Mugabe’s bitter spirit killing, punishing his tribesmen —Family

As dramatic as it sounds, the family of the former Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe has said his bitter spirit is fighting from the grave following the report of the death of a Chief and that those who allegedly pushed for the exhumation and reburial of Mugabe’s body are not feeling well.

It would be recalled Mugabe died in September 2019 and his remains were buried at his rural home in Kutama, Zvimba, after his family indicated that he wished to be laid to rest there.

However, this led to a face-off with a group of Chiefs who questioned the decision.

Chief of Zvimba, Alfred Tome also known as Chief Beperere had ordered Grace, Mugabe’s widow, to ensure that the former Statesman’s remains were exhumed and reburied in Harare.

However, Chief Beperere got infected with COVID-19 while in the process of preparing to exhume the remains of Mugabe and was buried at his farm in Raffingora.

Following his death, Mugabe’s family celebrated as Chief Beperere had insisted on the exhumation of the former ruler and that he be reburied at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.

According to Mugabe’s family member, Dominic Matibiri, the Mugabe ancestral spirits were angered by calls for the exhumation of his body from the family homestead in Zvimba communal lands.

Matibiri warned the other remaining chiefs – Chief Zvimba, Chief Seremani and Chief Chidziva – who presided over the matter that they will die one after the other as the avenging spirit strikes back.

Following Chief Beperere’s death, the family now claims he was a victim of Mugabe’s vengeful spirit.

Beperere’s son Edward, who was spokesperson for the Zvimba chiefs when they met President Emmerson Mnangagwa in September last year, is now allegedly afflicted by an undisclosed ailment.

One of Edward’s sons is also said to be sick, while Chief Zvimba and Chidziva are reportedly now bed-ridden. Tinos Manongovere, the headman who took Grace Mugabe to the traditional court demanding Mugabe’s burial, blamed Chief Zvimba’s woes on old age.

Manongovere said, “There is nothing amiss about his ill health. Remember he is advanced in age. At more than 80 years old you can’t expect him to be running up and down like a teenager.”

However, Matibiri maintained that the former President’s spirit is “settling issues with the living”.

Matibiri said, “The spirit of the departed has a way of settling issues with the living. As Mugabe family, we will not mourn Chief Beperere with others because we feel that he was being punished by the avenging spirit for taking part in the ex- humation judgement.”

Female Afghan judges on the run, after Taliban freed male rapists, murderers, they convicted

Female judges in Afghanistan say they are being threatened and haunted by men they convicted for rape and murder, after they were freed from prison by the new Taliban regime.

Speaking to the BBC on behalf of over 200 female judges in the country who are currently in hiding, six former female judges said they had to go into hiding after recieving threats from the men they imprisoned.

The women said they were moving every few days, as the Taliban had been searching for them, visiting their former homes and harassing their relatives.

The six female former judges who had dealt with cases like murder, torture, rape, and violence against women, said they were just six of the 220 female judges across Afghanistan who were now in hiding.

According to the report, every one of them had received death threats and had to change their phone numbers.

All of them say they have been changing their locations every few days to avoid being tracked down.

One of the judges who was identified simply as Masooma, had sentenced a man to 20 years in prison for murdering his wife.

After the case was over, the criminal approached me and said: ‘When I get out of prison, I will do to you what I did to my wife,’” Masooma said.

She added that, since the Taliban takeover, “he has called me many times and said he has taken all of my information from the court offices.”

“He told me: ‘I will find you and have my revenge.’”

“I can still see the image of that young woman in my mind. It was a brutal crime.

“At the time I didn’t take him seriously. But since the Taliban took power, he has called me many times and said he has taken all of my information from the court offices.”

In her career as a judge, Masooma had convicted hundreds of men for violence against women, including rape, murder and torture.

But just days after the Taliban took control of her city and thousands of convicted criminals were released from prison, the death threats began.

She said text messages, voice notes and unknown numbers began bombarding her phone.

“It was midnight when we heard the Taliban had freed all the prisoners from jail,” says Masooma.

“Immediately we fled. We left our homes and everything behind.

“Sometimes I think, what is our crime? Being educated? Trying to help women and punish criminals?

“I love my country. But now I am a prisoner. We have no money. We cannot leave the house.

“I look at my young son and I don’t know how to explain to him why he can’t talk to other children or play out in the hall. He’s already traumatised.

“I can only pray for the day when we will be free again.”

Another woman named, Sanaa, who was a judge for more than 30 years, said she had received “more than 20 threatening phone calls from former inmates who have now been released.”

For more than three decades, Judge Sanaa investigated cases of violence against women and children.

She says the majority of her cases involved convicting members of the Taliban as well as militant group Isis.

“I have received more than 20 threatening phone calls from former inmates who have now been released.”

She is currently in hiding with more than a dozen family members.

She said that a male relative who returned to her family home was met by a Taliban member looking for her, and that the fighter beat him so badly that he had to go to the hospital.

Another of the six female judges, Asma, said:

“I wanted to serve my country, that’s why I became a judge,” says Asma, speaking from a safe house.

“In the family affairs court, I dealt mostly with cases involving women who wanted a divorce or separation from members of the Taliban.

This posed a real threat to us. Once, the Taliban even launched rockets at the court.

“We also lost one of our best friends and judges. She disappeared on her way home from work. Only later was her body discovered.”

But a Taliban spokesman, Bilal Karimi, who was asked to comment on the allegations, said:

“Female judges should live like any other family without fear. No-one should threaten them. Our special military units are obliged to investigate such complaints and act if there is a violation.”

Ayade tasks INEC on credible 2023 elections, reaffirms commitment to Nigeria’s unity

The Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, on Monday charged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct free and fair elections in 2023.

The governor, who made the call when the state’s new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Cyril Omoregbe, visited him at the Government House in Calabar, described credible elections as the catalyst for national unity and antidote to voters’ apathy.

He urged the commission to be wary of desperate lobbyists and politicians in the run-up to the elections.

Ayade said: “We must go through the 2023 elections in peace under your superintendence. You must have the conscience to do that which is fair as politicians will always seek to lobby and subvert the will of the people.

Politics involves lobbying and persuasion for somebody to do your bidding, and which comes in different forms. But the moral that guides your conscience and actions should determine how you handle such situation.”

When the outcome of an election is not free and fair, voters feel they wasted their time voting and may not vote next time.”

He urged INEC to make fairness its watchword.

The governor reiterated his unwavering belief in the unity of Nigeria, saying that separation was not the solution to the myriad of challenges facing the country.

“I preach peace, because even if you split this country and the South and North go their separate ways, the South will go with its own conflicts and the North will go with its own conflicts.

He added: “The reality, therefore, is that the oneness of this country is the way to go.”

‘APC will not rule Nigeria beyond 2023,’ PDP tells Sheriff

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday knocked the former Governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, for claiming that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would rule Nigeria for the next 40 years.

Sheriff had said on Sunday the APC needed a rugged chairman to manage its affairs ahead of the 2023 election.

The former governor, who addressed journalists in Abuja, added that the party would rule the country for the next 30 to 40 years.

However, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said Nigerians are determined in their resolve not to allow the APC to rule Nigeria beyond May 29, 2023.

The statement read: “Ali Modu Sheriff must know that Nigerians are aware of the desperate plots by the APC and its members that are behind acts of terrorism, banditry, treasury looting, violation of rights and electoral manipulations in our country, to continue to enjoy official cover using the APC as a platform for their reprehensible activities.

“Nigerians have decided to kick out the APC in the 2023 general election and no amount of manipulations or evil machination can sway that resolve to ensure that the APC does not stay a day beyond May 29, 2023.

“The PDP, therefore, has nothing but pity for Ali Modu Sheriff and his co-travelers as the conspiracies against our dear nation will surely come to naught.”

Japanese princess forgoes $1.35m inheritance to marry ‘commoner’ in rare show of true love

A Japanese Princess, Mako, is set to forego a one-off payment of $1.35 million for giving up her royal status to wed an American commoner who was her college classmate, Japan’s top media outfit, Bangok Post reported on Saturday.

Under Japan‘s males-only royal succession law, female members of the imperial family lose their status on marrying commoners.

Princess Mako’s decision ended years of “would-she-would-she-not” contemplation, clearing the way for a marriage delayed by controversy over her fiance.

The 29-year-old who is the grand-daughter of then-Emperor Akihito and her former college classmate, Kei Komuro, announced their engagement in 2017, sparking serious consternation in the Asian country which frowns at royals getting married to commoners or run the risk of losing the payoff and their inheritance.

The marriage was initially put off following reports of a financial dispute between Komuro’s mother and her former fiance who was from a royal family.

With the decision by Princess Mako, the Japanese government is set to agree that she forego the 150 million yen ($1.35 million) meant for royals giving up their status to marry commoners, amid public criticism over her fiance.

According to media reports, the wedding date may be announced anytime in October.

Princess Mako of Akishino and Komuro, also 29, plan to live together in the United States after their nuptials later this year, and are planning living their lives without a helping hand from the Japanese government.

Prior to announcing their engagement in 2017, the couple, who met in 2012 while studying at International Christian University in Tokyo, have been able to weather the storm over the years and hope to live a peaceful life out of the limelight.

Following the couple’s engagement, an advisory panel on imperial succession was put in place to discuss the challenges the law presents when it comes to succession, and particularly whether or not to allow female members of the royal family to retain imperial status after marrying “commoners.”

Komuro, who is already living in the US and is awaiting the results of his law exams in December, is expected to take up an offer from a US law firm after the results.

Princess Mako and Komuro’s love story has been plagued with controversy.

As a member of Japan’s imperial royal family and niece of Emperor Naruhito, who currently reigns over the Chrysanthemum Throne, Mako’s decision to wed a “commoner” means she will have to give up her title, according to Japan’s 1947 Imperial House Law.

Princess Mako’s grandmother, former Empress Michiko, had described her as “naive” and called for the end of their relationship in 2017 after reports surfaced that Komuro’s mother was involved in a nearly $40,000 (4.3 million yen) monetary dispute.

The disagreement, is still ongoing and involved the ex-partner of Komuro’s mother, who is a widow and claims the funds were a loan, some of which reportedly went to financing Komuro’s schooling, something the Princess’ family see as a disgrace and a slap of their royal status.

But despite the rejection and controversy caused by their love affair, the couple appear determined to go ahead with their wedding plans and are set to marry later this year.

In an interview last year, Princess Mako had said:

For us, a marriage is a necessary choice to live and honor our hearts.

“We are irreplaceable for one another, and we lean on each other in happy times and unhappy ones.”

I trained for six months, didn’t see my family, says Usyk after Anthony Joshua’s defeat

New heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk says he trained for half a year in other to defeat Anthony Joshua.
He said this in a post-match interview with Skysports, adding that the only thing he wanted to do with the fight against defeated Anthony Joshua was to give praise to Jesus Christ.
Usyk said, “This means a lot for me. The fight went the way I expected it to go. There were moments when Anthony pushed me hard but it was nothing special.
“I had no objective to knock him out because my corner pushed me not to do that. In the beginning, I tried to hit him hard, but then I stuck to my job.
“The only thing I wanted to do with this fight is to give praise to Jesus Christ.
“I have been working so hard since January in preparation for this fight, it took me half a year and I didn’t see my family for so long. I missed seeing them playing.
“I want to go home and be happy with my family and I’m not thinking about the rematch.”

At 34, Usyk is three years older than Joshua and he was also giving away three inches in height as well as nearly 20lbs (nine kilogrammes) in weight.
Usyk ended Anthony Joshua’s reign as world heavyweight champion with a stunning unanimous points decision victory on Saturday.

Joshua ended the 12th and final round of the contest backed up on the ropes, with the cheers of a crowd of more than 62,000 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium no match for the skills of his challenger.
The impressive Ukrainian triumphed 117-112, 116-112 and 115-113 on the scorecards of the three judges in just the former undisputed cruiserweight world champion’s third bout as a heavyweight.
His victory, which extended Usyk’s perfect record as a professional to 19 wins from as many fights, saw him become just the third boxer after Evander Holyfield of the United States and Britain’s David Haye to win both the cruiserweight and heavyweight world titles.
Joshua, 31, whipped his loyal supporters into a frenzy during a protracted ring walk but did not get carried away himself during a cagey first round where he tried to establish his left jab.
Usyk, moving well, continued to prove a difficult target to hit during the second round and the southpaw staggered Joshua with a powerful roundhouse left-hand punch to the head in the third.

And his left continued to prove potent throughout a contest where a slimmed down Joshua did not appear to gain much resulting benefit in ring speed, while at the same time lacking power in his punches.
By the end of the tenth round, there was swelling under Joshua’s right eye.
Usyk landed the cleaner shots in the closing stages as he backed Joshua onto the ropes and appeared poised for a knockout when the final bell sounded.

Nigerian Army condemns assault of corps member, to punish erring soldier for misconduct

The Nigerian Army on Friday described as gross misconduct, the alleged assault of a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) by one of its personnel in Calabar, Cross River State.

In a video that surfaced on social media earlier on Friday, an army officer, Lt. Chika Anele, was seen pouring dirty water scooped from a bucket on the corps member, Ifenyinwa Ezeiruaku, at the 13 Brigade headquarters in Calabar.

Anele was also seen hitting the corps member, who knelt down with uniform, on the head with the back of the bowl.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, who reacted to the incident in a statement in Abuja, said the army officer would undergo regimental trial in line with the extant provisions of the Armed Forces Act.

Nwachukwu said: “The Nigerian Army has taken cognizance of a video clip currently making the rounds on social media, where a female officer was seen dehumanising a member of the National Youth Service Corps in Calabar, Cross River State. This act is not only condemnable but unprofessional and against established precepts of discipline in the Nigerian Army.

“The Nigerian Army, therefore, condemns in strong terms, this act of gross misconduct. Undoubtedly, the officer’s actions have caused the Nigerian Army monumental embarrassment and it’s highly regrettable. This unfortunate act of indiscipline does not in any way represent the Nigerian Army and will not be condoned in its entirety.

“For the records, the ugly incident happened in 13 Brigade, Calabar. The brigade commander immediately instituted an investigation and the officer involved has been identified and sanctioned in the interim and would be made to undergo regimental orders (trial) in line with the extant provisions of the Armed Forces Act.”

The army spokesman also dismissed the insinuation that the Brigade headquarters tried to cover up the incident.

He, however, asked the victim, her family, friends, the NYSC, and Nigerians to forgive the Nigerian Army over the incident.

Read the full list below:

”5 things to never do for a woman — A Thread

Firstly, Never pay a woman’s school fees. Unless she is your wife, never pay for a woman’s education. I’ve seen people send their woman to school only for her to meet her soulmate in school.

Secondly, Never disrespect your family or friends for any woman. A woman can leave you at any point, most especially dark times, but your family and friends will always be there for you. Most especially family, Family is irreplaceable. Don’t play yourself Kings.

Thirdly, Never buy a car or house for a woman when you don’t own one. You should always put yourself first before anyone, not just women. It’s not selfishness, you should always come first kings. If you’re buying one to impress her when you don’t have, that’s stupidity. Wake up!!

Fifthly, Never commit crimes to meet a woman’s need. Stealing, fraud just to provide for and impress a woman? That’s a no-go area kings.

Bonus: Never commit suicide because of a woman. There’s over 3 billion women in the world. If one stress you, run and move to the next. You deserve better kings.”

Branding of North as ‘parasite’ in Nigeria unfortunate – Gov Yahaya

The Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, on Tuesday decried the denigration of Northern Nigeria by some people despite the region’s abundant mineral resources.

The governor, who addressed journalists during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Gombe State government and Rift Oil and Petroleum Company on the exploration of hydrocarbon and energy resources at the Kolmani Oilfields, said he feels bad when people referred to the region as a “parasite” in Nigeria.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) discovered crude oil, gas and condensates in the Kolmani River region located in a border community between Bauchi and Gombe States in October 2019.

Yahaya also took a swipe at successive administrations in Gombe for not taking oil exploration in the Kolmani Oilfields serious thereby setting the state back economically.

He stressed that more than ever before, the need for the state to take advantage of oil and gas in the oilfields has become imperative, especially with the signing of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and the clamour by some states to collect and retain the Value Added Tax (VAT).

The governor said the lack of political will by previous administrations to explore the abundant mineral resources in Gombe was responsible for the state’s economic predicament.

Yahaya said: “The need for us to explore and get maximum benefit from our God-given natural endowments is imperative now having realized how much ground we have lost in that direction.”

Utomi, Jega, others float coalition to ‘rescue Nigeria’

A former presidential aspirant, Prof. Pat Utomi; has teamed up with the ex-Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega; and other like minds to form a coalition to rescue Nigeria.

The group, Rescue Nigeria Project (RNP), was unveiled on Tuesday in Abuja with the mandate to provide an alternative political platform to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Other members of the coalition are former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke; his Kwara State counterpart, Abdulfatah Ahmed; a former Minister of Education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran; Senator Lee Maeba, Dr. Usman Bugaje, and Amb. Nkoyo Toyo, among others.

Ahmed, who delivered a keynote address at the event, expressed sadness at the inability of the current administration to manage Nigeria’s diversity.

He said: “It is based on this that we decided to set up this Rescue Nigeria Project. We want to salvage this country and see how we can fix the mess. We want to set a template that leaders must have before they can attain any political position.

“Despite the great opportunities of the past, Nigeria has failed to live up to the dreams of its founding fathers and the hopes of successive generations of its citizens.

Perhaps, at no other time have these failings become more apparent than in the past decade or so.

“In 2015, Nigerians overwhelmingly embraced the promise of change. These hopes have not only been dashed, but they have arguably turned out to be the worst political statements ever to be made in this country. Nigeria today appears set to fulfill all the prophecies of doom.”

On his part, Bugaje, who is the National Coordinator of the RNP, said: “When you reduce the problems of this country to what they are, ultimately, it all comes to leadership.

“We have been unable to exit the leadership conundrum precisely because the leadership recruitment mechanism in our political parties is so flawed that, except for accidents, they are incapable of producing competent leaders with the requisite knowledge, discipline, and commitment to make a difference.

“We are living with, or better still, groaning under the consequences of this folly.”

‘Stop cursing leaders over hardship,’ Sanusi counsels Nigerians

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, on Tuesday advised Nigerians to desist from raining curses on the country’s leaders over the current hardship in the country.

Sanusi, who addressed members of the Tijjaniyya Movement in Nigeria at an event in Sokoto, urged Nigerians to constantly pray for the country’s leaders.

He said: “What is expected of us now is patience, fervent prayers and we must stand up to get things better in our own way through legitimate ways.

“We must desist from abusing or cursing our leaders over hardship because the Holy Prophet discouraged that.

We shall not involve ourselves in corrupt practices and other atrocities because our religion preaches against it.

“We must change for the better and remain committed to peace and development of our societies.”

The deposed Emir of Kano also urged the group followers to be politically active as the 2023 election approaches.

“When you are approached during elections, you need to ask for recognition in terms of school construction, health facility, and other services,” he added.

‘The world no longer cares about ‘America First,’ Iran President blasts US at UNGA 76

The Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, on Tuesday, slammed the United States in his address at the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly holding in New York.

Raisi, who delivered his recorded speech remotely, said the world no longer cares about the US’s slogan of “America First.”

He also took a swipe at the US with specific mention of two events that made history this year.

The events, according to him, were the January 6 Capitol Hill insurrection and the last month’s incident in Kabul where some Afghans fell from the US evacuation planes.

In the light of the incidents, Raisi asked the US to refrain from trying to influence the world, saying no one cares about “America First” or “America’s Back,” a thinly veiled jab aimed at both President Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump.

He said: “Freedom does not fit in the backpacks of soldiers coming from outside the region.

“The world does not care about ‘America First’ or ‘America’s Back’ any longer.”

Ghanaians lock up foreign traders’ shops, after targeting Nigerians

Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) resumed their clampdown on foreigners engaging in retail trading within the West African country, which has been a hotbed for hostility against small businesses owned by non-indigenes.

The trade union has been speaking against the retail operations of foreigners, stating that their venture is against the country’s constitution, ‘Act 865 section 27A’.

Nigeria, foreigners breach retail business exclusive list for Ghanaians

Findings by Ripples Nigeria showed that based on the Act, the foreigners are encroaching on enterprises reserved for citizens or meant to be wholly owned by Ghanaian citizens.

This has led to the closure of over 40 shops around the eastern region of Koforidua, on Monday, Ghanaian media outlet, Citi News, reported.

Checks by Ripples Nigeria showed that ‘Act 865 section 27A’ states that only Ghanaians have the right to own enterprises involved in sale of goods or provision of services in a market.

Part of the exclusive list for retail business includes petty trading, hawking, as well as selling of goods in a stall at any location. The Act also states car hire service, such as taxi, with less than twenty-five vehicles shouldn’t be operated by a foreigner.

Non-Ghanaians are also forbid from operating beauty salon, barber shop, or printing of recharge scratch cards for network providers.

Other small businesses listed are, “the production of exercise books and other basic stationery, the retail of finished pharmaceutical products, as well as the production, supply and retail of sachet water, not leaving out all aspects of pool betting business and lotteries, aside from football pool.” Ghana Business Regulatory Reforms said on its portal.

Trade union playing role of Police

The members of GUTA who were pictured carrying placards, inscribed that the Police should stop foreigners from conducting illegal businesses, and ensure the non-Ghanaian traders obey Act 865 section 27A.

In one of the placards, GUTA said it will police its markets, and “Foreigners are prohibited from retailing our markets.” Although they have faced resistance from the yet-to-be identified foreigners.

GUTA’s Public Relations Officer, Darlen Nana Boateng, said enforcing their retail business act has been chaotic, with a foreigner insisting on opening his shop after the trade union closed it.

“Our members shut down a shop but when the business owner came in, he opened the shop and insisted that he will work and whatever it takes, he will not comply with the directive.”

Boateng said businesses are not being destroyed, but “foreign retailers should just comply with the law.” and no one is allowed to “take the law into their own hands and be resisting the laws of Ghana.”

In the past three years, Nigerian-owned businesses have been experiencing confrontation from GUTA, with the faceoff hitting a climax when President Muhammadu Buhari shutdown Nigeria’s land border in Q4 2019.
