of his glittering career.

After the match, Messi vowed to continue playing international football despite realising his lifetime ambition, but he admitted his career was in its final stages.

“I want to keep experiencing a few more matches as world champion… my career is nearly over because these are my last years,” said Messi, whose next target will be to help his club side Paris Saint-Germain capture a first Champions League title.

Lionel Messi bypasses Cristiano Ronaldo in number of non-penalty goals scored

Lionel Messi has bypassed Cristiano Ronaldo in the rankings for the total number of goals scored without a penalty.

The 35-year-old superstar scored for Paris Saint-Germain during their 1-0 victory over Lyon on Sunday night, September 18. As a result, Messi has now scored 672 non-penalty goals during his professional career.

While Ronaldo has scored 671. Messi scored PSG’s only goal in their Ligue 1 clash with Lyon. He found the back of the net in the fifth minute of the game to see them win 1-0, taking his non-penalty goal tally to 672, trumping Manchester United forward Ronaldo by one despite playing 150 fewer games than the Portugal international.

Ronaldo still holds the bragging right for more appearances when it comes to international football.

The United forward has made 189 appearances for Portugal and has featured in four World Cups, five European Championships, one Nations League Finals and one Confederations Cup.

Meanwhile, Messi has made 162 appearances for Argentina – playing at four World Cups and six Copa America’s. However, he has only ever picked up one international trophy.

Ronaldo has also scored more goals in total. He has found the back of the net 699 times in 941 games in all competitions for four different clubs.

Ronaldo has also scored more than 50 goals a season for six consecutive seasons for Real Madrid between 2010-11 and 2015-16. For Messi, he has scored 688 goals in 822 competitive games across all competitions for two clubs – Barcelona and PSG.

Additionally, Messi has scored more than 30 goals a season for 13 consecutive seasons for Barcelona between 2008-09 and 2020-21.

Lionel Messi: Manchester City will not try to sign Barcelona forward, says Semra Hunter

Man City were understood to be the frontrunners to sign Lionel Messi last summer as he demanded to leave Barcelona during a bitter contract dispute, which culminated with the 33-year-old reluctantly staying put at the Nou Camp; His wages and age are said to be a concern for City

Manchester City have ended their pursuit of Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, according to Spanish football expert Semra Hunter.

City were understood to be the frontrunners to sign Messi last summer as he demanded to leave Barcelona during a bitter contract dispute, which culminated with the 33-year-old reluctantly staying put at the Nou Camp.

Messi is out of contract at the end of the season, making him free to negotiate with other clubs from January and appearing to make a reunion with former manager Pep Guardiola all the more likely.

However, the Premier League club are no longer keen to sign the six-time Ballon d’Or winner, says Hunter, with his age and €100m-a-year wages (£89m) thought to be a deal breaker for City.

“I have it on good authority from someone close to the situation that Manchester City are not going to bid for Lionel Messi,” Hunter told Sky Sports News. “Based on the information I have, as of today, that door is closed.

“They have their reasons for this. They have two reasons for this: age and finances. Talking about age, he is heading into the twilight years of his career and you’ll be bringing on board a Messi that is different to what we’ve seen for the last 17 years with Barcelona. Even he himself has said that he is getting closer to the dreaded r-word of retirement more so than anyone cares to admit.

“That goes hand-in-hand with finances because even though he would be able to join for free, his wages are astronomically high – he is earning about 100m euros-a-year. That would be a huge financial burden for any club to take on, especially given the fact that we are in the middle of a global pandemic.

“Economically, everyone has taken a hit and clubs are not immune from this either. We’ve seen in the transfer window over the past summer that clubs are changing their strategies. Some of them, like Real Madrid, didn’t even buy a single player, most of them are trying to sell, some of them are trying to bide their time and wait so they can make bigger transfers some time down the road. And 100m euros is a huge stress from a wage-bill point of view.

“Either you have to offload some of the highest earners or you have to sell off players or make other tweaks in other parts of the club depending on whatever formula a club would want to use to bring Messi on board.

“Perhaps, clubs would rather invest that money into bringing younger players in or bringing in reinforcements in positions where they actually need those reinforcements.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he wants to see Lionel Messi finish his career at Barcelona because of his own strong bond with the Spanish club.

“Leo Messi is a player for Barcelona and if you’re asking me for my opinion, I am a person who has a huge gratitude to Barcelona for what they did for me as a player, they gave me absolutely everything, from the start, from my time in the academy,” he said.

“So I want him to finish his career there. That is what I want. As a Barcelona fan, I would like for Leo to finish there.

“But this year he finishes his contract and after that, we don’t know what will happen and what is in his mind.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s achievements ‘more impressive’ than Lionel Messi’s – Iker Casillas

It’s the most heated debate in football: who is the greatest of all time, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? Now Iker Casillas has had his say, claiming that his former team-mate’s feats in football are superior to those of his one-time rival in La Liga.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s achievements in football are “more impressive” than those of Lionel Messi, according to his former team-mate Iker Casillas.

While Messi has won six Ballons d’Or to Ronaldo’s five, Casillas has weighed in in favour of the man he shared a dressing room with at the Bernabeu.

Ronaldo’s work ethic is legendary and Casillas believes that the fact Messi has more innate talent means Ronaldo has in fact had to work harder to achieve what he has in football.

“Cristiano always had huge desire to be the best, ever since he was a boy and I believe he has achieved that,” said Casillas, in quotes reported by As.

“If I have to compare him to Messi, what Cristiano has done is more impressive because we all know the talent Messi has, but Cristiano was determined and worked hard to be the best.

“I feel we have been lucky to have been able to enjoy two phenomenal players. For people that don’t know Cristiano, he can appear to be cocky and arrogant, but it’s totally the opposite.”

Lionel Messi Beats Cristiano Ronaldo In Top 50 Athletes List

Lionel Messi has been named No 1 in SportsPro’s 2020 list of the World’s 50 Most Marketable Athletes, with his rival Cristiano Ronaldo finishing in second spot.

The two lead the field globally, ahead of NBA star LeBron James and India cricket captain Virat Kohli, but it’s a shock to see the Barcelona player placed ahead of his rival at Juventus.

CR7 has often been listed as the world’s most marketable athlete and is the planet’s most followed person on Instagram (238 million compared to Messi’s 167 million).

But Messi is the reigning Ballon d’Or winner and SportsPro’s study allowed for factors such as “social following, content engagement, fanbase growth over time, media value, and the performance of branded versus organic content.”

There is an argument that because Ronaldo is seen to work with a greater number of sponsors and brands than Messi, the Argentine might be perceived as therefore more valuable to those he does choose to endorse.

SportsPro admitted it was “narrow” between the pair, who are undoubtedly the two most high-profile sportspeople on the planet. And there can be little argument with their putting the face of the NBA James in third, while Kohli – a sporting idol across India – is in fourth.

The top five is rounded out by the highest-placed female athlete: Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu, who won the US Open in 2019.

Football players dominate the list with three more in the top 10 alone: Brazil superstar Neymar (sixth), Liverpool’s Mo Salah (ninth) and Ronaldo’s teammate at Juventus, Paulo Dybala (10th).

In a surprise, the highest combat sports athlete is not Conor McGregor but his UFC rival Khabib Nurmagomedov, who takes seventh spot. Perhaps there is a feeling ‘The Notorious’ has damaged his standing with his outside the Octagon antics.

Anthony Joshua comes in at 31st, just ahead of his would-be heavyweight opponent Tyson Fury in 32nd (oddly, Mexican multi-weight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is absent altogether). However the highest British athlete overall is Lewis Hamilton, the Formula 1 ace who is in 21st place.

As usual, there’s a desire to show a variety of sports and to include some new names, which arguably skews the rankings (are there really 34 more marketable athletes on the planet than Roger Federer, who comes in at 35th?). But there’s plenty of interesting choices.
