EndBadGovernance: Protesters didn’t want to end Tinubu’s government – Archbishop Onaiyekan

His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, the Emeritus Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, has said the EndBadGovernance protesters never wanted to end President Bola Tinubu’s administration but were against bad governance in the country.

Onaiyekan said the youths want to see Nigeria better managed than it is now.

He spoke at an event organised by the Christian Youth for Peace and Development Initiative in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to Onaiyekan: “The 10 days of #EndBadGovernance protests saw the young people coming out in large numbers. From my own opinion, they were not coming out to insult anybody.

“They didn’t say that they were ending Tinubu’s government. They simply said they want to end bad governance. Is there anything wrong with that? We all must be seen to be trying to end bad governance.

“But what has come up is that we all seem to agree that we can do better than what we are doing as far as governance and management of Nigeria is concerned.”

Stressing that he understands the impatience of the youths, the clergyman marvelled at the decision of the president asking them to be patient.

“I’m not sure whether he was very patient when he was 30 years old. He wasn’t patient.

“The young people cannot be patient, but they should not be patient. Because if they are patient, they will just sit down and do nothing,” he added.

Japan Prime Minister Kishida to step down

Japan’s unpopular Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is set to quit after announcing on Wednesday he will not seek re-election as party chief.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party, which has governed almost uninterrupted since 1945, is due to hold a leadership contest next month, with the winner to become prime minister.

“In this (party) presidential election, it is necessary to show the people that the LDP is changing and the party is a new LDP,” Kishida told reporters in Tokyo.

“For this, transparent and open elections and free and vigorous debate are important. The most obvious first step to show that the LDP will change is for me to step aside,” he said.

Kishida, 67, in office since October 2021, has seen his and his party’s poll ratings slide sharply in response to rising prices hitting Japanese incomes and several scandals.

In November, Kishida announced a stimulus package worth 17 trillion yen (more than $100 billion at the time) as he tried to ease the pressure from inflation and rescue his premiership.

But this failed to make him any less unpopular, both among voters in the world’s fourth-largest economy and within his own party.

Along with inflation – for Japanese voters an unfamiliar and unwelcome phenomenon – growth has spluttered, shrinking 0.7 percent in the first quarter.

Despite some recovery in recent weeks, the yen has been one of the world’s worst-performing currencies, making life easier for exporters but pushing up import prices.

Kishida could in theory have governed until 2025, and there had been speculation he might call a snap election to shore up his position.

But NHK reported that growing voices inside the LDP believed it would fare badly in elections under Kishida. In April, the party lost three by-elections.

Kishida, who last year escaped a pipe-bomb attack unscathed, has also faced severe criticism over a major kickbacks scandal linked to fundraising parties.

Kishida decided to jump because he knew he would lose the leadership battle, said Koichi Nakano, political science professor at Sophia University.

Kishida has sided decisively with Ukraine since Russia’s invasion, welcoming President Volodymyr Zelensky to a G7 summit in Hiroshima and visiting Kyiv.

Under Kishida, Japan also pledged to double its defence spending to the NATO standard of two percent of GDP by 2027.

Encouraged by the United States as the two countries seek to confront an increasingly assertive China, this marked a major change for Japan from decades of strict pacifism.

US President Joe Biden hosted Kishida at the White House in April when the two countries announced a “new era” in cooperation.

Japan and the Philippines in July signed a defence pact allowing for the deployment of troops on each other’s territory.

On climate, Kishida promised at COP 28 in December that Japan would build no new coal power stations that were “unabated”, or lacked measures to reduce emissions.

Critics said that the necessary technologies, such as “co-firing” coal with ammonia or capturing and storing emissions, were unproven on a large scale.

Meth found in sweets handed out by New Zealand charity

Pineapple sweets dished out by a New Zealand charity have tested positive for potentially lethal amounts of methamphetamine, police said Wednesday, sparking an urgent race to remove them from the streets.

A child, a teenager and a charity worker have already been taken to hospital after they tasted the candies.

Although none are seriously ill, police have launched a criminal investigation and are now trying to track down up to 400 other people who may have received the sweets.

“We need to round these up as quickly as we can,” said Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin, adding that 16 of the sweets had been found so far.

Police suggested the drugs might have been packaged under the “Rinda” brand by traffickers or dealers to evade detection.

They are then believed to have been donated to anti-poverty charity the Auckland City Mission, which inadvertently distributed them via a food bank.

“Drug importation is complex, and organised criminal groups use a range of measures and techniques to try and evade enforcement agencies, not only in New Zealand, but around the world,” Baldwin said.

A child and a teenager were taken to hospital after tasting the sweets and spitting them out. Both are okay, Baldwin added.

A charity worker was also treated for symptoms consistent with methamphetamine, but later discharged.

The New Zealand Drug Foundation said a test sample of an innocuous-looking piece of white candy in a bright yellow wrapper indicated it contained methamphetamine.

Foundation spokeswoman Sarah Helm said the tested sweet contained approximately three grams of meth – hundreds of times greater than the common dose taken by users.

“Swallowing that much methamphetamine is extremely dangerous and could result in death.”

Helm urged people who had received confectionaries from the Auckland charity not to consume them.

“We don’t know how widespread it is.”

A three-day burial plan for the designer of the Nigerian national flag, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, will commence on Wednesday, September 4 and end, on Friday, September 6, 2024, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

A statement by his son, Akinwumi Akinkunmi, on behalf of the family, on Monday in Ibadan, requested that the nation flag be flown at half mast in honour of the deceased during the burial.

NJC to select Ariwoola’s successor Friday

The National Judicial Council is set to meet on Friday, August 16, to decide on the successor of the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

Ariwoola is billed to bow out on August 22, when he will attain the mandatory retirement age of 70.

An impeccable source at the Supreme Court told our correspondent on Tuesday that the NJC had fixed a meeting for Friday to deliberate on who becomes the next CJN.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the press, noted that whatever name(s) was decided on at the NJC meeting would be forwarded to President Bola Tinubu for consideration.

The source said, “The NJC has fixed Friday to meet to take a decision on the name to be forwarded to the President on who the next CJN would be. No name has been sent to the President yet as the NJC has not even met.”

The Supreme Court currently has the full complement of 21 Justices.

In the long tradition of the apex court, the next most senior Justice will likely step in.

By their hierarchies, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun is the most senior Justice on the apex court bench and is the likeliest successor.

Justice Ariwoola will exit his position as CJN on August 22, 2024, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70.

The Supreme Court has fixed the same date for a valedictory session to honour him for his service to the country.

Justice Ariwoola, from Oyo State, became the CJN on October 12, 2022, succeeding Justice Tanko Mohammed from Bauchi State.

Going by Section 231 (4) of the 1999 Constitution, Justice Ariwoola’s exit will lead to the emergence of a new CJN. The most senior justice of the Supreme Court will succeed him.

This translates to the baton automatically going to Justice Kekere-Ekun, who is the next most senior Justice on the apex court bench.

Previously, a source at the Supreme Court had confirmed to The PUNCH that Justice Kekere-Edun’s emergence as the next CJN “is very certain”.

“This one is very certain. You know normally they will send three names but it is always the most senior and even the most senior is already warming up to take over,” the source said.

When confirmed as the next CJN, Justice Kekere-Ekun will become Nigeria’s second female CJN after Justice Aloma Mukhtar, who served between July 2012 and November 2014.

If confirmed as the next CJN, 66-year-old Justice Kekere-Ekun will steer the judiciary for four years till 2028 when she will clock the mandatory retirement age of 70.

A life bencher, Justice Kekere-Ekun started her career in private practice from 1985 to 1989 after which she was appointed as a Senior Magistrate Grade II, Lagos State Judiciary in December 1989.

She was appointed a judge of the High Court of Lagos State on July 19, 1996. She served as Chairman Robbery and Firearms Tribunal, Zone II, Ikeja, Lagos from November 1996 to May 1999.

She was elevated to the Court of Appeal on September 22, 2004, where she served in various divisions of the court and as presiding justice of two divisions of the court (Makurdi & Aku) in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

She was elevated to the Supreme Court of Nigeria as the fifth female Justice of the court and was sworn in on Monday, July 8, 2023.
