Suspected herdsmen attack Edo communities, kill seven

Seven people including farmers, have been reportedly killed by armed gunmen suspected to be herdsmen at Ugboke, Oshodi, Okokodo, Ariyan and Yoruba Camp in Ovia North-East local government area of the state.

The attacks were said to have taken place on Wednesday night.

Confirming the invasion of the herdsmen in the communities in a statement on Thursday, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor, said all efforts were being made to arrest the perpetrators of the dastardly act and bring them to justice.

“The DPO and his operatives visited the crime site and evacuated the bodies while moves are on to ensure that the place is calm and lives return to normalcy.”

According to a resident of the Ugboke community, Janet Ighodaro, the residents were caught unawares by the blood-thirsty herdsmen.

“The suspected herdsmen took over the popular Yoruba camp located in Ovia North-East as a base to launch attack into various communities in our state.

Four of the victims were returning from their farms when they were shot and killed on the spot.

“I was lucky to escape and I am currently in Benin where I am putting up with family members.”

She lamented that the gruesome attack on the camps and communities was reported to the police, adding that security presence in the locality was zero.

Ighodaro stressed that the policemen, who came to the area on Thursday after the dastardly act, only stopped at Okokhua community and refused to go further to track down the suspects.

Tinubu calls for peace in Nigeria

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Friday called for peace among all ethnic and religious groups in Nigeria.

Tinubu made the call during the Eighth-Day Fidau Prayer for the late first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande.

The event was also attended by former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba; former Inspector-General of Police, Musliliu Smith; the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; and his Ekiti State counterpart, Kayode Fayemi; among others.

The APC chieftain said the country was facing a crisis and urged Nigerians to live in harmony and give peace a chance.

He said: “Nigeria is currently facing a crisis; a crisis of insurgency, banditry in all aspects of security, but God Almighty that made this country one of the largest and most resourceful countries will protect us.

“I appeal, in his (Jakande) memory today, for us not to turn whatever challenges we are facing right now into ethnic, tribal, and religious crises.

If there is a crisis, where do we go? We will submerge entire West Africa. There will be no enough space to accommodate us.

“Those who have seen the effect of war, the effect of tribal conflict, of religious conflict, will never want it for Nigeria.

“We pray to God to strengthen our mind, guide our faith, put peace and bring peace unto this land, may Allah bless all of us.”

Tinubu said the religious leaders are very critical in the present situation and urged them to continue their prayers, commitment, and fasting for the peace and stability in the country.

The ex-Lagos governor described the death of the late Jakande as not just a loss to the family but Lagos and the country in general.

Tinubu said Lagos and Nigeria were lucky to have a man like the late former governor and drew from his wealth of knowledge.

“Today, he is no more but he still exists to eternity. We pray for Lagos State, we pray for Nigeria to give us more people, more leaders that are prudent, honest, and give priority to the world in the future,” the APC chieftain concluded.

Kogi varsity workers begin three-day warning strike

Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, (SSANU), Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State, on Tuesday, commenced a three-day warning strike.

The peaceful protest by the Kogi varsity workers is a notice to the Federal Government due to its failure to implement the eight-point Memorandum of Understanding entered into by the parties.

In a statement by chairman of the Kogi University workers, SSANU/Joint Action Committee, Uche Onyedi, the members threatened a complete shutdown of the institution.

It read, “You recall that the JAC of NASU and SSANU had a 14-days warning strike which started from midnight of 4th of October and ended on 12 midnight 18th of October, 2020.

“As a result of the warning strike by NASU/SSANU, an eight-point MoU was signed by JAC of SSANU and NASU on one hand, other stakeholders of the Federal Government on the other hand, at the instance of the Federal Ministry of LaLolbour and Employment, Abuja, on the 20th of October, 2020, in which a committee was constituted to look at our demands with a view to mapping out ways of solving them.

Very unfortunately, the Federal Government reneged on its promises to implement the agreements contained in the MoU.

“You are aware that there are glaring inconsistencies in the IPPIS payment platform, non-payment of allowances, non-payment of arrears of minimum wage consequential adjustments, delay in renegotiation of the 3009 agreements, very poor funding of state-owned universities, lack of visitation panels to universities for a very long time, non-payment of retirement benefits.

“We are asking the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency implement the MoU now, to avoid closing down the university for another year.”

“AMERICA IS BACK”– US SECRETARY OF STATE

“America is back” and is fully engaged in helping resolve issues including the pandemic, climate change and Iran’s nuclear ambitions, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has told the BBC.

In his first international interview, Mr Blinken stressed the importance of worldwide vaccination against Covid-19.

He also criticised China for its lack of transparency in uncovering how the coronavirus emerged.

It marks a break with the “America First” policy of Donald Trump.

Mr Blinken was speaking as the leaders of the G7 richest industrialised nations met in virtual session.

The US is giving $4bn (£2.85bn) to the Covax vaccination scheme, which aims to deliver more than two billion doses to people in 190 countries in less than a year.

“Unless and until everyone in the world is vaccinated, then no-one is really fully safe, because if the virus is out there and continuing to proliferate, it’s also going to be mutating,” Mr Blinken said.

“And if it’s mutating, it’s also going to come back and bite people everywhere.”

The US has now vaccinated more than 27 million of its own people. However, in many poorer countries, vaccination has yet to begin.

Mr Blinken also accused China of failing to share information that might shed light on the origins of the coronavirus.

A team of investigators from the World Health Organization (WHO) spent four weeks in China on a fact-finding mission at the beginning of 2021. However, two experts from the WHO team said afterwards that China refused to grant full access to the data they sought.

The secretary of state said a better health security system was needed to spot pandemics before they fully emerged.

“It requires countries to be transparent. It requires them to share information. It requires them to give access to international experts at the beginning of an outbreak – things that unfortunately we haven’t seen from China,” he said.

#EndSARS: Lagos panel awards N20m to two victims of police brutality.

Two petitioners have been awarded N10 million each , as compensation by the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Restitution and Inquiry. The panel was set up to investigate cases of police brutality especially involving officers of the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

The two petitioners, Kudirat Obayomi and Hannah Olugbodi were awarded the compensation on Friday.

Olugbodi, a 35-year-old hairdresser, had on November 2020, narrated how she ended up on a crutch after her left leg was shattered by a stray bullet fired by some men of the disbanded police Special Anti-Robbery Squad who were attempting to arrest a young man with tattoos in June 2018 at the Ijeshatedo area of Lagos.

NLC set for strike in states that refuse to pay N30,000 minimum wage

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), has resolved to embark on strikes in states that have refused to pay its workers the N30,000 minimum wage earlier agreed upon.

In a communique signed by the NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba and and the General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Thursday in Abuja, the labour union described the failure of some state governments to implement the new national minimum wage as an act of criminality and betrayal of office.

The NLC added that some state governments were also yet to conclude negotiations on consequential salary adjustment owing to the new national minimum wage.

The communique reads:

“The NEC warned that it would take very drastic action against state governments that have refused to pay the new national minimum wage and minimum pension which benefit had already been eroded by the escalating inflation in the country.

“The NEC also resolved to view the refusal to pay the new national minimum wage by state governments as demanded by the law as an act of criminality, betrayal of the oath of office sworn by state chief executives and a dangerous adventure in anarchy.

“The NEC-in-Session directed all states where the national minimum wage of N30,000 is yet to be paid to immediately proceed on industrial action.”

EFCC closes case against ex-NBA president, Usoro, in alleged N1.4bn fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Thursday closed its case in the alleged N1.4 billion money laundering trial of former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President Paul Usoro (SAN) at the Federal High Court, Lagos.

The case was closed after taking the evidence of EFCC’s second witness.

EFCC legal counsel Uduak Kufre told Justice Rilwan Aikawa of the Federal High Court in Lagos that the prosecution was pleased with the evidence it had put forward in the case.

He prayed the court to discharge the agency’s second and last witness, Mr. Mohammed Arabo.

Responding, Mr. Effiong O. Effiong (SAN), who led three other Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), including Shina Sofola, as counsel to Usoro, informed the court of the defendant’s intention to file a “no case” submission.

Justice Aikawa adjourned till March 12 for adoption of the “no case” submission.

Paul Usoro was first arraigned for the alleged offence on December 18, 2018, before Justice Muslim Hassan of the same court.

He was re-arraigned on March 1, 2019 on a 10-count charge bordering on laundering money for some Akwa Ibom State government officials to the tune of N1.4 billion.

One of the counts against the defendant reads: “That you, Paul Usoro, SAN, Emmanuel Udom (currently constitutionally immune against criminal prosecution), Uwemedimo Thomas Nwoko (still at large), Nsikan Linus Nkan, Commissioner of Finance, Akwa Ibom State (still at large), Mfon Jacobson Udomah, Accountant-General, Akwa Ibom State (still at large) and Margaret Thompson Ukpe (still at large), sometime in 2015 in Nigeria, conspired…to commit an offence, to wit: conversion of N1,410,000,000,000 property of the Government of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria.”

Donald Trump  and his wife have been pictured for the first time since the couple left the White House.

The former President, 74, and First Lady, 50, were pictured posing for selfies with fans on Valentine’s Day  in the Mar-a-Lago resort dining room on Sunday.

The couple were last seen together when they arrived in Florida after snubbing Joe Biden’s inauguration last month.

Their outing on Valentine’s Day came hours the former US president was acquitted by the Senate in his second impeachment trial over his role in the 6 January attack on the US Capitol.

My Leg May Be Amputated If Not Granted Bail, Maina Tells Court.

Maina, through his counsel, Sani Katu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, told Justice Okon Abang at the resumed trial.
A former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reformed Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, on Friday told the Federal High Court, Abuja, that his leg might be amputated if not granted bail to have adequate medicare.

Maina, through his counsel, Sani Katu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, told Justice Okon Abang at the resumed trial.
Katu said his client was taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, because of his worsening health condition and the medical report was exhibited in the bail application.

The lawyer, who said that Kuje Correctional Centre where Maina was kept did not have the facility to attend to his state of health, added that if not granted bail, his leg might be amputated.

Maina had, on January 20, approached Justice Abang for another bail after his arrest for jumping the first bail.

Maina, in a motion on notice dated and filed on December 24, 2020, brought by one of his lawyers, Anayo Adibe, said the application became necessary over his worsening health condition.

In the motion, the ex-pension boss told the court that he had reasonable and responsible sureties who were willing to act as sureties if granted bail.

‘How N159m meant for sensitization of youths was diverted,’ Witness in Turaki’s trial tells court

Bello Hamma Adama, the 12th prosecution witness in the trial of former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki for alleged N714 million fraud revealed on Thursday how N159,104,000 out of the N329,104,000 meant for the sensitization of Muslim youths was diverted in 2015.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Turaki and his special assistant Sampson Okpetu on a 16-count charge of fraud.

Other defendants are – Samtee Essentials Limited and Pasco Investment Limited.

Bello, an operative attached to the Chairman of the EFCC Monitoring Unit, while being led in evidence by M. S. Abubakar, drew the court’s attention to the second defendant (Okpetu) statement in which he admitted transferring the said sum on the instructions of Turaki.

My boss’ name is Kabiru T. Turaki, and he gave me the instruction to transfer the money into Abdulrahman Yusuf and K.T Turaki and Co. firm. The instruction was verbal, I don’t know what Abdulrahmad did with the money, I also don’t know what my boss had done with the money. I was only instructed by my boss to liaise with Engr. Kabiru to make sure the job was executed. I transferred some money into Engr. Kabir’s account, an account I can’t remember, for the execution of the contract,” the witness quoted the second defendant as saying in the statement.

He noted that it was instructive that “the money was received from the Ministry of labour and the first defendant was then the supervising minister of the ministry.

Bello also told the court that Turaki confirmed that he was the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs as well as supervising Minister for the Ministry of Labour within the period of the investigation.

Justice Inyang Ekwo thereafter adjourned the matter till April 19, 20, and 21 for cross-examination of the witness and continuation of trial.

Fulani group backs Bauchi gov on herdsmen carrying AK-47 rifles

A Fulani group, the Allah Kautal Hore Fulani Socio-Cultural Association, has thrown its weight behind the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, following his comments that herdsmen carry AK-47 to defend themselves against attacks by cattle rustlers.

National secretary of the group, Saleh Alhassan said in a statement on Thursday in Kaduna State, that Governor Mohammed was the “lone voice among his peers in the North in defence of Fulani herdsmen who are being persecuted across Nigeria.”

The statement titled, ‘His Excellency Abdulkadir Bala Mohammed – Executive Governor, Bauchi State: The gradual emergence of a courageous northern leader’, reads:

Governor Bala Mohammed has treaded where angels are scared to tread in the past.

“He has taken what every politician will consider as political risk in the past by holding divergent views where others have failed or chickened out.

“So, his current position on the herders/farmers conversation is not strange or out of context.

Govenor Bala Mohammed has refused to be like Governor of Benue State, H.E. Samuel Ortom, whose only achievement is the raising of ethnic militia and gang leaders that have been visiting mayhem of killings in his state.

“He has not achieved anything tangible apart from his obnoxious anti-open grazing law in the state.

“Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu will be held accountable for the ongoing genocide against innocent pastoralist and northerners living in the South-West.

“He claims to be a senior lawyer but he has proven to be a disgrace to the legal profession by his actions against Fulani herdsmen in his state in the recent past weeks.

Akeredolu created the Amotekun Corps to unleash terror on herders and Northerners in the south-western states of Ondo and Oyo.

“The Allah Kautal Hore Fulani Socio-Cultural Association stands with H.E Bala Mohammed since he is the only voice who speaks for the Fulani people and his intervention on the ongoing farmer/herders’ conflict was simply to state the obvious devoid of the current politicisation.”

PDP demands minister’s sack for asking Nigerians to defend themselves from criminals

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday demanded the sack of the Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (retd), for asking Nigerians to defend themselves against bandits, Boko Haram terrorists, kidnappers, and other criminal elements in the country.

The PDP in a statement issued by his National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, described the minister’s statement as reckless and irresponsible.

Magashi had on Wednesday challenged Nigerians not to leave the fight against insecurity to the military alone.

He said: “Well, security is not the responsibility of the military alone. It is the responsibility of everybody to be alert and ensure safety when necessary. We shouldn’t be cowards. Sometimes the bandits come with about three rounds of ammunition and when they fire shots everybody will run. In our younger days, we stand to fight any form of aggression.

“Why should people run away from minor, minor aggressions? We should stand and face them. If these people know that the people have the competence and capability to defend themselves, they will run away.”

But the PDP argued that the statement was a confirmation that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has “surrendered to outlaws and lacked the determination to fight them.”

The party said: “It is unthinkable that a government would describe unarmed victims of armed aggression of terrorist and bandits as “cowards” while those who were elected and given the necessary resources to defend them recede in the comfort and safety of their offices in Abuja.

Such disposition to security; a statutory responsibility of government, goes to validate apprehensions that our nation is indeed descending to a failed state under the Buhari Presidency, where the government can no longer perform its duties while unarmed citizens are left to confront bandits and warlords.

“Given the silence by the Buhari Presidency, our party holds that the defeatist comment by the minister represents the disposition of President Muhammadu Buhari and his security architecture, and explains why the administration has remained complacent in the fight against terrorism and banditry in our country.

Such statement by the Buhari administration, at the time it ought to be scaling up its security strategies to guarantee the safety of all Nigerians, have been emboldening bandits, terrorists and kidnappers to escalate their acts atrocities against our compatriots.

“Moreover, with such disposition, the Buhari administration is creating a lucrative job for bandits, terrorists and kidnappers who are settled with huge ransom instead of being faced with firepower.

“Our party however urges Nigerians not to despair at this moment but brace up as it has become obvious that we are now in a despondent situation where the government has shown that it can no longer defend the citizens.

PDP to hold zonal congresses March 6

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has approved March 6 for the conduct of its zonal congresses in the six geo-political zones.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja.

He said the NWC has fixed February 25 for the submission of nomination forms for aspirants seeking election into various national positions in the party.

Ologbondiyan said: “Forms are to be submitted to the PDP Directorate of Mobilisation and Organising.

“The PDP charges our leaders, members, and teeming supporters to continue to work hard in the collective effort to win elections.”

Texas Senator Ted Cruz flew to Mexico despite state energy crisis

Texas Senator Ted Cruz flew to Mexico with his family amid a winter weather crisis that has left millions in his state without power.

In a statement on Thursday, Mr Cruz said that he planned the trip for his daughters, “wanting to be a good dad”.

Photos of the Republican lawmaker at an airport emerged on Twitter on Wednesday, fuelling reports that he had left Texas amid the energy crisis.

Texas has seen power and water outages due to the uncommonly frigid weather.

The high profile Republican has drawn quick criticism for taking an international trip amid the weather emergency in his state.

“People in Texas are literally freezing to death and yet Ted Cruz went on vacation to Cancun,” wrote Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal on Twitter.

How has Cruz defended his trip?

In a written statement released on Thursday afternoon, Mr Cruz described an “infuriating week for Texans”.

With schools closed in the state, the senator said he booked the vacation for his young daughters who “asked to take a trip with friends”.

Mr Cruz did not apologise for making the trip amid the state of emergency in Texas, but said that he and his staff “are in constant communication with state and local leaders to get to the bottom of what happened in Texas.”

image captionMr Cruz said he will return to Texas on Thursday

The Republican will be returning to Texas on Thursday afternoon, according to his statement. It is not clear if his return flight was originally scheduled for Thursday or is a change in plans.

As a federal lawmaker, Mr Cruz does not have a direct role in Texas’ emergency response, but residents often reach out to their elected officials – like Mr Cruz – during natural disasters for help accessing resources.

The Houston Police Department told CBS News that a member of Mr Cruz’s staff contacted authorities on Wednesday to request assistance upon Mr Cruz’s arrival at Houston’s international airport.

The senator arrived at the airport on Wednesday, Chief Art Acevedo said, and officers “monitored his movements through the terminal”.

What’s the reaction been?

The senator’s travel plans amid the crisis in Texas drew immediate criticism online.

“Ted Cruz not only fled the state while millions of vulnerable Texans are without heat and water but specifically diverted police resources to get him through security and crowds faster for his outgoing vacation flight,” wrote progressive rights activist Charlotte Clymer on Twitter.

Journalist David Shuster shared a photo of a man who appears to be Mr Cruz boarding a plane, noting that millions of Texans “remain without electricity/water and are literally freezing”.

Buhari names journalist, Ogbonnaya Orji, as new NEITI boss

Veteran journalist and former director with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Dr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, has been appointed the new Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The appointment which was announced in a statement on Thursday by the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Willie Basset, will take effect from Friday, February 19.

The statement also indicated that Orji’s appointment is for a five-year term, adding that it was done in accordance with provisions of the NEITI Act.

Orji, who, until his new appointment was the Director of Communications and Advocacy at NEITI, takes over from the immediate past Executive Secretary of the organisation, Waziri Adio, whose term expired early this week.

The statement reads:

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji as the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) for a single term of five (5) years in accordance with the provision of Section 12 (2) (a) and 6 (3) of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (Establishment) Act, 2007.

“The appointment takes effect from 19th February, 2021. Until the appointment, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji was the Agency’s Director of Communications & Advocacy.

“He began his career at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and also worked with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) where Dr. Orji managed several donor-funded projects.

He holds MSc degree and PhD in Political Economy and International Development from the University of Abuja.

“NEITI was established in 2004 as the key Anti-Corruption Agency at the Presidency responsible for enthroning transparency, accountability and governance of the country’s oil, gas and mining industries.

“Mr. President enjoins the new appointee to serve the nation with all sense of responsibility, honesty, diligence and promote good governance in the discharge of his duties.”

Bello reveals how he handles security challenges in Kogi

The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello on Thursday explained how he handles insecurity in his state, revealing that he does not go to Abuja for solutions.

The governor, who spoke on Thursday morning while appearing on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ programme, added that the stakeholders in the state collaborate with security agencies to analyse intelligence to forestall breakdown of law and order.

He said: “The Nigeria Police that are in the country today are the same in Kogi State. The Army in the country are the same in Kogi State. All the law enforcement agencies we have in the country today are exactly what I have in Kogi State.

We are corroborating, the commissioner of police, my director (of) DSS, my Army commander, my naval commander, civil defence commander, we are corroborating and they are relating very well with the citizens, they connected to the people and leadership at all levels are doing their best starting from the community leaders, ward leaders, the local government chairmen and leaders, youth leaders, market leaders, farmers and what have you. We are corroborating very well.

“So, when they provide such information, we act on it, we don’t pay lip service, we don’t pass buck, we don’t visit Abuja for solutions at all times. I don’t think there is any day I have ever visited Abuja for any solution. What I do is to sit down here (Kogi) and do my job.”

The governor spoke against the backdrop of current state of insecurity across the country with the seeming helplessness of state governors to nip it in the bud, as they keep running to the Federal Government for help.

Though Kogi has remained one of the hot beds of kidnapping and farmers/herdsmen crisis, Governor Bello believes his strategy has been effective.

Tension As Nigerian Military Conducts Air Strikes In Orlu In Search Of ESN (Eastern Security Network).

SaharaReporters learnt that the airstrikes started on Thursday noon, and are connected with the military’s resolve to dislodge the Eastern Security Network operatives said to have strongholds in the forests.

Military fighter jets believed to be deployed by the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force are conducting aerial strikes in Orlu communities in Imo State, which has worsened the already built-up tension in the areas.

SaharaReporters learnt that the airstrikes started on Thursday noon, and are connected with the military’s resolve to dislodge the Eastern Security Network operatives said to have strongholds in the forests.

The ESN operatives in January had a bloody clash with the Nigerian Army from Obinze barracks, where four soldiers were reportedly killed.

A video of the aerial bombardments on Thursday surfaced with fresh tension and anxiety building in the communities.

“Nigerian soldiers are currently conducting aerial strikes in our areas. Many innocent lives may be lost. They are probably looking for ESN operatives who are checking the activities of killer Fulani herdsmen,” a community head told SaharaReporters.

“People’s homes and market places may be affected. We don’t need aircraft in Orlu. They should go and find the stolen school pupils in Niger State,” another angry resident said.

“I have the video. There was an aircraft firing shots possibly in a nearby bush. Very reckless of the airforce; civilians are all over the place,” another person said.

SaharaReporters last December reported that the Nigerian Army deployed combat helicopters, gun trucks, and soldiers to search some suspected forests in the South-East states where the ESN, launched by Nnamdi Kanu, was said to be camping.

SaharaReporters also reported that the military search had been going on for days, and had no time frame, as the army was acting on “orders from above.”

A video, from the drones and hidden cameras believed to be installed by the ESN, had captured the Nigerian Army helicopters and their vehicles and soldiers searching for the camp of the ESN for possible arrests.

Kanu, leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, on December 12, launched the ESN, saying the regional security outfit, just like Amotekun in the South-West, would help to tackle crimes and criminalities.

“The Nigerian Army that is supposed to fight Boko Haram was seen everywhere searching for the camp of Eastern Security Network team. But they forgot they are dealing with sophisticated men. There are cameras and drones everywhere watching them,” an official had said.

Teachers threaten strike over attacks on schools

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has threatened to go on strike in states where schools are being attacked and students and teachers abducted in the country.

The union made the threat on Wednesday while expressing regret over the abduction of students and teachers of the Goverment Secondary School, Kangara, Niger state.

Calling on the Federal Government to urgently declare a state of emergency on the security situation in the country, the NUT warned that it “will not hesitate to withdraw the services of all teachers in the affected states of the federation”, if the security situation in schools and colleges were not guaranteed.

In a statement on Wednesday by the Secretary General of the union, Dr. Mike Ene, the NUT also faulted the strategy being deployed by security agencies saying it fell short of expectation, considering that the Kagara abduction has just occurred while Nigeria was yet to fully contend with the December 2020 abduction of students in Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State.

The statement reads: “It has become imperative for all tiers of government to put all hands on deck. We therefore call on state governments to use part of their security voters to employ alternate security service to complement existing security agencies in policing our schools.

We must warn that if the security situation in our schools and colleges is not guaranteed, the NUT will not hesitate to withdraw the services of all teachers in the affected states of the federation.

“The union is worried and greatly concerned over the increasing state of insecurity across the country, where attacks on soft target such as schools are fast becoming danger spot for bandit and other criminal elements in Nigeria.

The NUT is alarmed by this brazen attack which has left a number of families and relatives distressed. We call on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency declare a state of emergency on security situation in the country.

“The current strategy deployed by our security agencies fall short of expectation considering that the Kagara abduction has just occurred while the nation is yet to fully contend with the December, 2020 abduction of students in Government Science Secondary School Kankara Katsina state.

“Such criminal elements have no place in a civilised society such as Nigeria. The Federal Government must deploy the full weight of our nations security apparatus to ensure the safe return of our abducted students and teachers.

Furthermore steps must be taken to completely eliminate all forms of security threats to our schools. We wish to reiterate that teaching and learning can only be guaranteed in an atmosphere safety and security.”

Kwara APC youths call for sack of Lai Mohammed

The youth wing of the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the aegis of APC Youth Stakeholders, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, for not performing to expectations.

The youth stakeholders were reacting to the impasse between the minister and the state governor, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, leading to his (Mohammed’s) call for the cancellation of the ongoing registration and revalidation of the party.

Tiamiyu Mumini, the chairman of the youth forum, while addressing journalists at a news conference in Ilorin, the state capital on Wednesday, said the minister is a “self-serving politician who should not be allowed to continue his selfish politicking to the detriment of the state.”

This is a man who surrounds himself with aides who are non Kwarans. He stubbornly refused to pick Kwarans as aides, perhaps that is why he is far from the realities on ground,” he began.

“We want him removed because he cannot have his son in the Lagos House of Assembly while he ventures on mortgaging the future of Kwara State youths by causing chaos in the ruling party.

“Instead of supporting his home state government, he is using his influence as a federal minister to scuttle well-planned projects and programmes being executed.

We are making moves for the suspension of Alhaji Lai Mohammed from APC for rubbishing the membership registration exercise in which more than 100,000 people have registered in each of the 193 wards in the state and if President Muhammadu Buhari refuses to remove him, we are taking steps to expel him from APC,” Mumini concluded.
