Police confirm arrest of Labour Party senatorial candidate who is Governor Umahi’s opponent

Ebonyi state police command has said that Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South Senatorial zone, Linus Okorie is in its custody.

It was reported earlier that the two-term House of Representative candidate who represented Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo Federal Constituency, was taken away by “gunmen” on Sunday morning.

Ebonyi police command spokesperson, Chris Anyanwu who confirmed that Linus who is Governor David Umahi’s opponent in 2023 senatorial election was arrested by Ebubeagu Security operatives and taken to Old Government House Abakaliki, debunked reports that he was abducted.

He said the Police upon hearing reports that Linus was abducted, swung into action and later traced him to the head office of the Ebubeagu Security Outfit at the Old Government House, Abakaliki.

Anyanwu revealed that Okorie was arrested for inciting violence in the State, falsely accusing Governor David Umahi and alleged involvement in drug related offences.

He said;

“Police detectives were briefed on why he was arrested which include his activities and utterances that incited and provoked the violence that engulfed Onicha LGA which led to suspected IPOB/ESN operatives or unknown gunmen to unleash mayhem in the area, leaving seven (7) persons dead at the end of that fracas.

“Hence, the case has now been taken over by the Police Command for a scrupulous investigation.”

Anyanwu also alleged Okorie was severally invited by the Security and Intelligence Bureau of the Command over a petition dated 23/3/2022 by the Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice, alleging that he was spreading fake news against Umahi.

In the petition, Okorie allegedly accused the Governor of illegally withdrawing N6.7 billion from State Government’s Account to fund the Appeal Court Judgment against his removal from office, etc.

The police spokesperson added;

“Similar to the above is another series of false allegations against the Government of Ebonyi State and the Police Command in his social media handles.

“When invited by the SIB over the false allegations/petition,Honourable Linus Abaa Okorie in his characteristic pompous manner refused vehemently to report to the SIB for a chat. Rather he chose to file fallacious suits against the Police Command.

“It is also pertinent to mention that Honourable Linus Abaa Okorie also have a pending case in which he is implicated in a drug-related offence where the suspects purported to be his agents were arrested for Hard drug sales and use at his City Hub Inn, Mile 50, Abakaliki. Case was later transfered to the NDLEA for further necessary actions.

“Ebubeagu is a lawfully established local security outfit by the House of Assembly and Government of Ebonyi State. If the outfit as empowered by the State Law, arrests anybody, it shouldn’t be interpreted as abduction or kidnapping because those terms mean different things.

“However, it is expected that the outfit after effecting such arrest, should hand over the matter to the Police for further investigation and other necessary actions which has played out in this instance”.

“In view of the above, Dr David Ogbonna of Hon Linus Okorie CaringHeart Foundation is warned to henceforth know the implication of wrong choice of words when next dishing out information for public consumption otherwise he will face the dire consequences as enshrined in the laws of the land.”

Arrest warrant issued for Big Brother US winner Mike ‘Boogie’ Malin

A California judge has issued an arrest warrant for Big Brother US winner Mike “Boogie” Malin.

The judge who revoked Malin’s probation, issued the arrest warrant after he failed to show up in court for a hearing related to his felony stalking case. He also set Malin’s bail at $20k after revoking his probation.

TMZ reported that Malin was due in court two weeks ago for a “proof of live-in program” hearing but he didn’t show up. His public defender took the blame and the judge moved the court date to Wednesday September 28.

The reality show star also failed to show up after being given a second chance.

Malin, who won season 7 of the reality series also failed to pick up his calls after the judge ordered the public defender to call him.

Malin pled no contest to felony stalking last year in a case involving his former ‘BB’ buddy Dr. Will Kirby, and he was sentenced to 2 years probation and ordered to pay Will more than $44k.

Malin’s latest public defender told the judge his client doesn’t have the money to pay the restitution.

Why arrest Kanu and spare Gumi? – Bayelsa Governor queries Buhari

Governor of Bayelsa state, Duoye Diri has questioned the decision of the President Muhammadu Buhari government to arrest leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, while giving a pass to renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, despite his alleged link to bandits.

Diri stated this on Tuesday, when he featured on a Channels TV programme, where he noted that Gumi had become somebody no one could touch, adding that it was very unfair.

The governor said; “Two things I have to say; first, they should give him (Nnamdi Kanu) a fair hearing so that the trial will not be done in a way that everyone (especially the Igbo) will see it as oppression.

“Second, as we talk about the IPOB, what about the boys (bandits and herdsmen) organising killings in the North and in the whole country? What of Sheik Gumi? He has become somebody no one can touch. That’s very unfair.”

Gumi had recently warned the government against the killing of bandits, insisting that the criminals were victims too.

Last Tuesday, Nigeria’s Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami, announced the rearrest of Nnamdi Kanu and listed the allegations against him, saying he must continue his court trial in earnest.

Asari-Dokubo mocks Nnamdi Kanu over arrest

Former militant commander and head of the Biafra Customary Government (BCG) Mujaheed Asari-Dokubo, has taunted the leader of the Igbo separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, over his re-arrest and repatriation to Nigeria by the Federal Government.

In a video on Sunday, the leader of the Niger Delta People Salvation Force (NDPSF), who had earlier fallen out with Kanu and vowed to bring him down, said he was going to destroy Kanu’s “evil empire”.

In the 10 minutes video, Dokubo boasted that he had promised to smoke out Kanu wherever he was hiding and had achieved that by the arrest of the dissident.

Nnamdi Kanu, I promised you I would smoke you out. You never started your madness, but now you’re bringing it, so the market’s closed and you’re gone. You have harmed Biafrans and traded with us so much,” he said.

“You collected our money in the name of defence funds and you have not been able to account for it.

“You want all Biafrans to pay you money on a monthly basis or they won’t be allowed into Biafra. Isn’t that making you a conman, an extortionist?

You claimed you gave me N20 million, but the video does not lie. It was so cowardly of you not to respond to my statement last year leading up to the election.

“I demanded the evidence that I demanded N20 million from you after you sent your followers to respond to me and they said a lot of things.

“I am not a member of IPOB, you gave me N20 million, tell us was it a bank transfer, was it cash, who brought it to me? I’m waiting for you. Produce the proof.

“I can’t run away from my land because they will overrun it. I am not like you Ben Johnson… I fought all the way to the Supreme Court. My record is in the Supreme Court, you can check it”, he said

Video: DSS didn’t arrest me, I have government backing to meet bandits – Gumi

Popular Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has denied that he was invited or arrested by the Department of State Security (DSS), adding that the government was aware of his rapport with the bandits in the forests.

News media platforms reported on Friday that the cleric was invited by the DSS after he alleged that security agents collaborate with bandits to engage in killing and kidnapping for ransom.

However, Gumi debunked the reports after Jumaat prayer at Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna State on Friday.

He said; “Nobody invited me for questioning or any arrest, I can say that categorically.

Since I ventured into the forest, I went there with full security, the police, with the knowledge of the DSS, traditional rulers, the Fulani leaders, I never went alone.”

Gumi added that all along he and government officials have been engaging the bandits and their is no cause for alarm from the public.

All along, I have been doing it with the government and there is no difference between us and the authority. So people should have their peace,” the cleric said.

Kano govt arrests 200 street beggars, Almajiris

The Kano State Government has arrested 200 street beggars and Almajiri children for allegedly violating the law banning street begging in the state.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Zahra’u Muhammad-Umar, disclosed in Kano on Monday.

The word ‘Almajiri’ refers to the children of the non-formal Quranic schools commonly found in northern Nigeria.

Muhammad-Umar said following the ban on street begging in the state, the ministry arrested the beggars and almajiri children in the Kano metropolis with 60 per cent being women, children and men, while 30 per cent were almajiris.

Some of those arrested sleep under the bridge, while some on the streets. Most of the beggars and almajiri children are from Kaduna, Bauchi, Borno and Yobe, among others while only a few are from Kano State.

We noticed that because Kano is peaceful, that is why they came. It is very dangerous to leave them on the streets without knowing their parents, adding that bad behaviour is mostly found among the beggars. We will continue to arrest them to ensure sanity and rid the streets of all forms of crimes,” she said.

She explained that those arrested from other states would be transported to their states on Tuesday, and handed over to their parents.

She noted that the state would render some assistance to the almajiri children for them to be able to go back to school.

Meanwhile, Muhammad-Umar said the ministry also re-arrested a woman that was given N10,000 empowerment to be self-reliant but continued begging.

“I personally gave her N10,000 from my hard-earned money and she promised to stop street begging. I will make sure she is prosecuted,” she added.

While calling for closer collaboration with the government to curb street begging, she urged the people of the state, especially women, to take care of their children to be good citizens.

Muhammad-Umar also advocated for legislation on the prosecution of street beggars.

Recall that the Kano State Government on Feb. 5, arrested 500 beggars, transported them back to their various communities, and empowered about 60 of them with different entrepreneurial skills.
