Lagos club owners on Wednesday appealed to the state government to lift the ban placed on their business, a statement revealed.
Lagos Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a bid to check the Covid-19 pandemic had shut night clubs and bars.
A representative of club owners, Toyin Sonoiki, made the call at a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and culture in Lagos, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) is reporting.
Mr Sonoiki promised that once the ban is lifted, his colleagues would comply with all Covid-19 guidelines adding that most of the club owners still pay their staff despite being shut down.
“We promise to work with the government to identify clubs not complying with COVID-19 protocols”, he said.
Responding to the plea, Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, who empathised with the night club operators, said the state government understood the pains and financial losses.
“Because of the fear of another surge in the reported cases of COVID-19 the government is now more circumspect than before.
“The state government will not want its efforts and successes recorded in the stemming of the spread of COVID-19 to be thwarted,” Mrs Akinbile-Yussuf said.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Solomon Bonu, said some clubhouses are still open despite the directive not to.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, boasted on Tuesday the state will become a megacity by 2030 considering the ongoing transformation process in the state.
Sanwo-Olu stated this during the 2021 Lagos Economic Summit with the theme: “For a Greater Lagos: Setting the tone for the next decade.”
He said Lagos had seen several revolutionary changes to usher in a new era of prosperity reflected in improved infrastructure, economy, and security.
The governor said the state is still confronted with many challenges, stressing that is also important to identify the progress and build on it.
Sanwo-Olu said: “In 2030, Lagos will proudly stand beside every other megacity in the world in terms of its capacity to transport its people efficiently and responsively.
“In 2030, Lagos will be a Smart City, fully covered by a network of several thousands of kilometers of fibre optic infrastructure that will carry broadband internet into our homes, offices, and schools and unleash a technology revolution that has never before been seen in this part of the world.
The Smart City that is unfolding will also be home to a network of intelligent cameras that will support not only security and policing across the state, but also traffic management and data collection for urban planning.
“As you all know, land is not a resource we are generously endowed with in Lagos – we are the smallest state in Nigeria by landmass, with by far the largest population.
Yet, this should not be an excuse for us to shy away from exploiting the agriculture value chain to the fullest, with a focus on non-land-intensive aspects like processing and value addition.
“By 2030, Lagos will be home to one of the largest rice mills in the world in Imota. We can still aspire, even with our geographical limitations to feed ourselves and the rest of the country through the innovative use of technology and a focus on processing and industry.”
The governor stressed that his administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S agenda would help harness the full potential of Lagos and shapes the state into a competitive megacity in the new decade.
In his remarks, the Co-Chairman of Lagos Economic Summit Group, Yemi Cardoso, said Lagos had seen an appreciable development over the last 10 years.
He said: “Lagos is a megacity and must begin to look and operate like a megacity.
“That would only be possible if we are deliberate about the plans and policies we put in place to ensure that both the public and private sector can achieve the set goals or objectives meant to develop the city.
“I believe we have the leaders with the know-how and we have the workforce. What we need to do is provide the vision and guidance to make sure it happens. That is what this summit is about.”
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 14 suspected internet fraudsters in Lagos.
The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, who disclosed this in a statement sent to Ripples Nigeria, said the suspects were arrested following series of intelligence on their alleged fraudulent activities.
He added that they were arrested at 1004 Estate, Victoria Island, Lagos, on February 4.
The suspects are – Akin Abiola Daramola, Stephen Augustine Terungwa, Oluwateru Abiodun Samson, Jeffrey Imariagbe Ehis, Uwajiala Odion Henry, Solomon Abidiran Pelumi, Adebayo Oluwatobi Isaac Olamide and Odunifa Joseph Opomulero.
Others are – Adulkarim Samad Olalekan, Anne Davidson, Ibrahim Enakere Emmanuel, Abayomi Oluwagbenga Olowoake, Israel Jigah Sokoamtu, Oluwaseun Olajuwon Ibrahim and Isaiah Effiong
“They have been interrogated and will soon be arraigned in court,” the EFCC spokesman said.
It would be recalled that a young man jumped to his death from the seventh floor of the high-brow estate during EFCC’s raid on the premises on February 4.
The man, who was not a suspect, was confirmed dead at a hospital he was rushed to by residents of the estate.
The tuition fees for the Lagos State University (LASU) has been reduced, the state government announced on Friday afternoon.

A student of the University of Lagos, John Akinwale, has landed in the hospital after a power-drunk policeman tortured him to a coma in the Mosafejo, Oshodi area of Lagos State.
SaharaReporters learnt that Akinwale was arrested on Monday around 2 pm, after he bought fuel at a filling station, by police officers attached to the Mosafejo division.
It was gathered that the operatives extorted N5000 from the UNILAG student, who is also an activist, before dragging him to a police station.
According to a witness, Akinwale was arrested for having a “covered number plate.”
After the extortion, the policemen, not done, beat Akinwale to a coma, for being “rude” after which he was rushed to a hospital.
A source said, “John came out from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority office and drove into a filling station. The policemen rushed at him just as he was about to leave the station.
“They collected N5000 from him and they dragged him to a police station. He collapsed in police custody after being beaten up by the officer. He was arrested for covering his number plate. He was held for hours for being rude to the Divisional Police Officer of the Mosafejo division in Oshodi.
“It was when he became unconscious that he was rushed to a hospital. It is now that he is regaining consciousness that he confirmed that he was hit by objects by the policemen.”
“I saw him use medication for Typhoid earlier that morning. We first thought it was the medication that reacted in his body. But the doctor at the hospital confirmed that it was not the drugs but that he was hit with an object.
“When he regained consciousness, he stated the same thing that the policemen beat him up,” another source said.

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has endorsed Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State as the leader of the party in the South-West.
The Lagos State PDP stated this after a meeting with the governor on Saturday at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan.
The battle for who is the party’s leader in the zone had set Makinde and former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose and their supporters against each other in recent times, creating a rift in the party at that level.
Apparently, rejecting Fayose, the Lagos PDP delegation led by its Deputy Chairman, Alhaji Waliu Hassan, pledged members’ loyalty to Makinde as a force to reckon with in the South-West PDP.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, a former House of Representatives member, Rita Orji, called of Governor Makinde not to relent in his leadership roles while also promising that the Lagos State chapter of the PDP would ensure amicable resolution of conflicts within its fold.
Orji said: “The purpose of today’s meeting is to thank Governor Makinde for standing by the party and to pledge total loyalty to his leadership of the South-West. No more, no less.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Friday said Lagos may slip into a second wave of Coronavirus pandemic, if residents failed to comply with the precautionary measures against the spread of virus.
The governor disclosed that of every 100 tests that the state has performed, an average of 10 turn out to be positive, stating it is an increase from the five per hundred recorded in September, though lower than the peak in August, which was between 20 and 30 per hundred.
“This suggests the existence of active community transmission, and represents the very likely possibility of the emergence of a second wave in Lagos State.
“This second wave calls for a full re-awakening of caution and precaution. The complacency that crept in over the last few months as a result of our early interventions when cases started to decline from our peak in August, must now give way to an abundance of vigilance.”
As a measure against a possible second wave of COVID-19, Sanwo-Olu asked all public servants from GL 14 and below, except emergency workers and first responders, to work from home as from Monday, December 21st for the next 14 days – in the first instance.
He also said all schools must shut down with immediate effect, and until further notice, while concerts, carnivals and street parties are banned in Lagos State until further notice, just as night clubs have not been allowed to open yet, so all night clubs in Lagos must immediately shut down, until further notice.
Sanwo-Olu added that the midnight to 4am curfew imposed by the Federal Government remains while the protocol of ‘No Mask No Entry’ must be enforced by all public places: Offices, Businesses, Markets, Shops, and so on must be adhered to.
The governor further said all places of must ensure that no gathering exceeds two hours, and also that no gathering exceeds 50 per cent of the maximum capacity of the venue, with all event planners must obtain prior clearance from the Lagos State Safety Commission for all events, and ensure that any planned gatherings do not exceed 300 people.
He said where the capacity of a venue exceeds 300 and permission has been granted, the occupancy shall not be more than 50 per cent of such a venue.
“The Safety Commission has been directed to visit Event Centres and gauge compliance with the established guidelines, to stop the virus from spreading. If there is evidence of lack of compliance at any Event Centre, it will be shut down immediately.
“Security agents have been mandated to ensure full enforcement, without exception. No one will be deemed to be above the law.
Any and all breaches of these regulations and public health protocols will lead to immediate closure as well as attract heavy fines, and any other sanctions and penalties deemed fit, in line with the Lagos State Infectious Diseases Control Regulation 2020.
“Event Centre Owners/Planners/Vendors will be responsible for any breach of protocols by their Staff.
“We will continue to closely watch the profile of the unfolding situation, while also awaiting updates and pronouncements from the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19. We will also keep working with the Presidential Task Force to ensure that the gains of the recent past are not frittered away on the altar of festivities and sheer carelessness. The lives of all Lagosians, including our elders and other vulnerable citizens, matter.”
Sanwo-Olu implored residents to take responsibility for the welfare and safety of all while they enjoy the festive season with friends and families. “It is important that as a community we strictly abide by the above regulations in the context of a global pandemic, without prejudicing our efforts to keep the economy running and maintain our means of livelihood to a sufficient extent.
“Let us use this festive season to spend quality time in small but controlled gatherings with family and friends in the spirit of the season. This virus does not discriminate. We must take responsibility, and not treat this pandemic with levity.
The Lagos State Government has launched a special security team, named ‘Anti-Oneway and Other Traffic Offenders Squad’ to checkmate one-way driving and other traffic offences by motorists.
The squad was set up by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, at the instance of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, with the specific mandate to arrest and impound vehicles plying one-way, BRT lanes and also motorcyclists operating in restricted areas.
The squad is led by the Commander of policemen in Governor’s Monitoring Team (GMT), Shola Jejeloye, a Superintendent of Police (SP).
It will complement activities of the existing Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Enforcement Agency (Task Force) led by Yinka Egbeyemi, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).
In the maiden enforcement of the outfit on Monday, the GMT team combed Ikeja, Ojota and Maryland axes, arresting Okada riders who defied the State’s traffic restriction order.
The team also burst a residential area in Ikeja habouring Okada riders that are flouting the State’s Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, retrieving various motorcycles from the building.
Some of the offenders were arrested in the enforcement for prosecution.
Jejeloye vowed that the team would not be lenient on those flouting Lagos traffic regulations, warning motorists who may have the intention of driving on one-way lanes to desist from the act.
He said: “We have been mandated by the Commissioner of Police to stop acts of indiscipline by some motorists who are in the habit of flouting traffic regulations of Lagos State. We will discharge this duty without fear or favour, and our activities will be professionally exercised in line with the mandate of the team.
“I, therefore, urge motorists to obey the traffic laws and be patient when driving on the roads. We will not be lenient on motorists that are in the habit of committing traffic offences. Offenders arrested will be prosecuted and have their vehicles confiscated.”

Six persons on Saturday died in an accident, which involved a truck and a Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle in the Ogere area of Lagos-Ibadan highway.

The robbery gang that attacked a bullion van in Lagos a fortnight ago in Lagos, reportedly doled out parts of their loot during their escape.
A source who made the revelation to DAILY POST said the magnanimity of the criminals was not to clear a gridlock but “a show-off”.
The assailants had arrived via Langbasa in two speed boats at a jetty and boat park on the afternoon of November 12, 2020.
The jetty provides easy access to water transport and many residents of the area patronize it for fast movement.
In what seemed like an inside job, the robbers used an off-white Toyota Sienna to trail the van from a location after Addo junction. It is unclear if the car was waiting or snatched.
As the armoured Toyota Hilux sped inward Ajah, the gang, around 3:30pm rained bullets on it and eventually ambushed it near Blenco supermarket.
The source said: “There was the driver, one policeman and someone else, I guess a bank staff. The vehicle stopped because the tyres blew-up, all of them fled.
“The guys fired the lock open and carried the cash. I don’t know what happened to the three people but an Okada rider died from a stray bullet. I heard another person was killed.
“They continued shooting as they drove back to Langbasa. When they got there, they removed some bundles of money out of excitement and threw in the air for people.
“They left with the same two boats. We later got information that one was abandoned in the middle of the lagoon. The whole thing was like an action movie.”
The incident had occurred two weeks after the unprecedented civil disorder that trailed the End SARS protest.

Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Hakeem Odumosu, said the bullion van attack could be a case of conspiracy.
Odumosu, speaking at the command headquarters, wondered why the vehicle hit the road without adequate guards.
“Ajah incident is being investigated, we discovered that the bullion van was waylaid. They created that environment for it to happen. You don’t move a bullion van with money without an armed escort in the front and behind. There was no single escort.
“There was no physical reaction to that action which shows that it is a premeditated one. Notwithstanding, action has been taken because the law of the land was violated. Investigations have commenced and at the end of the day the facts will be made”, the CP said.
Over 30 persons, who lost loved ones, got injured or lost properties in the gas explosion that happened in the Baruwa area of Lagos on October 8, have written a pre-action letter to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, demanding N4bn as compensation for their losses.
The victims made the demand in an October 19, 2020 letter written to the governor by their lawyer, Akeem Fadun.
Fadun, who said the incident was blamable on government’s failure to act when the residents raised an alarm back in February 2018, said his clients should be compensated so they could get their lives back on track.
“Our clients have suffered varying degrees of damage, including death of family and kin, maiming and burning of loved ones, complete destruction of properties, such as shops, schools and homes.
“As it stands, many of the victims sleep in makeshift sheds amid the ruins left behind by the inferno, and others roam hopelessly, having lost their means of livelihood to the inferno.
“One of our clients lost his wife and three children at a go; another lost his brother and son; another, his brother and benefactor. Others have spouses with third-degree burns that will require further surgery, if they survive, to try to lessen the scarring and contracture; the list goes on. Some of the victims have had to assign permanent guards to other victims who have displayed symptoms of severe depression, anxiety attacks and even made suicidal utterances,” Fadun said.
The lawyer, while describing the explosion as man-made and a clear case of government systemic failure to delivery on its statutory function to protect citizens’ lives and property, recalled how upon writing a save-our-soul letter to the government back in 2018 calling for the removal of Best Roof Gas Station from the neighbourhood, the response of the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development was to demand payment of N689,500 from the residents for the likely removal of the gas station.

The electric car, named ‘Hyundai Kona’, was assembled by Stallions Automobile factory.
In his remarks at the launch, Sanwo-Olu said the state government will provide charging points for electric cars, and continue to partner with stakeholders who are ready to bring in innovative ideas that will make Lagos stand out and further create an enabling environment where business can thrive.
A locally assembled electric car was launched in Lagos on November 13, 2020. The Managing Director of Stallions Group, Rohtagi Manish, said the innovation is a step towards keying into an eco-friendly green Lagos, as the material used to assemble Nigeria’s First one hundred percent Electric zero-emission car was mostly sourced locally.

Nigeria Police Force operatives on Saturday arrested Eromosele Peter Adene, one of the promoters of EndSARS protests.
It was gathered that the Edo State-born graduate of Computer Engineering was arrested at his residence in Lagos and taken to the Commissioner of Police’s office where he was forced to write a statement.
Recall that the Lagos State Police Command had vowed to resist any form of protest in the state.
Although the right to peaceful gathering and association is enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Lagos Police spokesperson, in a statement on Friday said it will not allow any form of gathering, procession or assembly to hold in the state.

A tank farm belonging to Oando Plc located at Marine Beach, Ijora, Lagos State was on Thursday gutted by fire.
Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, the Acting Zonal Coordinator, southwest Zonal Office, (NEMA) confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Farinloye said the cause of the fire which started at the depot about 12.05 p.m. was yet to be ascertained.
He said all employees working in the facility had been safely evacuated.
According to him, officials of the Federal Fire Service, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Fire Service, and the Lagos State Fire Service are presently trying to extinguish the inferno.
At least there trucks were at the early hours of Thursday burnt after a Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) laden tanker exploded around Mile Two along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.
The incident was said to have occurred around 1am while the exploded tanker was trying to navigate a bad portion of the road.
It was gathered that the tanker went up in flames as soon as it overturned while its contained spilled all over the expressway.
Following the trail of spilled PMS, the fire in no time gutted a truck loaded with beverages from LACASERA as well as another petroleum tanker on the side.
Confirming the incident, Director General (DG) LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu said no life was lost.
He said: “There was no loss of life. We received the distress call concerning the explosion around 1am and activated emergency response plan.
“On arrival, it was discovered that a fuel tanker loaded with PMS had overturned and burst into flames due to the oil spillage. This in turn affected some stationary trailers parked inwards Apapa.
“A combined team comprising Lagos Fire, Police, Federal Fire and LASEMA responders have extinguished the flames.
“Operation to remove the affected vehicles is ongoing while road users are encouraged to use alternative routes.”
Hakeem Fahm, the Lagos State Commissioner for Science and Technology, has debunked the news that the state government’s website had been hacked.
Fahm said in a statement on Saturday that the information was wrong and should be disregarded by the public.
“The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to a publication by the Guardian Newspapers on Thursday, 22nd of October 2020, claiming that the Lagos State Government website was hacked.
“I wish to come out to clear the air on the issue. This information is not true. Our website was never hacked.
“Members of the public should always verify issues and get facts and figures right before dissemination.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I hereby confirm that the Lagos State website is up and running perfectly,” he said.
The commissioner said that over the past few days, the flow of misinformation on social media and other channels had been alarming, and this has put the security of residents at immense risk.
Fahm also assured Lagosians that the state government remains steadfast in its commitment to the safety of lives and property of its citizens and that of the state.
