Amid ban, AGF Malami’s screenshot shows VPN, Cryptocurrency icon

Attorney-General of the federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami’s Twitter deactivation screenshot which he shared on Facebook listed a major cryptocurrency platform and a Virtual Private Network, (VPN) icon on his mobile phone.

Malami shared the screengrab on Tuesday evening to confirm to Nigerians that he had deactivated his Twitter account in line with Federal government’s ban on the social networking app.

The Minister of Justice had threatened on Saturday that Nigerians still using Twitter after a press release announcing a ban on the social media platform would be arrested and charged, even though no law prohibiting such action has been enacted in the country.

Although, Malami’s deactivation of his Twitter account was a violation of the ban order, since he clearly has had to access the platform in order to deactivate it, some people are also seeing potential illegality from the crypto icon on his mobile.

The administration had previously banned all trading in cryptocurrencies in Nigeria, saying it was being used to launder money, fund terrorism, amongst other corrupt and nefarious activities.

Banks were also banned from accepting cryptocurrency transactions while some bank accounts that had been used to trade crypto in the past were frozen or restricted.

Although the CBN, which imposed the ban, said it was working to review it, no new guidelines authorising Nigerians to trade in cryptocurrency have been issued.

It was unclear why the attorney-general was running a crypto account.

Drama in court as AGF, IGP ‘fight’ over who to prosecute trial of ex-gov, Ohakim

There was drama on Thursday at a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, as the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) approached the court seeking to take over the case against the former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, on criminal charges of a threat to the life of his mistress, Chinyere Amuchienwa.

The court had earlier slated Thursday for the arraignment of the former governor but a counsel from the office of the AGF, Bagudu Sani, approached the Court, saying the office of the AGF had taken over the case by a letter dated March 17, 2021, which he said had been served on the IGP.

According to Sani, the office of the AGF took over the case from the IGP to ensure that the prosecution was done diligently.

However, counsel for the police, Rufus Dimka, opposed the taking over of the case by the office of AGF, noting that the charges against the former governor were prepared by the office of the IGP, who is the complainant in the case.

In response, Justice Taiwo Taiwo told Sani that he had taken judicial notice of the letter but maintained that the counsel should file the letter formally before the court.

He deferred the arraignment of the former governor to May 6, 2021, to enable parties to file and serve written addresses on the property of the office of the AGF taking over the case from the Police.

Ohakim has been on police administrative bail since November 11, 2020, when he and one Chinedu Okpareke were dragged to court by the police over allegations of threat to life and the harassment of Amuchienwa.

According to the charge number, FHC/ABJ/CS/287/2020, Ohakim and Okpareke were alleged to have threatened to release a nude photograph of Amuchienwa if she fails to drop charges of attempted kidnap against them.

The Police in the five counts dated November 25, 2020, alleged that Ohakim and Okpareke, knowingly and intentionally transmitted communication through a computer system to harass and bully Amuchienwa, an offence that is punishable under Section 24(1)(a) of the Cybercrime Act 2015.

AGF office not investigating Tinubu, but… –Malami

The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation is not investigating the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Bola Tinubu, the AGF, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has said.

Malami said this during an interview with Channels Television’s Politics Today’ programme on Tuesday.

The AGF, however, said he could not say if the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or the Code of Conduct Bureau were investigating Tinubu since the two agencies had statutory powers to commence probes and prosecute people.

Responding to a question, he said, “The Office of the AGF, as you rightly know, has not taken any decision, has not filed or instituted any action before any court in the land relating to Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

But then, within the context of the law, as you rightly know, the EFCC and the Code of Conduct Bureau are all statutory bodies vested with statutory powers to act within the context of the law establishing them. So, I am not in a position to give you a precise answer.

“The Office of the AGF and its arm, which is the Director of Public Prosecutions, has not initiated any proceedings and no investigation has been instituted at its instance by any agency of the government be it EFCC or the Code of Conduct Bureau.”

The EFCC had in November 2020 written a letter to the CCB requesting copies of Tinubu’s asset declaration form.

Some members of the family of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Boss Mustapha, have tested positive for the virus.

He announced this in a statement that he personally issued in Abuja on Sunday night.

The SGF informed that they tested positive on Saturday and are presently asymptomatic.

According to him, both himself and wife, however, tested negative.

He said in the statement: “I would like to inform the general public that some members of my household tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday evening.

Although they are currently asymptomatic, they have been isolated and are receiving care in one of the government treatment centres.

“My wife and I tested negative but will remain in self-isolation and work from home according to protocols by the health authorities.

“I would like to remind all Nigerians that COVID-19 is real. As the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced last week, we are recording an increase in cases across several states.

Please stay safe and protect yourself. Adhere to all public health and safety measures so that we do not lose the gains we have made in the fight against COVID-19.

“As a family, we covet your prayers. Please take responsibility for yourself and protect our country!”
