Two dead as ex-president, Goodluck Jonathan escapes death in fatal accident

Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan has survived a fatal auto crash which left two of his security aides dead.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday evening while he was heading home from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

An aide who confirmed the sad development to Leadership, said the ex-president was fine and unhurt.

Jonathan described the incident as a painful one, and added that the sudden death of the two security details has thrown him into deep mourning.

It was also learnt that he and his wife, Patience Jonathan visited the emergency unit of the National Hospital, Abuja to see victims of the accident.

Six die in Bauchi auto crash

At least six persons were confirmed dead in an auto crash along the Jama’are-Azare road in Bauchi on Sunday.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Yusuf Abdullahi the Sector Commander, who confirmed the accident to journalists on Monday, said 15 others were seriously injured in the crash that occurred at Kwanan Digiza village on Sunday morning.

He said a Toyota Hiace bus belonging to the Kano Line transport company was involved in the lone accident.

Abdullahi said: “There was a crash yesterday (Sunday) involving a Kano line commercial vehicle and six people lost their lives to the crash. The six people that died were all females.”

“The crash was caused by speed violation. A total of 21 persons were involved in the crash, including four males, 14 females, one male child, and two female children.

“Among the 15 injured persons were four males, eight females, one male child, and two female children.

“The injured and the corpses had been taken to the Jama’are General hospital for treatment and confirmation.”

11 die in Kwara auto crash

At least 11 persons were confirmed dead in a motor accident along the Bode Saadu-Jebba Road in Kwara State on Sunday.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Jonathan Owoade, who confirmed the incident to journalists in Ilorin, said the crash involved a private Toyota Corolla with registration number AAA 250 CB and a commercial Toyota Hiace bus with registration number LAP 179 XA.

He said while 26 people were involved in the accident, 11 victims died and 15 others injured.

Owoade said: “This evening we received a distress call of a crash which happened at about 4:00 p.m. at Onipako village, along Bode-Saadu-Jebba Road.

The accident was caused by overtaking. 26 persons were involved, 15 injured and unfortunately 11 others lost their lives.

This is another unfortunate crash we pray not to witness again. I plead with motorists especially commercial drivers to be patient when they are on the wheel.

“Life has no duplicate.”

The FRSC official said the injured persons had been taken to Jebba medical centre and Emmanuel Hospital, Jebba, while the corpses were deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) morgue.

Five die in Bayelsa auto crash

Five persons died on Thursday in a ghastly motor accident along Tombia-Amassoma road in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The spokesman of the state police command, SP Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday, said the accident involved a Toyota Venza with Reg. N0. KMK 617 BY and two Tricycles with Reg. No. NSK 073 QH and LND 223 QH.

He said: “Five corpses were evacuated from the scene and three of them have been identified.

“The other two corpses are a middle-aged man and a woman.

“One of the victims has also been identified as a staff of the popular hangout in Yenagoa, Asters and a student of the State-owned Niger Delta University Amassoma.”

Butswat added that police operatives are on the trail of the driver of the Toyota Venza, Augusta Nyoun, who fled from the scene of the accident.

“The police operatives have launched a manhunt for the woman who drove the Venza for possible culpable homicide.

“An investigation is ongoing to arrest the fleeing woman. The sketch marks on the scene of the accident had been taken and investigation is ongoing.”
