Apple and Google face UK browser probe

The United Kingdom’s competition watchdog is investigating Apple and Google’s dominance in mobile browsers after gaining substantial support from industry players in a consultation process which began in June.

Responses to the consultation process from browser vendors, web developers and cloud gaming service providers showed Apple and Google’s dominance was harming businesses, holding back innovation and adding to unnecessary costs, the Competition and Markets Authority stated.

According to Mobile World Live, it launched the consultation process following a year-long Mobile Ecosystem Market Study, which found Apple and Google had an effective duopoly on mobile ecosystems that allowed them to exercise a stranglehold over operating systems, app stores, and web browsers on mobile devices.

The UK regulator explained in its statement announcing a probe that browsers were one of the most important and widely-used apps on mobile devices, with most people using them to access a range of content.

In the UK, 97 per cent of all mobile web browsing in 2021 happened on Apple or Google browsersm

“So any restrictions on these engines can have a major impact on users’ experiences, “ the regulator said.

Sarah Cardell, interim CEO of CMA, said it planned to investigate both companies’ practices and assess whether concerns raised “are justified and if so, identify steps to improve competition and innovation in these sectors.”

In a related issue, the CMA also received feedback that Apple restricted cloud gaming services, of which there are 800,000 users in the country, hampering growth in the sector.

The regulator noted that web developers had complained about Apple restrictions and lack of investment in browser technologies, arguing that this limited choices and mase it more difficult to bring innovation to the UK market.

David Walliams leaves Britain’s Got Talent after 10 years

Comedian and actor, David Walliams is taking a bow from Britain’s Got Talent after 10 years judging on the ITV show.

51-year-old David stepped down as a judge on the show after he was forced to apologize for foul-mouthed comments about contestants.

Walliams is preparing to formally confirm his decision to step back in the coming weeks.

A source told The Sun;

Musk announces gold, grey, blue badges for Twitter

Twitter’s billionaire owner Elon Musk announced Friday that the platform would be launching differently colored badges to distinguish between accounts.

“Sorry for the delay, we’re tentatively launching Verified on Friday next week,” he tweeted.

“Gold check for companies, grey check for government, blue for individuals (celebrity or not) and all verified accounts will be manually authenticated before check activates.”

In another tweet, Musk said all verified individual accounts would have the same blue check, but some would eventually be able to display a “secondary tiny logo showing they belong to an organisation.

The Tesla and SpaceX boss’ proposal for users to be able to pay to be “verified” and obtain a blue badge on their profiles has caused confusion since he acquired the social media giant last month.

Musk proposed a subscription fee of $8 a month to allow users to obtain the blue check – which was previously free but reserved for organisations and public figures in an attempt to avoid impersonation and misinformation.

The first rollout of Musk’s subscription plan in early November quickly went south, with many accounts paying for the blue check and then impersonating world leaders, celebrities or companies.

Responding to the backlash, Musk initially postponed the launch date to November 29, before delaying it once more. It now appears the feature will launch on December 2.

Musk has said he wants to charge users for subscriptions to the social media platform to diversify its income stream.

Twitter currently depends on advertising for 90 per cent of its revenue.Several major brands have withdrawn from advertising on the platform since Musk bought it, fearing that his promised relaxation of content moderation could open their companies up to being associated with objectionable content.

According to the NGO Media Matters, half of Twitter’s top 100 advertisers have announced that they are suspending or “have apparently suspended” their spending on the social network.

NDLEA partners French police to tackle drug trafficking

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has announced its partnership with the French Police.

This was as the anti-narcotics agency’s Chairman, Major General Buba Marwa (retd.), commended the support from the Police Nationale of France, especially in the areas of training and equipment.

The NDLEA boss spoke in his office in Abuja on Friday when the Police Attaché at the French Embassy in Nigeria, Emmanuel Verin, led a team of French trainers including Cedric B. and Christophe J., who were in the country to train a number of the NDLEA officers in special operations, paid him a courtesy visit.

Announcing the visit in a statement on Friday, the NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, noted that Marwa appreciated the French government for its support as one of the anti-narcotics agency’s leading partners.

According to Babafemi, Marwa said,

“We have received tremendous help from France not only in terms of training but also equipment. The support was capped with my recent visit to France where we received warm reception at all the institutions visited and the training promised was promptly organized.

We’re grateful for that and we are looking forward to more collaboration and support.

“In his response, Verin said, “We’re proud to work with the NDLEA because your officers and men are very smart and professional and that’s why you’re getting results, hence, our priority in terms of support for the NDLEA is in the area of training.

Our trainers, who have been here to train your men, are specialists and top in the field. We’ll do this for a very long time and we’re glad to work with you.”

Elon Musk considers reinstating all suspended Twitter accounts

The new owner of Twitter and the wealthiest man in the world, Elon Musk, on Wednesday revealed that he was considering lifting the ban on all suspended Twitter accounts and reinstating them back to the platform.

This comes days after Twitter reinstated former US President, Donald Trump, into the platform after Musk conducted a Twitter poll that saw 52 per cent of the 15 million participants vote for Trump’s comeback.

In another Twitter poll on Wednesday night, Musk asked people to vote for or against reinstating all suspended accounts provided that haven’t broken the law or engaged in egregious spam.

Musk tweeted,

“Should Twitter offer a general amnesty to suspended accounts, provided that they have not broken the law or engaged in egregious spam?”

The options in the poll are simply, ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.The results are not in yet as the poll still has about five hours left before it elapses.

If results come in positive, that could see all suspended accounts reinstated back to the platform as Musk has always advocated that the voice of the people should prevail above others

We’ll soon reduce volume of N500 and N1000 in circulation – Emefiele

Godwin Emefiele, Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria has said that they’ve concluded plans to reduce the volume of higher denominations, N500 and N1000 in circulation to tame inflation.

Emefiele who claimed that high volume of higher denominations could be part of the factors fuelling inflation in the country, backed his claim up by pointing out that the highest denomination in the UK is £50 and the most spent currency in the country is £10.

He said;

“Rarely you find some people spend £20. Nobody sees £50. If you go around carrying £50 in the UK, they will begin to suspect you. Whereas, the reverse is what is happening in Nigeria. Nigerians want to carry N1,000 or N500.

“In fact, we’re beginning to see or think that increasing the high denomination bills is also part of what may even be fuelling inflation.

“So, over time, we will reduce the volume of N500 and N1000 in circulation.

“Let people carry N50 around. If you want to do high-value transactions, embrace online, embrace our agency programme, embrace our mobile banking programme. That is what you need. You want to conduct legal banking or financial services transactions, you have no business carrying N1,000.”

Zhengzhou is the Taiwanese company’s crown jewel, churning out iPhones in quantities not seen anywhere else.

The Chief Medical Director of University College Hospital, Ibadan, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, has disclosed that about 661 clinical workers resigned their roles from 2020 till October 15, 2022, to relocate to other countries, a situation which has been taking its toll on the running of the hospital.

South African court orders former President Jacob Zuma back to jail after ruling medical parole

South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal ruled on Monday November 21, that the decision to release former President Jacob Zuma on early medical parole was “unlawful” and that he should return to prison to finish his sentence for contempt of court.

Last year, Zuma was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment after ignoring a court order to testify at a government inquiry into widespread corruption during his near-decade as president, a tenure that ended in 2018 when incumbent Cyril Ramaphosa replaced him.

In September 2021, Zuma was released on medical parole after serving a fraction of the sentence.

But in December, the high court set aside the parole decision and ordered him to return to jail.

Zuma appealed that ruling and judgment was delivered on Monday, a month after the department of correctional services said his prison sentence had ended.

“In other words, Mr. Zuma, in law, has not finished serving his sentence. He must return to the Escourt Correctional centre to do so,” the Supreme Court of Appeal’s judgment read.

The court took issue with the department’s claim that Zuma’s sentence had ended while the appeal was still being heard.

It also found that the decision by the former national commissioner of correctional services to grant Zuma medical parole against the advice of the Medical Parole Advisory Board, a specialist body, was unlawful.

“On any conceivable basis, the commissioner’s decision was unlawful and unconstitutional. The high court was correct to set it aside,” the judgment said.

Chris Hemsworth has revealed he will be taking a break from acting to spend time with his family days after revealing that he has high risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

The Thor star, 39, told Vanity Fair, he has decided to take ‘time off’ after filming a confronting episode about death on his new Disney+ docu-series Limitless.

‘Doing an episode on death and facing your own mortality made me go, “Oh God, I’m not ready to go yet”,’ he said.

‘I want to sit and be in this space with a greater sense of stillness and gratitude. And then you start talking about kids and family…’ Chris explained:

‘It really triggered something in me to want to take some time off. And since we finished the show, I have been completing the things I was already contracted to do.’

Theranos founder, Elizabeth Holmes sentenced to 11 years in prison for fraud

38-year-old Elizabeth Holmes, who was once described by Forbes as one of the richest Selfmade billionaires in America, has been sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison for fraud.

Despite being currently pregnant with her second child. A federal judge on Friday November 18, jailed theTheranos founder for defrauding investors in her now-defunct blood-testing startup that was once valued at $9 billion.

The founder of health technology company, Theranos, was at a point worth $4.5billion and hailed as a genius on the verge of changing the health sector.

She has since been exposed as a fraudster who deceived Silicon Valley investors, including media mogul, Rupert Murdock, into funding her start up with false promises.

Her company gained worldwide recognition in 2013 after she claimed she had invented a revolutionary blood testing kit that only required small amounts of blood and performed accurate results in as little as 20 minutes.

Turns out it was all lies and her company was a hoax used to swindle investors, according to prosecutors in her trial.

She was reported to the FBI by some investors after she failed to show what their money had been used for. After a thorough investigation, she was arrested for fraud.

Her attorneys had wanted her to get only 18 months in prison but prosecution said her arrogance and lack of acknowledgement of wrongdoing through out the trial deserved 15 years in prison.

Prosecutors said during the trial that Holmes misrepresented Theranos’ technology and finances, including by claiming that its miniaturized blood testing machine was able to run an array of tests from a few drops of blood.

The company secretly relied on conventional machines from other companies to run patients’ tests, prosecutors said. Holmes testified in her own defense, saying she believed her statements were accurate at the time.

She was convicted on four counts but acquitted on four other counts alleging she defrauded patients who paid for Theranos tests. Theranos Inc promised to revolutionize how patients receive diagnoses by replacing traditional labs with small machines envisioned for use in homes, drugstores and even on the battlefield.

The judge agreed and sentenced her to 11 years in prison and she was also asked to return $121million to investors. Before handing down the sentence, Davila called the case “troubling on so many levels,” questioning what motivated Holmes, a “brilliant” entrepreneur, to misrepresent her company to investors.

“This is a fraud case where an exciting venture went forward with great expectations only to be dashed by untruths, misrepresentations, plain hubris and lies,” the judge said.

Holmes, dressed in a dark blouse and black skirt, hugged her parents and her partner after the sentence was handed down.

Forbes dubbed Holmes the world’s youngest female self-made billionaire in 2014, when she was 30 and her stake in Theranos was worth $4.5 billion.

Theranos collapsed after a series of Wall Street Journal articles in 2015 questioned its technology. Actress Amanda Seyfried in September won an Emmy Award for portraying Holmes in the limited series “The Dropout.”
