Ukraine’s drone attack on Moscow repelled, Russia says

The Russian army said it repelled another Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow on Monday morning.

The army said an airborne drone was intercepted in the west of the city over the Istra District, the defence ministry said.

“The anti-aircraft defence shot down a drone during an attempted approach to Moscow. There is no damage or casualties,” Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote on Telegram.

Another drone was also brought down by electronic jamming west of Moscow in Rusa District, according to military sources.

The Russian agencies said because of the danger in the air, the airports: Vnukovo and Domodedovo, south of Moscow temporarily closed their airspace.

Ukraine has flown drones over Moscow several times in recent weeks as part of its battle against the Russian invasion.

They have managed to hit skyscrapers in the modern business district of Moskva-City.

NEMA distributes relief materials to Kwara flood victims

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has commenced the distribution of relief materials to flood victims in Kwara.

Governor AbdulRahaman AbdulRazaq, represented by Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi, inaugurated the distribution of the relief materials on Sunday.

NEMA director-general Mustapha Ahmed, said the federal government approved the intervention for people affected by the 2022 flood disasters and those classified as the most vulnerable persons across the country.

Mr Ahmed, represented by Ephraim Tony, NEMA head of monitoring and evaluation, said the 2022 flood disaster devastated many communities across the country.

He said in Kwara, most people in the communities were displaced and their farmlands and crops were completely washed away by the flood.

“Following the flood, search and rescue operations were successfully conducted in several locations where trapped persons were rescued and given necessary care,” Mr Ahmed explained.

“Immediately after the flood incident, damage and loss assessment were conducted and relief items approved by the federal government were delivered across the states to complement initial intervention by the state government.”

Mr Ahmed said the intervention was also expected to drive the sustainable socio-economic resilience of the targeted most vulnerable individuals.

According to him, NEMA staff are deployed to conduct the verification of the beneficiaries in collaboration with personnel from SEMAs, State Agricultural Development Project and other relevant stakeholders.

He added that 660,884 households were verified and targeted to benefit from the special intervention across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The NEMA boss advised the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the distributed items to improve their socio-economic conditions.

Magnitude 5.1 earthquake hits Southern California

As tropical storm Hilary bears down on Southern California, a series of earthquakes complicated the picture even further, with a magnitude 5.1 quake just south of the Los Padres National Forest around 2:45 p.m.

Sunday (2145 GMT).Four more followed suit in the minutes after, ranging from 3.1 to 3.6 on the Richter scale.

The storm made landfall Sunday on the Baja California peninsula of Mexico, with “catastrophic and life-threatening flooding” expected in the region, including across parts of the southwestern U.S., according to the National Hurricane Centre.

One person drowned Saturday in the Mexican town of Santa Rosalia, on the peninsula’s eastern coast, when a vehicle was swept away in an overflowing stream.

Rescue workers managed to save four other people, said Edith Aguilar Villavicencio, the mayor of Mulege township.

Forecasters have warned of “life-threatening” flooding in areas not known for rainfall and said strong winds might down trees and power lines.

California Governor Gavin Newsom on Saturday declared a state of emergency ahead of Hilary’s expected landing later Sunday.

The storm is expected to enter the history books as the first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years.

Burkina Faso police killed 40 Islamic fighters after ambush, five officers dead

The police in Burkina Faso killed 40 Islamist fighters, the army said on Sunday.

The terrorists ambushed a police reconnaissance mission in Koulpelogo province in the north-east of the country on Saturday, the military said.

Five police officers were also killed during the attack.

Armed groups have been active in the Sahel state and its neighbours Mali and Niger for years.

Some of the armed groups have sworn allegiance to the terrorist groups Islamic State and al-Qaeda.

Thousands have died in the conflict with armed groups with millions of people displaced.

All three countries are led by military leaders who took power in military coups – the most recent of which was in Niger on July 26.

Burkina Faso, which has a population of around 21 million, is led by a military transitional government that promised the population after a coup in autumn to eradicate the jihadists – but so far without success.

Niger Delta chieftain lauds Tinubu for returning NDDC to Presidency

A Niger Delta chieftain, Nature Dumale, on Sunday hailed the decision of President Bola Tinubu to return the supervision of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to the Presidency.

“We are standing behind President Tinubu and we await, with great enthusiasm and renewed vigour, the speedy development of our homeland,” he stated.

Mr Dumale, the national secretary of the First Phase Ex-agitator, gave the commendation on behalf of ex-agitators in a statement.

“It is heart-warming to hear that the NDDC will henceforth report directly to the President like the North East Development Commission (NEDC). This development is like an answered prayer. I had in the past led a campaign for the commission to be directly supervised by the President positive impact,” he said.

Mr Dumale, the chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) Strategic Communication Committee, added, “Tinubu has, by this singular act, demonstrated his genuine intention to turn around the fortunes of the NDDC and by extension, the Niger Delta region.”

He said the the Niger Delta suffered lack of development over the years because greedy individuals were allowed to convert many interventions of the federal government for the region, to personal use.

Mr Dumale said, “We, in Niger Delta region want to use this opportunity to appreciate Mr. President, for the wisdom in returning the NDDC to the Presidency. We believe that this will speed up the development of the region, and stem the culture of turning the Commission into a cash cow.

He stressed that it “is a sign that the president has good intentions for the Niger Delta region for summoning the political will to move the interventionist agency back to the Presidency.

“As ex-agitators, we can boldly say that the Niger Delta has been suffering because of mismanagement. This move will engender accountability, transparency and the much touted development of the Niger Delta, would become a reality,” Mr Dumale explained.

“This is one step Mr. President has taken to give us hope as leaders in the region. We believe that the NDDC under the supervision of the Presidency would facilitate meaningful development.”

He noted that the “only time we experienced some development was when NDDC was under the direct supervision of the Presidency,” pointing out that as “soon as it was moved to the Ministry of Niger Delta, it became a cash cow, for the Niger Delta Cartel, whose only agenda, is to keep the Niger Delta underdeveloped.”

Mr Dumale said it was discovered that apart from the NDDC and the PAP, there is a Niger Delta Recovery Plan (NDRP), which mandates the ministries of petroleum, environment and Niger Delta affairs, to work in synergy in articulating the development of the region.

“We live in an environment where a lot is taken away on a daily basis by the federal government, yet there is little to show for it. The condition of Ogoni-Onne-Eleme Road, which is part of the East-West road, comes to mind. The road has remained a death trap making it impossible for free movement of goods,” stated Mr Dumale.

Citizens mock El-Rufai, name him reggae minister

Nigerian netizens have mocked ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai, christening him “reggae minister,” following his cryptic lamentation on betrayal, by posting online a Bob Marley song’s lyrics underscoring the theme.

On Sunday it was reported how Mr El-Rufai shared lyrics of Bob Marley’s ‘Who the cap fit’ that decried betrayal by close friends and allies, days after he was forced to abandon his ministerial bid over insidious attacks from Nuhu Ribadu and the backstabbing he suffered from his political protege and successor, Governor Uba Sani.

Though Mr El-Rufai declined comment when asked if his cryptic tweet was targeted at Mr Sani, cybernauts have mocked Mr El-Rufai on social media platforms, linking his tweet to his failed ministerial appointment saga.

Senator Shehu Sani, Mr El-Rufai’s political rival, said, “I have turned him into a Rastafarian and reggae artist…yeah man.”

A Facebook user, Esabgbedo Iluobe, said, “Hell rufai is now a rejected stone. He got what he did to others in the past. Haba mallam, you are now minister for reggae songs.”

An X user, @M77 said, “Wa gwan Rasta El Rufai!! Hypocrite!!.

Another cybernetizen, @trinityubiego stated, “El Reggae Rufai.”

Facebook user Gabby Gabito said “Minister of Reggae artist and Rastafarians.”

X user @Kuwait_magix, said Tinubu “played you out to Egypt, you’re playing Bob Marley out to us just to console yourself.”

“Lessons has been learnt,” added the commenter.

X user @Drelmoariku said, “So, you have now become a reggae dancer since Tinubu refused to make you a minister. I recommend a collabo with @burnaboy.” “Sorry Nasir @elrufai , it’s sad you are employing Bob Marley’s song for Lamentations 101,” said X user AjayiWizeman.

“You pose as the people’s friend when you want power. You lie to be an Accidental Public servant when you want to pretend to go destroying Kaduna. Hoin! Na the corn wey you throw us dey haunt you now!!”

UK court authorises SSS victim Williams Emovbira to seize $21 million from CBN account with JP Morgan in New York

A court in the United Kingdom has authorised Louis Williams Emovbira, a British-Nigerian abused and defrauded by the State Security Service (SSS) in 1986, to seize $21 million and nearly £20,000 from Nigeria’s central bank account domiciled in JP Morgan in the United States, according to court filings.

By the judgment of Justice Mary Clare Moulder, Mr Emovbira has the UK’s legal backing to approach JP Morgan in New York and seize $21,231,960.74 and £19,763.130 from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s account domiciled in the top American bank.

In a June 26, 2023, lawsuit filed before the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Mr Emovbira argued his entitlement to the judgement fund from the savings of Nigeria at JP Morgan.

“Plaintiff has obtained (and is entitled to the recognition) of a money judgment in its favour and against the Nigerian government defendant,” his lawyers said.

Mr Emovbira had obtained the judgment from the Queen’s Bench Division of the High Court of Justice on November 9, 2018, but the money had accrued a nine per cent interest over a period of almost five years since the judgment was given.

Court filings said Mr Emovbira in 1986 guaranteed $6.5 million payable within 90 days for his client, Pearl Konsult Ltd (PKL), to export foodstuff to Nigeria from England after a British lawyer Reuben Gale approached PKL and proposed to pay N30 million in form of bank drafts to be cashed in a Nigerian bank.

But to Mr Emovbira’s utter shock, his bank account was frozen as soon as the drafts became ready for encashment.

The plot thickened when he later discovered that Mr Gale was not the businessman he had claimed to be but an operative of the brutal secret police, SSS, the document said.

The court also heard that the British-Nigerian businessman was later arrested by the SSS, acting on orders from the CBN, which then accused him of conspiring to sell foreign currency without authorisation, in violation of the Exchange Control and Anti-Sabotage Decree 1984.

Mr Emovbira said he was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in 1986 but managed to escape in 1989 and fled to London.

But he stated that all efforts to retrieve his money from the Nigerian government so far have fallen through.

Mr Emovbira got a presidential pardon from then-military head of state Ibrahim Babangida in on August 23, 1993, and an order approving his recompensation for the scammed funds. He said he did not receive the money.

“The government admitted that the funds it promised to repay Dr Williams had been “obtained by fraud deception and racketeering influenced scheme of premeditated felony,” Mr Emovbira quoted a section of his Fidelity Guarantee as saying.

A special judicial review panel under Ernest Shonekan of the Interim National Government (ING) after findings found Mr Emovbira to be innocent of the charge preferred against him and ratified General Babangida’s pardon.

The presidency had written the CBN directing the payment of stolen funds on two separate occasions, September 14 and 28, 1993, still there was no response from the nation’s apex bank, he said.

CBN’s silence on paying the owed sums caused the legal battles to linger for years until Nigeria returned to civillian rule.

Then-CBN governor Charles Soludo also acknowledged the funds owed Mr Emovbira.

Mr Emovbira also submitted to the court a presidential directive dated July 1, 2009, and signed by Umar Yar’Adua, which asked the CBN to immediately pay the victim to avoid further ceaseless litigations over the matter.

A spokesman for the CBN did not immediately return a request seeking comments about Mr Emovbira’s lawsuit.

But the bank had filed a motion requesting the case to be transferred from the Supreme Court of the State of New York to a federal court where Nigeria can plead sovereign immunity to argue that Nigeria is a sovereign state which cannot subject itself to the orders of other nations.

“The CBN respectfully requests that the above-captioned action be removed from the Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New York, in which it was filed, to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and for such and other further relief as the Court may deem just and proper,” the bank’s lawyers said in an August 18, 2023, motion.

The defendants include federal government, attorney general of the federation, CBN, JP Morgan & Co and 10 other parties who have yet to be named in the suit.

Mr Emovbira also urged President Bola Tinubu to direct the CBN to release the funds to him to end the decades-long legal crisis and spare the Nigerian government the embarrassment that could arise from enforcing the confiscation order in a foreign bank.

Mr Emovbira said the funds, when recovered, would be used to improve the health and education of children in Nigeria.

Ekiti council chairman warns residents against open defecation

The chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area in Ekiti, Osadare Oloruntoba, on Sunday, warned residents to desist from defecating in bushes and open places.

Mr Oloruntoba gave the warning in an interview in Eda-Oniyo.

He expressed satisfaction with the clean and hygienic environment being experienced in the community, describing it as encouraging.

Mr Oloruntoba advised landlords to build good toilets in their houses to enable occupants have access to clean sanitary facilities.

The chairman also urged parents to desist from allowing their children to defecate in front of their houses, drainages or roadside bushes within the community.

He said that open defecation could cause cholera outbreak if residents do not adhere strictly to good hygiene and proper cleaning of their environment.

“I want to warn residents to stop defecating in the environment to curb outbreaks of diseases such as cholera, among other dangerous diseases that can emanate from feaces exposed in the open.

“The health officers have been advocating and visiting landlords to build toilets for their tenants but some are yet to adhere to this directive.

“We are fighting war against open defecation for the benefits of our children, youths and aged ones and we will continue until our communities are clean,” he said.

Mr Oloruntoba assured residents of his administration’s commitment to providing quality health service delivery in the various health centres established in the communities.

We don’t want war but will defend our country when necessary- Niger Coup Leader

The leader of the mutineers who seized power in Niger, Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, said on Saturday that his country does not want war, but will be ready to defend itself if necessary.

“Neither the army nor the people of Niger want war, but we will resist any manifestation of it,” Mr Tchiani was quoted as saying by the Al Jazeera broadcaster.

He noted that the member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) do not realise that Niger has become the key to containing the region from destabilisation against the backdrop of increased terrorist activity.

Mr Tchiani added that the sanctions imposed against his country were aimed at putting pressure on the rebels, and not at finding a solution to the current situation.

In addition, Mr Tchiani said that rebels do not seek to seize power in the country but rather seek to come to a solution that would meet the interests of the people.

On Saturday, media reported that an ECOWAS delegation arrived in the capital of Niger and met with deposed President Mohamed Bazoum to assess conditions of his detention.

Later in the day, Reuters reported that the delegation also held talks with Mr Tchiani.

A coup took place in Niger on July 26 and Bazoum was ousted and detained by his own guard, led by Mr Tchiani.

Following the coup, ECOWAS suspended all financial aid to Niger, froze rebels’ assets, and imposed a ban on commercial flights to and from the country.

In early August, during a summit in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, ECOWAS leaders agreed to activate a standby force to potentially compel the Nigerien military to reinstate Bazoum.

O

n Friday, ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs Abdel-Fatau Musah said that ECOWAS general staff chiefs had agreed on a date for the beginning of military intervention, but would not make it public.

Sweden beat Australia to bag bronze at Women’s World Cup

Fridolina Rolfo scored one and set up the other as Sweden won bronze at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with a deserved 2-0 win over Australia.

The victory, sealed by Kosovare Asllani’s superb second-half strike, maintains the Scandinavians’ remarkable 100 per cent record in four FIFA Women’s World Cup bronze-medal matches.

It also earned the Swedes a fifth podium finish – second only to the USA (8).

The match provided a sad end to a memorable campaign for the Matildas, who had been hoping to enhance their best-ever performance at the global finals and finish on a high in Brisbane.

The tone, though, was set inside the opening minute. This was when Sweden carved through the leaden-footed Australia defence to set up Stina Blackstenius for a right-foot shot that forced an excellent save from Mackenzie Arnold.

It would prove to be the first of many opportunities for a team that looked fresher and faster throughout, and it was no surprise when the Swedes moved in front on the half-hour mark.

Clare Hunt’s clipping of Blackstenius’s heels inside the box was identified following a VAR review.

In spite of Australia’s best efforts at gamesmanship, Rolfo dispatched a textbook left-foot penalty low and hard into the right-hand corner.

The Matildas did have their moments, and Zecira Musovic was twice called upon to keep out powerful efforts from Hayley Raso and, later, Sam Kerr.

Sweden, though, remained the game’s most potent attacking force, and they made sure of another Women’s World Cup bronze in the 62nd minute.

This was when Rolfo teed up Asllani for a wonderful first-time shot that flashed low beyond the helpless Arnold.

Tony Gustavsson, Australia’s coach, expressed disappointment over his team’s inability to secure the bronze medal after a brilliant world cup campaign that won the hearts of the co-host’s fans.

“It’s a difficult moment to find the right words right now. We’re hurt, we wanted to bring a medal for this team, these fans and this nation.

“It’s now a second tournament that we played for a medal and missed out. Maybe we won something bigger than a medal, though.

“It’s difficult now but when we distance ourselves, I think we won something bigger than a medal,” he said.
