No protest is allowed at Lekki tollgate – Lagos police

The Lagos state police command has warned against any form at Lekki Toll Gate.

In a statement released on Friday September 30 by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command stated that while it is not averse to the peoples’ right to freedom of assembly and association, and expression, it would equally live up to its mandate of ensuring that no person or group of persons infringe on the fundamental human rights of others, especially the rights to freedom of movement and right to dignity of human persons, especially under the guise of rally or procession.

The statement read;

“It has become imperative to reemphasise that no form of rally whatsoever will be allowed at the Lekki Toll gate on October 1, 2022.

“This emphasis has become necessary to enlighten Nigerians that might be misled into converging at the toll gate.

A court of competent jurisdiction has ruled that no person is allowed to converge at the Lekki Toll gate for whatever reason.

“In conformity with its mandate to protect life and property, the Lagos State Police Command under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, will leave no stone unturned in ensuring total compliance with the court order and an emplacement of adequate security in the state.

“The warning therefore goes that anyone found flouting the court order or infringing on the rights of other Nigerians will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

“Meanwhile, the CP enjoins all peace loving persons to go about their lawful duties without fear of harassment or intimidation, reiterating that adequate security assets have been strategically deployed to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians at designated rally venues and across the state at large.”

Bandits accept rice and beans in exchange for six hostages

Six hostages have been released by bandits in Birnin-Gwari area of Kaduna State, after they collected 20 mudu (measures) of rice, 20 mudu of beans, 25 litres of red oil, 25 litres of groundnut oil and recharge card of N10,000 as ransom.

The bandits had killed a farmer and abducted 20 persons from their farms in Jangali and Kwaga communities of Birnin-Gwari.

Confirming the release of the hostages yesterday September 29, Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressive Union (BEPU) chairman Ishaq Usman Kasai, said the bandits have equally told some farming communities to pay 12 million in levies before they would harvest their crops.

Kasai said;

“The four people of Unguwan Liman who were kidnapped on Saturday and one at Unguwan Shekarau were released yesterday Wednesday after payment of 2 million and N500,000, respectively.

“Five farmers kidnapped on Thursday 15/9/2022 at Kurgin Gabas and Sabon-Layi areas have luckily escaped from the kidnappers’ den after spending a week in captivity.

“Regrettably, a farmer was killed at Shiwaka community on Tuesday 27/9/2022 after being tied to a tree; and more than 20 people were kidnapped on Wednesday 28/9/2022.

“The bandits informed some farming communities including Kwaga, Kwanan-Shehu, Unguwan Liman and Unguwan Shekarau to pay levies of N12 million to be allowed to continue harvesting their crops. These communities were given until Friday (today) to meet the conditions, failing which they would kidnap any person found at a farm.

The Union found that these helpless communities have started making contribution based on farm size to meet the condition and the dateline.”

PDP NWC members return N122.4m to the party, claim it was paid into their accounts without their knowledge

Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Working Committee have returned about N122.4 million which they claimed was paid into their accounts without their knowledge, to the party.

The money was said to be part of the over N10 billion realised by the party from nomination fees paid by aspirants.

Channels Television reported that the NWC members who returned the money are the National Vice Chairman (South-West) Olasoji Adagunodo, the Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja; National Vice Chairman (South), Chief Dan Orbih and National Women Leader, Prof. Stella Affah-Attoe. While Adagunodo, Orbih and Effah-Attoe got N28.8 million each, Arapaja was paid N36 million. See their letters below;

Governors reject FG’s plan to privatize power plants

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) has kicked against Federal Government’s proposal to privatize National Integrated Power Plants (NIPPs).

The federal government is proposing to privatize the following power plants;

Benin Generation Company Ltd, Calabar Generation Company Ltd, Geregu Generation Company Ltd, Olorunsogo Generation Company Ltd and Omotosho Generation Company Ltd. Commenting on the proposal on Thursday September 29, outgoing NGF Chairman and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, said Governors opposed the plan because all stakeholders were not carried along in the scheme of things.

Fayemi said;

“We examined the issues relating to the proposed privatisation of the power project and we took a decision that at this point in time, the NGF is opposed to the sale of any of the plants until appropriate steps have been taken that would take into consideration the interest of states that are also equity holders in those plants.

“We’ll continue to do whatever we can to ensure the resources of Nigeria stay with the Nigerian people and are not filtered away in a manner we can’t explain.”

The NGF who also advised the Federal Government against sanctioning the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities, urged the federal government to rather resolve the contentious issues in the interest of the students and Nigeria.

Reps to dialogue with Buhari next week over ASUU strike – Gbajabiamila

The leadership of the House of Representatives will be meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on the resolution of the ongoing face-off between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila who made the announcement after a meeting with stakeholders, said they’ll be sharing a report of its interactions with key stakeholders in the dispute and come up with recommendations that will enable the President to view the issues at stake from an informed second option.

Those who attended the meeting include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha; the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Sen Chris Ngige; Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Folashade Yemi-Esan; the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Sylva Okolieaboh; the Director General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Ben Akabueze; the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, represented; as well as the Chairman, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta among others.

Also present was the delegation from ASUU led by its president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke.

Reiterating that the interest of the children that had been at the receiving end of the trade dispute should be paramount, Gbajabiamila appealed to both sides to give in and make concessions from their initial demands.

He said;

“We will put together our recommendations and our thoughts and take it to Mr. President, that’s why we are here to interface and look for solutions.

“Again let me repeat, we are running a government, nobody, no individual, no group, whether you are legislative, judiciary or whatever can be above the government, can be above the law.

“We can’t be against and I’m speaking specifically to ASUU, we did not say because the court has given judgment, that’s the end of our conversation. In spite of the court judgment, we are still looking for solutions, we didn’t even address it here, I don’t want to address it.

“Otherwise, we could’ve said, if government has given judgment, I don’t know if there’s a stay of execution, I don’t know.

“We are appealing to you, the Judiciary has spoken, the Executive has spoken, the Legislature is about to speak together with the Executive; everybody cannot be wrong and only one person is right.

For me I’m happy with the solution on UTAS, no victor, no vanquished, everybody is being carried along.“for the sake of emphasis, the House is pleading with you, let’s put all interest aside and look at the interest of our children.

“The white paper we told you we’ll get, the letter is here, it’s now waiting for the President’s final approval.

“On revitalization, I asked the DG budget here if provision has been made in the budget. We made a promise to you, and we are staying by that promise.

“Regarding the issue of UTAS, you said you haven’t seen the report; we have it here, so we’ve been working for you”.

Three EFCC lawyers, 59 others make SAN list

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee has announced the elevation of 62 lawyers to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

Among them are three lawyers engaged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, although two of them – Sylvanus Tahir and Rotimi Oyedepo – are employees of the EFCC.

But the other lawyer, Wahab Shittu, is engaged by the EFCC for specific cases.The LPPC, chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, released the list of the new SANs in a statement issued on Thursday by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Hajo Bello.

Among the successful candidates, 53 of them belong to the advocacy category while the other nine are of the academic category.

The statement said all the 62 lawyers would be inaugurated on November 21

The inauguration of new SANs usually takes place at the Supreme Court during the ceremony marking the commencement of the court’s new legal year.

The SAN rank is awarded as a mark of excellence to members of the legal profession who have distinguished themselves as advocates and academics.

Those to be sworn in as SANs from the advocacy category are Mohammed Abubakar, Johnson Omophe, Lawrence Oko-Jaja, Christopher Oshomegie, Sanusi Sai’d, Wahab Shittu, Emmanuel Idemudia, Diri Mohammed, Oladipo Tolani, Ayodeji Omotoso, Chijioke Erondu, Ajoku Obinna, Yakubu Maikasuwa and Henry Omu among others.

The academics are Prof. Kathleen Okafor, Prof. Muhammed Abdulrazaq, Prof. Amokaye Gabriel, Prof. Ismail Olatunbosun, Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, former Dean, Faculty of Law at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Joy Ezeilo, Ass/Prof. Theodore Maiyaki, Prof. Olaide Gbadamosi and Ass/Prof. Chimezie Okorie.

“The meeting further approved new guidelines for the conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and all matters about the rank to guide future exercises”, the statement added.

I won’t appeal judgement that removed me as Yobe North senatorial candidate – Senate President Ahmad Lawan

Senate President Ahmad Lawan has said that he won’t be appealing the court judgement that recognized Bashir Machina as the All Progressives Congress senatorial candidate for Yobe North.

In a statement released on Thursday September 29, Lawan said he has accepted the judgment of the court which disqualified his candidature and participation in the election.

According to him, he reached the decision after due consultations with his political associates, supporters and well-wishers.

The statement read;

“Yesterday, Wednesday, September 28, 2022, the Federal High Court in Damaturu delivered judgment on the rightful candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District for the 2023 National Assembly elections.

“The said judgement disqualifies my candidature and therefore my participation in the elections.

“After due consultations with my political associates, supporters and well-wishers, I have decided not to appeal against the judgement. I accept the judgement.

“I deem it appropriate to thank His Excellency, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam for the leadership role in the APC political family in Yobe State. I also thank His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni for the support and brotherhood.

“To my constituents, I thank you all for your unflinching support, loyalty and unreserved commitment to the course of building our people and Yobe North Senatorial District and indeed Yobe State.

“I want to assure you that I will continue to serve you in my personal and any other capacity at all times.

“We journeyed together for a long time, and this journey will remain a life long journey. It has been a wonderful relationship and it can only get stronger. I am indebted to you all. Alhamdulillah.”

Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara state has described bandits as animals that kill people who pose no harm to them.

Matawalle who justified the death penalty approved for anyone convicted of banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling, or cultism in the state when interviewed on Journalists’ Hangout, a TVC programme, said the state government has tried several approaches towards curbing banditry in the state, but such measures were not 100 percent successful.

He said;

“God knows I have adopted so many options for this crisis to leave the state, but unfortunately, there are good and bad people in any society.

“We’ve tried all we can. I’ve adopted so many options in the state and most of the options have yielded a lot of results.“I’ve done dialogue. I shut down the network.

We cut the food supply and we saw successes, but it’s not 100 percent. The bandits fear the Yansakai vigilante group because they use a fabricated weapon. They put motorcycle plugs into it.

Bandits fear that weapon; the weapon cuts the bandits into two.“They see Yansakai as the most devilish people. I know why I gave that directive and I’ve succeeded with that directive I’ve given.”

On if the death penalty is working and why he asked residents of the state to arm themselves, he said;

“Death penalty will work. I have signed it. Anyone found guilty will face the law. The death penalty might not be popular, but those killing people, is it popular?

“Why I said everyone should get a weapon is because these bandits are like animals. How can you see someone farming, and then go and kill him?”

“If we say our people should not carry arms, who will go and confront the bandits if not the people? Those who are saying the directive is bad, why can’t they go and save our people?

“As a governor, I can’t fold my arms and see my people being killed every day. It’s not possible. It’s one of the primary responsibilities of the governor to protect the lives and property of his people.”

Activist Aisha Yesufu found time this morning, to reply to a troll who attacked her on Twitter two years ago.

The troll had shared Yesufu’s family photo and stated that her two children did not participate in the EndSARS protest that rocked the country in October 2020.

Aisha spotted the Tweet this morning and sent a savage response.

Bashir Machina has been recognized as the candidate of Yobe North senatorial candidate following a judgement given by a Federal High Court sitting in Damaturu, Yobe state’s capital.

The All Progressives Congress was ordered by Justice Fadima Murtala Aminu to forward the name of Machina to the Independent and National Electoral Commission as the authentic winner of the primary held on 28/05/2022.

The Nation reported that the high court judge described the primary election where Senate President Ahmad Lawan emerged as the party’s senatorial candidate as a “phantom”.

Court stops Peter Obi’s supporters from converging at Lekki toll gate

Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the Labour Party and its supporters not to converge at the Lekki toll gate for the rally it plans to hold in the state on October 1st, 2022.

The court also directed the Inspector General of Police and the Lagos State Police Commissioner to ensure compliance with the order.

The judge issued the orders today while ruling on a motion for injunction brought by 10 plaintiffs, who are asking the court to, among others, restrain the LP, its presidential candidate Peter Obi, his vice Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, one Julius Abure, and their loyalists from holding the rally.

The court also held that while the rally cannot stop at the Lekki toll gate, it can pass through the venue to access Falomo Bridge and other venues at which the rally plans to meet.

A preliminary objection filed by the defendants seeking to stop the court from hearing the motion on the grounds that it lacked jurisdiction could however not be entertained as all parties to the suit had not been served.

The court adjourned the hearing of the substantive suit to November 4th.

In the suit, 10 plaintiffs through their Romeo Ese Michael, Esq. asked the court to, among others, restrain the LP, its presidential candidate Peter Obi, his vice Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, one Julius Abure, and their loyalists from holding their rally, until the hearing and determination of their Motion-On-Notice of September 12, 2022.

The plaintiffs include Adedotun Ajulo Esq., Salamatu Suleiman Lewi Esq., Hakeem Ijaduola, Esq., Ogunbona Akinpelu Esq., Owolabi K. Oluwasegun, Esq., Mogbojuri Kayode Esq., Wuyep Mantim Nadom Esq., Dimimu Mabel, Esq., Kolawole Salami, Esq. and Mr. Wale Abe Lawrence.

The 1st to 10th defendants are Obi, LP, Baba-Ahmed, Abure, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Commissioner of Police (Lagos State Command), Director-General (Department of State Services), Lekki Concession Company (LCC) Limited, Attorney-General of Lagos State and The Governor of Lagos State.

In the substantive suit, the plaintiffs argued among other things that a repeat or celebration of the “infamous” EndSARS protest of 2020 under the political guise of “#Obidatti23 Forward Ever Rally” will cause a breakdown of peace and will result in post-traumatic stress disorder for them and the public.

Kidnappers kill Bauchi lawmaker’s son

The eldest son of a member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly representing Dass Constituency, Bala Ali, has been killed by suspected kidnappers.

The lawmaker representing Burra Constituency, Ado Wakili, disclosed this during the House’s sitting on Tuesday, September 27, presided over by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Danlami Ahmed Kawule.

Abdul Burra, the Spokesperson for the Speaker of the House, Abubakar Suleiman, said the lawmaker who extended his condolences to the Members on the murder of his colleague’s son described the incident as “tragic,” and prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.

Punch reported that the speaker also announced that the lawmakers would pay a condolence visit to the member and his family immediately after the plenary.

Senate debates bill on rotation of power

Debate has commenced at the Nigerian senate over a bill that seeks an act to provide for the rotation of power between the six geopolitical zones of the country.

The bill sponsored by Senator Abba Moro from Benue South, passed its first reading earlier this year.

While some Senators argued that it will bring about unity and a sense of belonging for all especially ethnic minorities, others claimed it goes against the Constitution of Nigeria.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan however advised the sponsor of the Bill to stand the Bill down and rework it for representation with specific prayers.

Gunmen attack Enugu Labour Party meeting

Gunmen suspected to be political thugs have again disrupted a meeting of the Labour Party in Enugu State.

The attack, it was gathered, took place on Saturday at Nomeh Primary School in Nkanu East Local Government Area of the state.

That was the third time in less than two months that gunmen would be attacking supporters of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the state.

The state chairman of the party, Mr Casmir Agbo, who confirmed the attack to our correspondent on the telephone on Monday, said the party had reported the incident to the appropriate quarters.

“Our members were attacked by gunmen wielding AK-47 rifles in Nomeh Primary School on Saturday,”

he simply said without giving further details.Efforts to get the reaction of the state police command were unsuccessful as the command’s spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, did not take his calls.

A political analyst and social commentator, Charles Ogbu, called on the Nigerian Police Force to live up to the expectations and protect the people.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has sent his condolence to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, over the deathof his elder brother and Emir of Bashar, Alhaji Adamu Idris.

The late Emir died on Sunday aged 96.Tinubu expressed this on Monday in a statement by his media office and signed by Mr Tunde Rahman.

The statement read, “The All Progressives Congress Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has sent messages of sympathy and condolence to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, over the passing of his elder brother and Emir of Bashar, Alhaji Adamu Idris.

“While praying for the repose of the soul of the late traditional ruler, the APC presidential standard-bearer also prayed that Almighty Allah comfort the deputy speaker and the family left behind by the deceased.”

Strike hindered disbursement of bursary to education undergraduates ? FG The Federal Ministry of Education has said that the disbursement of bursary to students of education in universities in the country, was hindered by the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

This was disclosed by the Permanent secretary of the ministry, Andrew Adejo, during the 2022 World Teachers Day press briefing held in Abuja. Adejo said;

“The implementation of the payment of stipends has commenced.”However, due to the strike, we have not been able to get the data of all the students in universities. We only have 7 per cent of the required data to be processed for payment.

“I must state here that the national implementation of the New National Teaching Policy has commenced.

It is a holistic package that will ultimately address the career path, remuneration, professional teaching standards, qualification, deployment and management of teachers.

“The theme for the year 2022 WTD which is ‘the transformation of education begins with teachers’ strongly stresses the importance of empowering teachers for the effective transformation of education to ensure quality teaching and learning as well as galvanize technological advancements to meet the ever-changing needs for national growth and development.”

President Muhammadu Buhari had through the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu announced that undergraduates of B.Ed/B.A. Ed/BSc.

Ed in Public institutions are to receive stipends of N75,000.00 per semester while NCE students will get N50,000.00 as stipends per semester.
