Two people, including a nine-month-old baby girl, have died, while many others were injured in a fatal road accident that occurred on Sunday at Uduma Junction in the Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Eyewitnesses said the accident involved a bus conveying about 25 passengers, including children, which lost control while navigating a sharp bend at high speed and collided with another vehicle.

The impact caused the bus to somersault three times, leaving several occupants severely injured.

The victims, all natives of Ebonyi State but residents of Imo State, were returning to their base after attending a burial ceremony at Okporike, Abakaliki, when the tragedy struck.

Spokesperson of the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH), Uburu, Agwu Nwogo, confirmed the incident, noting that the hospital promptly activated its emergency response system to treat the victims.

Nwogo disclosed that two passengers—a baby girl and an adult woman—were confirmed dead on arrival, while 23 others sustained varying degrees of injuries, including crushed hands, fractures, deep cuts, and traumatic brain injuries.

He said the child is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where an artificial respirator is supporting her due to failing respiration.

“The hospital management has expressed sadness over the incident and assured the public that everything possible is being done to ensure the injured receive the best medical care”, he added

“From the state capital, I traveled to Bokkos and spent time with the victims, the displaced children and others.

“What has happened in these communities is very saddening and utterly unacceptable.

“Nigerians should not be killed or forced to flee their homes when we are not at war. Every life is precious, and no Nigerian, regardless of where they live should have to live in fear or uncertainty.

“My deepest condolences go to the families and communities who have suffered tragic losses. No words can truly capture the pain and devastation that such senseless violence brings.

“My heart is with the people of Bokkos, the displaced children, women, and entire communities, during this difficult time.

“Earlier, the Obidient Movement had built a borehole to provide clean water for the IDP camp and the community, and we continued the support yesterday with the sum of 7.5 million naira to help in providing facilities for the displaced children, provide continuous education and on going needs of those affected.

Conman Badetito Obafemi jailed 24 months in U.S. for $300,000 romance scam

Georgia-based Nigerian conman Badetito Obafemi has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for his involvement in a years-long romance scam that netted him more than $300,000 in illicit money.

U.S. Chief District Judge Beth Phillips sentenced Mr Obafemi to two years’ imprisonment and three years of supervised release following incarceration and ordered him to pay restitution of $311,520 to his victims.

Mr Obafemi’s sentencing came almost a year after the 42-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering following his involvement in fake online relationships targeting vulnerable individuals across many cities in the United States in April 2024.

According to court documents seen by Peoples Gazette, Mr Obafemi admitted to participating in a romance scam by luring his victims into fraudulent relationships before asking for money from them for a variety of reasons, including business, medical and travel expenses and food.

Mr Obafemi acknowledged conspiring with other perpetrators to receive wire transfers from the victims, coordinating the necessary bank account information, the timing of transfers, and the transfer of funds across multiple accounts. Authorities said the crime spree occurred between June 2016 and at least March 2018.

Court documents showed Mr Obafemi received an estimated $311,520 in funds into his accounts and those of two businesses, EasyTickets, LLC, and Goeasy Logistics, LLC, including a lump sum of $27,460 stolen by the convict from a victim based Taney County in New Jersey.

He also attempted to convince the the victim to deposit another $40,000, purportedly to pay a court in South Africa for his release from jail, but was unsuccessful.

Court jails nine internet fraudsters in Edo

Justice A.N. Erhabor of the Edo State High Court, sitting in Benin City, has sentenced nine internet fraudsters to jail, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed in a statement on Friday.

The anti-graft agency’s Benin zonal directorate secured the conviction of Desmond Aghanenu, Okolie Bright, Emeka Matthew, Anikwushe Calin, Precious Onyeka Okonkwo, Ojie Victor Emeka, Safety Tamarakuro Austin, Promise Osas Lucky, and Ebi Ferguson between March 27 and April 11, 2025.

According to the agency, the convicts—who were arrested in a sting operation following intelligence linking them to fraudulent internet activities—were prosecuted on separate one-count charges bordering on obtaining by false pretence, retention of proceeds of crime, and possession of fraudulent documents.

The charge against Desmond Aghanenu read: “That you Desmond Aghanenu (m) on or about the 14th of March, 2025 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did have in your possession, documents which you knew or ought to have known contained false pretence, thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 6 and 8 (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”

EFCC said all the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges read to them, prompting the prosecution counsel—F.A. Jirbo, I.M. Elodi, Isa K. Agwai, and Bala-Ribah—to pray the court to sentence them. However, counsel to the defendants pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, stating that they had become remorseful for their actions.

“Justice Erhabor convicted and sentenced Desmond Aghanenu, Okolie Bright, Emeka Matthew, Anikwushe Calin, Precious Onyeka Okonkwo, Ojie Victor Emeka, Safety Tamarakuro Austin, [and] Promise Osas Lucky to two years imprisonment each or pay a fine of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira) respectively, while Ebi Ferguson bagged three years imprisonment or pay a fine of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira),” the sentence read.

Michelle Obama dismisses divorce rumours

Michelle Obama has denied rumours of impending divorce with former US President Barack Obama, calling them baseless.

In a recent episode of Sophia Bush’s podcast “Work in Progress“, Michelle set the record straight, explaining that her decision to skip high-profile events like President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and President Donald Trump’s inauguration were simply personal choices.

She expressed frustration that people couldn’t fathom a grown woman making decisions for herself without it being attributed to marital issues.

“That’s the thing that we as women, I think we struggle with: disappointing people. I mean, so much so that this year people were, you know, they couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.

“That this couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right?’ she continued.

Obama added: ‘That’s what society does to us.’

Michelle emphasised the importance of independence and self-empowerment, revealing that she’s now making choices solely for herself, a departure from her earlier life as First Lady and wife.

She’s prioritising personal growth, self-discovery and her personal desires.

The former First Lady also touched on societal expectations and how they impact women’s decisions.

She believed that society often labels women’s independence as “negative and horrible” when it doesn’t fit traditional stereotypes.

“We start actually, finally going, “What am I doing? Who am I doing this for?” And if it doesn’t fit into the sort of stereotype of what people think we should do, then it gets labeled as something negative and horrible.’

‘So you know, now is the time for me to start asking myself these hard questions of who do I truly want to be every day,’ she said.

Michelle said that looks ‘like whatever I want it to look like.’

“And I still find time to, you know, give speeches, to be out there in the world, to work on projects. I still care about girls’ education.

“We, you know, the library is opening a year from now.”

“But the interesting thing is that when I say no, for the most part, people are like, I get it, and I’m OK, right?” she added.

U.S. Supreme Court orders return of immigrant Trump ‘mistakenly’ deported to El Salvadoran prison

The United States Supreme Court has ordered President Donald Trump’s government to take steps to return Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran immigrant who was mistakenly deported to a prison camp in El Salvador last month back to the U.S.

According to the New York Times, an unsigned order by the apex court on Thursday stopped short of ordering the Trump administration officials to return Mr Garcia to the United States, indicating that courts may not have the power to require the executive branch to do so.

Judge Paula Xinis of the Federal District Court in Maryland had last week ordered that Mr Garcia must be returned to the United States by Monday after the Trump administration acknowledged their mistake in the process that saw the victim deported to the notorious Terrorism Confinement Centre in El Salvador.

Ms Xinis’ ruling prompted the Trump administration to approach the Supreme Court for intervention in the case, with the government arguing it would be difficult to facilitate Mr Garcia’s return to the States.

Although the Supreme Court did not explicitly order the repatriation of Mr Garcia from El Salvador, the apex court endorsed part of a trial judge’s order requiring the government to “facilitate and effectuate the return” of Mr Garcia.

“The order properly requires the government to ‘facilitate’ Abrego Garcia’s release from custody in El Salvador and to ensure that his case is handled as it would have been had he not been improperly sent to El Salvador,” the Supreme Court said in the ruling.

The court added, “The intended scope of the term ‘effectuate’ in the district court’s order is, however, unclear, and may exceed the district court’s authority.”

The case will now return to the trial court, and it is not clear whether and when Mr Garcia will be returned to the United States.

“As the Supreme Court correctly recognised, it is the exclusive prerogative of the president to conduct foreign affairs,” a Department of Justice spokesman said.

“By directly noting the deference owed to the executive branch, this ruling once again illustrates that activist judges do not have the jurisdiction to seize control of the president’s authority to conduct foreign policy.”

Meanwhile, Andrew Rossman, one of Mr Garcia’s lawyers, expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court’s action, stating, “The rule of law won today. Time to bring him home.”

Nightclub roof collapse death toll rises to 221; rescue search ends

The Dominican Republic authorities have said 221 people were killed when the roof of the iconic Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo collapsed on Tuesday. This came as rescue efforts and operations ended after the search for the bodies of the victims.

Juan Manuel Mendez, director of the country’s Emergency Operations Center, confirmed the latest death toll on Thursday.

“Today, we conclude the most difficult work in my 20 years as the head of the EOC,” Mr Mendez said.

An additional 189 people were also rescued from the rubble of the collapsed nightclub.

On Tuesday, the collapsed building occurred when hundreds of guests were inside the venue attending a concert by popular merengue singer Rubby Pérez.

Aside from Mr Pérez, others among the casualties are a provincial governor and the president of one of the country’s most important banks, as well as the right-handed baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel.

Scores of family members have been showing up at the site of the tragedy, hoping to find their missing loved ones since the collapsed nightclub occurred.

Homeroom Figueroa, the director of strategy and government communication, said officials have been moving to the phase of “understanding and explaining what happened without being quick to judge.”

According to him, the National Office for Seismic Assessment and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings will oversee a team of national and international experts to conduct a “technical study to understand with precision what happened” and “determine steps to follow in the area of justice.”

In a statement on Friday, Tochukwu Ikenga, the command’s spokesman, confirmed their arrests and detention.

Mr Ikenga noted that the accused’s intended acts could disrupt public safety and undermine Anambra’s security architecture.

He disclosed that the arrest and detention followed an investigation by the joint security force in Ihiala.

Mr Ikenga said the arrests were made possible because the command operatives acted on intelligence gathered over time regarding faceless individuals involved in threats of kidnapping, abduction, violence, and cyberstalking.

“Consequently, on Thursday, at about 2:53 p.m., our operatives arrested four male suspects, who are all residents of Okohia in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra,” Mr Ikenga stated.

The Nation reports on January 14, 2023, a fire broke out at the market, gutting over 25 shops.

The fire started from one shop and spread to others due to the late arrival of the fire fighters.

The cause was attributed to scavengers burning disused tires, which ignited nearby combustibles.

On December 20, 2024, another fire incident occurred with flames engulfing the market around 2 am.

The fire destroyed properties worth millions, and traders suffered heavy losses.

The cause of the fire was uncertain but early reports suggested it might have been triggered by an electrical fault.

On March 30, 2025, the market was engulfed in flames around 2 am. The fire destroyed properties worth millions and initial report didn’t give the immediate and remote cause of the incident.

The incidents have resulted in significant losses with traders anyways clamouring for enhanced safety measures in the market.
