Israel drone intercepts drone near Sea of Galilee

Israeli air defence said it had intercepted a drone east of the Sea of Galilee on Monday.

The army had announced that there had been an air alarm in the area beforehand.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.

Initially, it was unclear where the drone had been launched from, but it was assumed that it either came from Syria or flew through Syria.

The Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah militia has also repeatedly attacked Israel with drones since the beginning of the Gaza war almost 11 months ago.

In addition, Iran and other allies in the region have also carried out drone attacks on Israel.

Gunmen kill 22 on Pakistan highway

Gunmen shot and killed at least 22 people in southwest Pakistan on Monday, after forcing them out of vehicles and checking their ethnicity, government officials said, in an attack claimed by separatists.

The attack was carried out by dozens of militants early Monday in the district of Musakhail in the impoverished Balochistan province, where security forces are battling sectarian, ethnic, and separatist violence.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), the most active militant separatist group in the region, claimed responsibility for the shootings in a statement emailed to AFP.

The buses, vans, and trucks were stopped one after the other on a highway connecting Punjab with Balochistan, Najibullah Kakar, a senior official in Musakhail, told AFP.

“The numbers of the militants were between 30 to 40. They stopped 22 vehicles,” he said.

“Vehicles traveling to and from Punjab were inspected, and individuals from Punjab were identified and shot,” he added.

He said 22 people were killed, mostly Punjabi labourers as well as two paramilitary soldiers.

Hameed Zehri, another senior official in the district, confirmed the death toll to AFP.

The BLA claimed that those killed were military servicemen in civilian clothes who were “identified and subsequently killed by BLA fighters”, but did not provide any evidence.

Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest but poorest province, despite an abundance of untapped natural resources.

Baloch separatists have in recent years intensified attacks on Punjabis and Sinhdis from elsewhere in Pakistan working in the region, as well as foreign energy firms they believe are exploiting the region without sharing its riches.

Punjabis are the largest of the six main ethnic groups in Pakistan and are perceived to dominate the ranks of the military locked in a battle to quash Balochistan’s armed factions.

In a similar attack on April, 11 Punjabi labourers were killed when they were abducted from a bus in the Naushki City of Balochistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed “deep grief and condemnation over the terrorist attack” in a statement issued Monday by his office.

An AFP photographer also saw black smoke rising over Kyiv.

Authorities in at least six regions of the country said blasts had been heard in their territories.

The governor of the central Dnipropetrovsk region, Sergiy Lysak, said Russian forces had attacked “en masse.”

“There is one dead, a 69-year-old man,” the governor wrote on social media.

In the Zaporizhzhia region, the attack killed one civilian, the governor Ivan Fedorov said, without elaborating.

In the western city of Lutsk, Russian bombardment damaged an apartment building and an infrastructure facility, the mayor, Igor Polishchuk, said.

He added that one person had been killed.

The attack also targeted energy facilities in the Lviv region in the west of the country, the governor said.

In the wider region of Kyiv, authorities said Russia used drones and missiles to attack energy infrastructure and one person was wounded.

“As a result, there are partial power outages in (the city of) Lviv and the region,” governor Maksym Kozytskyi said on social media.

Earlier, an attack on an industrial facility in the eastern region of Poltava wounded five people, governor Filip Pronin said.

Since invading in February 2022, Russia has launched dozens of large-scale drone and missile attacks on Ukraine.

Most recently, those strikes have targeted energy facilities causing millions of dollars worth of damage and disrupting the lives of millions of Ukrainians.

French authorities have extended the detention of Telegram’s CEO and founder, Pavel Durov, following his arrest at Le Bourget airport, near Paris on Saturday evening.

The Russian-born tech mogul was apprehended under a warrant related to alleged offences connected to the widely used but controversial messaging app, Telegram.

Durov, 39, was initially detained after arriving in Paris from Baku, Azerbaijan, with plans to dine in the French capital.

He was accompanied by a bodyguard and a personal assistant at the time of his arrest.

According to sources close to the investigation, Durov’s detention has been extended beyond Sunday night by the investigating magistrate handling the case.

Under French law, this initial period of detention for questioning can last up to 96 hours, after which the judge may either release Durov or press charges and remand him in further custody.

The arrest is the latest development in Durov’s high-profile career, marked by his creation of one of the world’s most influential messaging platforms.

France’s OFMIN, an office dedicated to preventing violence against minors, issued the arrest warrant as part of a preliminary investigation into alleged offences, including fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organized crime, and the promotion of terrorism.

Durov is accused of failing to take sufficient action to curb the criminal use of Telegram.

In response to the arrest, Russia has accused France of “refusing to cooperate,” while fellow tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has come to Durov’s defense.

Durov, who holds a French passport along with other nationalities, has maintained his innocence.

A spokesperson for Telegram stated, “Durov has nothing to hide and travels frequently in Europe.

He said that Telegram abides by EU laws, “including the Digital Services Act — its moderation is within industry standards. It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform.”
