Baba Ijesha jailed 16 years

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on Thursday sentenced a Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, aka Baba Ijesha, to 16 years imprisonment.

Lagos govt closes case against Baba Ijesha

The Lagos State government on Wednesday closed its case against Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju James, aka Baba Ijesha, who is standing trial for alleged child molestation.

The state’s Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs. Olayinka Adeyemi, disclosed this after the cross-examination of the sixth prosecution witness by the defence team.

She said: “The prosecution has closed its case against the defendant.”

Following the DPP’s statement, the defence counsel, Kayode Olabiran, told the court the defendant would file a no-case submission.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo accepted the actor’s confessional statement to the police as evidence.

She ruled that there was no evidence before the court to prove that the defendant was tortured into making the statement to the police.

The judge said: “Sitting on the floor does not vitiate the confessional statement. The statement is found to be relevant and admissible.

“We will take the no-case submission in the New Year; the court is rounding up.”

The state government arraigned the Nollywood star on charges of indecent treatment of a child, defilement of a child, sexual assault by penetration, attempted sexual assault by penetration, and sexual assault.

He was charged for alleged sexual assault on the daughter of a comedienne, Princess, in 2013.

Update: Court grants Baba Ijesha bail

A Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State, has granted bail to Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, also known as Baba Ijesha in the sum of N2million with two sureties.

Baba Ijesha was arrested and detained by the Lagos state police after he was alleged to have sexually molested a minor twice.

The minor is the14-year-old foster child of a popular comedian, known as Princess.

During Omiyinka’s trial on Thursday, the court held that one of the sureties must be a blood relation, resident in Lagos, and must have a tax clearance certificate of three years preceding today. Such relation must also make a monetary bond of N1million to the Chief Registrar of the court.

The other surety must be a legal practitioner whose call to bar certificate must be verified by the court.

He has seven days to perfect the bail but today he was released to the head of the legal team, Babatunde Ogala SAN.

The court then adjourned to the 26th, 27th, and 28th of July for the prosecution to open its case against the defendant.

Lagos court denies Baba Ijesha bail in child molestation case

A Lagos state magistrate’s court has denied Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha bail in the ongoing trial over alleged sexual assault.

Baba Ijesha was arrested and detained by the Lagos state police after he was alleged to have sexually molested a minor twice.

The minor is the14-year-old foster child of a popular comedian, known as Princess.

Baba Ijesha was granted bail on May 17 — after spending about 25 days in police detention over a move to decongest the prison.

However, he has remained in police custody despite the bail.

During the trial on Wednesday, Kayode Olabiran, his counsel, prayed the court to release his client, citing his deteriorating health, The Cable reports.

He said the controversial nature of the case has made it difficult to secure his release despite his bail as intending sureties were scared of the likely consequences.

But in his ruling, the judge, P. E. Nwaka, held that the court could not grant the actor bail because the matter was beyond its jurisdiction.

The judge also explained that the case had already been filed before the high court.

Also speaking, Yetunde Cardoso, the superintendent of police in charge of the case, said the matter was already beyond the police.

“Mr Olanrewaju was actually granted bail during the JUSUN (Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria) strike and based on the conditions given, he couldn’t meet them and he was properly charged today (Wednesday).

“Just like the court stated, the case has already been filed before the high court and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of Lagos State Ministry of Justice has taken over the matter from the police.

“So presently, we have handed over to the DPP so the case is before them (DPP). It has nothing to do with the police anymore, it’s now left for the DPP to handle it,” she said.

Police confirm Baba Ijesha will remain in custody pending legal advice

The Lagos State Police Command says comic Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, will remain in custody pending legal advice.

Specifically, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, made this known while parading suspects at the command’s headquarters on Thursday.

According to him, Baba Ijesha would remain in custody pending the legal advice from the Ministry of Justice, as all the parties involved, including the victim and the accused, were questioned at the police command on Wednesday.

His words: “You don’t do trial on pages of the newspaper. There are two cases involved in the Baba Ijebu case: he was alleged seven years ago to have defiled a girl and the girl is now 14 years. At that time, no complaint was made, but last week, a video went viral where he was arrested for sexual assault.

When a man touches a woman where he is not supposed to, without authority and consent, that is what is called sexual assault. That is exactly what is there. He admitted that he assaulted.

“The case of defilement added to it is still under thorough investigation. Sexual assault is a bailable offence, it is not like rape. For three hours yesterday (Wednesday), they were all with me, I interviewed all of them, one after the other, including the girl that was allegedly assaulted, the mother of the girl, and Baba Ijesha.

“We have compiled the case and sent it to the DPP, Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State, for legal advice. Based on legal advice, action would be taken, but for now, Baba Ijesha is still in our custody.

In two seconds that I had left the house, he checked everywhere in my house to ensure that no one was home or the children were sleeping. He checked the whole house for cameras, then he started. I cannot even begin to say the things that he did. My body was shaking because we were monitoring it on the phone.

At a point when she stood up to go to the kitchen, I knew that there was no camera in the kitchen so people came in and we called the police. The police came immediately to pick him up.”

However, in a video Iyabo shared on social media she blasted Ijesha and colleagues defending the actor.
