Edo youth accused of killing wife over food

The police in Edo State have arrested a 21-year-old youth, Salami Anedu, for allegedly killing his wife, Esther Friday, 21, following a misunderstanding over food.

The suspect was paraded by the Edo State Police Command alongside other suspects arrested for various crimes in the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, said Anedu was arrested on August 30 by men from the Fugar Police Division.

He said one Aluaye Momoh reported to the police that Anedu used a stick to kill his wife during a misunderstanding at their house in Ugbekpe community.

Nwabuzor said the police stormed the scene and arrested the suspect before taking the corpse to the Fugar General Hospital mortuary.

According to him, the case was transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Benin, for investigation.

In an interview with journalists, the suspect, while denying killing his wife, said he had a quarrel with her over food.

He said, “She cooked rice and said I should not eat from the food. I went to cook yam and egg on my own, but she said I could not eat the food. As I was still eating the food, she started quarreling with me and threatened to bring her brothers to my house to beat me up.

“I thought she was joking. But she came back with two of her brothers, who were armed with sticks and they started fighting me. After the fight, my wife went to my mother’s house to pass the night, but I was surprised when vigilantes came to arrest me that I killed my wife.

“I didn’t kill my wife; I didn’t hit her with wood. It was her brothers that came to my house with wood but because I dragged with them, they said I was the one that killed her. My wife was sick before.”

Aregbesola launches e-passport in Edo, warns against extortion

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, on Tuesday, warned men of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Edo State Command, to shun acts capable of working against the Federal Government’s efforts to ensuring that Nigerians could procure international passports with ease.

He said the ministry under his watch would not hesitate to deal with officials of the service engaged in any illegal dealings, noting that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was desirous of improving service delivery in the country.

Aregbesola, who stated these on Tuesday at the official roll-out of the Enhanced e-Passport in Benin, Asaba and Warri as well as the commissioning of the Passport Office, said 10,000 e-passports were available on the platform for applicants and noted that the ministry was committed to changing the perception of service delivery for the better.

“For our men who are quick to tell people that there are no passports just to exploit them, those who give unkind and harsh treatment to passport seekers will be dealt with henceforth.

“President Buhari’s desire is to ensure that Nigerians get their international passport both home and abroad. So, what we are doing now is to remove all the obstacles,” the minister said.

He added that the enhanced e-passport carries 25 additional security features and is rated to be among the best in the world in terms of durability and quality.

The Acting Comptroller-General, Nigeria Immigration Service, Idris Jere, said with the unveiling in Edo, other states in the South-South have migrated to the enhanced e-passport.

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who accompanied the minister to the commissioning, said the unveiling will bring relief to passport seekers and ease the application process.

He said the state government would join the ministry in fighting touting in passport applications.

‘A dead political party incapable of mounting viable opposition in Edo,’ PDP mocks APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State on Sunday branded the All Progress Congress (APC) a “dead political party” over its inability to offer a viable opposition in the state.

In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary in the state, Dr. Patrick Ojebuoboh, the PDP said the APC only announced its presence via periodic press statements without making any meaningful impact on the residents.

The statement read: “The All Progressives Congress in the state has become a dead political party, with none of its organs functioning, hence its inability to provide the seriously needed perspective and constructive criticism that is expected of a viable opposition party.

With the spectacular failure that the APC has exhibited at the national level, the party has left the nation’s economy in shreds, setting bandits on the loose across the country and abandoning the people in unprecedented hardship with astronomical energy and food prices that are beyond the reach of the common man.

“It is easy to see why the Edo State APC has degenerated from a stage where it was just limping to its present condition of being completely comatose.

“Once in a while, a certain Assistant Publicity Secretary of the party dishes out lies and complete falsehood just to create the sense that the APC, which is now dead in Edo, may still have some life left.”

The party urged the APC to form a merger with smaller political parties in order to survive.

“The PDP, as well as the government and people of Edo State, is calling on the comatose party, to either put an end to the joke called the All Progressives Congress in Edo State and come over to the only party alive in the state, which is the PDP or merge with other small political parties in order to make a reasonable impact.”

‘PDP will produce Buhari’s successor in 2023,’ says Edo deputy gov, Shaibu

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, on Saturday, expressed optimism that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in 2023.

Shaibu, who stated this during his speech at the ongoing ward congress in Oyo State, added that all the PDP required to win the 2023 election was to put its house in order and step up operations ahead of the exercise.

He said: “We will be able to take over the Federal Government. All PDP states’ policies currently yielding positive results will add up to making Nigeria great again.

“We are fulfilling that obligation to make sure that the congress in the 351 wards across the state is peaceful and credible.

“I had discussions with some other members of the party and they have accepted to put their grievances aside and work for the common good.

“Majority of the people are in support of the peaceful reconciliation process and the discussions that are still ongoing.”

Pregnant woman, 15 others die from COVID-19 in Edo

The Edo State government on Monday confirmed the death of a 33-year-old pregnant woman and 15 other COVID-19 cases in the state.

The Head of the state’s COVID-19 Case Management, Dr. Ebomwonyi Osagie, who disclosed this at a media briefing in Benin, said the woman died at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital in the state capital.

He said the victims were not vaccinated.

Osagie said: “This particular patient came in and died about three hours after presentation at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital. Late presentation is a major issue in managing crises.

“She was about 28 weeks pregnant, already having pre-eclampsia, so, the debate is actually if it is the pre-eclampsia that killed her or COVID-19.

The woman has COVID-19 which pushed her more toward developing pre-eclampsia and then death. Some other women have pre-eclampsia and are successfully managed.

“Late presentation was an issue because the patient died three hours after the presentation. This means that there was little that would have been done to manage the situation. So, we are appealing to private hospitals to let patients go very early for treatment.

“So far we have collected 537 samples with a total of 1,004 confirmed cases. 103 patients recovered and were discharged and 16 deaths recorded within 48 hours.

“We have 70 people in admission, 296 people in-home care, 344 discharged, and 50 deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic.”

The Edo State Police Command on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of five suspected kidnappers in Ahon community along the Benin/Lagos Road.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Philip Ogbadu, stated this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), George Edem, at the Corps command headquarters in Benin.

Ogbadu said the suspects were arrested after receiving a distress call from the area.

He called for collaboration and support among sister security agencies to make their job easier.

The police commissioner said: “We are here to serve the people of Edo, so there is a need for joint service for the good of the people.

“I have tried to make an impact and a difference in the last 21 days after assuming office as the CP in the state.

“After the #EndSARS the morale of people became low but, we need to inject life into it.”

He also harped on the need for security chiefs to talk to their personnel to avoid friction and clashes while carrying out their duties.

“We are brothers, so let us not clash. We will encourage our personnel as much as possible,” Ogbadu added.

In his address, Edem said the NSCDC command in the state has the capacity to fight crimes.

He added that the corps would work with the police command to the state.
