Woman who had been posting about her divorce fears is killed by her estranged husband in murder-suicide.

A woman was shot to death by her estranged husband inside her Streeterville condominium, and the man then took his own life.

The estranged husband travelled all the way from Georgia to Chicago to commit the murder-suicide this week.

Before their deaths, the victim, Sania Khan, 29 was open about their ongoing divorce and wanted to be a voice for others going through a tough time.

She spoke about the stigma divorced women face in her culture and how her family members tried to force her to stay in the marriage.

Khan, a professional photographer who moved to Chicago last June, has been on TikTok in recent months, openly documenting her divorce from a man she describes as “toxic”.

Khan also posted about the cultural stigma of divorce in the South Asian community.

In one video she wrote: “Going through a divorce as South Asian woman feels like you failed at life sometimes.”

In another post, she said: “It’s painful to walk away from someone you once loved. But it’s even more painful to love someone who is careless with your heart.”

On Monday, July 18, Khan was shot and killed inside her unit in the Grand Ohio condo complex, 211 E. Ohio St. Sources say her ex-husband traveled to Chicago from Georgia, shot Khan, and then killed himself.

Friends have taken to various platforms to express outrage that no one could protect her despite making it clear that her ex was toxic.

“Just speechless,” said Justin Matarrese. “You don’t accept it as being true. It still doesn’t feel true. It feels really unfair.”

A friend of Khan’s wrote on Facebook: “My friend was someone who took all the right steps. She left. She had a restraining order. She changed her locks.”

“It’s very tragic, because she did what she could in her control,” Dsouza said, “and you cannot predict what’s going to happen or what an abuser’s going to do.”

NFF president, Amaju Pinnick condemns use of laser light on Super Falcons during semi-final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation and FIFA Council Member, Amaju Pinnick, has condemned the use of laser lights on the Super Falcons during their defeat to host Morocco in the semi-final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Monday, July 18.

Morocan fans directed the beaming laser lights towards the eyes of the Falcons players to disrupt their play during panlty shootout at the full-packed Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

Despite the ugly scenario, the nine-time champions were reduced to 10 women after midfielder Halimat Ayinde and Rasheedat Ajibade were red-carded during the clash.

In a statement by the NFF media team, Pinnick while hailing the Falcons for their gallant display despite all odds also condemned the laser lights directed at the players.

“Of course, we would have been happy to be in the final and chase a 10th title. But I am happy with the performance of the team and the way and manner they approached the game despite all sorts of setbacks and intimidation,” Pinnick said.

“To play 50 minutes of a game with only nine players is not an easy task. The Super Falcons gave their all and were truly fabulous. They had the ‘Nigeria spirit’ in them and showed a sense of patriotism, were dogged, and refused to give up. Penalties are forever a lottery, so it could have gone either way. I commend the team for the outing.

“Our girls did a massive job on a night they were not only depleted but challenged by laser lights trained on their eyes by the crowd. I am enamoured by their resilience and tenacity.”

Muslim-Muslim ticket: Protesting APC members storm party secretariat

Hundreds of demonstrators on Wednesday morning stormed the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress to register their grievance over the position of the party on the contentious Muslim-Muslim ticket.

The protest took place almost at the same time the leadership of the APC was unveiling former Governor of Borno State, Senator Kashim Shettima, as the running mate of its Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at Shehu Musa Yar’Adua in Abuja.

The demonstration, which was led by a few party members under the aegis of APC Hausa-Fulani Youth Forum, saw the delegation arrive the Secretariat in six luxury buses and few cars, raising different banners and chanting solidarity songs.

Some of the banners read ‘A cry for justice’, ‘Drop Shettima and give slot to our Christian brothers’, ‘Discrimination and mutual suspicion in our country’ among others.

Speaking to our correspondent, Convener of Forum, Abdullahi Bilal Mohamadu declared that they will not stop protesting until the party do the right.

On why the demonstrators took to protest on a day the party is presenting his vice presidential candidate, Mohammadu stated that it was a deliberate act to tender their grievances and ensure it reaches the appropriate authorities.

In a letter addressed to the National Chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and made available to The PUNCH, Mohammadu stated that they saw the selection of Senator Kashim Shettima as an aberration that should be corrected immediately by the leadership of the party.

The letter read, “We write to your good office in light of the prevailing circumstances arising from the decision of our Presidential candidate to select a Northern Muslim as his vice presidential candidate.

“While it must be stated that there is a right to make decisions, however, such decisions must not be made to the collective detriment of the sensibilities of the people that make up the country of Nigeria especially at a time of mutual suspicion amongst the Christians and Muslims in the northern part of the country.

“As concerned stakeholders of the APC and those who constitute the voting strength of our party , we find it worrisome that such a decision could be taken without recourse to its implication on the electoral chances of the party and the attendant uproar such a decision could bring about in the country.

“In our opinion, this is insensitive and a gross display of a lack of respect for our Christian brothers and sisters especially the Middle Belt minority who have given all their best to us as one northern Nigeria. Picking another Muslim from the north eastern part of the country as his running mate is politically and morally indefensible.

“In Northern Nigeria, there are credible candidates with rich credentials and with massive grassroots following that can complement the presidential ticket of the APC in the presidential elections. As such, the Hausa – Fulani Youths Forum sees the selection of Senator Kashim Shettima as an aberration that should be corrected with immediate effect by the relevant authorities within the party.

“The implication of non-action in this regard can only be imagined, so much so that the majority of the eligible voters in Northern Nigeria have elected to boycott the APC in protest of the disrespect and disregard to our Northern Christian brothers , whose population and relevance in the scheme of things in the region cannot be overemphasized.

“If our party is desirous of recording electoral success in the 2023 presidential elections, it must retrace its steps by selecting a Christian from the Middle Belt as its vice presidential candidate. The party must not be perceived as promoting a religious agenda by fielding a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“We consequently say no to a Muslim-Muslim ticket by the APC. We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to kindly intervene to save the party from an electoral crisis. We urge Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to emulate the example of President Muhammadu Buhari in the choice of his running mate in the 2015 and 2019 presidential elections.

“Our Christian brothers and sisters deserve a place in the scheme of things, and our party must not be seen as a religiously insensitive party. The time to act is now.”

JUST IN: COEASU extends strike by three weeks

Lecturers in the Nigerian colleges of education have extended their ongoing strike by three weeks, The PUNCH reports.

The lecturers, under the aegis of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, blamed their decision on the failure of the Federal Government to embrace the union’s preference for the University Transparency Accountability System and the failure of the state governments to address issues peculiar to state-owned colleges of education.

“Most state governments are yet to address issues locally peculiar to state-owned colleges of education, especially in Oyo, Ogun, Kwara, Abia, Kogi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Edo, and Ebonyi states. In fact, the situation has further deteriorated in some of these states with the enforcement of the draconian rule of “no work, no pay” and victimisation of Union leaders.

“The FG is yet to come out clear on the Union’s preference for UTAS against the troublesome Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

“Having submitted the Union’s charter of demands to the FG team for the renegotiation, the posture and sincerity of government towards meaningful collective bargaining cannot be ascertained until August 2, 2022, when the renegotiation proper begins.

The union stated in its communique issued at the end of its National Executive Council meeting.

The communique was signed by the National President, Dr. Smart Olugbeko, and the General Secretary, Dr. Ahmed Lawan.

On the decision to embark on strike, the union said, “While empathetically acknowledging the appeal of critical stakeholders expecting the strike action to be suspended, the NEC painstakingly submitted that the timing must be properly calculated based on the foregoing reservations in order to consolidate on the gains of the struggle. Therefore, NEC unanimously resolved that the strike action should continue for the next three weeks within which the Union hopes that the foregoing reservations should have been addressed”.

Electoral reform reason for Osun election success – Cleric

The Chairman, Anambra State Christian Association of Nigeria, Joseph Nweke, has described the outcome of the Osun State governorship election as a manifestation of God’s intervention in Nigerian politics, and reform in the electoral system.

Nweke said the way the election went showed that God did not want people to over-empower themselves.

The cleric spoke in Onitsha on Tuesday while also commending the lawmakers for embarking on electoral reform, which he said, aimed at restoring parity in the electioneering processes in the country.

Nweke, who is also the Archdeacon of Onitsha Inland Archdeaconry, said the winner, Senator Ademola Adeleke, became the first beneficiary of the new electoral system in Nigeria.

He said, “When I heard that Adeleke won the election, two things came to my mind. There is what I would call the hand of God in the election. It is not an easy thing to defeat an incumbent in any election.

“Osun is a Christian/Muslim state. From what I heard, Osun has over 65% Christian and 35% Muslim and Adeleke is a Christian.

“So, for them to survive, they are working towards their faith. However, the religious politics in the country is growing wings. So, to me, God is at work in Nigeria, starting from Osun State.

“How can you tell me that a serving governor of a state who has the state’s economy at his disposal, could lose the election in such a devastating manner? There is the hand of God in the process and God is taking us to the next level that we have not yet gotten to.”

The cleric also encouraged Nigerians to get their Permanent Voter Cards and get ready to effect the needed change they want in 2023.

He added that CAN as a body had not endorsed any candidate but the people should vote for the right persons that could lead the country out of its present situation.

Imo: Kidnappers free women leader abducted in church.

Kidnappers of one of the women leaders of First Baptist Church at Wetheral Road in Owerri, Imo State, Elizabeth Abioye, who was abducted during a church service, have released her.

Her abductors left her off their hooks on Tuesday evening.

The church in a message of appreciation on Tuesday night confirmed her release and thanked God and those who played important role in her safe return.

The appreciation message read, “People of God, let us make a joyful noise unto the lord, our sister, Mrs Abioye has been released by her abductors. Praise God.

“We give thanks to the Lord, our God for the marvelous way He heard and answered our prayers over her release.

“She was released today, July 19, 2022, from her kidnappers and she is back home safe and in sound mind.

“Our gratitude to everyone that prayed, gave, called and supported us in diverse ways since July 10.”

The victim who is the wife of the General Manager of Imo Zoological Garden at Nekede, Francis Abioye, was kidnaped on July 10 at the church.

Her kidnappers had shot repeatedly into the air before taking her away.

It could not be immediately ascertained if any ransom was paid, but a church source confided in our correspondent said her abductors demanded N100m as the condition for her release.

While her husband had made an offer of N5m which was turned down, church members were allegedly asked to donate into a designated account so as to secure the release of the women leader, the source said.

The police spokesperson, Micheal Abattam, had yet to issue a statement on the release of the woman as of the time of filing this report.

Igbo group knocks South-East politicians over alleged misrepresentation

A pan-Igbo grassroots sociocultural organisation, Imeobi Igbo Forum, has described the present crop of politicians in the South-East as the “worst in history”.

The group also said the present legislators of the region at the National Assembly have failed the Igbo race and insisted that they should be withdrawn from contesting the 2023 general elections.

Addressing journalists in Nnewi, Anambra State, on Tuesday, the National Chairman, IIF, Dr Mike Ikegulu, berated the politicians and elites from the region for their public conduct and utterances in a bid “to please the chieftains of some ethnic groups”, describing it as “disappointing” and “painful”.

Ikegulu said, “Since the emergence of the present crop of Igbo political and business elites, Ndigbo have continued to be shamed and short-changed. We are not genuinely being represented in any sphere of Nigeria affairs.

“Their public conduct and utterances are disappointing and painful, just to please the chieftains of some ethnic groups. These Igbo elites have raped and abandoned Ndigbo.

“Those at the national assembly are insensitive to our collective interests. Never lending a voice on anything of interest to Ndigbo for pecuniary interest and personal aggrandizement.”

He called on the people to take advantage of the ongoing registration of the Permanent Voters Card to register and be ready to vote out leaders who have not meant well for the region.

He lamented that the present system of governance in Nigeria is alien to Ndigbo, adding that the leaders in the region emerge by their actions and utterances, not by election or appointment.

According to him, in a multi-ethnic country such as Nigeria, other ethnic groups have stratified leadership, but the Igbos are represented in such a dastardly fashion.

He also accused the southeast politicians of ganging up to have the Indigenous People of Biafra proscribed, rejected the referendum, set Nnamdi Kanu up and got him kidnapped and incarcerated to silence him.

He said, “These greedy and shameless political elites brought similar disgrace to those other nationalities rooting for a Nigerian president of South-East extraction for equity, justice and fairness.

“For their business and political interests, they ganged up to have IPOB proscribed, rejected referendum, set Nnamdi Kanu up and got him kidnapped and incarcerated to silence him.

“They keep mum over the atrocities committed by occupying forces and the continuing intimidation and slaughter of Igbo youths for agitation.

“Igbo politicians followed the dollars in the party primaries, disregarding the recurring political realities which give us the short end of the stick.

“The present and future generations of Ndigbo will look down on the present group of Igbo political and economic elites who have largely relocated to Abuja, as the worst in history.

“The present Igbo legislators in the national assembly should not be allowed back, for toying with the destiny of Ndigbo, in the complex country of Nigeria.”

“They are there for self, family and friends. One wonders why they are gearing up to return to the same indolent representation at the national assembly in 2023. Even the serving governors are buying their way to the senate as retirement home, this is unacceptable to us.”

NBA star, Miles Bridges charged with three felonies after allegedly beating his children’s mother in front of them.

NBA star and Charlotte Hornets forward, Miles Bridges has been charged with felony domestic and child abuse stemming from an alleged assault on his partner that happened in front of their children.

Bridges, 24, faces one felony count of injuring a child’s parent and two felony counts of child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to cause great bodily injury or death, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office said in a statement.

Bridges allegedly assaulted his girlfriend on or about June 27 and 28 in front of their two children, according to the DA’s statement, which cited a criminal complaint on the matter.

“Domestic violence creates physical, mental and emotional trauma that has a lasting impact on survivors,” District Attorney George Gascón said. “Children who witness family violence are especially vulnerable and the impact on them is immeasurable. Mr. Bridges will be held accountable for his actions and our Bureau of Victim Services will support the survivors through this difficult process.”

The Hornets said the team is aware of the charges.

“These are very serious charges that we will continue to monitor. As this is a legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time,” the team said.

Bridges was initially arrested and charged with a felony on June 29 and was released on a $130,000 bail.

Two days later, Bridges’ partner, Mychelle Johnson, posted photos on Instagram showing injuries to her face. The photos have since been deleted.

Johnson also posted what appeared to be a discharge document from a hospital emergency department, describing her as an “adult victim of physical abuse by male partner” and “assault by strangulation.”

According to the document, her diagnosed injuries included a closed fracture of her nasal bone, a rib contusion, multiple bruises and a neck muscle strain.

“I hate that it has come to this but I can’t be silent anymore. I’ve allowed someone to destroy my home, abuse me in every way possible and traumatize our kids for life,” Johnson wrote in the post accompanying the images.

Killings: MASSOB seeks disbandment of Ebubeagu security outfit

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra has called for the disbandment of Ebubeagu security outfit in Imo State over what it described as atrocious killings.

While condemning the killing of the youths from Otulu town, who were returning from a traditional marriage ceremony, which Ebubeagu allegedly carried out, the pro-Biafra group said the security outfit was established to fight political enemies in Igboland by the state governors.

It added that since their establishment, Ebubeagu operatives had not engaged Islamic terrorists masquerading as herdsmen that have sacked so many villages and settlements in Igboland; instead, they were killing innocent youths.

MASSOB, in a statement issued by its leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu, on Tuesday, “They (Ebubeagu) are primarily established as a witch-hunting outfit to fight political enemies and non-violence pro-Biafra agitators.

“MASSOB described Ebubeagu security outfit as a Dracula evil and agents of death established by Imo state government.

“MASSOB warns Governor Hope Uzodinma to immediately disband his Ebubeagu security outfit now, or we shall see their activities in Biafra land as a declaration of internal war. The so-called Ebubeagu security outfit must cease their operation in Imo state now.”

The PUNCH had reported that gunmen suspected to be operatives of Ebubeagu Security outfit allegedly opened fire and killed seven wedding guests in Otulu town, Imo State, on Sunday.

Russia fines Google $360m for failing to remove content concerning Ukraine war.

A Russian court has fined Google 21 billion rubles ($360 million) for failing to remove content concerning Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine, the nation’s telecommunications regulator has revealed.

The Moscow court said the Google-owned video platform YouTube had failed to block “false information” on the offensive in Ukraine, “extremist and terrorist propaganda” and content “calling on minors to participate in unauthorised demonstrations”.

The regulator, Roskomnadzor said that as this was a repeat conviction for Google hence the huge fine.

Russian authorities have increased pressure on Western social media firms in recent years with repeated fines and threats in a bid to remove criticism from the internet, the only source of free speech in Russia.

Like most of its Western rivals, Google recently quit the Russian market in protest against Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine.

According to Vladimir Zykov, an expert cited by Russian news agency Ria-Novosti, the fine is the largest ever imposed on a Western tech firm by a Russian court.

Russian authorities can impose on Google “as many fines as they wish, they won’t receive the money” as the firm has pulled out of the country, he said.

Russia’s internet regulator, Roskomnadzor branded the activities of Google and YouTube with the “terrorist” label in March, opening up the possibility they would be blocked in Russia, as have Twitter, Instagram and many independent media following the start of the military operation.

In Russia,  the legal penalties for speaking out against the conflict has been increased with thise found guilty of spreading “false information” about the Russian military facing up to 15 years in jail.

Several journalists, some politicians and citizens have already been jailed on such charges.

Minimum marriage age for Muslim women raised to 18 in Malaysia with one year jail for polygamy without permission

The Kedah state assembly in Malaysia has approved amendments to the state Islamic Family Enactment to raise the minimum marriage age for Muslim women to 18 years.

Speaking at the assembly this week, speaker Datuk Juhari Bulat said the amendment involved raising the age of marriage for women from 16 to 18 years old as well as the punishment for polygamy without court permission.

The punishment is imprisonment for one year or a fine of RM3,000 compared to six months imprisonment or a fine of RM1,000 previously.

“If you want to get married, there is any problem, you can apply through the court, if the court finds that the candidate should be allowed even if she is 16 years old, she can marry with the court’s permission.

Speaker Datuk also said Muslim girls aged below 18 who wished to get married may seek approval from the court.

“If the court decides that the applicant should be allowed (to enter marriage) despite being 16 years, the applicant may get married with the court’s approval.

“Those doing so without the court’s approval will be fined,” he told reporters at the end of today’s assembly sitting.

Juhari added that lawmakers also approved an amendment to increase the current RM1,000 fine and six months’ jail for those entering polygamy without obtaining the court’s consent to RM3,000 and one-year jail term respectively.
