Lagos, Ekiti men bag life imprisonment for raping minors

Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Lagos State Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on Wednesday sentenced a man, Ayokunle Bailey, to life imprisonment for defiling a 15-year-old girl.

According to the state prosecution team, Olusola Soneye and Olufunke Adegoke, the convict committed the offence on December 18, 2017, in an uncompleted building around the Alaka area of Mushin, Lagos State.

The defendant was charged with sexual defilement, an offence which contravenes Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

According to the prosecution team, the victim visited her grandmother on the fateful day.

While playing with other children outside the house, the convict lured her into an uncompleted building and forcefully had sex with her.

The prosecution said the convict was later arrested after the survivor walked home with blood dripping from her private parts and the defendant was identified by the survivor, who informed her aunt about the incident.

Justice Soladoye said the prosecution proved the charge of defilement against the convict.

She explained that the convict was crude and unkind, adding that he messed up the survivor’s purity and innocence.

She said, “The defendant is rough and selfish and the survivor gave her testimony truthfully, cogently, positively and brilliantly. She was brave.

“The story of the defendant is dishonest and full of lies. He is a reckless and ruthless person.

“The defendant, having been found guilty as charged is sentenced to life imprisonment without the option of fine.”

In a related development, an Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti division, has sentenced a 50-year-old man, Usman Tajudeen, to life imprisonment for raping a four-year-old girl.

The defendant was tried before the court on one count of rape and found guilty.

The charge read, “That you, Usman Tajudeen, on August 21, 2020, at Ikere Ekiti, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did rape a four-year-old girl.”

The prosecutor, K.S. Adeyemo, said the offence was contrary to Section 31(2) of the Child’s Right Law, Cap.C7 Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

In her statement to the police, the victim said, “Daddy Latifat (the defendant), who is living at our house, took me to his sitting room. He said I should sit on his lap; he removed my pants and put his something (penis) where I urinate. He used to call me to his sitting room to do it.”

Also, in her testimony before the court, the victim’s mother said, “I was where I was making cassava flour and my daughter went to excrete. When I went to pack the faeces, I noticed blood in the faeces.

“Thereafter, I checked her anus and saw blood coming out of her private parts. I was afraid. When I inquired from her, she said it was Daddy Latifat that put his organ (penis) in her private parts.”

The convict, who spoke in his defence through his counsel, Tope Salam, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.

In the court judgment, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye said, “The prosecutor has established before the court that the defendant had sexual intercourse with the minor without her consent and therefore committed the offence of rape as charged.

“In all, the prosecution has proved this case beyond reasonable doubt against the defendant. The sentence for the offence of rape under the Child Rights Law is mandatory; he is sentenced to life imprisonment.”

“Thereafter, they tried unsuccessfully to dump me inside my well. Following my shout, my neighbours called the police who came on time in a patrol van. “I was taken to a hospital by the police for treatment due to the deep machete cuts sustained in both arms.

#Endsars :I was a victim of police brutality even as governor – Kayode Fayemi

The Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, said on Sunday that he was a victim of police brutality as a governor while seeking re-election in 2014.

Fayemi, who said the EndSARS protests  by the youth were a noble cause, added that there was the need for the governments to partner the youth for sustainable peace.

This was as the Minister of Trade, Chief Adeniyi Adebayo, assured Nigerians that the President, Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), would implement the youth’s demands.

Fayemi and Adeniyi spoke in Ado Ekiti during an interaction session with stakeholders’ on the EndSARS protest.

The governor said, “I am a victim of police brutality myself”. You can all recall what happened to me during my election of 2014. However, some policemen had also rendered good services to me; so, not all of them are bad. Our police must be motivated to do well.

Fayemi, who said the youths were angry over sundry issues, said the government had however done many intervention programmes, proscribed SARS and introduced youth investment fund and many others as a response to youths’ agitations.

“I commiserate with the families of those who paid the supreme price. The panels that we set up will look will into how best to address the issues raised, because EndSARS protest had placed a moral burden on all of us,” he said.

Adebayo, who said that Buhari wanted to use the interaction to feel the pulse of Nigerians, advised the younger ones to apply for youth oriented programmes being rolled out by the Federal Government.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 17, comprising Ondo and Ekiti states, Mr David Folawiyo, said the EndSARS protests had exhumed fundamental issues indicative of the rots in the system. The Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria, Mr Eyitayo Fabunmi, called for total reform of the police “so that they can be more professional and civil in the discharge of their duties.”

Participants were drawn from civil society groups, non-governmental organisations, National Union of Road Transport Workers, youth representatives, and Christian Association of Nigeria, among others to brainstorm on the way forward after the #EndSARS protests.

Reading the communique, the Chairman of the forum, Mr Emmanuel Enebeli called for the overhaul of the nation’s security architecture,.

He said, “Stakeholders also resolved that police personnel should return to their duty of protecting live and property. We still need the police in our roads, now hoodlums have taken over the roads”.

It is wrong for the government to launch a fresh onslaught against #EndSARS protesters, campaigners and those who provided survival package to the protesters; freezing their accounts and scapegoating others who are being secretly harassed while placating Nigerians with judicial panels of inquiries.”

In a related development, the team instituted by the Inspector General of Police to assess the losses suffered by the police the violence that accompanied the hijact of the #EndSARS protest has visited facilities attacked in Osun State.

Workers of Ekiti State University Protest Alleged Irregularities in Salary.

Aggrieved members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities at the Ekiti State University have protested the alleged irregularities in the payment of their salaries.

The workers, who demonstrated on Thursday within the university campus in Ado Ekiti the state capital, accused the management of the institution of continually paying them half month salaries.

Chanting solidarity songs, the university workers said for more than 15 months, they had been subjected to untold hardship in the institution despite their services.

Florence Daudu, Vice Chairman of the union, said workers had been receiving unnecessary deductions any time their wages were paid by the university management.

She said, “We got an amputated and fractional 60 per cent of September salary with 100 per cent Ekiti State Government tax and pension deductions.

“This payment contravenes the general order and convention on the take-home of an employee.

“On no condition should an employee go home with less than 66.66 per cent of his gross after statutory deductions, commitment, and obligations.

“It is essential to inform the governor of Ekiti State that EKSU staff are yet to receive the October salary, this was not your promise during the electioneering campaign.”

According to her, Governor Kayode Fayemi had pledged to increase the subvention given to the institution from N260m to N400m but that was yet to be fulfilled.

Secretary of the union, Azeez Aguda, said other agitations of the workers include the non-remittance of over 25 months contributory pension to various payment platforms of account.

He added that over 1000 members of staff were disengaged in December 2019 unjustly, noting that the management of the school does not care about their welfare.

“We need the management to address the non-remittance of over 15 months staff cooperative deductions amounting to N2.4bn.

“And the non-payment of three months outstanding salaries of July, August and September 2018 because if all these are not done, then they should be expecting an industrial action from us,” he said.

Spokesperson for the university, Mr Bode Olofinmuagun, could not be reached for comments at the time of this report.

Anxiety as WAEC Withholds results of Ekiti candidates over alleged indebtedness

Panic has gripped parents and candidates who sat for the 2020 West African Examinations Council (WAEC), as the body withheld the results of all candidates that sat for it in all public schools in Ekiti State.

Parents and wards, who besieged their respective schools to collect the results released a few days ago were disappointed, as they were told that they are yet to be released.

The same disappointing scenario played out in some of the cybercafés (ICT centres) where the candidates had gone to check their results in Ado Ekiti metropolis.

WAEC, on Monday released results across the country through a well publicized statement signed by its Registrar.

The 2020 edition of the examination was the most tension soaked in the history of the country, as the schedules had to be shifted from April to August due to the global COVID-19 pandemic that necessitated closure of schools across the country.

The candidates and their parents got more incensed by the rumour flying around on social media that the results were withheld due to Governor Kayode Fayemi’s government’s indebtedness to WAEC.

It was being widely rumoured that the state is still owing several millions of naira being the free WAEC fee declared for all students in public schools by Fayemi, as part of the pivot of his free education policy.

The state government has been paying the WAEC fee of all students in public schools since the advent of Fayemi’s second term in 2018.

One of the parents said: “The government must have pity on these students who had to stay at home for months before the examination was written.

“They must please look for ways to sort out whatever caused this unwholesome development, because many of the candidates will use the results for university admission. We plead and beg that the government must do this fast”.

But the State Commissioner for Information, Mr, Akin Omole, doused the tension generated, debunking the allegation that the state’s indebtedness to WAEC necessitated the withholding of the results.

Omole clarified that the results were put on hold owing to computation mistakes made by WAEC and not because of debt.

“The seizure was caused by the mistakes made in some of the ways the results were computed. The issue of Ekiti owing money doesn’t arise, it was a blatant lie.

“The government immediately contacted WAEC and it tendered apologies to the state.

“We appeal to our candidates and parents not to be ruffled by this, the government is handling the issue with all seriousness.

“Going by what WAEC said, the results will be released either on Thursday or Friday this week.”

800,000 babies die due to poor breastfeeding annually – Ekiti Commissioner

The Ekiti State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, has disclosed that no fewer than 800,000 babies die of poor breastfeeding yearly across the globe.

Oyebanji stated that poor breastfeeding was largely responsible for high infant mortality in Nigeria, which he said was being gradually checkmated due to the advent of exclusive breastfeeding and improved medical practices.

Filani spoke in Ado Ekiti on Thursday at a press parley commemorating the 2020 edition of breastfeeding week in Ekiti State.

The Commissioner said Ekiti was rated as having 55.4 percent compliance with the first six months exclusive breastfeeding in 2019, saying the improvement in Ekiti was due to the proactive action taken by Governor Kayode Fayemi to increase sensitization in the state.

“Findings have shown that investing in breastfeeding will prevent 13 percent of child deaths and morbidity if 90 percent of mothers exclusively breastfeed their infants for the first six months of life.

“Globally, only 38 percent of infants are exclusively breastfed and sub-optimal breastfeeding contributes to 800,000 infant deaths globally on annual basis.

“So, any baby who is exclusively breastfed for the first six months without any formula has fewer ear infections, respiratory illnesses, and bouts of diarrhea and has fewer hospitalizations and trips to the doctor.

“It is so significant that it has helped to remove the myth and unacceptable use of herbs and concoctions for neonate and young children”.
