A Nigerian man identified as Wesley Anthony Ogheneruona Ojih, from Ebor- Orogun, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, has narrated how his two sons died in a motor accident same day. The teenagers, Favour Ogheneruona, 16, and Precious Ogheneruona,14, were laid to rest in their hometown after a funeral service at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Agbor on Thursday, July 21, 2022.

The brothers were said to be on the same motorcycle when they had a fatal collision with a tipper lorry on the Owa-Okei Road, Owa which led to their death on May 24, 2022.

In an interview published by Ika Weekly Newspaper on Tuesday, August 2, Ogheneruona Ojih revealed that his first son was looking forward to studying Engineering, while the second hoped to become a medical doctor before the age of 22. “I had a total of five sons until I lost my first two sons, Precious and Favour Ogheneruona, to death; who had concluded their May/June WAEC examination and just started the NECO examination,” he said.

They have only written Marketing and Physics Practical before the ugly incident that occurred on the 24th, of May 2022.

On that fateful day, they had no examination to write, so they decided to join their mother, my wife, and me on the farm at Otolokpo and by 1 pm, to go back to Agbor for their NECO thumbprinting. It was on their way back, between Owa Ekei and Owa Alero, that a big truck (tipper) crushed them to death. “Their death was a huge loss to us, as my first son was already anticipating studying Engineering, while the second one to become a medical doctor, before the age of twenty-two.

We loved our children so much; they were very obedient and are committed to our well-being of the family, even at their young age. They were working for us because they were envisaging that as they are working for us, we the parents will in turn would use those resources to send them to the University He further added, “The Bible said we should give God thanks in every situation of life, actually, it is better they died that way than becoming a nuisance to society and source of burden to us because the impact of the accident on them was tremendous.”

Kaduna govt confirms killing of Senator Na’Allah’s son

The Kaduna State government on Sunday night confirmed the killing of Capt. Abdulkarim Ibn Na’Allah, the son of the Senator representing Kebbi South Senatorial District, Bala Na’Allah.

The deceased, a trained pilot, was killed by suspected bandits at his Malali residence in the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Kaduna North local government area of the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, confirmed the incident in a statement in Kaduna.

He said: “In what appears to be a case of culpable homicide, the deceased was found in a bedroom of his residence Malali, Kaduna North LGA, apparently after having been strangled with a rope.

A vehicle was stolen from his parking lot by the assailants.

In another incident, armed bandits killed one Ahmadu Tanko at Janwuriya, Kajuru LGA.

“Governor Nasir El-Rufai expressed deep sadness at the reports and prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims, and sent his heartfelt condolences to their families.

“The governor urged security agencies to conduct vigorous investigations towards apprehending the perpetrators of the attacks.

“Security agencies are investigating the incidents.”

Navy dismisses report on killing of personnel in Anambra

The Nigerian Navy on Tuesday described as false reports that two of its personnel were killed by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Some online platforms had reported that two Naval officers were killed by IPOB members in a gun duel at Awkuzu area of Anambra on Monday night.

But the Commanding Officer of the Naval Outpost, Onitsha, Adekunle Okeniyi, who reacted to the report in a statement, said six suspected IPOB members were killed in the operation.

The statement read: “The attention of the Naval Outpost, Onitsha, has been drawn to some false publications that on the 9th August 2001, two naval personnel were killed at Awkuzu during a gun duel with suspected Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) members in Anambra State.

The Naval Outpost, Onitsha, clearly refutes this fake news and wishes to state categorically that none of own personnel suffered any casualty during the gun duel.

“Rather, the troops fought gallantly and were able to repel the attack which resulted in the loss of six suspected IPOB members while others suffered serious injuries.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Naval Outpost, Onitsha, calls for an immediate halt to the circulation of this fake news and wishes to advise the general public to disregard this fake news.”

Police arrest 13-year-old boy for killing bandits in Katsina

The Katsina police command have arrested a 13-year-old boy for killing two men suspected to be bandits in the state.

The police said the suspect, Abdulkarim Mati, was once an errand boy to a bandits’ leader, Ardo Nashaware, who resides in Birnin Magaji forest, Zamfara State.

According to reports, he fled the forest where he allegedly committed the act.

Spokesman for the Katsina police command, Gambo Isah, who confirmed the incident on Saturday, said officers recently arrested Mati from where he ran to after his escape from the forest.

Isah said the suspect confessed that he was taken away from his parents under the guise that he would assist in rearing cows for his masters, adding that instead, he was taught how to operate AK-47 rifles and serve as a guard for kidnap victims.

“The boy, who demonstrated skills in handling AK-47, also confessed to have been bullied by some elderly bandits, who provoked him, and as a result, picked an AK-47 rifle and shot dead two of the elderly bandits,” the Police spokesman said.

Police confirm killing of Sen. Suswam’s elder brother

The Police Command in Benue has confirmed the killing of Dr Terkula Suswam, an elder brother of the immediate past governor of Benue, Sen. Gabriel Suswam.

The deceased who was a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was shot alongside his aide, in Anyiin, Gaambetiev, Logo local Government area in Benue state on Tuesday evening.

A statement signed by the state command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DCP Catherine Anene, on Wednesday in Makurdi confirmed the incident.

”At about 1930hrs information was received that while Dr Terkura Suswam and his aide, Mr Solomon, sat opposite his house at Elohim Plaza, Anyiin,to supervise repairs at the said plaza, yet-to-be identified gunmen, who drove in a Toyota Camry vehicle, attacked and shot him and his aide.

A team of police officers on patrol in the area rushed to the scene and conveyed the victims to NKST Anyiin Hospital where they were eventually confirmed dead.

“Their corpses have been deposited at the hospital for autopsy.

“While commiserating with family members and friends of the deceased, the Commissioner of Police has ordered a discreet investigation to ensure that the perpetrators of this gruesome murder are apprehended and justice is served.

“Anyiin town has been cordoned off by additional police teams deployed to assist the Division to nip this crime in the bud, ” the statement said.

29 year-old Ex-student and Farmer to die by hanging for killing Herdsman who tried to Kill him

A 29 year-old farmer, Sunday Jackson of Dong community in Demsa Local Government Area, Adamawa state has been convicted and sentenced to death by hanging for killing a herdsman.

Sunday Jackson who was tried by Honourable Justice Fatima Ahmed Tafida led High Court for culpable homicide punishable with death contrary to section 221 of the penal code law, was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging.

The convict was found guilty of causing the death of the herdsman, Buba Ardo Bawuro by stabbing him with a knife on the neck in a bush in Kodomti community, Numan LGA.

In his extra judicial confessional statement admitted in evidence, Sunday Jackson narrated that while he was working in his farm in a bush in Kodomti, the deceased came and put his cattle in his farm, but when he asked the Fulani herdsman why did he do so, the herdsman did not say anything.

According to him, he pursued the animals out of his farm, but the Fulani herdsman brought out his knife and advanced towards him with the knife and that on his part, he had nothing in his hand to defend himself.

Sunday Jackson said that he started running and screaming but no one came to his rescue, saying that as he was running, the herdsman trailed him and stabbed him with the knife at the back of his head.

He added that he then turned back to hit the deceased with his left leg, but he was not lucky as the deceased used the knife and stabbed him on the left leg.

At that point, according to him, he got scared when he discovered that the Fulani herdsman was trying to stab him again, saying that he held the hand of the deceased, and that as they were struggling, he collected the knife, stabbed him 3 times on his neck and threw away the knife.

But when he was arraigned before the court earlier, the defendant and now the convict pleaded not guilty to the offence, and in an effort to establish its case against him, the prosecution called 2 witnesses.

Arguing his case earlier, the defence counsel, F. A. Ogbe, told the court that the action of his client was in self defense, and prayed the court to discharge and acquit the farmer and former student G.D.S.S Zangun in Numan LGA.

On his part, counsel to the prosecution, N. J. Atiku, urged the court to convict the defendant solely on his confessional statement, and based on the fact that the death of human being had actually occurred.

In its verdict on Wednesday, the court presided by Justice Fatima Ahmed Tafida, said that the defendant had confessed to be the one that actually killed the herdsman, and that his confessional statement alone is enough to warrant his conviction.

Justice Fatima held that the defendant having disarmed the deceased, had the opportunity to escape for his life but failed to so do, saying that having considered the evidence (exhibits) tendered and the fact that they were not discredited, the prosecution has proved its case against the defendant and sentenced him to death by hanging.

Rights group accuses Cameroon soldiers of killing nine civilians

The Army in Cameroon has been accused of killing no fewer than nine civilians in the restive South West region of the country.

This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Human Rights Watch (HRW) which said that witnesses told them that the soldiers entered Mautu village on foot at around 14:00 on 10 January and then began shooting at people as they ran away in fear.

“The soldiers left the village at about 16:30 with at least four vehicles, which had arrived with additional soldiers after the attack began, HRW said in the statement.

The statement which also revealed that a child was among those killed added that the soldiers also looted scores of homes and threatened residents.

However, the report was denied by Cameroon’s defence ministry which said that they had carried out a “preventative raid on the positions of terrorist groups”.

Two Killed, others missing as students protest in Taraba

Two persons including a student of Abeda Holy Ghost Secondary School Peva have been confirmed killed by Special Forces while two others were declared missing during a protest by the students of the school in Takum local government area of Taraba state

DAILY POST gathered that students of the Holy Ghost Secondary School on Wednesday engaged in a peaceful protest against arrest and detention of their principal one Mr. Mathew who was accused of impregnating a student of the school.

It was learnt that the father of the impregnated student was said to have reported the principal to the office the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps NSCDC in Peva where he was arrested and detained.

A source who spoke to our reporter said the students after waiting in vain for their principal’s return for two days decided to mobilize themselves to the station where their principal was detained.

“While the students were going to the station where their principal was detained, we saw them in large numbers, you know the nature of students, whatever happened there between them and the officers we do not know but we discovered that there were heavy gunshots and teargas”

“The office of the NSCDC is close to a river, some of the students ran from the gunshots and fell into the water when they went back to the school, the school authority declared that three of the students were not back to the school from the protest”

“The next day which was Thursday, one of the students (a girl) was found dead in her uniform in the river, a situation that prompted another protest by the students, this time on Thursday, the protest was hijacked by some youths who were not happy with the death of the schoolgirl”

“The NSCDC seeing that there would be a crisis, they quickly called the Special Tax force that is deployed within the area to forestall crime and kidnaping, the Special Tax force arrived in Peva, they opened fire on the protesters, that was when a stray bullet hit a roadside mechanic and he died instantly”

“The two other students who were declared missing by the school authority have not been seen up to this time am speaking with you” the source disclosed on phone.

But, when contacted, Mr. Godwin Peter, the spokesman of the NSCDC Taraba State command told our correspondent on phone that he has not gotten details of the incident to confirm it to journalists.

Though, the police public relations officer Taraba State Command DSP. David Misar did not pick his phone to confirm the report, both the PPRO and the Commissioner of Police were in the area to ascertain the incident and calm the situation.

It was also reliably gathered that the police commissioner had engaged the locals and other security agencies in a round table discussion to calm the situation.
