India signs $100bn free trade deal with four European nations

India has signed a free trade agreement (FTA) with a group of four European countries that are not members of the European Union.

The deal with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) will see investments in India of $100bn (£77.8bn), the country’s trade minister says.

The EFTA is made up of Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

The announcement comes as the UK and India have been holding negotiations over an FTA for the last two years.

“This landmark pact underlines our commitment to boosting economic progress and creating opportunities for our youth,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement.

“The times ahead will bring more prosperity and mutual growth as we strengthen our bonds with EFTA nations,” he added.

The agreement comes after almost 16 years of negotiations. Under this deal, India will lift most import tariffs on industrial goods from the four countries in return for investments over 15 years.

The investments are expected to be made across a range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, machinery and manufacturing.

“The agreement enhances market access and simplifies customs procedures making it easier for Indian and EFTA businesses to expand their operations in the respective markets,” the EFTA said in a statement.

India and the four EFTA nations now need to ratify the agreement before it can take effect, with Switzerland planning to do so by next year.

India is due to hold general elections this year as Mr Modi seeks a record third term in office.

In the last two years, India has signed trade deals with Australia and the United Arab Emirates.

Last week, the UK’s trade minister Kemi Badenoch suggested that it was possible that Britain could sign a free trade deal before India held its elections but said it would be “challenging” .

“I suspect that that is not necessarily going to be the case because I don’t want to use any election as a deadline,” she added.

India restricts import of computers, laptops and others

The Indian government on Thursday placed restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets, personal computers and servers with immediate effect.

The order issued by the federal ministry of commerce and industry said the imports would be allowed against a valid licence for restricted imports.

The restriction will not apply to passengers carrying the mentioned devices in their baggage.

As per the notification, up to 20 of these items per consignment are also eligible for an import licence exemption for the purpose of research and development, testing, evaluation, repair and re-export.

Although the government has not elaborated on its rationale behind the move, industry experts say the step is likely to help boost local manufacturing.

Nigerian arrested with 169 grammes of cocaine, ecstasy pills in India

A 28-year-old Nigerian identified as James Morrison, has been arrested by the Excise Enforcement officials in Hyderabad, India, for allegedly dealing on drugs.

According to officials of the Excise Enforcement, Morrison was arrested on Tuesday following a tip-off and a search on him revealed 153 grammes of cocaine and 16 grammes of MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine), a party drug commonly known as ‘Molly’ or ‘Ecstasy,’ from the suspect during a raid on a house at MS Makhtha area of Khairatabad.

One of the world’s most influential spiritual leaders has received the first dose of coronavirus vaccine

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has received his first dose of the coronavirus vaccine while urging others eligible to “take this injection”.

“This is very very helpful, very good,” he said as he was given the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab at a facility in the Indian city of Dharamsala on Saturday.

The Dalai Lama had enrolled himself to be vaccinated, officials said.

India launched its vaccination drive on 16 January, but it was limited to healthcare workers and frontline staff.

Since 1 March, however, the scheme has been extended to people aged over 60 and those between the ages of 45 and 59 with underlying illnesses.

Receiving his first shot in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, the Dalai Lama said people needed to be vaccinated to “prevent some serious problems”.

The chief medical officer of Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, Dr Gurdarshan Gupta, said the Dalai Lama had offered to visit the vaccination centre “like a common man”, Reuters news agency reported.

“We arranged the session in the morning, considering the security concern,” he added.

Speaking to the BBC last year, the Dalai Lama said the pandemic had promoted a “sense of concern, a more compassionate feeling”.

The Indian government aims to cover 300 million “priority people” with its vaccination drive by the end of July.

The country’s drugs regulator has given the green light to two vaccines – one developed by AstraZeneca with Oxford University (Covishield) and one by Indian firm Bharat Biotech (Covaxin).

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 70, was among the first to get his vaccine shot.

Since the pandemic began, India has confirmed more than 11 million cases and over 157,000 deaths.

Much of India has reported a sharp fall in cases recently – with daily infections for the county falling to less than 20,000 from a peak of over 90,000 in September.

But a handful of states have recently reported a sharp increase in the number of cases.
