20-year-old suspected kidnapper arrested with N8.4m cash and weapons in Bauchi

Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Abubakar Isah for criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, kidnapping, illegal possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Mamman Sanda made the disclosure while briefing newsmen at the Command headquarters on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.

The CP said N8.4million cash, weapons, motorcycles and other exhibits were recovered from the suspect.

“On 16/09/2022 at about 1730hrs the Command arrested the 20 years old Abubakar Isah at Tashan Daudu, Soro via Ganjuwa LGA at Gobirawa,” the Commissioner stated.

“The following exhibits were recovered in his possession; Eight million four hundred- and sixty-six-thousand-naira (N8.466,000.00) cash, one SMG rifle with ninety-two live ammunition, One empty magazine SMG OFN rifle, One 7.62mm calibre of live ammunitions, Eight different models of phones, one MP3, one Honda Motorcycle, one Cutlass.” he added.

While answering questions from journalists, the suspect insisted that he is innocent of the crimes though he agreed that all the exhibits were found in his possession at the point of arrest.

According to him, he is a cattle rearer and was contracted by one Ibrahim who is now at large to go to another village to rear some cattle for him for a period of time after which he will be paid the agreed sum.

“On the day I was arrested, I was on the back seat of the motorcycle which was driven by my boss going to the village where I will tend the cattle for him, he did not tell me the name of the village, he only asked me to go with him,” he said.

“He gave me a bag to hold while he drove the motorcycle. When we got to the bank of a river where we were to board a canoe to cross to the other side, we just saw Policemen with guns pointed at us.

My boss jumped off the motorcycle and ran away. I was then arrested and brought here,”Probed further, he insisted that he was innocent and he did not know what was contained in the bag until it was opened at the Police Command headquarters saying that, “I only held the bag without knowing its contents, that is the reason I am here,” the suspect added.

The Police Commissioner said that all efforts to get him to talk so that his boss and others can be traced and arrested proved abortive as the telephone number he gave has since been switched off.

The CP said from the look of things, the suspect belongs to a gang of kidnappers because there is no way someone of his age will have such an amount of money and the sophisticated weapons found with him.

“Nobody has come out to identify him since he was arrested and all that is left for the Police to do is to arraign him before the court with the exhibits, it is left for the court to decide.”

Meanwhile, the Command also exited mopped-up arms recovered including One Fabricated AK-47 riffle with empty magazine; Two Dane-gun; One Pump action JOJEFF Magnum; One single barrel gun and One revolver (fabricated).

“From the foregoing, it is obvious that the Bauchi State Police Command has not been resting on its oars in the areas of crime bursting towards ensuring adequate peace and security in the State”, the Commissioner added.

“We shall not relent and we shall continue to deliver on our mandate to protect lives and properties of the people of Bauchi State by ensuring a peaceful and conducive atmosphere to enable the good people of Bauchi State to go about their normal and lawful businesses and to keep them abreast on the progress of the Command regularly.

Ogun police arrests alleged kidnapper of Ibadan farm owner, Agboola

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested one Usman Hassan, a principal suspect among kidnappers who abducted and killed an Ibadan farm owner, Oluwole Agboola.

Disclosing the arrest of the kidnap suspect, the police spokesman in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said in a statement on Monday that Hassan had started recruiting other Fulani men to form another kidnap gang in the state.

According to him, Hassan is the brother of Usman Tahiru, a staff member of the late Agboola, who confessed that he collected N50,000 as his share of the ransom paid by the family of the late farm owner.

Hassan, whose accomplices had been arrested in Oyo State after the kidnap of Agboola at Solalu Village, before he was later killed, had run to Ogun State to hide after he knew that the police was after him.

Oyeyemi said, “He (Hassan) ran out of luck when detectives of Ogun State Police Command got information about his activity from the Fulanis he had tried to recruit into his kidnap team.

“His hideout in Imala area was stormed by the detectives and he was promptly arrested.”

According to the PPRO, when interrogated, Hassan opened up on how he conspired with his biological brother, Tahiru Usman, and others, to kidnap their victim in the Akinyele area of Ibadan, confessing that Agboola was killed after the gang had collected the ransom because their victim knew and could identify them.

Oyeyemi noted that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, had directed that the suspect be transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, from where he would be transferred to Oyo State Police Command for further interrogation and subsequent prosecution.

However, according to Tribune Online, Hassan when interviewed said he was not privy to the kidnap of his brother’s late boss, but was only asked by his brother, Tahiru, to bring three Fulani men to a junction close to the farm on the day of the kidnap.

Hassan said he left immediately and only saw Tahiru some days later, adding that his brother could not give a good account of his boss’s whereabouts when asked.

However, he said that when he questioned his brother after hearing about his boss’s death, Tahiru told him that Agboola was killed after his family paid a ransom because he could recognise his kidnappers.

Meanwhile, Hassan said that contrary to his brother’s claim that he gave him N50,000 on the third day after the kidnap, it was his brother who later gave him N20,000 to repair his motorcycle.

He swore with the Qur’an that he did not know that it was part of kidnap money, saying that his brother was just trying to put him into trouble by mentioning his name as one of the kidnap planners.

Hassan said he had to flee Ibadan for Ogun State when he heard about all the things his brother said, and how the police had mounted a search for him.

Fear of possible attack stops Evans journey to court.

For fear of possible attack amid the raging #EndSARS protest, the Nigerian Correctional Service on Wednesday did not take alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans, and his co-defendants, before the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja, where their trial was scheduled to continue before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo.Evans and his alleged accomplices are facing two separate charges of kidnapping and murder before Justice Taiwo.

The two charges were listed as number 10 and 12 in the court’s cause list for Wednesday but neither the prosecution nor the defence came to court.

On enquiry from the court registrar, the two cases would not go on as the prisons had communicated to the court that they would not bring the defendants to court, citing the unrest in the city occasioned by the widespread #EndSARS protest.

“They are afraid of hijack by protesters,” the court register noted.

The NCS Green Marias were nowhere to be found and the holding cells for keeping inmates on the court premises were empty.

Officials at the holding cells said the NCS had not brought inmates to court since Monday.

Attempt to get the NCS spokesman in Lagos, Rotimi Oladokun, to react failed as his mobile phone number was unavailable.

In one of the two charges before Justice Taiwo, the Lagos DPP accused Evans and three others of killing two persons, in their failed attempt to kidnap the Chairman of Young Shall Grow Motors, Obianodo Vincent on August 27, 2013.
