Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor ‘very close to finalising a deal worth £130m for a huge boxing rematch.

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are reportedly close to agreeing a deal to stage a sensational rematch.

This is coming nearly five years since Mayweather defeated the UFC superstar in a boxing clash by securing a tenth round TKO victory in Las Vegas back in August 2017.

The Sun has now reported that Mayweather is willing to once again put his unbeaten record on the line in a money-spinning match against McGregor.

Mayweather has not fought professionally in the ring since his victory over the Irishman.

It’s said the two parties are close to cutting a deal after Mayweather offered McGregor $157.9million (£130m) for a rematch.

McGregor is only willing to fight Mayweather if the American’s 50-0 undefeated record is on the line.

The fight would be at 155lbs, meaning McGregor would have to cut some weight after he has reportedly tipped the scales at over 190lbs since breaking his leg.

It’s said that the Mayweather would see the rematch with McGregor as the ‘end of the Mayweather era’ and ‘start of the Gervonta Davis era’.

Mayweather is looking at the bout to take place next March in the Middle East, with a potential fight between Davis and Ryan Garcia as an undercard fight.

McGregor hinted at a potential rematch with Mayweather in a now deleted post he made on his Instagram account last month.

Alongside a picture of their first fight, he hinted at the pair facing off one more time as he wrote: ‘I accept.’

Call to bar ceremony moved from Abuja Law School after terrorists’ threat.

The Nigerian Law School has moved the venue of the call to bar ceremony from the school’s headquarters in Bwari to Airport Road, Abuja.

In a tweet shared on his handle, the Director General of the school, Prof Hayatu Isa Ciroma, disclosed that the new venue is the Secretariat of the Body of Benchers behind the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.

“The Director-General has directed to notify candidates of the change of the Call to the Bar venue from the Nigerian Law School Bwari to the Body of Benchers Secretariat along the Airport Road, Abuja by 1pm tomorrow 27th July, 2022,” he wrote in a tweet.

The organizers advised friends and family members of candidates to stay away from the venue as only the candidates would be cleared to enter. The Body of Benchers in August 2021 called to the bar a total of 4,350 new lawyers.

Although the reason for the change of venue was not given, it may not be unconnected to the heightened level of insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Recall that few days ago, a captain and two soldiers attached to the Presidential Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army were killed in an ambush by terrorists. The soldiers were reportedly ambushed after they visited the Nigeria Law School following a distress call from the authorities of the school.

The school management was said to have alerted that terrorists had dropped a letter indicating an imminent attack on the school.

Shania Twain opens up in tell-all documentary about her husband cheating on her with her best friend.

Shania Twain has recorded a tell-all documentary where she talks about her husband’s devastating affair with her best friend.

The singer poured out her heart in the documentary which will air on Netflix.

Shania said that, having been a role model to females around the world due to the powerful lyrics of her song, it was an extra hard pill for her to swallow when she learnt her ex-husband Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange had been having an affair with her personal assistant who was also her best friend in 2008.

The 56-year-old described the feeling as similar “to losing her parents” in the teaser clip for her new upcoming documentary.

Shania with ex-husband

Reflecting back on the betrayal, Shania said she felt at the time that she “had lost her voice forever”.

Shania discovered that Robert had been unfaithful and had been having an affair with her then-personal assistant, best friend and “confidant” Marie-Anne Thiébaud.

Speaking about the situation with Oprah Winfrey previously, Shania told the host: “I said, ‘Marie-Anne, don’t you think my husband is acting strange?”

“And she said, ‘No, I don’t see anything strange.'”

After 14 years of marriage, Robert who shares son Eja with Shania broke off their union and didn’t give her an explanation.

Her friend Marie-Anne also never revealed the truth to her.

The singer was informed of the infidelity by Marie-Anne’s then-husband Frédéric Thiébaud – who had found out himself.

Speaking on the Oprah Winfrey show about breaking the news he explained: “I said, ‘guys, now you have to tell her. This is ridiculous. You owe her that.'”

Shania and Frédéric

After Robert and Marie-Anne refused to confess to Shania, Frédéric decided to get in touch with the hitmaker.

Shania and Frédéric bonded over their shared heartbreak. They then became close, struck up a romantic relationship, and were married just a few years later.

Speaking of their newfound love on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Shania said: “We were a support to each other and really found something beautiful in the end and unexpected.”

Singer Britney Spears won’t testify’ in conservatorship abuse trial as her father Jamie is set to be grilled under oath

Britney Spears will reportedly not be called to testify over allegations her father Jamie abused his position as conservator.

According to TMZ, the singer’s attorney Mathew Rosengart filed legal documents that state he will be going forward with documents, physical evidence, and just Jamie’s testimony.

Rosengart insisted that Britney’s testimony would not be relevant to any legal proceeding and he will not call her as a witness if the case goes to trial as the fact she would not be called ‘eviscerates’ any reason why she would need to be deposed.

The ongoing legal battle is about Britney’s allegations that her father abused conservatorship regulations and stole from her when he was supposed to be managing her finances.

Last month Jamie’s attorney Alex Weingarten called for the Grammy-winning singer, 40, to be deposed over the ‘incendiary allegations of various factual matters’ that she has made via social media.

However, Britney’s attorney told the court that he felt that the move to push Britney into a deposition was ‘retaliatory’ and ‘abusing the legal process,’ amid an attempted probe of Jamie’s handling of funds and alleged surveillance of the singer.

The lawyer said the …Baby One More Time singer cannot testify to matters about the conservatorship since she was the one living under it, and that she would be traumatized again in facing questions about it.

Rosengart, who has represented the Toxic artist since last year, suggested that Jamie’s legal team should either depose Jamie or Britney’s ex-business manager Lou Taylor for information on the arrangement.

Earlier this month, Jamie was ordered by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge to take part in a deposition about his actions heading the conservatorship the pop star was under for more than 13 years.

Judge Brenda Penny ruled that Jamie, 70, must schedule a deposition by August 12 after he was previously served with notices to sit for a deposition from Britney’s lawyer and did not appear, Page Six reported.

Rosengart said in legal docs filed in May that Jamie had been ‘running and hiding’ from being deposed, and must account ‘for his misconduct – under oath – as required by law.’

Another issue heard before the court was Jamie’s request Britney’s estate cover his attorney’s fees in the wake of the termination of the conservatorship this past November.

After Jamie was dropped by his former legal team, he hired Weingarten at an hourly rate of around $1,200, Variety reported last year.

Rosengart told Page Six that Jamie’s petition was ‘not only legally meritless’ but ‘an abomination’ under the circumstances of the case.

‘Mr. Spears reaped many millions of dollars from Britney as a conservator, while paying his lawyers millions more, all from Britney’s work and hard-earned money,’ Rosengart said of the previous arrangement.

Jamie was loaned $40,000 in 2008 – just before the conservatorship started – by Lou Taylor’s organization Tri Star Sports & Entertainment Group, the outlet reported, adding that Taylor’s attorney Charles Harder said that Jamie had ‘repaid’ the ‘small loan’ and that it had no impact on ‘Tri Star’s work for the estate in later years.’

The ongoing legal battle comes eight months after Britney was finally freed from the controversial legal conservatorship her father and a court-appointed guardian held over her for years.

Lawyer Inibehe Effiong alleges that a judge sentenced him to one month in prison after he asked that armed policemen in the court room be sent out because he didn’t feel safe.

Popular lawyer and activist, Inibehe Effiong has alleged that a judge sentenced him to one month in prison.

The lawyer said this occurred after he asked that the armed policemen in the court room be sent out because he didn’t feel safe.

Effiong said Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot sentenced him to one month in prison while defending one Leo Ekpenyong in the libel suit filed by Governor Udom Emmanuel, even though he allegedly didn’t do anything.

He tweeted;

I have just been sent to Uyo prison by the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot, for one month for defending Leo Ekpenyong in the libel suit filed by Governor Udom Emmanuel.

The Chief Judge of Akwa Akwa Ibom ordered a Premium Times reporter to leave the court. I said my lord, we were thinking that since the proceeding is public, that members of the public should be allowed to observe the proceeding. My Lord asked me to proceed with cross examination.

I obeyed. I informed the court that I was not feeling comfortable and safe having two armed mobile policemen seated inside the courtroom, that it was strange and that I felt unsafe. I applied for the judge to excuse the armed policemen from the courtroom.

The Hon. Chief Judge then ordered me to step out of the Bar, that she was sending me to prison. She then ordered the policemen to take me to Uyo prison. And that I should be in jail for one month. I am waiting inside the courtroom for them to bring the conviction warrant.

I will be going to the Uyo Correctional Centre now. I have not done anything. I wasn’t even opportunity to say anything before the “conviction”. Two lawyers in court appealed to the Hon. Chief Judge but my Lord insisted that I must be jailed.

I will be going to the Uyo Correctional Centre now. I have not done anything. I wasn’t even opportunity to say anything before the “conviction”. Two lawyers in court appealed to the Hon. Chief Judge but my Lord insisted that I must be jailed.

Meanwhile, there is already a pending application for recusal asking the Hon. Chief Judge, Justice Ekaette Obot, to recuse Himself. We filed it since 23rd June, 2022. The motion is still pending.

ASUU strike: NLC, others intensify protest in Abuja

The Nigeria Labour Congress and its affiliate unions on Wednesday in Abuja continued their solidarity protest in support of the five-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, and the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, among others are currently leading the Day 2 protest in solidarity with ASUU in Abuja.

The PUNCH had reported the unions defied warnings by the Federal Government and took to the streets of major cities in the country on Tuesday to protest against the failure of the Federal Government to resolve the five-month strike by ASUU

Specifically, the NLC said the money the two major political parties – the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party – generated from the sale

The university lecturers had shut down public institutions on February 14 over the inability of the Federal Government to implement the agreements it made with ASUU in 2009 as well as the refusal of the current administration to exempt lecturers from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

ASUU had also asked the government to increase funding of tertiary institutions and pay outstanding allowances.

On Wednesday, the protesters converged at the Unity Fountain and continued with the two-day protest in Abuja over the prolonged strike by university workers across the country.

This comes a day after a similar demonstration was held in various states of the Federation, except for the Federal Capital Territory.

The protest began at about 9:30 am after members of the NLC leadership and leaders of various affiliated unions, as well as members converged on the Unity Fountain in the nation’s capital.

Among those physically present were Wabba, Sowore, ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, and the immediate past President of ASUU, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, among others.

PUNCH Metro observed a heavy security presence at the venue of the protest comprising officers of the Nigeria Police, DSS, NSCDC, among others.

Our correspondent gathered that the protesters planned to march down to the National Assembly where the NLC president would deliver a message from the labour unions to lawmakers.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement in Enugu on Tuesday, said that the presentation was done on July 26.

According to Ndukwe, the development is in furtherance of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Alkali Usman’s commitment to improving the welfare of police personnel.

FG must address insecurity before 2023 – Anglican bishop

The bishop of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Owo Diocese, Stephen Fagbemi, has called on the Federal Government to address the issue of security challenges and other issues threatening the existence of the country before the 2023 general elections.

The cleric warned that failure to resolve the issues may not augur well for the country.

Fagbemi gave the warning while reading the Bishop’s Charge at the first session of the 14th Synod of Diocese of Owo Anglican Communion, held at the St. Paul’s Church, Ifon, headquarters of the Ose Local Government. The synod was themed “Chosen to proclaim”.

According to him, Nigeria has found itself in a most unfortunate state, to the extent that some were beginning to suggest that it is becoming a failed state as a result of the inability of the government to address the country’s problems.

He called on churches and individuals to commence a process of self-defense mechanism in the face of the present security threat to the country, adding that if urgent action is not taken by the government, the country may explode.

He said, “What we heard from those who have been released from kidnappers’ den is that a particular ethnic group of this country is responsible and they have a plan to take over every part of the country. We have heard this line of claim several times. A responsible government ought to have investigated this by now and come up with a clear strategy for dealing with this trend.”

On the forthcoming general elections, the cleric said Nigerians need leaders with the necessary aptitude and courage to lead the country out of its quagmire.

He also noted that until the country recognises the rights of every Nigerian to practice the faith of their choice without any intimidation and discrimination, peace, progress and justice will continue to elude the country.

“Going for the 2023 elections without defining these issues and many others that threaten our collective existence is to defer the evil day. I appeal to all civil, religious, and political leaders of this country to abandon all selfish interests and deal with these urgent national issues,” he charged.

Russia-Ukraine war: Europe agrees to emergency gas cuts as Russia cuts supply by 20%.

European Union countries bracing for further cuts in Russian gas supply approved an emergency plan to curb demand of gas on Tuesday , July 26.

Russia state owned gas company, Gazprom (GAZP.MM) said it would cut flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany to 20 percent starting from Wednesday as Europe faces an increased gas squeeze as winter approaches.

With a dozen EU countries already facing lower Russian supplies, the EU is urging member states to save gas and store it for winter for fear Russia will completely cut off flows in retaliation for Western sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Energy ministers approved a proposal for all EU countries to voluntarily cut gas use by 15% in the August to March period .

The cuts could be made binding in a supply emergency, provided a majority of EU countries agree to this. But countries agreed to exempt numerous countries and industries from the binding 15% cut, after some governments opposed the EU’s original proposal to apply it to every country.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said the agreement will show Russian President Vladimir Putin that Europe remained united in the face of Moscow’s latest gas cuts. “You will not split us,” Habeck said.

Hungary, heavily dependent on Russian energy, was the only country that opposed the deal, two EU officials said.

Gazprom blamed its latest reduction on needing to halt the operation of a turbine – a reason dismissed by EU energy chief Kadri Simson, who called the move “politically motivated.”

Simson said the agreement should ensure countries save enough gas to survive an average winter if Russia fully cut supplies now, but an unusually cold winter would require more severe measures.

Russia supplied 40% of EU gas before it invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, in what Moscow calls a “special military operation”.

His brother, Isaac, who shared video and photos from his hospital bed, said the former governor has undergone two major surgical operations within five months, one for his neck which happened in February and another one for his back.

According to him, the neck and back problem resulted from the attack on the former governor during the 2018 Ekiti governorship election.

Man kills Dad over land in Nasarawa

A man identified as Badejo Idowu was on Monday July 26, stabbed to death by his first son, Tunde Badejo, over a land belonging to the family.

Daily Trust reported that the incident occurred at Masaka, Karu LGA of Nasarawa State.

Prior to carrying out the murder, Tunde had been pestering his father for a portion of the land for over a year.

The deceased’s wife, Madam Tolani Badejo told the publication that her husband asked Tunde to give him time to apportion the land fairly among other family members.

Badejo said;

“He had been on my husband’s neck for the land since last year. So during their last argument on Monday, he pulled out a knife and stabbed his father several times on the head, neck, chest, hands and legs which killed him. I raised alarm and he fled.”

Second son of the deceased, Ayomide Badejo, said the matter had been reported to the police while his father’s remains had been deposited in a mortuary.

Monkeypox emergency could last months, with window closing to stop spread, Scientists say.

Scientists advising the World Health Organization (WHO) on monkeypox say the window is closing to stop its spread, as cases double every two weeks, raising concerns that it will take several months for the outbreak to peak.

WHO in Europe says it has forecast over 27,000 monkeypox cases in 88 countries by Aug. 2, up from 17,800 cases in nearly 70 countries as at press time.

The scientists say there is likely to be sustained transmission for several months and possibly longer.

“We have to get in front of this,” said Anne Rimoin, an epidemiology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles to Reuters.

“It’s clear the window of opportunity for doing so is closing,” added Rimoin, a member of the WHO expert committee on monkeypox that met last week to determine whether the outbreak constituted a global health emergency.

Despite a majority of committee members voting against calling Monkeypox a global health emergency, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus still went ahead to declare it an emergency.

After such a declaration countries must urgently increase rate of vaccination, testing, isolation for those infected and contact tracing, global health experts said.

Monkeypox has been a globally neglected public health problem in parts of Africa for decades, but cases began to be reported outside countries where it is endemic in May.

It generally causes mild to moderate symptoms, including fever, fatigue and the hallmark painful skin lesions, that resolve within a few weeks. Five people have died in the current outbreak, all of them in Africa.

It spreads mainly in men who have sex with men, putting sexual health clinics on alert for new cases.

Prior to carrying out the murder, Tunde had been pestering his father for a portion of the land for over a year.

The deceased’s wife, Madam Tolani Badejo told the publication that her husband asked Tunde to give him time to apportion the land fairly among other family members.

Nigeria may co-host the 2025 African cup of nations – Amaju Pinnick.

Nigeria and Benin Republic are likely co-host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick, has said.

Guinea has been awarded the hosting rights for 2025 but Africa’s football ruling body, CAF may likely strip Guinea of the hosting right of the biennial African football showpiece.

According to Pinnick, CAF is on course to withdraw the hosting right from the West African country and Nigeria is working on a bid with Benin Republic.

“We are putting a bid together for a co-hosting of the tournament with the Benin Republic,” Pinnick told Complete sports.

“The Minister of Sports has given his endorsement on the bidding.

“It is high time Nigeria hosted an international tournament because there are many advantages attached to hosting of such competitions.

“There are many countries bidding for the competition; we are confident of getting the nod from Caf.

“We are working with the ministry of sports to ensure that Nigeria gets the hosting right.”

Since the inception of AFCON, Nigeria have hosted the rest of the continent on two occasions.

The first time was in 1980 while the second time was in 2000 when the country co-hosted with Ghana .
