National Assembly worker falls from stairs, dies

A worker with the National Assembly, Abdul Olajide Abayomi, fell down from the stairs at the Assembly complex and died on Monday.

Abayomi, 34, worked with the Inter-Parliamentary Department under the Directorate of Inter-Parliamentary and Protocols in the National Assembly.

Eyewitnesses told journalists the deceased was on his way to the second floor of the White House section of the complex when he slipped and rolled down the stairs.

He was taken to the National Assembly Clinic for medical attention by his colleagues but died on the way.

Doctors confirmed that he died of cardiac arrest and other underlying ailments.

German ambassador to China dies few weeks into his posting

The German Ambassador to China, Jan Hecker, who resumed at his duty post on August 24, has died at 54, according to a statement posted on the German Embassy to China’s website on Monday.

Hecker had worked as a foreign policy adviser to German Chancellor Angela Merkel before taking up his ambassadorial posting in Beijing.

“We are deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the sudden death of the German Ambassador to China,” the spokesperson of the German Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“Our hearts are with his family and his friends and colleagues at this time.”

Prior to his appointment, Hecker had served as Director of the Department of Foreign Policy, Security and Development Policy and had been Merkel’s foreign policy adviser since 2017, the embassy in Beijing said on its official Weibo account.

“I am deeply shocked by the death of Jan Hecker,” said Merkel in a written statement Monday.

“I mourn the loss of a highly esteemed adviser of many years, with deep humanity and outstanding expertise.

“I think of our cooperation with gratitude and am glad to have been so closely associated with him over the years.

“My deepest sympathy goes to his wife, children and other relatives in their immeasurable grief.”

General Overseer of Redemption Ministries, Stephen Akinola dies at 68

Reverend Stephen Akinola, General Overseer Of Redemption Ministries, Worldwide, has died.

BBC Pidgin reports that the popular Port Harcourt-based Pastor died in the early hours of Sunday, 6th of June, at an undisclosed hospital in Abuja.

It was gathered that Akinola had a kidney transplant months back though the cause of his death is yet to be confirmed.

Members of his congregation were said to have rushed to the church headquarters in Port Harcourt to mourn the famous cleric when the news broke.

Former Chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria as well as former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Rivers State, Apostle Eugene Ogu confirmed Akinola’s demise on Sunday.

“Yes, it is a very sad day for the Christian community. While we were still talking of Prophet TB Joshua, Akinola’s death happened”, he said.

Akinola, 68, is a native of Igboho, Oyo State.

His death comes just as Nigerians are mourning Prophet TB Joshua of the Synagogue Church of All Nations who died on Saturday, June 5.

Bride dies on wedding day but ceremony continues with groom marrying her sister

An Indian bride died at the venue of her wedding and the ceremony continued with the groom marrying her younger sister.

The bride, who has been identified as Surabhi, died of a heart attack during her wedding ceremony in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Following her sudden death in the presence of family and wedding guests, the families laid her body in the room next door as her groom worked on his backup plan.

According to eyewitnesses, groom, Manjesh Kumar was in the middle of exchanging vows with his fiancée, Surabhi, when she died in front of him.

Doctors rushed to her side but despite their best efforts, she was pronounced dead of cardiac arrest moments later, local media reports.

However, Surabhi’s uncle Ajab Singh told news agency IANS that the families made the decision to have Kumar wed her younger sister, Nisha, instead, which he claims was a “tough call” for them.

He said: “One daughter lay dead in one room and the wedding of another daughter was being solemnised in the other room. We have never witnessed such mixed emotions.

“The grief over her death and the happiness of the wedding have yet to sink in.”

Surabhi’s brother, Saurabh, added that they did not know what to do in the situation at first.

He said: “Both the families sat together and someone suggested that my younger sister Nisha should be married to the groom. The families discussed the matter and both agreed.”

The story has since gone viral on social media, with an image of sisters Surabhi and Nisha on the day of the wedding emerging.

News of the wedding has been viewed more than 260 million times on Weibo.

William Shakespeare dies five months after taking COVID-19 vaccine

William Shakespeare, the first man in the world to take the first jab of COVID-19 vaccine, has died.

He was 81.

William’s name and face graced the front page of publications and media outlets on December 8 2020 after receiving his vaccine at the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

The pensioner from Coventry died last Thursday, May 20, at the same hospital, of an unrelated illness.

Local councillor Ms Jayne Innes has described him as a “much-loved figure” with the Coventry Labour party, The Mirror reports.

Innes said: “He was such a lovely man, one who had a real commitment to making his local area better.

“During lockdown local families will have enjoyed walking amongst the trees planted by Bill and his colleagues in Allesley back in the 1980s.

“He was also very involved with the creation of the Coundon Wood in 2005 and in fundraising for the purchase of Elkin Wood, now managed by the Woodland Trust in 1997.”

William once worked at Rolls Royce and was also a school governor at Allesley Primary School, as well as at Coundon Court School.

The grandfather leaves behind his wife and two sons.

Chief of Army staff, Ibrahim Attahiru dies in plane crash

Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, General Ibrahim Attahiru, has died in a plane crash.

A military Beachcraft 350 aircraft crashed at the Kaduna International Airport on Friday, claiming all eight souls onboard including the Army chief.

Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Accident Investigation Bureau, Nigeria, Akin Olateru, told The Punch that the eight souls died onboard.

Also, the Nigerian Army spokesman, Yerima Mohammed confirmed the development to BBC.

Attahiru was appointed Chief of Army Staff on January 26, 2021.

Nigeria’s civil society mourns, as another activist, Innocent Chukwuma, dies

The civil society in Nigeria has been thrown into another round of mourning following the death of frontline activist, Dr Innocent Chukwuma, who died on Saturday night after being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.

This came soon after the death of Afenifere spokesman, Yinka Odumakin.

Chukwuma’s death was announced by frontline freedom of expression advocate and the Executive Director of Media Rights Agenda, Edetaen Ojo, on Sunday.

In a brief statement, Ojo said:

“With profound shock and sadness, I regret to inform you that Innocent Chukwuma passed away in the evening of April 3. May his soul rest in peace.”

Also reacting to the death of the activist, former Senator representing Kaduna Central senatorial district in the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, took to his Twitter handle to express his shock.

“Innocent Chukwuma; another tragic loss of a patriot. Death hath taken away one of the brightest.May his Soul Rest In Peace.”

Chukwuma who was 55 at the time of his death, was the Regional Director, Ford Foundation, West Africa, and began activism as a student union leader in the 1980s.

The deceased, who was passionate about police reforms, set up CLEEN Foundation in January 1998 with the mission of promoting public safety, security, and accessible justice through the strategies of empirical research, legislative advocacy, demonstration programmes, and publications, in partnership with government, civil society, and the private sector.

He was among the biggest advocates for police reforms and helped champion the amendment of the Police Service Act last year.

His wife, Dr. Josephine Effa-Chukwuma, who is also an activist, is the founder of the Project Alert on Violence Against Women.

Ogun ex-commissioner for Education, Odubela, dies of Covid-19

A former Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology in Ogun State, Mr John Segun Odubela (SAN) is dead.

He was a Commissioner during the first term in office of the former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

Odunela, a Managing Partner of Rickey Tarfa & Co died of COVID-19 complications in the early hours of Tuesday, at a private hospital in Lagos at 55 years old.

Untill his death, he was a member of the International Bar Association and Nigerian Bar Association. And was elevated to the status of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on the 18th of September, 2017.

LASTMA official dies after being knocked down by runaway driver

An officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) identified as Samsom Akinmade has been killed on duty in Mile 12, Ketu area of Lagos.

The General Manager of the agency, Engr. Olajide Oduyoye, disclosed on Thursday, that the deceased who sustained head and body injuries was knocked down on Tuesday, but was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital where he was declared dead in the early hours of Wednesday.

Mr Oduyoye explained that the officer who was directing yellow buses away from the Demurin Street Junction choke point had approached the motorist to park away from the road to pick passengers.

He was hit by a driver of a blue-black Opel Space Bus with registration number AAA 74 GG at Demurin Street junction inwards Mile 12.

“The driver assumed that he would be apprehended for obstructing traffic and sped off, knocking down the officer against the concrete culvert on the service lane and dragging him for about seven metres. He tried to escape through a street which turned out to be closed but was eventually arrested and handed over to the Police at Alapere along with his vehicle”, Oduyoye explained.

The agency on its Twitter handle quoted the General Manager as saying “This event is particularly sad because this was a young, intelligent and dedicated officer employed in the year 2019, was very committed to his job but has been cut down in his prime by a careless and lawless driver thereby depriving his family, the government agency, Lagos and Nigeria of a future leader in the making.”

He sympathized with the colleagues at the Lagos Ministry of Transportation and LASTMA and with the family of the deceased, while pledging that the State Government will ensure that the apprehended driver faces justice.

Oduyoye also warned motorists to desist from violating the State Traffic Law in order to prevent unnecessary accidents and deaths on Lagos roads, urging commuters to exercise patience at all times.

Policeman dies after beating by DSS operatives in Osogbo

A police Corporal, Fawale Rauf, said to have been beaten by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, is dead.

Rauf, who until his death served with Dada Estate, Osogbo Police Post, was said to have been invited to a bar by the DSS operatives somewhere in town, where he was reportedly beaten to a state of coma and left unattended to.

Sources say the policeman was later rushed to Osun State Teaching Hospital, Osogbo for medical attention where he gave up the ghost on Sunday.

According to an eyewitness, Rauf was beaten by the DSS operatives with objects like rods and sticks.

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the death of the officer, but declined to provide further details.
