Nigerian student who abandoned school is jailed for smuggling drugs in Cyprus

A Nigerian man identified as Chinedu Ogugua Bosah, has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment for smuggling into the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

In March 2022, Chinedu Ogugua Bosah and Ameer Hussain were arrested in connection with the 1 kilo of cocaine seized during the White Wolf operation in Minareliko’y.

Chinedu was sentenced on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

President Fad’l Aksun, who read the decision, on Wednesday said:

“The legislator prescribes a prison sentence of up to 18 years for the most severe type of case in which the accused is convicted.”

Aksun explained that the drugs imported by the accused are cocaine type and are among the dangerous drugs in Class A. He said Chinedu was just a courier hence the lighter sentence.

Asun said: “The role of the accused before us is that of a courier. As a requirement of this role, the accused is the person who imports the drug subject to the lawsuit himself. Its role should be regarded as primary in terms of import crime.

When evaluating the issue in terms of the crime of saving, we see that the role of the accused is one degree less than those who will earn money from the sale of drugs, and we consider this issue in favor of it.”

Aksun stated that the accused had been wandering around the country like a ghost for almost 7 years without any record.

“The adventure of the accused, which started as a university student in our country, ended in prison after he committed a crime, the accused who has not renewed his university registration since 2015, has not been identified.

“It is understood that the state authority is surprised about basic issues such as how the accused lives in our country, how he earns money, where he stays, and it is only detected by the police after he committed this crime.”

Italian archaeologists discover 2300 year old preserved bronze statues

Italian archaeologists have unearthed 24 beautifully preserved bronze statues in Tuscany, Italy believed to date back to 2300 years ago in ancient Roma.

The statues were discovered under the muddy ruins of an ancient bathhouse in San Casciano dei Bagni, a hilltop town in the Siena province, about 160km (100 miles) north of the capital Rome. The statues depict Hygieia, Apollo and other Greco-Roman gods.

Most of the statues – which were found submerged beneath the baths alongside around 6,000 bronze, silver and gold coins – date to between the 2nd Century BC and the 1st Century AD.

The era marked a period of “great transformation in ancient Tuscany” as the area transitioned from Etruscan to Roman rule, the Italian culture ministry said.

Jacopo Tabolli, an assistant professor from the University for Foreigners in Siena who helped in the discovery, suggested that the statues had been immersed in thermal waters in a sort of ritual.

“You give to the water because you hope that the water gives something back to you,” he observed.

The statues, which were preserved by the water, will be taken to a restoration laboratory in nearby Grosseto, before eventually being put on display in a new museum in San Casciano, the Italian culture ministry said.

Massimo Osanna, director general of Italy’s state museums, said the discovery was the most important since the Riace Bronzes and “certainly one of the most significant bronze finds ever made in the history of the ancient Mediterranean”.

The Riace Bronzes – discovered in 1972 – depict a pair of ancient warriors. They are believed to date back to around 460-450 BC.

NDLEA alerts on plot to introduce lethal synthetic opioid, Fentanyl to Nigerian market

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, says it has uncovered plans by some unscrupulous elements to introduce a lethal synthetic opioid, Fentanyl, which is 100 times stronger than Tramadol, into the Nigerian market.

Spokesperson of the anti-narcotics agency, Femi Babafemi, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, November 8, warned that the illicitly manufactured drug is capable of causing mass casualty among the youth population being targeted by the cartels.

The agency said every step must be taken to ensure that the drug which is currently responsible for over 70% overdose deaths as well as a major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the US is not allowed to circulate in Nigeria because of its lethality and the current drug abuse prevalence of 14.4% in the country.

“We are not unaware of desperate efforts by some drug cartels to introduce to the Nigerian market, Fentanyl, which according to the CDC, is 80 times as potent as morphine and 100 times more potent than heroin.

This, they plan to do either in liquid or powder form and/or with misleading labels to target our youth population.

This they may also mix with other prescription drugs. The illegally manufactured fentanyl in its liquid form can come in nasal sprays, eye drops, or small candies,” the statement read.

“As a result, parents and other stakeholders are advised to be vigilant, alert and warn their young ones against attempting experimenting with this illicit substance.

Symptoms for fentanyl exposure and/or overdose include pinpoint pupils, falling asleep or losing consciousness, slow and shallow breathing, choking or gurgling sounds, limp body, and pale, blue, or cold skin

“The Agency wishes to assure the public that all necessary assets have been deployed to monitor the cartels involved in this latest threat to public health with a view to frustrating their criminal plot and make them face the wrath of the law.”

UK warns its citizens to avoid 22 states in Nigeria over insecurity issues

The United Kingdom has warned its citizens against traveling to 22 states in Nigeria over insecurity issues.

This was announced by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) in a statement published on its website on Monday, November 7, 2022.

Back in October, the UK government warned of an increased threat of terrorist attacks in the Federal Capital Territory, after which it restricted access to the British High Commission in Abuja.

In the statement titled “Updated Foreign Commonwealth Development Office Travel Advice to British Nationals Traveling to the FCT,” the UK said the warning is to help its nationals make better-informed decisions about international travel and plan for a trouble-free trip.

The statement read,

“FCDO travel advice exists to inform British nationals so they can make decisions about travelling abroad.

There continues to be a number of states in Nigeria where we advise British Nationals against all but essential travel.

These include: Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Niger, Sokoto, Kogi, Abia, Plateau, Taraba, within 20km of the border with Niger in Kebbi State and non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers States.

“We also advise against all travel to: Borno State, Yobe State, Adamawa State, Gombe State, Kaduna State, Katsina State, Zamfara state, and the riverine areas of Delta State, Bayelsa State, Rivers State, Akwa Ibom State, and Cross River State.

“The UK keeps its travel advice under regular review and in making these assessments and uses information from a wide range of sources.

The travel advice is constantly reviewed to make sure it reflects the current situation in Abuja and Nigeria.

Although the FCDO Travel Advice no longer advises against all but essential travel to the Federal Capital Territory, including the city of Abuja, it makes clear that some risks remain.”

The UK advised its citizens to monitor the latest updates and stay in contact with their travel provider.

US court sentences Hushpuppi to 11 years in prison for fraud, orders him to pay $1.7m to victims

A United States District Court for the Central District of California has finally sentenced Instagram celebrity, Ramon Abass Olorunwa, popularly known as Hushpuppi, to 11 years and three months in prison for fraud.

The 40-year-old was sentenced on Monday, November 7, by United States District Judge Otis D. Wright II, who also ordered Abbas to pay $1,732,841 in restitution to two fraud victims.

The judge said Hushpuppi conspired to launder tens of millions of dollars through online scams and flaunted his luxurious, crime-funded lifestyle on social media.

He pleaded guilty in April 2021 to one count of conspiracy to engage in money laundering, 10 months after he was arrested in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), in June 2020.

Hushpuppi has remained in US federal custody since his expulsion from the UAE. A statement released by the US court read:

“Abbas bragged on social media about his lavish lifestyle – a lifestyle funded by his involvement in transnational fraud and money laundering conspiracies targeting victims around the world,” said United States Attorney Martin Estrada.

“Money laundering and business email compromise scams are a massive international crime problem, and we will continue to work with our law enforcement and international partners to identify and prosecute those involved, wherever they may be.”

“Ramon Abbas, a.k.a. ‘Hushpuppi,’ targeted both American and international victims, becoming one of the most prolific money launderers in the world,” said Don Alway, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.

“Abbas leveraged his social media platforms – where he amassed a considerable following – to gain notoriety and to brag about the immense wealth he acquired by conducting business email compromise scams, online bank heists and other cyber-enabled fraud that financially ruined scores of victims and provided assistance to the North Korean regime.

“This significant sentence is the result of years’ worth of collaboration among law enforcement in multiple countries and should send a clear warning to international fraudsters that the FBI will seek justice for victims, regardless of whether criminals operate within or outside United States borders.”

Abbas apologised for his crimes to Judge Otis D Wright in a handwritten note, saying he would use his personal funds to pay back his victims. He also said he had only made $300,000 from the crime he was being tried for.

As of September 30, Meta had about 87,000 employees worldwide across its different platforms, which include social media sites Facebook and Instagram as well as messaging platform Whatsapp.

In his announcement of Meta’s disappointing third quarter results, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the firm’s staff would not increase by the end of 2023, and might decrease slightly.

Meta in the third quarter saw its profits fall to $4.4 billion, a 52 per cent decrease year-over-year.Meta’s stock price took a major hit on the disappointing results, falling 25 per cent in one day.

The company’s market value over the past year is down to $600 billion. In addition to its ad-supported business woes, investors have been worried about Zuckerberg’s decision to devote major funds into developing the metaverse.

Musk took over Twitter late last month and last week laid off around half of the company’s workforce.

Detailing the new policy on parody accounts, Musk tweeted on Monday, November 7.

Musk said last week that banned accounts would not be reinstated until there was “a clear process for doing so”.

The Borno State Police Command has released the sheep that was arrested for eating a heap of fried fish displayed for sale at Bulabulin Ward in Maiduguri after the animal was forgiven by the victim.
