Seme border closure a disservice to Nigerians – Gani Adams

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, said on Wednesday the continued closure of the Seme border was a disservice to Nigerians living in the South-West part of the country.

Adams, who stated this at the 2021 edition of the Olokun Festival held at Suntan Beach Badagry, decried the loss of huge revenue accrued to the government due to the border closure.

He said the reason given by the Federal Government for closing the border was not true.

The government had in August 2019 claimed that the Nigerian land borders were closed in a bid to check smuggling and proliferation of dangerous weapons in the country.

Adams, therefore, called on the Federal Government to reopen the border.

He said: “The issue of the border closure is a thing of worry. Seme border was shut in August 2019 to curb the smuggling of goods and weapons. However, it is sad that the border still remained closed. Closing the border for close to three years in a nation like Nigeria is not good for our economy.

“Without war, Seme border closure is a disservice to the South-West. The implication of this prolonged closure on the nation’s economy is huge. Therefore, I urge the Federal Government to urgently open the Seme border considering its importance to Nigeria and Nigerians.”

Gani Adams berates DSS for failing to present Igboho’s aides in Court

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Gani Adams has slammed the Department of State Services (DSS) for its refusal to ensure the appearance of the 12 aides of Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday.

Ripples Nigeria had reported that the agitators were arrested on July 1, during the raid of his Soka residence in Ibadan.

However, the DSS on Thursday said it had only three of the aides in custody as against the initial 12 reported in the media.

In his reaction via a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi, on Friday Adams noted that the conduct of the DSS was a gross violation of human rights.

He also wondered why it has taken the DSS so much time to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ugly incident where two of Igboho’s aides were allegedly killed.

“Our constitution is clear about the rights of every citizen that anybody arrested must be taken to court latest 24 hours after his arrest and such rights must be protected under the law.

“It is sad and most unfortunate that the DSS had arrogated to itself covert power that usually reminds us the inglorious years of the military where citizens’ rights have no basis in their law.

“Therefore, the DSS failure to present Igboho’s aides in court for the second time was a flagrant display of lawlessness and gross injustice. Ideally, it is only the President and the Vice President of the country that have that immunity as provided by our constitution.

“So why is the DSS finding it too difficult to allow the constitution to take its course as it is done in other climes,” he stated.

Gani Adams reiterates call for formation of Yoruba nation

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has thrown his support behind Yoruba activists calling for secession and establishment of Oduduwa Republic.

Adams made this call in an interview granted to BBC Yoruba on Thursday, April 1.

According to him, the Oduduwa Republic is not negotiable because he also wants its creation.

“Whatever they want is what I also want. But we are supposed to ask where our kings, leaders and politicians are going because I also want the Oduduwa nation,” Gani Adams said.

Gani Adams also addressed the security threats bedevilling the South-West region, describing such as unfortunate.

“It is the fault of security chiefs who have failed in their responsibilities to protect citizens, that is why people are agitating for the creation of Oduduwa nation but if the security forces join hands together with the citizens, we will be assured of strong security.”

He said although insecurity problems affect all the states in the country, it has been worse in some regions in the past six months.

Gani Adams said he has started working together with different groups and there are plans to protect the people of the South-West region against kidnappers and bandits.

According to him, the meeting has started yielding good results.

“We have written letters to all the Obas in Yorubaland, and I signed the letters alongside members of the Oodua Peoples Congress and security guards to report any issue of insecurity,” he said.
