U.S. court grants Justice Dept expedited appeal in Trump case

U.S. appeals court has granted the Justice Department’s request to expedite its appeal of a lower court order appointing a special master to review records the FBI seized from former President Donald Trump’s mar-a-lago, Florida estate.

The Wednesday October 5 decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit to fast-track the government’s appeal is a setback for Trump, who had opposed the request.

Last week, the Justice Department had asked the 11th Circuit to address concerns it still has with U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon’s appointment of Senior Judge Raymond Dearie, who is tasked with reviewing more than 11,000 records the FBI found inside Mar-a-Lago in order to remove anything that may be privileged.

Judge Cannon’s order blocks the Justice Department from relying on those records for its ongoing criminal investigation until Dearie’s review is complete.

In its filing, the Justice Department said this prohibition is hampering its probe, and that it needs to be able to examine non-classified records that may have been stored in close proximity to classified ones.

Those non-classified records, the department said, “may shed light” on how the documents were transferred to or stored at the Mar-a-Lago estate, and who might have accessed them.

Trump is facing a total of 19 legal actions – about half of which allege improper conduct during his presidency.

Most of the cases fall under three themes: financial wrongdoings that made him more money; his role in the January 6 2021 insurrection; and his alleged interference in the 2020 election.

Trump has denied wrongdoing in most of these cases. He has filed motions to dismiss several of them and has filed countersuits in some cases.

Police officer caught on camera beating a teenager

A video of an Oklahoma police officer beating a 17-year-old boy and driving his knee to his neck during an arrest is currently trending online.

Footage of Sunday’s “attack” shows the deputy and other officers trying to restrain the teen on the ground at the Tulsa State Fair.

As the police officers struggled to place the teen in handcuffs, the deputy punches him, then pushes his knee hard into the boy’s neck as onlookers screamed “He’s a f—king kid, y’all!”

The deputy then drags the teen who has seemingly gone limp across the asphalt with his face to the ground, before putting him in handcuff.

According to police, the teen was drunk and acting belligerent while waiting in line for a ride. Several people complained and police responded.

The teen, who is white, began mouthing off and, according to cops, using racist language toward a black deputy. That’s when all the trouble began.

Tulsa County Sheriff’s Captain Mike Moore backed up the actions of his officers, reportedly saying “the deputies were required to use the force necessary” when the teen “continued to resist and continued to fight deputies.”

The Sheriff’s Office is now reviewing the matter.

Elon Musk has shared a ‘peace plan’ for the Russia-Ukraine war to end

Billionaire, Elon Musk has shared a ‘peace plan’ for the Russia-Ukraine war to end. But his proposal was quickly met with backlash—including from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The world’s richest man and Tesla founder on Monday, October 3, suggested elections in the annexed regions under United Nations supervision. “Russia leaves if this is the will of the people,” he said.

He also said Crimea, the Ukranian city annexed by Russia in 2014 originally belonged to Russia until a ‘mistake’ by former Soviet Union premier, Nikita Khrushchev.

He called for the Crimea to formally become part of Russia. Then, he said Crimea’s water supply should be assured. And lastly, he argued, Ukraine should remain neutral rather than joining NATO.

Musk then shared a Twitter poll asking his followers to give their opinion on his suggestion. “Crimea formally part of Russia, as it has been since 1783 (until Khrushchev’s mistake),”

He also opined that Ukraine should remain neutral and asked followers to reply with their recommendations in “yes and no”.

“This is highly likely to be the outcome in the end ‘ just a question of how many die before then,” Musk said. He added that the war could turn nuclear although it is unlikely.

Less than three hours after his first tweet, Zelensky responded to Musk with his own poll, mocking Musk’s plan. “Which @elonmusk do you like more?” Zelensky asked. The two choices? One who supports Ukraine, and one who supports Russia.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Andrij Melnyk, also piled on Musk in atypical fashion for a diplomat. “F**k off is my very diplomatic reply to you,” he wrote. Melnyk later added that no Ukrainian would ever buy a Tesla, telling Musk “good luck.”

However, Times correspondent Christopher Miller replied to Musk’s tweet, referring to the Ukrainian Independence Referendum, when Ukrainians were asked to vote on the country’s independence.

In March, Elon Musk had publicly challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin to a “single combat” for Ukraine. Taking to Twitter, the SpaceX CEO wrote, “I hereby challenge Vladimir Putin to single combat”.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the annexation of four regions- Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kheria and claimed “this is the will of millions of people.”

Trump sues CNN claiming defamation, seeks $475 million in punitive damages

Former U.S. president, Donald Trump has sued CNN for defamation, seeking $475 million in punitive damages and claiming that the network had carried out a “campaign of libel and slander” against him.

Trump claims in his lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Monday, October 3 that CNN had used its considerable influence as a top news organization to defeat him politically.

Trump, a Republican, claims in the 29-page lawsuit that CNN had a long track record of criticizing him but had ramped up its attacks in recent months because the network feared that he would run again for president in 2024.

“As a part of its concerted effort to tilt the political balance to the left, CNN has tried to taint the Plaintiff with a series of ever-more scandalous, false, and defamatory labels of ‘racist,’ ‘Russian lackey,’ ‘insurrectionist,’ and ultimately ‘Hitler,'” the lawsuit claims.

The lawsuit lists several instances in which CNN appeared to compare Trump to Hitler, including a January 2022 special report by host Fareed Zakaria that included footage of the German dictator.

Trump, who in 2020 lost a re-election bid to Democrat Joe Biden, has not said whether he would seek re-election.

The lawsuit comes as Trump faces considerable legal woes, including a criminal investigation by the U.S. Justice Department for retaining government records at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida after leaving office in January 2021.

Somalia government says it killed al Shabaab co-founder

Somalia’s government said late on Sunday, October 2, that it had killed Abdullahi Nadir, one of the co-founders of Islamist militant group al Shabaab, in an operation with international partners.

The country’s information ministry said that the operation that killed Nadir happened on Saturday, October 1.

It said he was al-Shabab’s chief prosecutor and was in line to replace the group’s leader, Ahmed Diriye, who is sick.

“His death is a thorn removed from the Somali nation,” the statement said.

“The government is grateful to the Somali people and international friends whose cooperation facilitated the killing of this leader who was an enemy of the Somali nation.”

In recent weeks, Somali security forces have touted gains made against the al-Qaeda-linked group while fighting alongside local self-defence groups.

But al-Shabab has continued to conduct deadly raids, including two last Friday that killed at least 16 people.

A baby girl believed to be about three months old has been found abandoned in KwaZulu Natal Province, South Africa, along with a note written by the mother.

According to a statement released by Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) on Monday, October 3, 2022, the baby was discovered by a man who was picking mangoes at the base of an embankment next to a stream in Dawncrest.

I know this looks bad but I had no option. The system is fragile and we can’t even abort safely anymore. Hospitals have strict rules.” the note read.

Prince William is now his father’s landlord and will get £700K a year from King Charles’ beloved Highgrove home

40-year-old Prince William is now King Charles’ new landlord and will be collecting hundreds of thousands of pounds in rent from his father.

The Sun reported that Prince William has taken over Duchy of Cornwall and its £345million property portfolio including King Charles’s beloved Highgrove home.

The 128,000 acres of land which netted a £21million income last year, was passed from Charles to his son when he became king.

This means the 73-year-old King must pay up to £700,000 a year to honour a long lease he signed on his favourite home.

The Duchy bought Highgrove, in Gloucestershire, in 1980 and it has been since been transformed into a family home by the new King.

The property portfolio passed down to the new Prince of Wales also includes HMP Dartmoor as well as the Oval cricket ground in South London.

A source told the publication “The King has a long lease and pays rent on Highgrove House and surrounding land.”

The King retreated to Highgrove for a day after his mother died last month. It is considered Charles’s favourite home and is a short drive from Queen Consort Camilla’s private house in Wiltshire.

Arrest warrant issued for Big Brother US winner Mike ‘Boogie’ Malin

A California judge has issued an arrest warrant for Big Brother US winner Mike “Boogie” Malin.

The judge who revoked Malin’s probation, issued the arrest warrant after he failed to show up in court for a hearing related to his felony stalking case. He also set Malin’s bail at $20k after revoking his probation.

TMZ reported that Malin was due in court two weeks ago for a “proof of live-in program” hearing but he didn’t show up. His public defender took the blame and the judge moved the court date to Wednesday September 28.

The reality show star also failed to show up after being given a second chance.

Malin, who won season 7 of the reality series also failed to pick up his calls after the judge ordered the public defender to call him.

Malin pled no contest to felony stalking last year in a case involving his former ‘BB’ buddy Dr. Will Kirby, and he was sentenced to 2 years probation and ordered to pay Will more than $44k.

Malin’s latest public defender told the judge his client doesn’t have the money to pay the restitution.

R. Kelly ordered to pay victims at least $300K in restitution

A federal judge ordered disgraced R&B superstar R. Kelly to pay more than $300,000 to one of his victims in a decades-long scheme to use his fame to s*xually abuse young fans.

A restitution order by U.S. District Judge Ann Connelly that was still being finalized is meant to cover the cost of treatment for herpes and psychotherapy.

The victim, referred to only by a pseudonym, Jane, has accused the jailed Kelly of giving her the *exually transmitted disease during one of their encounters.

Kelly, whose lawyer claims he only has 28,000 dollars in his account, could also pay tens of thousands of dollars more for herpes treatment and counseling for a second victim once the final tally is calculated.

The Grammy-winning, multiplatinum-selling songwriter appeared at the hearing in federal court in Brooklyn via video from a lockup in Chicago on Wednesday, September 28, and only spoke to exchange greetings with the judge and to turn down an offer to say more.

None of the victims were in attendance.Donnelly sentenced Kelly in June to 30 years in prison, after a jury convicted him of racketeering and other charges.

Prosecutors said the 55-year-old Kelly exploited his stardom and wealth over more than two decades to lure women and underage girls into his orbit for s*x.

Kelly was also convicted last month in Chicago on separate charges of child pornography and luring underage girls for s*x.

He is awaiting sentencing in that case, and also faces various state charges in Illinois and Minnesota.

On Wednesday, after ordering Kelly to pay $300,000, Judge Donnelly denied prosecutors’ requests to compensate Jane for lost income, and provide any compensation to a third victim known as Sonja.

“Though our nation is going through challenges, especially on security, these challenges are temporary and do not define us.

We are defined by the greatness of the Nigerian people in our diversity, strength, ingenuity and resilience.

“We shall overcome all the challenges. A time is coming when we shall look at this period in retrospect and give thanks to the most high for the stormy waters we have waded through and the triumphs we have recorded over the challenges that look so huge and gargantuan today.”

US court jails suspended aide of Governor Dapo Abiodun for five years for fraud

Abidemi Rufai, the suspended aide of Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for fraud by a US court.

Rufai had attempted to use stolen identities to steal nearly $2.4 million from the United States government, including approximately $500,000 in pandemic-related unemployment benefits.

According to the statement, Rufai admitted a long history of using stolen identities to defraud U.S. disaster programs, including aid for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and file fraudulent U.S. tax returns.

The 45-year-old convict who pleaded guilty to the charges in May, was said to have succeeded in defrauding 12 US agencies of $600,000 paid out into bank accounts controlled by him.

Rufai also defrauded the Small Business Administration (SBA) by attempting to obtain Economic Injury Disaster loans (EIDL) tied to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Between April 8, 2020, and June 26, 2020, he submitted 19 fraudulent EIDL applications.

SBA paid out $10,000 based on the applications. Between 2017 and 2020, Rufai attempted to obtain more than $1.7 million in IRS tax refunds by submitting 675 false claims. The IRS paid out $90,877 on these claims.

The largest amount of fraud was committed against the Washington State Employment Security Department, which paid out $350,763 in fraudulent pandemic unemployment claims to accounts controlled by Rufai.

Rufai also submitted fraudulent pandemic unemployment claims in at least 17 other states.

From the plea agreement with the prosecution, Mr Rufai agreed to pay full restitution of $604,260 to the defrauded agencies.

The trial judge, Benjamin H. Settle reportedly said;

“The motivation was greed, unrestrained greed, and a callousness towards those who have suffered.”

Though Mr Rufai agreed to pay full restitution of $604,260 to the defrauded agencies as revealed in a plea agreement with the prosecution, the US Department of Justice said he “has not fully cooperated with efforts to identify and forfeit assets that could be used for restitution.”

“My father will be King so you better watch out” Prince George, 9, reportedly told classmates according to royal expert

Prince George knows he will one day be king and made this known in a cheeky comeback to a classmate who crossed him, a royal expert has claimed.

The eldest son of Prince William and Kate Middleton told his schoolmate that his father would be King and that they “better watch out”, according to royal author Katie Nicholl.

In her book The New Royals, Nicholl claimed George, 9, and his siblings, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4, were being raised with an understanding of the monarchy and a “sense of duty”.

She added that while George has been told he will one day be monarch, the Prince and Princess of Wales are trying not to weigh him down with too much responsibilities too soon.

Nicholl wrote:

“They are raising their children, particularly Prince George, with an awareness of who he is and the role he will inherit, but they are keen not to weigh them down with a sense of duty.

“George understands he will one day be king and as a little boy sparred with friends at school, outdoing his peers with the killer line: ‘My dad will be king so you better watch out’.”

Russia to expel Japanese diplomat arrested by Putin’s secret police on suspicion of ‘spying on China’

The Russian government is planning to expel a detained Japanese diplomat who was reportedly caught ‘red-handed’ trying to buy state secrets and for spying on a ‘country in the Asia-Pacific region’.

Motoki Tatsunori, the Japanese Consul General in Vladivostok, was arrested for allegedly soliciting ‘restricted’ information about an unnamed country in the Asia-Pacific region – which is speculated to be China.

The FSB, the KGB´s successor agency, released a statement about the matter, accusing Tatsunori of gathering secret information on Russia and ordered him to leave the country within 48 hours.

The statement said:

‘A Japanese diplomat was detained red-handed while receiving, in exchange for financial reward, restricted information about Russia´s cooperation with another country in the Asia-Pacific region.’

The FSB also accused the diplomat of seeking out information on ‘the impact of Western sanctions’ on the surrounding Primoriye region, according to news agencies.

King Charles’ PR team faces axe in Buckingham Palace as up to 100 staff are warned of redundancy

King Charles’ entire press office at Clarence House have reportedly been told their jobs are at risk as a result of his move to Buckingham Palace.

According to Mail Online, they are among up to 100 distraught staff including those in research and finance sent letters in the past few days warning them of redundancy as a result of the former Prince of Wales’s accession to the throne.

The report said that they have previously been told that only a process of consultation would legally have to begin as a result of the Queen’s death.

Now dozens have been specifically told their jobs are under threat as the process of merging the King’s former household at Clarence House with the existing team at Buckingham Palace begins.

The move has left many employees, some of whom have worked for the royals for several decades, upset and concerned.

Palace sources said the potential redundancies were ‘sadly inevitable’ as a result of the change in reign.

Buckingham Palace, which employs more than 1,000 staff, is not affected as employees work for the sovereign.

The new Prince of Wales – Prince William – already has his own team in place at Kensington Palace, leaving the loyal Clarence House team caught between ‘a rock and a hard place’.

‘Unfortunately, the process of integration means that the roles at Clarence House, the household of the former Prince of Wales, are no longer required,’ a royal aide explained.

Senior officials say they are trying to find as many employees as they can new roles at Buckingham Palace, although they say they are ‘mindful of the head count’ at the tax payer-funded institution, and clearly not everyone can be accommodated.
