No to covid-19 vaccine- Tanzania government

Tanzania’s government, which has been criticised for its handling of the pandemic, has no plans to rollout Covid vaccines, the health minister says.

The comments come days after President John Magufuli warned officials against acquiring vaccines saying they could harm people, without giving evidence.

Critics have accused him of playing down the threat posed by the virus.

Millions of people have already been inoculated in many countries after the vaccines were given emergency approval.

Vaccines are rigorously tested in trials involving thousands of people before being assessed by health regulators. They look at all the data on the safety and effectiveness of vaccines before approving them for use on a wider population.

Last month, the World Health Organization (WHO) urged Tanzania to consider inoculating its population.

Tanzania is one of the few countries in the world to not publish any data on Covid-19 cases. It last did so in May, when about 500 cases and 20 deaths were recorded. The following month, Mr Magufuli declared Tanzania “coronavirus-free”.

Last month, the president said some Tanzanians had travelled abroad to take the vaccine but “ended up bringing us a strange coronavirus”. The comments were seen as an apparent admission that the virus may be circulating in the country.

At a news conference on Monday, Health Minister Dorothy Gwajima said: “For now the government has no plans to receive the Covid vaccine being distributed in other countries.”

The minister urged Tanzanians to take precautions and to use traditional medicine as a way of dealing with coronavirus, although their efficacy to combat the virus has not been scientifically confirmed

Two FBI agents killed in a gunfight

Two FBI agents have been killed and three others have been wounded during a shootout in Florida while serving an arrest warrant, according to the FBI.

The gunfire began around 06:00 local time (11:00GMT) in the city of Sunrise as agents were investigating a child abuse case, US officials say.

The suspect has also been killed. Asked how many bullets were fired, a police official replied: “Too many to count.”

The gunfight took place at an upscale gated community north of Miami.

“A team of law enforcement officers were there to execute a federal court-ordered search warrant in furtherance of a violent crimes against children case,” a statement from the FBI said.

The statement added that two of the agents had been transported to hospital and were in a stable condition. The deceased agents have not yet been named.

Biden threatens to re-impose sanctions on Myanmar after apparent military coup

The newly elected President of the United States of America, Joe Biden has threatened to re-impose tough sanctions on Myanmar after its leader Aung San Suu Kyi, 75, President Win Myint and some other members of the National League of Democracy were arrested by security forces in an apparent coup.

Biden who condemned the military’s takeover from the civilian-led government on Monday, called for a concerted international response to push the generals into relinquishing power.

He also described the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi and some other party members as “a direct assault on the country’s transition to democracy and the disrespect of the rule of law”.

“The international community should come together in one voice to press the Burmese military to immediately relinquish the power they have seized, release the activists and officials they have detained,” Biden said in a statement.

“The United States removed sanctions on Burma over the past decade based on progress toward democracy. The reversal of that progress will necessitate an immediate review of our sanction laws and authorities, followed by appropriate action,” he said.

Biden warned the US was “taking note of those who stand with the people of Burma in this difficult hour.”

Speaking from detention yesterday Aung San Suu Kyi said that the military was trying to re-impose dictatorship.

“I urge people not to accept this, to respond and wholeheartedly to protest against the coup by the military,” a statement released in her name said.

Bushfire in Australia!!!

A bushfire raging outside the Western Australian city of Perth has forced nearby residents to evacuate, as the city remains in a coronavirus lockdown.

The blaze, whipped up by strong winds, had doubled in size overnight to a 75km (46 miles) fire-front said officials. At least 30 homes are believed lost.

People have been told to flee to safety even if it means breaking lockdown.

Western Australian (WA) Premier said the state was facing an “extremely concerning and serious” situation.

“Right now WA is battling two different kinds of emergencies – a dangerous fire emergency and a Covid-19 lockdown emergency,” said Mark McGowan.

However he urged the majority of the state capital’s residents – not in harm’s way of the fire – to remain in their homes to reduce the risk of the virus spreading.

By global standards, it is a very low risk as the city has reported just one local case. But the city of two million people entered a snap five-day lockdown on Sunday after that case – the first local infection in Western Australia in 10 months – was found.

“It is going to be an extremely challenging day for everyone involved. Please do everything you can to keep you and your family safe and look after each other,” Mr McGowan said.

The Wooroloo fire, first reported at Monday midday, has grown into a fast-moving, erratic blaze which overnight raced through the hills and valleys fringing the city’s north-west.

Perth residents woke up on Tuesday to a blanket of smoke across the city. People reported ash falling from the sky in locations 50km away from the fire-front.

image captionThe blaze has burnt 7,000 hectares and sent smoke across Perth

Fire authorities told people living in the north-west semi-rural suburbs – including Ellenbrook, Averley and Brigadoon – that they were in “immediate danger” and needed to evacuate or enact their bushfire survival plans.

Those in areas further afield have been told “the best option is to leave early and to leave now”.

About 250 firefighters – who are wearing masks and socially distancing – are battling the blaze but struggling in the hot and windy conditions, said Western Australia deputy fire commissioner Craig Waters.

Perth is enduring 35C (95F) temperatures and has experienced a run of hot days as well as extended dry conditions.

Mr Waters said historically, the area had not seen such large fires but “in the last few years, we have seen increased fire behaviour with rapid escalation overnight”.

“The changing climate… and moisture deficit in the soil is impacting how the fire behaves,” he said.

He said back-up had been requested from the fire services of eastern Australian states – where bushfires are traditionally more common.

Twitter restores blocked account

Twitter has restored dozens of Indian accounts that were earlier blocked in response to a legal notice by the government, citing objections based on public order.

The accounts were all linked to continuing farmers’ protests against a series of agricultural reform laws.

They included farmers’ leaders, activists and a news magazine.

The protests are now in their third month, with many farmers camped on the outskirts of the capital, Delhi.

Reports say government officials highlighted in their submission to Twitter about 250 accounts and tweets which they said constituted a threat to public security.

Two popular accounts associated with the protest, Kisan Ekta Morcha and Tractor2Twitr, were withheld.

Twitter also blocked the accounts of Caravan, a news magazine, activist Hansraj Meena, actor Sushant Singh and other lawmakers

INDIA LAUNCHES ONLINE MEMORIAL FOR PANDEMIC VICTIMS

An online memorial to commemorate Indians who have lost their lives to Covid-19 has been launched by a group of doctors and social workers.

The virtual memorial will allow family members and friends of the victims to pay their tributes.

India has reported more than 154,000 Covid-19 deaths, but infections have dropped sharply in recent months.

Social workers helped by doctors, health workers and journalists will help run the memorial.

The memorial – nationalcovidmemorial.in – was launched at the weekend by the Covid Care Network, a non-governmental organisation led by a team of doctors in the eastern city of Kolkata.

Tributes are already being posted on the site – families need to upload the death certificates of their loved ones or provide their phone number for verification.

“A national Covid memorial is an initiative for Indians to keep alive the memories of their loved ones who succumbed to the disease. This is a place where everybody can join,” Dr Abhijit Chowdhury of the Network said.

“This memorial will restore some dignity of the people who died and were cremated without even their families being allowed to attend the funeral”.

During the pandemic, family members of the victims were mostly not allowed to attend the funerals. Such was the stigma and fear over the infection that a crowd in south India in August violently prevented the burial of a prominent doctor who died of the disease.

N Ram, director of The Hindu Group of Publications, said volunteers, NGOs and journalists would be needed to help gather tributes of “the poor and the destitute” who lost their lives to the virus.

“The memorial has to be inclusive. We should not be missing anyone,” Mr Ram said.

V Mohan, a physician who is advising the memorial’s founders, said India didn’t have a tradition of commemorating the dead.

“We don’t have a tradition of memorials. We don’t remember the dead,” he said. “The tragedy and emotional trauma Covid caused will stay with the affected families for decades. This is one place people can visit and relive memories. This should become a national movement.”

Buhari Mourns As Nigeria Loses Minister.

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed grief at the passing of his longtime ally, friend, political loyalist and former Minister of Information and Culture, Prince Tony Momoh.

Reacting to the passage, in a statement by his spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Monday, Buhari said: Momoh stood with him through thick and thin.

“His brand of loyalty is very rare in the politics of today. I will greatly miss him,” he added.

The president recalled that as chairman, Media and Publicity of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) Campaign Organisation in the 2003 and 2007 elections, Momoh ”contributed in no small measure to the growth and strengthening of the organisations.”

Late Momoh was also onetime Chairman of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). He noted that Momoh’s contributions led to the eventual formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Police begins enforcement of #COVID-19 law, targets religious centers, schools, taxis, others.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered full enforcement of the COVID-19 Health Protection Regulations. The executive order was signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on January 26.

Adamu ordered Assistant Inspectors General of Police in the 17 zonal commands, Commissioners of Police in 36 and the Federal Capital Territory to comply by ensuring immediate implementation.

Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba made the announcement in a statement on Monday.

Adamu said the regulation gives the Nigeria Police and other agencies of government the powers to implement and prosecute defaulters.

Police officers will target public places, religious centers, offices, schools, event centres, bars, clubs, malls banks, public transport vehicles, among others. They are to enforce restrictions on gatherings and the use of face masks.

Adamu advised the public to voluntarily comply with the provisions of the law for general safety. The IGP, however, cautioned officers to be firm, professional, civil and respect citizens while enforcing the order.

Lawyer Caught Having Sex During Trial On Zoom.

A popular lawyer in Peru is currently under fire after he was caught having sex on Zoom network during a live court trial.

In the video currently circulating, Hector Paredes, was caught stark-naked with a brunette as he forgot to turn off his camera during a hearing organised by a court in Pichanaki in the central Peruvian region of Junin on Tuesday, January 26.

Court officials and other lawyers looked on in shock as Paredes, who was supposed to defend members of a criminal organisation ‘Los Z de Chanchamayo’, aired an x-rated scene during a session which was being watched and recorded on a public live feed.

Although the brunette is yet to be identified, reports suggest that the lady is one of Paredes’ clients and could be identified soon.

Further reporters revealed that Paredes was barred from any more involvement in the ongoing land trafficking, fraud and extortion case.

Paredes was also told he would face two separate probes, one by state prosecutors and another by his local bar association.

WE’LL FLUSH HERDSMEN OUT OF YORUBALAND- SUNDAY IGBOHO

The Yoruba self-acclaimed activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, on Monday stormed troubled areas in Yewaland, Ogun State, insisting that killer – herdsmen must vacate Yorubaland.

Daily Trust reports that Igboho had recently visited Fulani settlement in Igangan, Oyo State, where he ‘displaced’ the Seriki Fulani, Saliu Abdulkadir and his household, a development which had attracted hues and cries nationwide.

Igboho alongside his supporters had stormed Abeokuta, the state capital, in continuation of his campaign against the suspected killer-herdsmen in the Southwest.

The self-acclaimed activist who stopped briefly in the state capital headed to some trouble areas in Yewaland in Ogun West Senatorial district.

Igboho also visited some other troubled areas including Eggua, Asa  and Eseluland following their plights in the hands of herdsmen.

While addressing his followers in Abeokuta, he insisted that killer – herdsmen must be flushed out of Yorubaland.

“I observe there is an injustice from the herdsmen because they know the power that be in the federal government. They behave like Yoruba are nobody. They killed our people, they kidnapped our people, they raped our women.

“Any Fulani herdsman who engages in kidnapping would  be flushed out .”

When asked whether he would limit his activism to Igangan,  Igboho said , “Not only Igangan, we are going to visit all  Yoruba land and ensure  there is peace everywhere .”

He however lauded the State Governor, Dapo Abiodun for ‘allowing’ him in the state.

He said “The reasons for our visit to Ogun state is to flush out the killers herdsmen. We have not visited the governor, we will do that after we have flushed the  Fulani herdsmen out of the state.

“Let us thank God and the governor of the state, he said himself that he wants us to come and send the killer herdsmen out. His action shows that he loves the people of Ogun state,  if he does not love the people of Ogun state he would not have allowed us to come to the state .”

‘I didn’t invite him’

Meanwhile, Governor Dapo Abiodun has denied seeking Igboho’s help in the fight against insecurity in the state.

Abiodun in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Waheed Odusile said he didn’t enlist Igboho to combat crime in the state.

The governor was silent on the Igboho’s Monday visit, but denied earlier report credited to the Special Adviser on Public Communication, Remmy Hazzan, on welcoming the Yoruba activist to the state.

“At all times, the Government will ensure that all security agencies and indeed all stakeholders operate within the ambit of the law and will neither welcome nor endorse any initiative that amounts to self-help or is outside the contemplation of the constitution, which is the grundnorm binding on all governments and persons in the country,” the governor said.

He added that the government would continue to attract and welcome all those with legitimate reasons to live, work and even play in the State, saying that “it is home to all Nigerians and foreigners alike.”

He, however, advised the residents to continue to go about their normal businesses

44year old actor dies of cancer

Saved by the Bell actor Dustin Diamond has died from cancer, his representative has said.

The 44-year-old was best known for playing Samuel “Screech” Powers in the popular 1990s US sitcom about a group of high school friends and their headmaster.

He had recently completed a first round of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with lung cancer last month.

His condition had deteriorated fast in the last week, said agent Roger Paul.

“Dustin did not suffer. He did not have to lie submerged in pain. For that, we are grateful,” he said on Monday.

Saved by the Bell ran for four seasons from 1989 to 1993 and was a global hit series.

Co-stars have been paying tribute.

Mario Lopez, known to fans of the show as AC Slater, said: “Dustin, you will be missed my man. The fragility of this life is something never to be taken for granted. Prayers for your family will continue on.”

Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played Zack Morris, tweeted that Diamond was “a true comedic genius” and said he “will miss those raw, brilliant sparks that only he was able to produce”.

Diamond reprised his role in follow-up series Saved by the Bell: The New Class, and Saved by the Bell: The College Years. But he did not appear in the recent revival series.

The American was also a contestant on Celebrity Big Brother in 2013.

Diamond served three months in jail after he stabbed a man during an altercation at a bar in Wisconsin in 2014.

Senator Shehu Sani Condemns Kanu’s ESN Attack On Herdsmen In Isiukwuato Village, Abia State.

Recall that there was a video Nnamdi Kanu shared on his Facebook wall where the officers of the Eastern Security Network were seen chasing away the Fulani Herdsmen in Isiukwuato village in Abia state. The video revealed the members of the ESN brutally slaughtering the cows of the herders without mercy.

Senator Shehu Sani who was the former senatorial representative of Kaduna central senatorial zone, while reacting to the video said, “It is painful to see how the members of the Kanu’s Eastern Security Network brutally slaughtered the cows of herders in Isiukwuato areas of Abia state. The ugly incidence is such that should not be allowed to happen again by the Federal Government”.

“The Federal Government should set up plans on allowing the herdsmen to set up and establish their grazing ranches in the North, rather than leaving them at the mercies of such brutal attack with their cows. To maintain peace, unity and order in this country, the president should allow the herders to settle in the North”.

Nigerians on seeing the response of Senator Sank to the incidence provided photos of where people’s businesses where destroyed without compensation in Kano and asked the Senator what he had to say concerning that one.

Major Nor’easter affecting Northeast with possible historic snow in NYC.

The National Weather Service warned that travel conditions will be “difficult to impossible” across the region.

Millions across the Northeast are waking up Monday to the year’s first major winter storm with up to 2 feet of snow projected and blizzard-like conditions expected across the region.

The National Weather Service warned that widespread heavy snow of 1 to 2 feet is forecast from Pennsylvania into New England including Philadelphia, New York City and Boston through Tuesday, with snowfall rates reaching up to three inches an hour and wind gusts peaking as high as 60 mph.

As of Monday morning, the nor’easter has pelted Chicago with about 11 inches of snow; Washington, D.C., with 2.3 inches; Philadelphia with 3.4 inches; and New York City with 3.5 inches.A vast number of flights have been cancelled at major airports, including 91 percent of flights at LaGuardia Airport; 72 percent at Newark Liberty International Airport; and 71 percent at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Many Covid-19 vaccination appointments were cancelled and rescheduled in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York City.

NBC News meteorologist Bill Karins said the tristate area could see its biggest snowstorm in five years, while New York City could get between 12 and 18 inches of snow, with up to 20 inches possible if one of the heavy snow bands sits over the city Monday afternoon.

Karins said the National Weather Service’s New York office forecast has called for 21 inches in Central Park, which would tie it for the fourth largest snowstorm in New York City’s history.

So just to be clear, the new forecast for NYC of 21″ would equal the snow that fell in the Blizzard of 1888 and tie the 4th largest snowfall in NYC history! pic.twitter.com/FddGvzAxKU

Periods of light snow will continue on and off through early Tuesday, he added.

The National Weather Service warned that travel conditions will be “difficult to impossible” across the northeast.

The Maryland State Patrol said Monday morning they answered almost 900 calls and responded to 330 crashes and about 150 disabled or unattended vehicles on Sunday.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said during a Sunday news conference that schools would be closed on Monday and that officials are rescheduling appointments for coronavirusvaccinations.

“The last thing we want to do is urge our seniors to come out in the middle of a storm like this,” de Blasio said, warning residents not to underestimate weather conditions.

The mayor also tweeted that nonessential travel will be restricted in New York City starting at 6 a.m. Monday as part of a local state of emergency.

“This winter storm will be dangerous with heavy snowfall and strong winds,” de Blasio said. “If you can stay home, stay home.”

Among other states that closed major coronavirus vaccination sites are Rhode Island, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The John F. Kennedy Airport and the Newark Liberty International Airport have canceled a total of more than 300 flights, or about 75 percent. LaGuardia Airport topped the list with 90 percent of its flights canceled on Monday.

The storm had already blanketed parts of the Midwest in the most snow some places had seen in several years. Chicago got almost 11 inches of snow by Monday morning. In Wisconsin, snow depths in some counties near Lake Michigan had reached more than 15 inches.
Snow also hit the Washington metropolitan area, with over two inches reported in several areas, but another round of snow is possible Monday morning. The city’s inclement weather prompted President Joe Biden to postpone a visit to the State Department that had been planned for Monday, a White House official told NBC News.

While people in affected areas were advised to remain indoors and avoid traveling, the giant pandas at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., took full advantage of the winter wonderland and were captured on camera rollicking around in the snow.

Al-Shabab claims responsibility for Somalia hotel attack which claimed nine lives

Feared militant group, Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack launched at the Afrik Hotel, in Somalia which began with a car bomb on Sunday afternoon and killed nine people in the process.

Reports say a car hit the hotel’s front entrance in the capital of Mogadishu and detonated before gunmen stormed the building, according to officials and others at the scene of the incident.

“The blast made the hotel tremble as we sat inside and were talking. We were panicked, confused,” eyewitness Ahmed Nur was quoted by Reuters as saying.

“The operation is over now. Nine people, including four attackers, died and over 10 civilians were injured. There is no electricity,” a police spokesman told reporters from the scene and via Facebook.

The incident came two months after a deadly bomb blast in the capital of Mogadishu claimed the lives of no fewer than seven victims and left 10 others seriously injured.

The incident was confirmed by BBC’s Bella Sheegow who said that the explosion happened in a popular ice-cream parlour and bakery near the airport.

Niger Republic sets date for second round of voting in presidential election

A second round of voting in the inconclusive presidential elections in Niger Republic has been fixed for February 21, after the first round of voting on December 27, 2020, could not  produce a clear winner.

In a statement on Sunday,Niger’s Constitutional Court (NCC), confirmed that a second round of the presidential election is to be held as no candidate had obtained an absolute majority of votes in the first round which “led to the annulment, partial or total cancellation claimed by opposition candidates” which was rejected by the Court.

However, the rerun elections will be between former Prime Minister and candidate of the ruling party who was the favorite to win, Mohammed Bazoum and former President Mahamane Ousmane.

In the first election, Bazoum came first with 39.33 percent of the votes while Mahamane came second with 16.99 percent of votes.

“The Court receives the request of the President of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the form, validates and proclaims the final results of the first round of the presidential elections of December 27 2020.

“The court, therefore, declares Mohamed Bazoum and Mahamane Ousmane candidates in the second round of the presidential elections,” the NCC said.

For the second round, Bazoum and Ousmane will have to engage in negotiations with the 28 other candidates who did not make the cut.

Eighteen opposition parties including that of Ousmane, gathered in the coalition Cap 20-21, called the ‘failed candidates’ in the first round to join the candidacy of the former president.Ten other unsuccessful candidates in the first round including former President Salou Djibo have formed a second alliance, the Alliance of Candidates for Change (ACC), offering their support in the second round “to any interested candidate,” in return for power-sharing afterwards.

STILL ON IGP ADAMU’S RETIREMENT

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to name a new Inspector-General of Police as the incumbent police chief, Mohammed Adamu, is due to take a bow out of service on Monday, multiple sources told Daily Trust on Sunday.

As the president’s action is being awaited, prominent socio-cultural groups and civil society organisations have called on the president to do the right thing and stick to the rule of law in taking his decision.

While the IGP’s days in the police are officially up, on account of attaining 35 years in service, the president has the prerogative to extend his stay.

But informed sources told our reporters last night that the president is unlikely to give Adamu the fiat to stay beyond his statutory service age.

A top source at the Presidency treveals that Adamu is expected to hand over to the most senior police officer, in the event no announcement was made before the end of Monday.

“This is a post that has limit. If a position like that is given to you, the expectation is one leaves at the due date except if there is an instruction to the contrary. Right now there is no such communication,” he said.

Multiple sources told one of our reporters that Adamu’s fate was sealed on Wednesday after the president was briefed on the vacancy in the police top post by Minister of Police Affairs Maigari Dingyadi, at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

It has been gathered that the minister presented a shortlist of Deputy Inspector-Generals (DGIs) and Assistant Inspector-Generals (AIGs) to the president for his consideration.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Police Affairs, Ehisienmen Osaigvo, did not respond to a request for comments on this story last night. Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, declined comment when contacted by our reporter.

But a credible security source explained that the presidency had directed the Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Department of States Security (DSS) to prepare confidential briefings on seven senior police officers on the rank of DIG and AIG.

Course mates of IGP Adamu, serving in various positions in the Police Force, had reportedly vacated their offices as of Sunday night.

Sources in Abuja and other places said the IGP’s mates, including a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), DIG Ibrahim Lamorde, DIG Michael Anthony Ogbizi, and AIG Mohammad Mustafa, have emptied their offices in preparation for quitting the Force on Monday.

Despite these developments, Adamu is said to be still staying foot in his post with some of his promoters calling for a six month extension for him.

Checks Sunday night indicated that Adamu was still occupying the IGP’s official residence in Maitama, Abuja, while he was yet to vacate his office.

A source at the Ministry of Police Affairs told one of our reporters that the presidency would announce a new acting inspector general of police on Monday.

“Everything is concluded, you should just wait for the appointment from the Villa,” the source who asked not to be named for fear of sanctions explained.

BIOCRITICAL INFORMATION ON IGP ADAMU

He was appointed by PresidentMuhammadu Buhari on 15 January 2019 replacing Ibrahim Kpotun Idris (rtd) of Niger State. Mohammed Adamu hails from Lafia, in Nasarawa State.

Gun battle in Somalia

A gun battle between militant Islamists and Somali security forces at a hotel in the capital, Mogadishu, is now over.

At least five people were killed in the attack at the Afrik Hotel, which began with a car bomb on Sunday.

Al-Shabab said it was responsible. The group, which is linked to al-Qaeda, regularly carries out attacks against the government.

At least four attackers also died – according to AFP news agency three were shot and one blew himself up.

A car hit the hotel’s front entrance and detonated before gunmen stormed the building, according to officials and others at the scene.

Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble said in a statement that among those killed was a former military general, Mohamed Nur Galal.

image captionAmbulances have been pictured near the scene of the bomb attack

The militants targeted the Afrik Hotel despite the fact that it is in a heavily guarded area near the city’s main airport, the BBC’s Bella Sheegow reported from Mogadishu.

The hotel is known to be a gathering place for Somali government officials. A local police captain said a number of lawmakers and senior military officials were inside at the time of the attack.

Footage on social media showed large plumes of smoke rising across the city earlier on Sunday.

Our reporter says it was one of the most devastating recent attacks in Mogadishu. Al-Shabab also targeted the beachside Elite hotel last year resulting in a seven-hour battle with police and security in which 17 people were killed.

The violent siege comes just weeks after former US President Donald Trump ordered the withdrawal of some 700 troops who had been supporting local security forces against militant groups, including al-Shabab.

There are fears the withdrawal could lead to further instability in the country, which is due to hold elections next month.

Meghan Markle claims Buckingham Palace made her remove her name on son , Archie’s birth certificate.

Meghan Markle has claimed Buckingham Palace made her erase her first names from her and Prince Harry’s son Archie Harrison’s birth certificate.

The Sun reported on Saturday, January 30, that the former American actress, 39, “secretly erased” her first names, Rachel Meghan, from the document in June 2019, nearly one month after Archie’s birth.

She was then referred to as “Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex.” Prince Harry‘s name was also amended to add the word prince, so it reads, “His Royal Highness Prince Henry Charles Albert David, Duke of Sussex.”

The adjustment reportedly occurred on June 5 after Harry and Meghan’s son arrived on May 6 of 2019.
A spokesperson for Meghan has now confirmed the change of name but says Meghan did not request her name should be changed on her son’s birth certificate.

The spokesman told the Telegraph: ‘The change of name on public documents in 2019 was dictated by The Palace, as confirmed by documents from senior Palace officials. This was not requested by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex nor by The Duke of Sussex.

‘To see this UK tabloid and their carnival of so-called ‘experts’ chose to deceptively whip this into a calculated family ‘snub’ and suggest that she would oddly want to be nameless on her child’s birth certificate, or any other legal document, would be laughable were it not offensive.’

The change triggered speculation, with the Queen’s ex-press secretary Dickie Arbiter saying: ‘Maybe this was an early part of their plan.’
Lady Colin Campbell, who spotted the amendment, said: ‘It is extraordinary and raises all kinds of questions about what the Sussexes were thinking.’

Meghan and Harry, 36, tied the knot in May 2018 and welcomed Archie one year later. Months after the name change the couple announced their decision to quit the royal family in January 2020 and completed their duties that March.

UAE To Offer Citizenship To Selected Foreigners.

Foreign residents make up more than 80% of the UAE’s population and have for decades been a mainstay of its economy.

The United Arab Emirates plans to offer citizenship to selected people, the first Gulf nation to do so in a major policy shift designed to give expatriates a bigger stake in the economy and foster growth, Bloomberg reports.

“We adopted law amendments that allow granting the UAE citizenship to investors, specialised talents and professionals including scientists, doctors, engineers, artists, authors and their families. The new directives aim to attract talents that contribute to our development journey,” Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum said in a tweet.

“The UAE cabinet, local Emiri courts and executive councils will nominate those eligible for citizenship under clear criteria set for each category. The law allows receivers of the UAE passport to keep their existing citizenship.”

Foreign residents make up more than 80% of the UAE’s population and have for decades been a mainstay of its economy. The UAE comprises seven sheikhdoms, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Oil-rich Gulf states, which for decades jealously guarded privileges for the small number of citizens, have been forced to consider longer residency and limited citizenship for foreigners as they seek to attract investment and diversify from oil.

Last year, the UAE abolished the need for companies to have Emirati shareholders, in a major shake-up of foreign ownership laws to attract investment into an economy reeling from the coronavirus and a decline in oil prices.
