Katsina REC blames low voters registration on insecurity and network suspension.

Alhaji Jibril Zarewa, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in President Muhammadu Buhari’s home state, Katsina, has blamed the low number of registered voters in Katsina State on the suspension of telecommunications services in 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) due to insecurity.

Addressing journalists at the state’s INEC office, Zarewa disclosed that the decision to shutdown telecommunication services was part of moves by security operatives to clampdown on bandits in the state following the incessant attacks recorded in the area.

He said;

“Like some other sister states, Niger, Kaduna, Zamfara, and sokoto, we (Katsina) had our own share of security challenges, particularly, in the frontline LGAs and some more.

“The state government at a time found it necessary to suspend telecommunication network. Therefore we had to suspend voters registration for the duration of that suspension.

“That’s why we suspended the registration of voters in those 17 LGAs out of 34, which means at a time, we were not doing registration for half of the state, made up of the Local Governments of Jibia, Batsari, Kurfi, Dutsinma, Danmusa, Safana, Matazu, Musawa Kafur Malumfashi, Danja, Bakori, Sabuwa, Funtua, Dandume, Faskari and Kankara. These mentioned areas are in the outskirts of Rugu forest where most of the bandits are alleged to be hiding.

“That was why at a time, we were moving with states that has lesser population or lesser number of registered voters. Because if you check, Katsina State is number 4 by population in Nigeria; after Kano, Lagos, Kaduna, then is Katsina. It was also number 4 for voters registration after Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina.

“Then later another reason, people were rarely coming out after the suspension was lifted.”

Zarewa however noted that the state has been witnessing a surge in PVC registration lately.

He added;

“I want to say and put on record that the Katsina Emirate Council last week did something very robustly, by engaging the relevant stakeholders and putting more impetus with district and village ward heads to go round and mobilize people to come out for registration.

“As a result, from Friday last week and even this week, we have seen the jump over what we use to experience in the past. We have seen a lot of people turning out for the registration.

“If you look at the review of the records of registration done within the week, you can see that Katsina is now number 23 in registration. So we believe that we will do better these few days that remains before closing.”

I feel unconcerned about Michael Johnson’s comment about my daughter – Tobi Amusan’s father says.

The father of world champion and record holder Tobi Amusan, has urged Nigerians to ignore comments made by American track legend Michael Johnson after his daughter’s heroics at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

Earlier this week, Amusan won her semifinal heat when she crossed the finish line at a time of 12.12 seconds, smashing the previous best of 12.20sec set by American Kendra Harrison in 2016.

But Michael Johnson, who won four Olympic gold medals and 8 World Championships gold medals in the span of his career, questioned her accuracy and timing.

This led to backlash from Nigerians on Twitter, who accused him of ‘black racism’

In a chat with The PUNCH, Amusan’s father stated that the American’s comments should be ignored.

“You know the western world and how they behave, you should know what they are,” Kehinde said.

“I feel unconcerned about what he said after the race because God has done what He needs to do. I don’t mind whatever anybody says about the timing, I feel that is how the western world is but they are not God.

“So, he is entitled to his opinion. I won’t take it as an offence because I just believe that’s what these blacks do.”

Also, Amusan’s youth coach, Ayodele Solaja, who coached the 25-year-old while she was a student at the Our Lady of Apostles, Ijebu Ode, said Johnson and other Americans were envious of Amosun, following her feat.

“Everyone in the US, including Michael Johnson, are just wallowing in envy because of the achievement of Tobi,” Solaja told The PUNCH.

“Tobi has done what no Nigerian could do in the World Championship.”

Members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have backed their colleagues in the Senate over the call for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari over widespread insecurity in the country.

Recall that the senators gave Buhari six weeks to resolve insecurity issue in the country or face impeachment proceedings.

The meeting was chaired by Senate Minority Leader, Philip Aduda (PDP, FCT), with more than 20 lawmakers in attendance.

He stated that members of the House will also present a formal impeachment notice against the president if the general insecurity in the country is not addressed.

Delta: Ijaw communities protest schoolteachers’ shortage

The Ijaw communities in Delta State have protested the shortage of teachers in their community schools, calling on Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to as a matter of urgency absorb community teachers.

The protesters who carried placards of different inscriptions barricaded the Government House’s gate and urged the government to incorporate the community teachers into the state workforce

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, the President of Ijaw Elite Forum, Mr  Ganagana Francis, stated that the reason for the peaceful demonstration was to set the educational standards in riverine communities.

Ganagana decried the dearth of teaching staff in riverine communities, saying that in most schools in urban areas there were over 130 teachers in a school but only a principal and a teacher could be seen in riverine areas.

He called on the government to employ the community teachers that were being paid by the PTA in order to improve the standard of education in the areas.

Other representatives of the various concerned riverine communities who spoke at the protest said many schools in the riverine areas do not have more than two or three teachers who were employed by the state government.

The representatives include; chairman of Tamigbe community, Mr. Stephen Akameyai; the chairman of Esanma community in the Bomadi Local Government Area, Barr. Theophilus Omoro and their counterpart in charge of Bulu-Elebiri community, Patani LGA, Derek Edih.

“We are calling on the state government to consider our community teachers and ensure they are incorporated into the state workforce.

“For the state government to impact positively on the children of riverine communities in the area of driving its educational policy, government needed to employ the community teachers, since they understood the terrain much better,” the representatives said.

Addressing the protesters, the state Chairman of Post-Primary Education Board, Mrs. Christiana Etaluku, said she had already informed the State Governor on the importance of considering community teachers in the recruitment exercise.

She assured the community that the board would intensify monitoring of teachers in riverine areas as part of strategy to ensure that teachers in the areas took their job seriously.

‘I’m nothing without you’, teary lawyer tells mum.

In a move to show deep appreciation to his supportive mum, an unidentified new lawyer in a viral video, prostrated before his mother in the profession’s full robe.

The new lawyer got emotional at the call-to-bar ceremony of the Nigerian Law School held in Abuja on Wednesday as he prostrated before his mother and tearfully thanked her.

The ceremony signifies the induction of new lawyers into the legal profession after their Bar final examinations held in May.

As he grabbed at her feet, he tearfully said, “I’m nothing without you. I’m grateful for you every day. Without you and God, I’m nothing.”

His mum, however, kept saying “It is well” while asking him to stand up from prostration.

He captioned the post, “My KING MAKER! My QUEEN. I’ll forever HONOR YOU MOM, no matter how big or how famous I get! You’re my source and life, I don’t care whoever is looking, Orisa mi  E Ku aduro Ti”

No fewer than 1,507 graduating students from the Nigerian Law School were called to bar at the event organized by the Body of Benchers.

Ebonyi debunks alleged killing of woman by herdsmen.

Ebonyi State Government, on Thursday, debunked allegations on social media that herdsmen were involved in the killing of a young lady in the Onicha Local Government Area of the state.

The body of the young lady, said to hail from Amaporo village, was found along a bush path between Agbebor, Isu and Onicha-Igboeze communities on Wednesday.

The situation caused tension in the area as the youths raised a search party to hunt for the killers.

However, their efforts were not successful as the killers were said to have allegedly escaped.

Pictures of the slain lady soon flooded the social media with unconfirmed allegations that herdsmen were responsible for the attacks.

In the pictures, the victim could be seen lying lifeless on a pile of firewood with her throat slit.

However, the state government in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Uchenna Orji said there was no evidence so far to link the murder to herdsmen adding that there were no herdsmen residing in the area.

He said the victim was believed to have been attacked by criminal elements in the area while she was returning from a neighbouring village.

Orji said, “Our attention has been drawn to a trending social media post over a young girl found dead in a village in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and the impressions created over the circumstances of her death.

“While the state government condemns the ugly incident as unacceptable brutal murder of an innocent citizen by heartless criminals, it is imperative to note that contrary to the claims circulating in social media that Fulani herders were responsible for her gruesome murder, the community has not seen anything linking her death with the Fulani herdsmen, moreso there is no herders’ camp in the area”

“The unfortunate incident is the handiwork of yet-to-be-identified criminals who attacked and killed the deceased on her way, through a track road, back from where she went to process cassava at Agbegbor village in Isu community, Onicha Local Government Area.

“The community together with the security agencies has declared manhunt on the perpetrators. The State Government sends its condolences to the victim’s family and assures them that government will not leave any stone unturned in unmasking the killers of the young girl,” the commissioner said.

Meanwhile, the Ebonyi Command of the Nigeria Police Force, on Thursday, confirmed the incident.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Chris Anyanwu, the lady’s underwear was missing raising suspicion by the villagers that she was raped before being killed.

“We have commenced investigation into the incident. People are alleging that she was raped because they couldn’t find her underwear”

“But only a forensic analysis can reveal if anything like that happened,” he said.

Delivering ruling, Justice Adeyemi Ajayi ordered that the defendants shall not leave the Federal Capital Territory, and should they want to, they would have to seek clearance from the court or have their bail revoked.

Parents file $25 million racial discrimination lawsuit against Sesame Street theme park after four characters ‘ignored their daughter during parade because she’s black’.

An American family is suing a Sesame Street-themed amusement park for $25 million over claims of racial discrimination, after multiple costumed characters allegedly ignored their five-year-old daughter during a meet-and-greet event because she is ‘black.’

The suit was filed in a federal court in Philadelphia against SeaWorld Parks, the owner of the Sesame Place, for ‘pervasive and appalling race discrimination.’

The lawsuit, which seeks class action status, alleges four employees dressed as Sesame Street characters ignored Quinton Burns, his daughter Kennedi Burns and other black guests during the meet-and-greet on June 18.

‘Just looking at her face, it makes me want to cry every time I see it,’ Quinton Burns said during a press conference Wednesday.

The lawsuit comes after a viral video showing two other black girls from New York apparently being snubbed by Rosita during a parade at the park in Langhorne, outside Philadelphia last month.

Sesame Place apologized in a statement for that incident and explained that the actor inside the Rosita suit simply couldn’t see their daughter due to the costume’s limited field of vison.

The furor triggered more families to come forward with similar experiences.

The lawsuit says ‘SeaWorld’s performers readily engaged with numerous similarly situated white customers.’

During a press conference held Wednesday, one of the family’s attorneys, Malcolm Ruff, called for transparency from SeaWorld and for the company to compensate the Burns family.

‘She was ignored amongst a sea of other young white children who were able to interact, give hugs, high fives,’ Ruff said.

The park also said the mascot likely did not see the girls due to limited vision in the costume’s unwieldy mask, which ‘sometimes make it difficult to see at lower levels’ leading actors to occasionally ‘miss hug requests from guests.’

‘Kennedi was forced to experience racism at the age of 5. This is unacceptable and we will not stand by and let this continue,’ Ruff continued.

Sesame Place responded to the lawsuit in a statement sent to Eyewitness News, saying: ‘We will review the lawsuit filed on behalf of Mr. Burns. We look forward to addressing that claim through the established legal process. We are committed to deliver an inclusive, equitable and entertaining experience for all our guests.”

The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus reportedly asked for a meeting with leadership at a Sesame Street theme park after video showing a costumed character waving off two six-year-old black girls during a parade went viral.

Jodi Brown, the mother of one of the girls, first shared the nine-second video clip last weekend, showing the Sesame Place character Rosita high-fiving a white child and woman, then gesturing ‘no’ and walking away from the two black girls who had their arms out for hugs.

Black Caucus members are seeking a meeting with the theme park’s general manager Cathy Valeriano to ‘discuss the changes, plans of action, and training the park plans to implement,’ Fox News reporter Chad Pergram said on Saturday.

The caucus said: ‘Over the past week, we’ve seen multiple glaring examples of racism coming from the park, including the viral video in which two beautiful little black girls were blatantly rejected by a character they idolized while white children were embraced.’

Brown has claimed that Rosita immediately hugged a white child after snubbing her daughter and niece, though those events are not seen in the video.

On Saturday, Brown appeared on MSNBC and said she rejected the apologies that had been issued by Sesame Place, the theme park outside Philadelphia.

‘I don’t believe it was genuine, I believe they were just putting out statements due to how viral the video has gone,’ Brown said.

Brown’s attorney B’Ivory Lamarr appeared alongside the mother and reiterated his threat to sue the theme park and demand that the unidentified employee in the Rosita costume be fired.

In a statement on Sunday, theme park officials called the now viral moment a ‘misunderstanding,’ saying the mascot likely did not see the girls due to limited vision in the costume’s unwieldy mask.

‘Our brand, our park and our employees stand for inclusivity and equality in all forms,’ the statement read. ‘That is what Sesame Place is all about and we do not tolerate any behaviors in our parks that are contrary to that commitment.’

‘We also are, and always have been, committed to making sure every family and every child has the best possible experience at our parks and we are incredibly disappointed when that does not happen.’

‘We spoke to the family and extended our apologies and invited them back for a special meet-and-greet opportunity with our characters,’ the statement read.

The park said the actor portraying Rosita – who was not named – ‘did not intentionally ignore the girls and is devastated about the misunderstanding.’

The statement alleged Rosita was gesturing ‘no’ to another guest who had requested they hold hold their child for a photo, ‘which is not permitted.’

The park also said the mascot likely did not see the girls due to limited vision in the costume’s unwieldy mask, which ‘sometimes make it difficult to see at lower levels’ leading actors to occasionally ‘miss hug requests from guests.’

‘We apologize to these guests for not delivering the experience they expected and we commit to do our best to earn their and all guests’ visit and support,’ the statement concluded.

Impeachment of Buhari is belated – Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani has stated that the impeachment of President Muhammad Buhari is long overdue .

Sani made the statement after opposition lawmakers on Wednesday, July 27, stated that they would commence impeachment proceedings against Buhari over the declining security in the country.

“impeachment of the President is belated, it should have started months ago, NASS has the constitutional right to summon the President” Sani told Arise TV

He said that the opposition “may not be able to get required number to impeach Buhari, because members of the ruling party are hiding their faces from such actions.”

“The opposition is on a moral high ground. Nigerians may see them as their voice and representative of the plights of the Nigerian people.” He added

Sani then added that security challenges are not about money as INEC and defence agencies are well-funded.

“in the last 7 years, over N4.2 trillion was appropriated and funded, but this has not translated to security”, adding “It is clear to us that either the funding has not been used for the purchase of hardwares or we are buying the wrong hardware for the situation on the ground.” he said

“This protest should continue and we believe if the govt is sensitive to the yearnings of Nigerians, it should solve this issue.”

“Their protest is a struggle to save public education, to save the future of Nigeria and to save the futures of the youth who cannot afford private universities or to go abroad.”

“We have a budget of N16 trillion, if the government can fund subsidy with N7 trillion, they can allocate more of the budget for education.”

“ASUU have articulated their demands to reactivate and upgrade Nigeria’s university system; refusing to address these issues will come with a lot of repercussions for the whole country.”

Ijebu Ode residents hold rally for Tobi Amusan

Hundreds of youths and women in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State held a rally in celebration of hurdler Tobi Amusan, who on Monday became the first-ever Nigerian athletics world champion and record holder, The PUNCH reports.

Ijebu Ode-born Amusan, 25, ran a time of 12.12secs – shaving almost a tenth of a second off the previous world record held by American Keni Harrison (12.20secs) – in the semi-finals of the World Championships in Oregon, USA, before going on to win gold in the final at the Hayward Field stadium.

The Registrar, Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu Ode, Adeeko Lateef, said Amusan’s former training mates joined up with the students of the school on Monday, prior to their National Examination Council exams to recite the national anthem.

The rally was held in front of the roundabout in front of the school.

“Tobi’s (Amusan) feat put the school’s name on the global map of the world,” Lateef told The PUNCH.

“She finished from the school in 2011 and was part of our relay team back then. She was a quiet girl who always kept to herself but on Monday we had to join the rest of the town in celebrating her feat.

“All the students see her as an inspiration because as small as she was back then, nobody gave her a chance to succeed, but she defied the struggles to excel.”

Adigun Kemisola, a petty trader at the Dipo Dina Stadium, said Amusan’s victory changed the mood around the sporting arena, saying the traders cashed in to make brisk business.

“She (Amusan) is fondly called ‘shanko’ because of her stature, but she always gave her best each time she came to train here. The entire Ijebu Ode has been in festive mood, her pictures were carried around the stadium and some of the traders who know her closely posted her picture at the doorway of their shops to attract customers.

Oladayo Adefisoye, a boxing coach, said the rally was held to ensure that the Ogun State Government and the Federal Government honoured Amusan properly.

“She deserves more than a MON award. We all saw how Laycon, who won the 2020 Big Brother Naija Lockdown edition, was rewarded with cash and awarded honours by the Ogun State Government,” Adefisoye told The PUNCH.

“She was the smallest in training but the most active. I have never been this proud as an Ijebu Ode man because I was part of the coaches who ensured that she stayed focused on her training, alongside coach Ayodele Solaja.” Solaja, who said he scouted Amusan from OLASS in 2009, told The PUNCH, “I have an academy where I train young athletes in Ijebu Ode and for two years I never noticed her, until she won her inter-house sports race in 2009. It was at that point I started noticing her and focusing on her.

“This was an athlete who started out as a footballer, but because of her small stature, she switched to sprint and there was her glory,” Solaja added.

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor ‘very close to finalising a deal worth £130m for a huge boxing rematch.

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are reportedly close to agreeing a deal to stage a sensational rematch.

This is coming nearly five years since Mayweather defeated the UFC superstar in a boxing clash by securing a tenth round TKO victory in Las Vegas back in August 2017.

The Sun has now reported that Mayweather is willing to once again put his unbeaten record on the line in a money-spinning match against McGregor.

Mayweather has not fought professionally in the ring since his victory over the Irishman.

It’s said the two parties are close to cutting a deal after Mayweather offered McGregor $157.9million (£130m) for a rematch.

McGregor is only willing to fight Mayweather if the American’s 50-0 undefeated record is on the line.

The fight would be at 155lbs, meaning McGregor would have to cut some weight after he has reportedly tipped the scales at over 190lbs since breaking his leg.

It’s said that the Mayweather would see the rematch with McGregor as the ‘end of the Mayweather era’ and ‘start of the Gervonta Davis era’.

Mayweather is looking at the bout to take place next March in the Middle East, with a potential fight between Davis and Ryan Garcia as an undercard fight.

McGregor hinted at a potential rematch with Mayweather in a now deleted post he made on his Instagram account last month.

Alongside a picture of their first fight, he hinted at the pair facing off one more time as he wrote: ‘I accept.’

Call to bar ceremony moved from Abuja Law School after terrorists’ threat.

The Nigerian Law School has moved the venue of the call to bar ceremony from the school’s headquarters in Bwari to Airport Road, Abuja.

In a tweet shared on his handle, the Director General of the school, Prof Hayatu Isa Ciroma, disclosed that the new venue is the Secretariat of the Body of Benchers behind the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.

“The Director-General has directed to notify candidates of the change of the Call to the Bar venue from the Nigerian Law School Bwari to the Body of Benchers Secretariat along the Airport Road, Abuja by 1pm tomorrow 27th July, 2022,” he wrote in a tweet.

The organizers advised friends and family members of candidates to stay away from the venue as only the candidates would be cleared to enter. The Body of Benchers in August 2021 called to the bar a total of 4,350 new lawyers.

Although the reason for the change of venue was not given, it may not be unconnected to the heightened level of insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Recall that few days ago, a captain and two soldiers attached to the Presidential Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army were killed in an ambush by terrorists. The soldiers were reportedly ambushed after they visited the Nigeria Law School following a distress call from the authorities of the school.

The school management was said to have alerted that terrorists had dropped a letter indicating an imminent attack on the school.
