54 killed in Mexico as truck carrying migrants crashes

Fifty four people have been confirmed killed with more than 100 injured after a truck carrying migrants, mostly from Central America, overturned in southern Mexico on Thursday, local authorities report.

The incident happened in Mexico’s Chiapas state, a border town with Guatemala, when the truck carrying dozens of migrants tried to enter Mexico, with the intention of moving on to the United States.

It is not immediately clear what caused the crash or why the victims were crammed into the truck but officials say many people who embark on the dangerous migrations from Central American countries like Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, do so because of violence, corruption, food insecurity, and a lack of economic opportunity have left many with no other choice.

The dangerous journey, often organized by people smugglers, travels north through Mexico to reach the US border, the officials say.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who confirmed the accident, said some of the people who died included foreign nationals.

“My condolences to the victims and affected families. In communication with the State Government and Civil Protection, we make contact with the foreign ministries of the affected countries,” Ebrard wrote on Twitter.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador also shared his condolences on Twitter.

“I deeply regret the tragedy caused by the overturning of a trailer in Chiapas carrying Central American migrants,” the President said. “It’s very painful. I hug the families of the victims,” he wrote.

The police boss explained that the Command is set to go for the post mortem of the body in Delta state to ascertain the cause of death. He assured that police authorities in both Lagos and Delta State are keenly interested in the outcome of the investigation to unravel the mystery behind Sylvester’s death.

Trump supporter who threatened to hang Congress members jailed 33 months

A die hard supporter of former President of the United States, Donald Trump, who pleaded guilty to threatening to hang members of the US Congress, has been sentenced to 33 months by a US federal court on Saturday.

The convict, Ryder Winegar, of Amherst, New Hampshire, pleaded guilty in August to sending death threats to three Senators and three members of the House of Representatives via voicemail.

In one of the messages, Winegar allegedly told one Senator:

“I got some advice for you. Here’s the advice, Donald Trump is your president. If you don’t get behind him, we’re going to hang you until you die.”

In another message, Winegar indulged in multiple prejudices while making another threat.

“And it really, really, it boils down to two camps,” he said to the unnamed target.

“You either support our president, support liberty, and f*** this global homo, uh, vaccination Jewish agenda, or you’re not. In which case we’re going to f***ing kill you. Do you understand?”

Winegar left the messages in December 2020, at the height of Trump’s effort to challenge President Joe Biden’s electoral victory.

Around the same time, the convict also sent an email to a member of the New Hampshire state legislature in which he threatened to pull the legislator from his bed and hang him.

Speaking after the sentencing, acting US Attorney John J. Farley said that Winegar’s case “sends a clear message that threats of violence have no place in our political discourse.”

“While all citizens are free to express their political opinions, it is unlawful to threaten to commit acts of violence against members of Congress or members of the state legislature.

“Threatening to attack and kill six members of Congress and a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives to prevent them from carrying out their constitutional duties is a federal crime, not protected speech.

“Let’s hope that today’s sentence finally teaches Ryder Winegar that important lesson.”

CNN sacks news anchor Chris Cuomo for helping brother fight sexual charges

America media outfit, Cable News Network (CNN) has fired its primetime anchorman, Chris Cuomo, after he was found guilty of helping his older brother, Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York, in his fight against sexual misconduct charges.

The presenter had earlier been placed on suspension last Tuesday but the network said ‘additional information’ has since come forward, leading to his sack on Saturday.

The 51-year-old Cuomo, according to a statement by the CNN, had allegedly covered up evidence concerning his disgraced brother during investigation into sexual assault charges after some female staff came out to accuse him of sexually harassing them.

Andrew Cuomo had resigned from his post in August after an investigatory report alleged that he had sexually harassed 11 women during his time in office, though he had denied the allegations.

Shortly after he was fired, Chris Cuomo said in a statement:

“This is not how I want my time at CNN to end but I have already told you why and how I helped my brother.

“So let me now say as disappointing as this is, I could not be more proud of the team at Cuomo Prime Time and the work we did … I owe them all and will miss that group of special people who did really important work.”

Libyan court reinstates Gaddafi’s son, Saif, as presidential candidate

The son of late Libya’s leader, Muammar Gaddafi, Saif-al-Islam, has been reinstated as a presidential candidate and given the go-ahead to run in the country’s upcoming presidential election.

The reinstatement of Saif-al-Islam came a week after he was disqualified for what Libyan authorities said were war crimes committed during the uprising against his father more than 10 years ago.

A court in Sebha, on Friday, overturned the electoral commission’s decision to nullify Saif al-Islam’s candidacy for December polls.

Saif al-Islam‘s lawyer, Khaled al-Zaydi, confirmed to that the court accepted his client’s appeal lodged on Thursday, and that he would therefore be reinstated in the presidential election scheduled to take place later this month.

In disqualifying Saif Gaddafi, Libya’s electoral commission had pointed to articles of the electoral law stipulating that candidates “must not have been sentenced for a dishonourable crime” and must present a clean criminal record.

Saif Gaddafi, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes, had registered to run for president on November 14 but was among 25 candidates whose bids were rejected by the elections board last week.

Saif Gaddafi, who was sentenced to death by a Tripoli court in absentia in 2015 for war crimes committed during the failed battle to save his father’s 40-year rule from a NATO-backed uprising, is one of several divisive candidates in the race.

He is a figurehead for Libyans still loyal to the former government of his father, whose toppling and death in 2011 heralded a decade of strife.

However, many other Libyans, including armed groups that hold the balance of power across the country, view his presence on the ballot as unacceptable after the bloody struggle to remove his father.

Paris Archbishop resigns after secret romance with married woman is exposed

The Archbishop of Paris, Michel Aupetit, has resigned his position following the exposure of his secret romance with a married woman.

In a statement by the Vatican on Thursday, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, has accepted Aupetit’s resignation who offered to step down over “ambiguous behavior” with a married woman.

Bishop Aupetit offered his resignation after a report in Le Point magazine surfaced detailing allegations that he had engaged in a consensual relationship with the woman, which he has denied.

In a statement, Aupetit offered that he stepped down “to preserve the diocese from the division that suspicion and loss of trust are continuing to provoke.”

A spokeswoman for the diocese last week said Aupetit “had ambiguous behavior with a person he was very close to,” adding the relationship was neither sexual nor “a loving relationship.”

She said Aupetit’s resignation was “not a confession of guilt, but a humble gesture, an offer of dialogue.”

The Bishops’ Conference of France in a statement, said Pope Francis has also appointed Georges Pontier, the former archbishop of Marseille, as Apostolic Administrator of Paris, to replace Aupetit.

UK court convicts Yoruba activist, Adeyinka Grandson, of racial hatred, incitement to genocide

A court in the United Kingdom has convicted a self-styled Yoruba activist, Adeyinka Grandson, of racial hatred, incitement to genocide and conspiracy to commit terrorist acts.

The UK-based Adeyinka was found guilty of the charges by a Westminster Magistrates Court on Thursday following his arrest by the Scotland Yard Counter Terrorism Command, and the Metropolitan Police in August 2019.

Scotland Yard Counter Terrorism Command had arrested Adeyinka for allegedly “stirring racial discrimination against the Igbos and Fulani ethnic groups in Nigeria and also encouraging terrorism.”

According to preliminary investigations by Scotland Yard, Adeyinka who claimed to be fighting for the Yoruba race and emancipation, used his “position as the leader of Young Yoruba For Freedom (YYF) to spread hatred and extremism against people of other tribes, especially Igbos and Fulani people.”

“On several counts, he had issued ‘quit notices’ to Igbo and Fulani people living in Yoruba land else they would face dire consequences.

“He is also known for making anti-Igbo and anti-Fulani speeches in his YouTube channel for which the UK authorities have consistently warned him before he was later arrested,” a statement by Scotland Yard said.

Following his arrest, Scotland Yard Counter Terrorism Command had grilled him for nine hours, and his house was searched by the London Metropolitan Police following a warrant granted by the Westminster Magistrates’ Court, and incriminating items were seized.

“During interrogation he denied any involvement in terrorism or promoting racial hatred, explaining that his group, the Young Yoruba For Freedom, (YYF), only supports the return of Nigeria to the old regional system. But his videos put a lie to his claim as they portrayed a bitter man spewing hate, bile and threats of war,” the statement added.

Among the conditions for his bail, “Adeyinka must sleep and live at his home address only and can’t access, use, or post on Facebook, Youtube, Tumblr, or the website linked to the YYF, while his sentencing had been scheduled for January 7, 2022, and could face up to 20 years in prison.

Three dead, eight injured in Michigan high school shooting by 15-yr-old

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in Oxford, Michigan, after a mass shooting at the Oxford High School left three students dead and eight others seriously injured on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The Oxford High School students who lost their lives in the shooting were identified as Tate Myre, 16; Hana St. Juliana, 14, and Madisyn Baldwin, 17, according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

Eight others made up of seven students and a teacher, sustained various degrees of Injuries, Bouchard said, with three in critical condition, including a 14-year-old girl who was on a ventilator after having surgery.

The suspect, a sophomore at the school, was taken into custody without incident two to three minutes after authorities responded to the shooting, Bouchard said.

He is being held at Oakland County Children’s Village, a juvenile detention facility, and is on suicide watch where he is being checked on every 15 minutes, said an Oakland County executive.

At a news conference early Wednesday, Bouchard gave some more details about the shooting.

He said the semi automatic handgun used by the suspect has been recovered by law enforcement and was believed to have been bought by suspect’s father on Friday.

The weapon, a 9MM Sig Sauer SP2022 pistol was loaded at the time it was confiscated, and still contained seven rounds, Bouchard said.

A video camera in the school showed that the gunman “came out of the bathroom with the weapon and began firing at fellow students.”

Authorities recovered multiple shell casings in the school and believe around 15-20 shots were fired.

Bouchard said the suspect could be charged as an adult, though that was up to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.

15-yr-old Michigan school shooter charged with murder, terrorism

The 15-year-old student who went on a mass shooting spree at the Oxford High School, Michigan, USA, has been identified by the police as Ethan Crumbley, and has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of terrorism after four teens were gunned down at the high school.

The Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, said on Thursday that Crumbley will be charged with four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of terrorism causing death and 12 firearm possession charges.

McDonald said it is “necessary” to charge Crumbley as an adult to protect the public.

“Charging this person as an adult is necessary to achieve justice and protect the public.

“Any other option would put all of us at risk of this person because they could be released and still a threat,” McDonald said.

Preliminary reports say Crumbley had attended a parent-teacher meeting just three hours before the killings to discuss his “behaviour”.

Other students claim the teen gunman was bullied at the school, which is 40 miles north of Detroit, but police say there are no records of Crumbley being picked on.

Prosecutors report that a journal detailing his desires to shoot students was found in his backpack.

The death toll rose to four Thursday morning when Justin Shilling, 17, who had been fighting for his life in hospital, passed away.

Evidence has been gathered to suggest the massacre was premeditated and not “just an impulsive act,” according to McDonald.

“I am absolutely sure, after reviewing the evidence, that it isn’t even a close call – it was absolutely premeditated,” she said.

Lady who sued her mother’s doctor for permitting her to be born wins millions in compensation

A young British lady identified a Evie Toombes has won her ‘wrong conception’ case against her mother’s doctor.

The 20 year old from Lincolnshire, UK had dragged her mum’s doctor to court for allowing her to be born with a permanent health condition.

The health condition called lipomylomeningocoele (LMM) is as a result of a gap in her spine because it failed to develop while she was in the womb.

Evie whose condition forced her to become a frequent visitor to the hospital to receive tubes into her body, said the doctor failed to prescribe vital supplements that would have averted the problem, WioNews reports.

The compensation will cover her extensive care needs for life At a London’s High Court ruling which held on Wednesday, December 1, Judge Rosalind Coe QC backed the lady’s claim and awarded her a huge compensation for damages.

According to the New York Post, Evie’s lawyers said the amount she is claiming hasn’t been calculated yet but it sure is a big one as it will cover her extensive care needs for the rest of her life.

Judge Rosalind found out that the doctor had truly not told the lady’s mother importance of taking folic acid supplements before getting pregnant.

And if she had been told, she would have delayed conceiving and instead had a different, totally healthy, baby,” the judge added.

Doctor fined for amputating wrong leg of patient

A surgeon in Austria has been fined after amputating the wrong leg of an elderly patient earlier this year.

BBC reports that the patient’s right leg was removed instead of his left, and the mistake was only discovered two days later.

On Wednesday, the court in Linz found the 43-year-old doctor guilty of gross negligence and fined her €2,700 (£2,296).

The widow of the patient, who died before the case came to court, was also awarded €5,000 in damages.

The patient attended the clinic in Freistadt last May to have his leg amputated but the surgeon marked the wrong limb for amputation, AFP news agency reports.

The mistake was identified during a routine bandage change and the patient was told he would have to have his other leg amputated as well.

At the time, the hospital said the incident had occurred as a “result of a sequence of unfortunate circumstances”. Its director made a public apology at a news conference.

In court, the surgeon said there had been a flaw in the chain of command in the operating theatre.

When asked why she had marked the right leg and not the left, she said: “I just don’t know”.

Since the incident, she has moved to another clinic. Half of her fine has been suspended.

22 killed in DR Congo’s attack

At least 22 people were killed on Monday during an attack on an internally displaced people’s camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Red Cross coordinator in the country’s North-East, Mambo Bapu Mance, told journalists that the incident occurred after 20 people were buried in shallow graves.

29 people were killed in the same camp located in the Ituri province less than one week ago, according to aid workers.

Mance accused an armed group, Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO), of carrying out the attack on the camp.

He said: “This is the third attack by these outlaws against displacement sites in the space of a week in this part of the country, causing more than 50 deaths and enormous material damage.”

14-yr-old who killed 15-yr-old school mate bags life imprisonment

A 14-year-old boy, Yussuf Mustapha, has become Britain’s youngest person to be convicted of a gun murder after he was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing a 15-year-old school boy, Keon Lincoln.

Yussuf whose parents are originally from Ghana, turned 14 just three weeks before he shot and killed the Birmingham schoolboy, and will spend a mandatory 16 years in prison before he could be considered for parole.

While passing sentence on Yussuf and four other teenagers indicted in the murder of Keon, on Tuesday, Lord Justice William Davis of the Birmingham Crown Court, said the 14-year-old had shown a clear intent to kill when he opened fire on Keon at close range.

According to the West Midlands Police, Keon was aged 15 when he was stabbed several times and shot by Yussuf and four other teenagers near his home on January 21.

Lord Davis described Yussuf and the other youths who carried out the killing as “heartless, evil monsters” who should be locked up for life.

During the five-week trial, the prosecution told the Crown Court jury that the victim had suffered eight sharp force injuries and a fatal gunshot injury to his abdomen outside his home in Linwood Road, Handsworth, Birmingham.

Before pronouncing the sentence, the judge said:

According to the pre-sentence report, he (Yussuf) has been able at times to show a maturity in advance of his age.

“Certainly there is no indication that he is immature for his age or that he suffers from any behavioural issues which might have led to the events of January 21.

“The offence was not impulsive or the result of volatility. I have no evidence of negative influences other than the fact that the other defendants were older than him.”

Mustapha’s co-defendants Tahjgeem Breakenridge, 18, and Michael Ugochukwu, 18, were both sentenced to life for murder with a minimum term of 19 years.

Australia confirms two cases of new COVID-19 variant

Australian health officials on Sunday confirmed two cases of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron.

The Eastern State of New South Wales’ Health Authority said in a statement its officials conducted urgent genomic testing and confirmed the new strain was present in two passengers who arrived in Sydney from Southern Africa on Saturday.

The statement read: “Both passengers came from southern Africa and arrived in Australia on a Qatar Airways flight via Doha.

“They tested positive for COVID-19 shortly after arriving, leading to an urgent analysis for possible infection by the heavily mutated Omicron strain.

The two positive cases, who were asymptomatic, are in isolation in the special health accommodation. Both people are fully vaccinated .

Another 12 passengers from Southern Africa in the same flight did not test positive for COVID-19 but have been placed in quarantine.

North Korean man sentenced to death for smuggling copies of Netflix’s ‘Squid Game

The North Korean government has sentenced a citizen to death for smuggling copies of Netflix’s South Korean blockbuster series, Squid Game into the country.

Ripples Nigeria gathered that “Squid Game” was smuggled into the country from China through the use of a USB flash drive.

The news platform, Radio Free Asia (via Variety) revealed that authorities were led to the man after they caught high school students watching the series.

The smuggler faces death by firing squad, while the students involved in bringing “Squid Game” into school are facing prison sentences.

North Korea bans leather coats to prevent citizens dressing like President Kim Jong-un

North Korea has banned its citizens from wearing leather trench coats, with authorities claiming it is disrespectful to leader Kim Jong-un after the dictator appeared on TV, wearing a long leather coat two years ago.

The President’s look, according to reports, became quite popular and a lot of people went on to copy it but the authorities now see it as a crime.

The police are also targeting people who sell the fashionable garments and so far, hundreds of dealers have been arrested and charged to court.

A resident of Pyongsong, a city north of the capital Pyongyang, told Radio Free Asia that the coats have grown in appeal this year after leading women, including Kim Jong-un’s sister and likely successor Kim Yo-jong, were spotted in them.

“Now the leather coat has become a symbol for powerful women too.

As leather coats began to be recognised as a symbol of power, private clothing merchants asked trading company officials to import synthetic leather since September of this year.

They copied the design of the leather coats worn by the Highest Dignity and the officials and now they are being sold in the marketplace.”

The resident added that police in Pyongsong recently started cracking down on both vendors and wearers, even though young men have been protesting against the new measures.

“Authorities have described the fashion fad as an impure trend to challenge the authority of the Highest Dignity,” according to the resident.

Another resident, from the North Pyongan province, explained that coats are both “imported from China” and “made domestically” with imported materials.

“Rich entrepreneurs are able to import the fabric for the coats by placing an order with state-run trading companies who have partially resumed maritime smuggling.”

Uganda to lose only international airport to China over debts

Uganda is on the verge of losing it’s only international airport, the Entebbe International Airport, to China after a debt agreement with the Asian country expired on November 17.

The Ugandan government had, on November 17, 2015, signed an agreement with Export-Import Bank of China (Exim Bank) to borrow $207 million at two per cent upon disbursement, with a maturity period of 20 years including a seven-year grace period.

And with a failure to pay back the loan, it has emerged that the deal signed with the Chinese lenders virtually means Uganda will surrender its most prominent and only international airport.

A statement on Friday by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), says “some provisions in the Financing Agreement with China exposed the Entebbe International Airport and other Ugandan assets to be attached and taken over by Chinese lenders upon arbitration in Beijing.”

It also emerged that China has rejected recent pleas by Uganda to renegotiate the toxic clauses of the 2015 loan, leaving Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni’s administration in limbo.

A discrete investigation carried out by a media outfit into the deal has also revealed that the Ugandan government had waived international immunity in the agreement it signed to secure the loans, exposing the Entebbe International Airport to take over without international protection.

“The Ugandan government had, in March, sent a delegation to Beijing hoping to renegotiate the toxic clauses of the deal but the officials came back empty-handed as China would not allow the terms of the original deal to be varied.

“Last week, Uganda’s Finance Minister Matia Kasaija apologized to parliament for the mishandling of the $207 million loan from the China Exim Bank to expand Entebbe International Airport,” the report said.

The Entebbe International Airport is Uganda’s only international airport and handles over 1.9 million passengers per year.

Female passenger breaks bottle, stabs Lagos Uber driver over N4100 fare

An Uber driver, identified only as Adewale, has accused a passenger, Laura, of stabbing him with a bottle during an argument in the Agungi area of Ajah, Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Adewale conveyed the lady from Ajao Estate to her friend’s house in Ajah on Tuesday.
After they got to the place, the driver demanded payment, but Laura reportedly claimed that she could not transfer money to him because her bank’s mobile application was not working.
Speaking with our correspondent, the 42-year-old driver said the passenger went inside the building to get money from her friends and returned with N2,000.

He stated that he demanded his complete payment of N4,100, but the situation led to an argument, as Laura allegedly used a bottle to stab him for refusing to let her go.
Adewale said, “Around 12pm on Tuesday, this lady, Laura, requested me to carry her from Ajao Estate to Agungi in Ajah. I drove down to her location, picked her up and conveyed her to Ajah.
“When we got there, I dropped her off and asked for my money as the Uber app brought up N4,100 as the transport fare. But she said she could not transfer money to my account because the banking app on her phone was not working.

“She requested to meet her friends inside the building to get the money, but I told her to enter my car so I could convey her to the bank to make a cash withdrawal and pay me, but she refused and told me to wait. She went inside and on returning, gave me N2,000 as against the N4,100.
“She told me to give her my account number so she could send the rest, but I declined as I had faced similar situations in the past. She said since I was the one that did not want to agree, she would delay me there.

“I pleaded with her to give me my money to avoid any delay, but she started laughing. I never knew when she went inside, she returned with a bottle. So, when she said that she was going inside without paying my balance, I held her and she attacked me with the bottle. She broke the bottle and used it to stab me in the hand.”
The Ogun State indigene said neighbours around took him to a chemist for treatment, adding that he reported the case at the Ilasan Police Station.
A security guard in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was asleep when he heard the driver and the passenger fighting, adding that he intervened for peace to reign.
He said, “The two of them were fighting and I did not know how she did it because the girl injured the man in the hand. The girl was the one using the bottle; she came to see her friend, Blessing, who stays in the house. I had to call Blessing and her friends to come outside to see what happened.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, said policemen had been detailed to arrest Laura, adding that the command had commenced investigation into the case.
