Ex-finance minister Peña wins Paraguay’s presidential election

Santiago Peña, the governing conservative Colorado party candidate, has won the presidential election in Paraguay.

The 44-year-old had 42.8 per cent of votes, with nearly all ballots counted, the national electoral authority said on Sunday.

According to the electoral authority, Mr Peña, a former finance minister, had a 15-point lead over centre-left rival Efraín Alegre, 60, from the Concertacion coalition.

Over the past 76 years, Partido Colorado has lost just one election in the South American country – it was not in power from 2008 to 2013.

Five years ago, Alegre lost to Mario Abdo Benítez, the outgoing incumbent.

Abdo Benítez was not allowed to stand again for constitutional reasons – the president is only allowed one term.

Paraguay has almost seven million inhabitants and, along with Bolivia, is the only country in South America without access to the sea.

It’s main exports are soy, electricity and beef.

In addition to the president, the Senate, the Chamber of Deputies and governors were newly elected on Sunday.

According to the electoral authority, the Colorado party also appeared to have defended its majority in parliament.

Buhari is not aware of promises made to Nigerians by support groups in 2015 – Femi Adesina

President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesperson, Femi Adesina has said that his principal is not aware of some of the promises made by some support groups to get him elected in 2015.

Commenting on some of the promises made during the 2015 campaign during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, April 27, Adesina insisted that what happened in 2015 was that there was a rash of documents passing off as the All Progressives Party manifesto.

He said;

“What happened in 2015 was that there was a rash of documents passing off as the party’s manifesto.

“You didn’t know which one was from the party or a support group. For instance, there was a document, ‘100 things Buhari will do in 100 days’. It was when I resumed as his media adviser that I asked him about that document and he knew nothing about it.

“I’m not strictly a party person, so I do not know if some promises are part of the manifesto. But I know that each party would have promises before being elected into power and whoever is elected to power must key into those promises.

“What I’m telling you is that as at 2015, there were various types of documents which even the party didn’t know because there were many support groups who came out with their own promises.”

Adesina added that Buhari couldn’t fulfill some of his pre-election pledge due to sad economic realities.

He said;

“A country can only spend the money it has, it can’t spend the money it doesn’t have. When the realities of the economy change, you have to adjust and do what you are able to do according to the realities of the economy.”

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday, April 26, threw out the lawsuit filed before it by Senator Aisha Dahiru Ahmed (Binani), the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the last governorship election in Adamawa State.

Binani had approached the court to seek a judicial review of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to reverse her initial announcement as the winner of the election by the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).

Recall that the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Yunusa Ari, had declared Binani as the winner of the supplementary poll held on April 15 even while the collation of results was ongoing.

Binani went on to give an acceptance speech.

The electoral body immediately released a statement nullifying Ari’s declaration and has written to the police to investigate him.

INEC has since declared the incumbent governor, winner.

Zelensky extended the invitation in a congratulatory message addressed to Tinubu. Zelensky, in his message, said his war-torn country is determined to further strengthen cooperation with Nigeria.

The letter reads;

“Please accept my sincere congratulations on your election as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Despite extremely difficult testing times, caused by the full-scale armed aggression of Russia against our state, Ukraine is determined to further strengthen cooperation with Nigeria at the bilateral level and within the framework of international organizations.We are grateful for your country’s support of the Resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization

“Principles of the UN Charter underlying a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace in Ukraine.I count on the active participation of Nigeria in its practical implementation. We see the further provision of global food security, of which Ukraine was and remains a reliable guarantor at the global level, as an important direction of cooperation.

The fulfillment of this task will be facilitated by the successful implementation of the Ukrainian initiative “Grain from Ukraine”, which is designed to significantly increase the supply of grain to African countries in order to prevent famine.

Taking this opportunity, I invite you to pay an official visit to Ukraine at a time convenient for you.I am confident that your visit will strengthen the dialogue between our countries and contribute to further consolidation of joint efforts of the international community aimed at solving the urgent challenges of today, in particular the crisis situation caused by Russia regarding these guarantees of world food security.”

On March 1, INEC declared Tinubu the winner of the 2023 presidential election after he polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat his closest rivals, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 6,984,520 votes, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) secured 6,101,533 votes.

INEC denies Binani’s claim of collusion with Adamawa government

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied allegation of colluding with Adamawa state government to rig the governorship election in favour of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

Recall that while denying allegation of giving out a N2 billion bribe to an INEC official for her to be announced as winner of election, Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) alleged that some INEC officials paid a “nocturnal visit” to the government house before Ahmadu Fintiri, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was declared the winner of the poll on Tuesday, April 18.

Reacting to the allegation made by Binani, INEC stated that such meeting didn’t hold and that it appointed and retained only one returning officer for the governorship election who also doubled as the state collation officer for the presidential election.

The statement from the electoral umpire read;

“Like all Returning Officers nationwide, he was issued with a letter of appointment by the Commission and the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State was duly informed. The list of Collation Officers was also forwarded to the State with every page of the list personally endorsed by the Chairman of the Commission well ahead of the arrival of the National Commissioners.

“Similarly, the same Press Statement created the impression that the national headquarters of the Commission specifically targetted Adamawa State in its deployment of National Commissioners and other officials with the sole intention of influencing the outcome of the supplementary election held on Saturday 25th April 2023 and sidelining the REC. Nothing can be further from the truth.

“For the record, it has been the standard policy and practice of the Commission to deploy National Commissioners, RECs and other staff from the headquarters or neighbouring States for supplementary or off-cycle elections where doing so is considered necessary.

“In the case of Adamawa State where supplementary governorship election was held in 69 polling units, two National Commissioners were deployed while for Kebbi State involving 142 polling units, three National Commissioners were deployed. Similarly, one National Commissioner each was deployed to Sokoto, Zamfara, Imo, Rivers, Ekiti and Ogun States.

“This has been the standard practice of the Commission of which all RECs are informed in advance. Therefore, Adamawa State was not specifically targeted. In all other States, the RECs worked cooperatively with the National Commissioners except in Adamawa State for reasons that are now obvious to all.

“The public is advised to discountenance these insinuations as nothing more than a claptrap. We also advise those behind the mischief to desist forthwith as such fabrications have endangered the lives of our officials (both ad hoc and regular) engaged in legitimate election duties. We expect well-meaning citizens to act within the bounds of propriety and decency.”
