Last World Cup tickets to go on sale next week – FIFA

The remaining tickets for this year’s World Cup in Qatar will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from next week, FIFA said on Wednesday.

About 1.8 million tickets were sold in the first two batches of sales, FIFA said, without saying how many are now available.

Qatar will host the first World Cup in the Middle East from November 21 to December 18 at eight stadiums in and around the capital, Doha.

The latest tickets will go on sale online from July 5 at 12pm Doha time (0900 GMT) until 12pm on August 16, FIFA said in a press release.

“Huge worldwide interest is anticipated in the new sales period,” the world body said.

Officials said three million tickets are available in total, including those allocated to sponsors.

Last week, the World Cup’s chief organiser Hassan Al-Thawadi said 1.2 million tickets had been sold so far.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said there were five million ticket requests just for the final at the 80,000-seat Lusail stadium.

Doha, with a population of about 2.4 million and limited accommodation, is bracing itself for a huge influx of visitors for the 32-team tournament.

Last month, Qatar announced scores of daily shuttle flights from neighbouring Gulf countries, allowing fans to stay elsewhere and fly in to watch games.

Man dies after friend allegedly stole his ATM card and withdrew N700,000.

A 60-year-old man named Isak Wahab (pictured above) reportedly died from shock after a friend allegedly stole his ATM and withdrew N700,000 from his bank account.

The deceased’s wife, Monsurat, accused his friend, identified only as Ola, of making the withdrawal, which she said led to the death of her husband.

Monsurat said Ola stole her husband’s ATM when he visited them at their residence in the Ikotun area of Lagos State, according to Punch.

She said: “Ola was a close friend to our family, particularly my husband. He had financial difficulties with his rent and he came to my husband to tell him that he wanted to sell his generator so that he could raise money to pay his rent. My husband told him not to do that and said he was expecting payment from our tenants and he could help. My husband then gave him N10,000.

“Meanwhile, we did not know that Ola had taken my husband’s ATM card and he withdrew money from it amounting to N700,000. He withdrew the money in tranches of N200,000, N300,000 and another N200,000.”

The deceased’s son, Ajibola, alleged that Ola stole his father’s ATM card after his father became intoxicated while they drank alcohol together.

He said the case was reported at the Ikotun Police Station for investigation, adding that the suspect disappeared after he was accused of being responsible for the death.

Ajibola said: “Last week Thursday, my dad was not alright, but I felt it was just ordinary malaria or a small illness. But later, I was told that it was serious and I had to call my siblings. We later learnt from our mother that our father was defrauded by Mr Ola.

“My father died on Friday and we buried him on Saturday. After his burial, we went to his friend’s house, confronted him and while arguing with him, we seized his phone. Since that day, we have not seen him.

“As I speak to you, I have his phone with me and we have reported the case at the Ikotun Police Station. He had issues and needed money and our father promised to help and gave him N10,000.

“Now, Mr Ola took our father’s ATM card, went to a PoS operator, and transferred about N700,000 from his account to other accounts. When our father saw it, he was deeply sad and he died because he never expected that his best friend would do that to him.”

Indian Hindu tailor beheaded on camera for going online to show support for a politician who made controversial remarks about Prophet Mohammed.

An India tailor was beheaded on camera in Rajasthan by two self-proclaimed ‘Islamic warriors’ after sharing a post in support of a politician who sparked global protests with controversial remarks about Prophet Mohammed.

The two self-proclaimed ‘Islamic warriors visited Kanhaiya Lal’s small shop in a crowded Udaipur market, pretending to be customers, and engaging him in a discussion before attacking him.

Lal is heard pleading with them to spare him, in a video filmed by the attackers themselves.

One attacker repeatedly strikes the tailor on his neck from behind, even as he collapses to the ground screaming for his life.

The pair then went online, identifying themselves as Mohammed Riyaz Ansari and Ghouse Mohammed, claiming responsibility for the attack.

The victim was reportedly targeted for sharing a social media post in support of recent comments made by a spokeswoman for India’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) about the Islamic Prophet Mohammed.

The remarks by Nupur Sharma at a TV debate in late May were deemed ‘blasphemous’ and sparked protests that turned violent in some parts of India and demonstrations across the Islamic world.

According to Mail Online, Sharma was sacked by the BJP after her comments, which saw the governments of nearly 20 countries summoning their Indian envoys for an explanation.

The two attackers released another video after the killing in which they brandished knives and issued a chilling warning to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that they would ‘douse the fire he had started’.

The two men, Mohammad Riyaz Ansari and Ghouse Mohammed have both now been arrested.

‘Both the accused in the killing have been arrested and we will ensure strict punishment and speedy justice,’ said Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot.

Gehlot appealed to people to not share the video as it would ‘serve the attackers motive of creating discord in society’.

The Union Home Ministry has dispatched a high-level anti-terror investigation team to the spot.

Aregbesola laments rising inmate population, seeks 12-month trial.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has said the increasing number of inmates awaiting trial is having a toll on the custodian centres and the available resources for the service.

Aregbesola, who blamed the congestion of prisons on the slow dispensation of justice, proposed that from the arrest of suspects to the conclusion of their cases in court, the period should not go beyond a year.

He expressed confidence that this was possible, adding that it took him 42 months to reclaim his mandate in Osun State but now took less than a year to conclude election tribunal cases.

Aregbesola spoke on day two of the Nigerian Correctional Service retreat for senior officers in Sokoto on Tuesday.

The minister said, “Let there be a strong advocacy for rapid dispensation of justice. When I went to court to get my mandate that was stolen in Osun the process lasted 42 months. It was precisely six months to the expiration of the tenure that my mandate was returned.

“It was that experience that forced the judiciary to say every litigation on governorship election must not last more than a year and since then they have kept to it. To reduce the number of inmates awaiting trial we must ensure that the time from arrest to conviction must not go beyond a year.

“If this is done, we will reduce the large percentage of inmates in our correctional centers. We will also be able to reduce the humongous cost of feeding them and the lack of not having enough resources.

“If we can reduce the number of awaiting trial inmates by cutting short the period of trial to a maximum of 12 months the amount we are going to save from feeding them will be enough to revamp the service and our centers.”

Aregbesola also bemoaned what he described as unbefitting status of some of the correctional facilities across the country, urging the personnel to mobilize community efforts to change the facial appearance of the facilities.

French interior minister apologizes for ‘bad management’ at UCL final.

French interior minister Gerald Darmanin has apologised to “everyone who suffered from bad management” at the 2021/2022 UEFA Champions League final match in Paris.

However, the 39-year-old, who had previously made outlandish claims about the number of counterfeit tickets in circulation at the Stade de France, stopped short of saying sorry to the Liverpool fans.

He had blamed them for the problems on the night of the club’s defeat to Real Madrid.

“Should the Stade de France have been better managed? The answer is `yes’,” he said, following the incidence of supporters being locked out and then tear-gassed after serious congestion problems developed.

“Am I partly responsible? The answer is `yes’. Of course, I readily apologise to everyone who suffered from this bad management of the event.”

After the match, supporters complained of being robbed by local gangs, with the police offering no protection.

The police had earlier employed heavy-handed methods in an attempt to deal with the growing crowd issue.

Darmanin said they had learned from that and France’s two recent UEFA Nations League matches and the Top 14 rugby final at the stadium all passed off without any major incident.

“It profoundly changed the organisation of the police headquarters,” he added.

“I changed the organisation to fight against delinquency because, if there was something that went wrong at the Stade de France, it was the fight against delinquency.”

Earlier this month the interior minister apologised to a French Senate committee hearing for “the disproportionate use of tear gas”.

But his claims that 35,000 and 40,000 supporters without tickets or fake tickets were present around the Stade de France were debunked by a UEFA official.

The official had said UEFA’s count of counterfeits was closer to 2,600.

Tension in Delta community as soldiers allegedly kill 27-year-old

Tension has gripped the Ogulagha community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State as soldiers attached to Forcados Terminal have reportedly shot dead a youth in the community, Endurance Kalaepele.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the 27-year-old man was allegedly shot twice by the military men while picking snails with his team of snail hunters.

It was gathered that the incident happened at about 11:00 p.m. on Monday.

Consequently, enraged youths of the community have gone on rampages, destroying company vehicles and property just as they also took over the major roads in the community to express their anger.

Commenting on the incident, the youth president of the Ogulagha community, ThankGod Iyaragba, told journalists that the deceased was with six others hunting snails late Monday night when he was allegedly shot dead by soldiers.

The youth president said, “Around 10:00p.m yesterday (Monday), six of the community boys went to the bush behind Forcadoes Terminal, the Pipeline bush, for snail picking, but were intercepted on their way back by the military men.

“One of the boys, Endurance, tried to run out of fear but was shot twice at close range.

“This infuriated youths of the community who went on the rampage destroying company vehicles and property.

“They have also taken over the major roads in the community to express their anger”.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe told The PUNCH that he was yet to get details of the incident as of the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the Special Assistant to the Governor of Delta State on Political Matters, Comrade Ozobo Austin, has described the killing of the 27-year-old youth by suspected soldiers in the Forcados terminal as “unprofessional, provocative, barbaric” which could incite unrest in the community.

This was contained in a signed statement he made available to newsmen in Warri on Tuesday afternoon.

The governor’s aide while sympathising with the entire Ogulagha community and the bereaved family, appealed to the aggrieved youths to calm their frayed nerves assuring that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa will investigate the incident and bring to book every soldier that is involved in the dastardly act.

According to Ozobo, the unlawful killing of the young youth in the Ogulagha community should be outrightly condemned by every well-meaning citizen of the State insisting that it was wrong that the military has always been going for soft targets in the Niger Delta region.

Such attitudes, he said, displayed deep parallel lines between the citizens and the security agents just as he advised security authorities to always educate their men to remain civil when dealing with law-abiding citizens in the country.

Court dismisses fresh bail application for Nnamdi Kanu.

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday dismissed a fresh application for bail by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The application was filed pending the determination of the treasonable felony charge against him by the Federal Government.

Kanu, who is currently facing a seven-count charge, had in the application he filed through his team of lawyers led by Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), also challenged the revocation of the bail the court earlier granted to him.

He asked the court to set aside the order it made on March 28, 2019, which not only issued a bench warrant for his arrest, but also gave FG the nod to try him in absentia.

The IPOB leader told the court that contrary to FG’s allegation that he jumped bail, he fled for his life after his home town at Afaraukwu Ibeku in Umuahia, Abia State, was invaded by soldiers, which he said led to the death of 28 persons.

While contending that he was denied a fair hearing before his bail was revoked, Kanu attached eight exhibits that included photographs, as well as an affidavit he deposed from Isreal, after he fled from the country.

Meanwhile, dismissing the bail request on Tuesday, Justice Binta Nyako said she was not satisfied with the reason the IPOB leader gave for his failure to appear in court for the continuation of his trial.

The trial judge noted that from records of the court, Kanu was represented by his lawyer on the day his bail was revoked, likewise his sureties.

“In fact, he sureties told the court that they did not know the whereabouts of the Defendant and even applied to be discharged from the matter.

“Therefore, Defendant was not denied a fair hearing”.

Justices Nyako also held that though a court could vacate a previous order when confronted with a cogent and verifiable reason, “in the instant case, I have not been given any, neither have I been given any reason to set aside the order.

“The present application amounts to an abuse of court process for attempting to relitigate an issue already decided by the court.

“If the Defendant is dissatisfied, he has the Appeal Court to go to. This application is accordingly dismissed”, Justice Nyako said.

The Judge had also on March 18, declined to release the embattled IPOB leader on bail.

The court maintained that Kanu must explain the reason why he breached the previous bail that was given to him, before he could enjoy another favourable discretion from it.

“Until the issue of the absence of the defendant for his trial, with all the bail conditions breached, is determined, the instant application of the defendant for bail will at best be premature and it is refused.

“However, the defendant is at liberty to re-file the application”, Justice Nyako said.

Meanwhile, the case has been adjourned till November 14 for mention, to await the outcome of Kanu’s appeal.

Maduka Okoye asked to be excused from Super Eagles of Nigeria squad – Shorunmu reveals.

Super Eagles goalkeeper coach, Ike Shorunmu has revealed why Watford goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, missed Nigeria’s squad last four games.

The German-born goalkeeper who last featured for the Super Eagles against Tunisia at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon came under heavy criticism for the team’s exit from the tournament.

Following the backlash from angry fans, Okoye allegedly pulled out of the Eagles Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Ghana through illness.

It has also been revealed that he also asked to be left out of the team to focus on settling in at his new club after being invited for the international friendlies against Mexico and Ecuador as well as the 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Sao Tome and Principe.

Speaking with The PUNCH, the Eagles goalkeeper coach Ike Shorunmu said:  “He (Okoye) was not in the team in their last two games before we came on board but he was called up for the friendlies in the USA,” Shorunmu said.

“But the secretary of the team sent me a message he received through a friend that he (Okoye) wanted to be excused for the games as he wanted to focus on settling in at his new club which I rightly understand.

“He is at a new club and he needs to prove himself well with the new coach at the club unlike when he was with his former team where he knew the terrain better.

“I have been in such situations before when I changed club so I understand what he is going through but we hope to have him back in the team in September for the next AFCON qualifiers.

The 22-year-old kept eight clean sheets in 31 games conceding 40 goals. He is tipped to become the Hornet’s first choice in the English Championship.

Fomular one star , Lewis Hamilton reacts to racial slur used about by former world champion Nelson Piquet.

Seven-time formula one world champion, Lewis Hamilton has spoken out for the first time after shocking footage appeared to show three-time F1 world champion Nelson Piquet using a racial slur when describing his clash with Max Verstappen at Silverstone in 2021.

Piquet twice used a racially offensive expression in Portuguese when referring to Hamilton during a Brazilian podcast last November.

The 69-year-old was discussing the collision between Hamilton and Max Verstappen during the 2021 British GP, with the comments resurfacing on social media ahead of the first anniversary of the crash.

“The (neguinho) put the car in the wrong way on the corner, it’s because you don’t know the curve,” he said. “It’s a very high curve, there is no way to pass two cars and there’s no way you can put the car aside. He did [Verstappen] dirty. His luck was that only the other one was gone.”

The Brazilian has been widely condemned by the F1 community for using the term ‘neguinho’ while discussing Hamilton, who is an avid campaigner for racial equality.

Hamilton took to social media on Tuesday afternoon June 28, to address the issue. He broke the silence by quoting a Tweet which read: “What if Lewis Hamilton just tweeted, ‘Who the f*** is Nelson Piquet?’ then closed Twitter,” to which he responded: “Imagine.”

The Mercedes star then released a targeted message in Portuguese, Piquet’s native language, which translated as: “Let’s focus on changing the mindset,” and then a lengthier follow-up: “It’s more than language. These are archaic mindsets need to change and have no place in our sport. I’ve been surrounded by these attitudes and targeted my whole life. There has been plenty of time to learn. Time has come for action.”

According to Sportmail, the burglars broke into the property, which local press say belongs to former Brazil international Ronaldo, in the early hours of Sunday June 26, while the footballer and his family were out.

The criminals reportedly took cash, watches, and jewellery. It is being investigated by the Civil Guard.

The house Verratti was staying at is believed to be in Cala Jondal in the south of Ibiza, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William, and Kate, have enjoyed sunshine breaks at her millionaire uncle’s home called Maison de Bang Bang.

His French model wife, Jessica Aidi has been posting photos and video footage from the Balearic Islands with an ex-Miss France contestant called Charlotte Mint.

British mother returning from life-saving brain surgery in Spain is accused of drug smuggling

A British mother returning from a life-saving brain operation in Spain was stopped by UK Border Force officials after she and her husband were accused of international drug smuggling.

Shocking pictures show Rachel Pighills, 36, sobbing while lying on a stretcher and connected to an oxygen tank inside a warehouse at the docks in Plymouth. While there, she was forced to wait for four hours while border agents meticulously searched their vehicle.

The couple had travelled by ferry on June 17 in a small second-hand ambulance driven by husband Guy, 41, which he claims agents ‘stripped to pieces’ in their failed bid to find narcotics.

Their suitcases and belongings were laid out on the ground of the docks during the search, and Guy saying they were ‘treated like criminals.’

The officials even brought out sniffer dogs, who in an ironic twist, failed to detect the powerful opiates Rachel had been given to control her post-op pain.

The mother-of-one was still recovering from a pioneering surgery she had received four weeks earlier after a ceiling fan struck the back of her head in August 2018, leaving her with atlanto axial instability and basilar invagination.

The conditions meant she was at risk of being ‘internally decapitated’, as her brain was literally sinking into her spine. She can no longer turn her head because each time she did her spine would partially dislocate, increasing the risk of paralysis or death.

Rachel and Guy, who share a 14-year-old daughter, spent almost four years trying to raise £215,000 for pioneering surgery, traveled to Barcelona by road as Guy drove her 1,055 miles in the ambulance.

The 13-and-a-half-hour surgery on May 20 involved inserting metal rods into her spine and re-setting the position of her skull and brain stem.

The operation was a success and after almost four weeks in hospital, Rachel and Guy drove back to the UK on June 17.

But after a 20-hour overnight ferry from Santander to Plymouth, they were stopped by Border Force officials who accused them of drug smuggling.

Rachel said: ‘After all we’ve been through, after the operation we were so looking forward to coming home.

‘When we arrived in Plymouth border force literally leapt on our vehicle and accused us of being drug smugglers.

‘I couldn’t believe it. We had all the documentation but they wouldn’t listen. One of them was really rude and looked quite disappointed when they couldn’t find anything.

‘Bizarrely, neither the sniffer dog or the officials found the big bag of opiates and painkillers I’d been given by the clinic.’

Guy, who had been forced to drive at just 40mph to avoid any sudden movements, comforted his wife while they were ‘treated like criminals’.

The operations manager said: ‘We got spotted by border control and they stripped our ambulance to pieces. They were convinced we were smuggling drugs into the country and we were there for three and a half hours.

‘They stripped the panels took the air panels off and shoved a camera everywhere and they found nothing.

‘It was horrendous, it was painful for Rachel and it has affected her recovery and set her back.

‘They asked her to get off the stretcher but we wanted her to stay which made them suspicious that we were trying to hide something.

‘They made us wheel Rachel off the ambulance and bless her, she was screaming her head off when she was going down and then they stripped the ambulance and this affected her breathing and her oxygen levels due to the stress that this caused her.

‘They made us wheel the luggage off. We took months worth of Rachel’s medication but the dog didn’t even find that. All they found was a £20 note in Rachel’s purse.

‘As soon as we propped her up and they could see the dressing all down her back the mood changed. But we didn’t get an apology. It was the most traumatic experience I’ve ever been through.

‘We are British citizens, we have paid our way our whole lives. It’s a disgrace.’

Neurosurgeon Dr Vicenc Gilete performed the painstaking operation at Teknon Hospital in Barcelona.

Rachel said: ‘The recovery time for this operation is 12 months minimum.

‘Dr Gilete showed us a picture of the operation and it looked like a shark attack, which shows how severe it is.

‘I’ll be doing physiotherapy every day to regain my strength. I’ll always have to turn from my hips but my one goal is to take the dogs for a walk with my family.’

87-year-old man buys a new coffin for his ‘future’ burial, says the two he bought earlier are now old-fashioned.

An 87-year-old man from Busia, Kenya has bought a new coffin for his “future” burial ceremony.

The man identified as Aloise Otieng’ Ng’ombe is said to have bought a coffin worth Ksh58,000 for his burial.

K2TV reported that Aloise had also bought coffins in 2009 and 2012. The father of 18 said the new coffin which is currently being stored at his shop in Obekai area, will serve as his future coffin since the previous coffins were old-fashioned.

He also disclosed that buying a coffin before his death will pass a message to members of the society. Aloise said;

“I want this to be a lesson to my community at large. You may lack basic needs when you are alive. But when you die, people will slaughter bulls, and buy you nice clothes and shoes yet you will be long gone. That is why I decided to plan for a send-off befitting my status in society.”

Judge refuses to hear case of lawyer for dressing as ‘juju priest’ to court

A Federal High Court in Lagos has refused to hear the cases filed by human rights lawyer, Malcolm Omirhobo, for appearing before the court dressed as a ”juju priest”.

Last Thursday, Omirhobo attended proceedings at the Supreme court dressed like a juju priest. He had white chalk-drawn on one of his eyes sockets, had legs chains, and also tied a red cloth around his waist, and had feathers on his head.

Omorhibo told newsmen that he was exercising his fundamental rights following the recent verdict of the apex court which affirmed the wearing of hijab in schools.

On Monday, June 27, the lawyer appeared before Tijani Ringim, the judge, dressed the same way sparking reactions from some lawyers who argued he could not be heard. He was almost stopped at the entrance of the gate because of his dressing but he made his way inside, arguing that he was well dressed.

Omirhobo’s first suit, FHC/L/CS/929/2022, was against the federal government of Nigeria and others while the second suit; FHC/L/CS/1392/2021, was against the Nigeria Army and two others.

When his case was called up and he was rejected, Omorhibo said;

“My Lord, the rules cannot supersede the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

After listening to his argument, Justice Ringim directed Omirhobo to address the court on why he should be heard the way he was dressed on the next adjourned date.

The court ordered that the address must not be more than five pages with authorities cited, adding that it must be filed before the adjourned date.

“You cannot address the court like this as a professional. I will adjourn your matter and you come and address the court if the rules allow you to appear in court like this,” the judge said.

The judge adjourned the hearing to October 10, 2022.

Five Form Four students were said to have been injured after the tear gas canister exploded on them.

The police had earlier said the victims, including the suspect, suffered minor injuries. They were treated at a local hospital and later discharged. The accused person will be sentenced on Wednesday, June 29.

The former DPO of Pambegua Division in Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna, was kidnapped on Monday morning, June 27, along Kaduna-Birnin Gwari Road.

The Chief Superintendent of Police was on the way to his new duty post‎ in Birnin-Gwari, when he ran into the gunmen in a community called Korna Ruwa and was whisked away to an unknown location.
