Twitter’s mission in Nigeria is suspicious – Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has taken a swipe at tech giant, Twitter, saying its mission in Nigeria is suspicious.

Mohammed’s comments came after Twitter deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet where he issued a threat to deal with “misbehaving” elements in “the language they understand”, while making reference to Nigeria’s civil war.

While defending its action, the tech company said the President’s tweet violated its rules.

But briefing State House reporters at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday in Abuja, the Minister accused Twitter of ignoring inciting tweets by the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, and others, adding that Nigeria would not be fooled.

He said; “We have a country to rule and we will do so to the best of our ability. Twitter’s mission in Nigeria is very suspect, they have an agenda.

“The mission of Twitter in Nigeria is very suspicious. Has Twitter deleted the violent tweets that Nnamdi Kanu has been sending? Has it? The same Twitter during the ENDSARS protests that were funding ENDSARS protesters, it was the first to close the account of the former president of the US, Trump.

“And you see when people were burning police stations and killing policemen in Nigeria during ENDSARS, for Twitter, it was about the right to protest. But when a similar thing happened on the Capitol, it became insurrection.”

The minister also asked what rule of Twitter President Buhari violated to warrant his tweet to be deleted, wondering why previous tweets on #EndSARS protests were taken out.

Mohammed added; “Twitter may have its own rules, it’s not the universal rule. If Mr. President, anywhere in the world feels very bad and concern about a situation, he is free to express such views. Now, we should stop comparing apples with oranges.

“If an organisation is proscribed, it is different from any other which is not proscribed. Two, any organisation that gives directives to its members, to attack police stations, to kill policemen, to attack correctional centers, to kill warders, and you are now saying that Mr. President does not have the right to express his dismay and anger about that?

“We are the ones guilty of double standards. I don’t see anywhere in the world where an organisation, a person will stay somewhere outside Nigeria and will direct his members to attack the symbols of authority, the police, the military, especially when that organisation has been proscribed. By whatever name, you can’t justify giving orders to kill policemen or to kill anybody you do not agree with.”

House of Reps receives proposal to change Nigeria’s name to UAR

The House of Representatives’ Special Committee on Constitution Review on Wednesday, received a proposal to change Nigeria’s name to the United African Republic.⁣

A tax consultant, Adeleye Jokotoye, submitted the proposal to the committee at the South West Zonal Public Hearing in Lagos on June 2, 2021.⁣

While presenting the proposal, he said Nigeria’s current name was an imposition of its past colonial masters and should be changed.⁣

According to Jokotoye, a change of name for the country would physically and psychologically reflect a new beginning.⁣

“At this crossroads in our history, it is mandatory that we change our name to reflect a new beginning which will be ushered in with a new constitution,” he said.⁣

Explaining why he chose United African Republic, the consultant said Nigeria is made up of hundreds of ethnic groups that need to be united.⁣

As an alternative, he suggested that Nigeria could also choose United Alkebulan Republic (meaning: United Mother of Mankind Republic) as its new name.⁣

He also suggested amendments to the constitution to reflect fiscal federalism, state or regional resource and taxation control, removal of immunity clause, and review of the Exclusive Legislative List.⁣

Northern coalition ask President Buhari to grant Biafra for ”peace to reign”

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to make a way for the Republic of Biafra so that there can be peace in the country.

The CNG also condemned Buhari’s ‘civil war’ comments as unpresidential.

Recall that after being briefed by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Yakubu Mahmood, on the attacks on INEC facilities in the South East, President Buhari said they will be ‘treated in the language they understand’.

His said in part; “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

However, the president’s comments have been widely criticised, with microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, deleting a portion of the tweets posted on his verified handle @MBuhari.

Reacting to the comments and tweets, the CNG in a statement by its spokesman, Abdul-Azeez Sulaiman, said the presidential tweet merely amounts to admission of failure and loss of capacity.

The CNG described the president’s comment on criminal gangs that kill, maim and displace tens of thousands of citizens as a clear indictment on the administration and abdication of Buhari’s primary responsibility of securing the lives and properties of Nigerians.

“We find it ridiculous that most parts of the President’s tweet concentrated more attention to infrastructure than on the lives of citizens that are wasted daily with virtually no response from the authorities

The President’s revelation that most of those involved in the current agitation for secession are those who have not witnessed the 1967 civil war is a vindication of our position that the only reasonable option to ensure a more secure future is for the Igbo to be allowed to have their wish for a Biafran nation.

“The fact that the strength of the Igbo agitation rests on youth who are mainly below the ages of 50, with diseased mindset, encouraged by their political, cultural and religious leaders to take up arms against the Nigerian state and Northerners, has rendered the nation’s unity negotiable.

“It is therefore unreasonable for those older Nigerians who are mostly above 70 to insist that the unity of Nigeria is sacrosanct whereas the people executing the dangerous Southeast secession agenda are almost entirely below 50.

It is time for the Nigerian state and all stakeholders to wake to the reality that the only remaining option to avoid a civil war is for the Igbo to be allowed to have the Biafra they have used intermittently for decades to destabilize the nation and deny peace to other components of the country,” Sulaiman said in the statement.

The group urged the people of the North in any part of the country to remain calm and resolute, with the assurance that they are taking steps to ensure the actualization of Biafra so the rest of the country would know peace.

“We hereby make allowance of the next 30 days to see how Buhari would make true his threat to deal with insurgency, banditry and above all, the greater threat posed by IPOB or how he will handle the entire Igbo leadership that openly back and embolden them,” he said.

We will avenge death of every Biafran killed henceforth – Nnamdi Kanu

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has warned that there must be a retaliation for any Biafran killed by Nigerian security agencies.

Kanu made this statement in a Facebook post while sharing some images of South Easterners allegedly shot and killed by security operatives in the region.

The IPOB leader said IPOB were now ready to take Biafra by force since the government has refused to conduct a referendum which, according to him, is the easiest way to go.

His statement read; “What we ask is very simple. Give us referendum for the people to determine their fate in this Fulani controlled zoo called Nigeria.

But if referendum which is the easiest way to go about it can’t be assured, then we will take it by force.

“We can never continue in a country created by a white man meant for their own interests which turns us into slaves. Never!. Our fathers accepted that but this generation said No.

“Simply conduct referendum and allow the will of the people to reign.

“The same way we triumph is same way we’ll continue to triumph to any option they present to us going forward.”

Talking about the killing of some IPOB members in Imo and other parts of the Southeast, Kanu added, “I hope those half baked graduates yapping on media are taking note of it!.

“What these janjaweeds must understand is that it’s no longer the time we do cry to the world.

“For any Biafran you kill, there must be a pay back. We will avenge their deaths with the heads of their killers Eyeforaneye.”

Those who want to destroy my government will have shock of their lives – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday issued a stern warning to those plotting to destroy Nigeria, saying they will soon receive the shock of their lives.

Speaking after he received a briefing from Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, on series of attacks on facilities of the electoral body around the country, President Buhari said the Federal Government has given the perpetrators enough time.

The president promised to continue leading the country in accordance with constitutional provisions, adding that those misbehaving in certain parts of the country were obviously too young to know the travails and loss of lives that attended the Nigerian Civil War.

On the dangers posed to future elections by the burning of INEC facilities, President Buhari said he would give the electoral commission all it needed to operate.

Buhari said; “I receive daily security reports on the attacks on critical national infrastructure, and it is very clear that those behind them want this administration to fail. Whoever wants the destruction of the system will soon have the shock of their lives. We’ve given them enough time.

I received a briefing today from the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on the series of attacks on their facilities nationwide. These attacks are totally unacceptable, and we will not allow those behind them to achieve their evil objectives.

I have assured INEC that we will make available to them everything they need to operate efficiently, so that no one will say we don’t want to go, or that we want a third term. There will be no excuse for failure. We will meet all of INEC’s demands.

In the area of security, we have changed the Service Chiefs and the Inspector-General, and we are demanding that they rise fully to the challenges confronting us. There must be zero tolerance for all those those bent on destroying our country by promoting crime and insurrection!

Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

South-East governors hold crucial meeting over attacks in region, vow to tackle insecurity

Governors of the five states in the South-East met on Monday as part of efforts to tackle the rising spate of insecurity in the region.

This follows the incessant attacks that have claimed lives and left several injured in various states in the region, with police stations and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices being the targets in most cases.

At the virtual meeting of the south-east governors’ forum, the leaders discussed ways to tackle the security threats in the region and secure the lives of the people.

They vowed to leave no stone unturned in tracking and bringing to justice all those involved in what they described as the armed banditry currently ravaging the South East.

The governors also sympathised with the families of all those who have lost their lives during the moment of violent hostilities in the region.

They, however, appealed to the people to exercise restraint and allow the security agencies to continue with their investigations.

At the meeting, the governors condemned the killing of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ahmed Gulak, by gunmen on Sunday while on his way to the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

They resolved to stand with the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodima, and the security agencies in their efforts to unravel the masterminds of the killing.

The leaders also commiserated with the immediate family of Gulak, as well as the government and people of Adamawa State over the unfortunate incident.

They noted that the directive by President Muhammadu Buhari to the security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators would further strengthen the bonds of unity and trust between the people of the South East and their northern counterparts.

The governors thanked their colleagues in the North for their understanding in the face of the killing and give an assurance that the masterminds would be made to face justice.

In surprise move, Oshiomhole apologises to Gov Obaseki

Former Governor of Edo State and immediate past Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has apologised to incumbent Governor, Godwin Obaseki, for any problems their rivalry may have caused.

This followed the recent victory of Obaseki at the Supreme Court which cleared him of alleged certificate forgery.

In a surprise letter addressed to Obaseki on Monday, Oshiomole regretted the crisis that the court case filed by the APC candidate in the 2020 governorship election, Pastor Ize Iyamu, had caused in the state, calling it an unfortunate occurrence which should not have happened.

While congratulating Obaseki, Oshiomole urged him to be magnanimous in victory as governor of all Edo people, regardless of political leanings.

Congratulations on your victory at the Supreme Court which has effectively laid to rest all matters arising from the last election,” part of the letter reads.

“As I had repeatedly reminded you during our several meetings, our relationship has through the years developed beyond being friends to being brothers of different parents.

“Whatever happened was unfortunate and I believe God has a reason for everything.

I have put all behind me and moved on. As I have consistently advised, please be magnanimous in victory.

“You are the governor of all Edo people regardless of political leanings.

“Once again, congratulations, Excellency! Please, accept the renewed assurances of my very best wishes and high regards.”

In the build up to the last election in the state, Oshiomhole and his then political godson, Obaseki had fallen out, a situation that pushed Obaseki to leave the APC, and pitched his tent with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) under which he won his re-election bid.

Wike, ex-Commissioner in war of words on live TV programme

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and his former Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, John Bazia, threw caution to the winds when they engaged each other in a war of words while on a live television programme on Monday night.

Bazia, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after he was dropped from Wike’s cabinet, and the Governor were on a Channels Television programme, Politics Today, when the anchor asked the former Commissioner to describe his former boss. He said:

“The governor, Wike, I must tell you that all those who are with him, they know what they are going through.

“But you have been seeing him on TV and the way he has been behaving in Nigeria. Sometimes, you will be baffled if that is an enlightened and educated mind; the way he carries himself.

“He forgets that he holds the exalted position, the office of the governor. He behaves like a thug…”

When the anchor turned to Wike to get his reaction, the visibly upset governor who felt insulted by the words of Bazia, quickly interjected and replied:

“You sit down there and somebody who said I appointed him had the temerity, the audacity, to say I behave like a thug, and you are asking me that question to react to what somebody I appointed as commissioner.

“However, let me tell you: look at him talking now. When he was commissioner, did he look that haggard?

“A thug appointed you commissioner; you never knew that he was a thug but he appointed you a commissioner.

So, only when he removed you that you then know that he behaves like a thug.

“You did not resign, you were working with a thug all the while until when the thug did not bring you back as a commissioner for a second term in 2019, you then realised that he behaves like a thug.

“Now, look at the kind of characters we have and these are the kinds of people that you want me to respond to: somebody who stole the ‘kola’ of traditional rulers and up till now, he has not gone to court to challenge our allegation that he stole ‘kola’ given to traditional rulers and clergymen.

“Why did he not resign when he was commissioner? When I won my second tenure, he was lobbying that I was going to bring him back, but when I appointed another commissioner, he knew that he would not come back.”

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, has warned Corp members posted to Sokoto for their National Youth Service Programme that the state is not safe.

The spiritual leader who spoke while hosting some NYSC Batch A stream 2 Corp members posted to Sokoto in his palace on Monday, also described Nigerians calling for the scrapping of the scheme as enemies of the nation.

I urge you to be security conscious while staying in Sokoto. You know there are security challenges now all over the world. We have our own share also.

”You should not keep late nights, and if you have any challenges contact your district head because they are like your father and guardian.

I heard there are efforts for the scrapping of the NYSC scheme. I assure you that those behind that struggle do not mean well for this country,” he said.

According to him, the NYSC scheme is the most needed programme given the present situation with Nigeria almost divided along ethnic and religious lines.

Abubakar urged the corp members to consider the state their second home and explore the opportunities therein.

The paramount ruler, who advised them to respect the customs and traditions of their host communities, urged them to be security-conscious as there are security challenges in parts of the state.

Ultimatum To Buhari: Militants Back Tompolo, Threaten Total Blackout In Lagos, Abuja, Others | Sahara ReportersThe militant groups also declared their readiness to form an alliance with the umbrella body of Ijaw Youths Council (IYC).

Some militant groups in the nine states of the Niger Delta led by the Supreme Egbesu Freedom Fighters have backed ex-militant, Government Ekpomupolo, also known as Tompolo over the seven-day ultimatum given to President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately constitute a substantive board for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The militant groups also declared their readiness to form an alliance with the umbrella body of Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), while threatening to shut down major oil exploration flow stations and oil wells in the area.

The Supreme Egbesu Freedom Fighters, in a statement issued on Sunday via electronic mail at the end of an emergency meeting conveyed by the Commanding officer, Major General Agadagba 1 Obus, also known as Thunder, said, “We will have no choice but to join hands with all other forces with the Ijaw Youth Council and other agitating militant groups in the creeks to shut down oil exploration activities on all flow stations in the region.

“We have identified targets to include the Escravos-Warri to Kaduna NNPC major delivery crude line, the Escravos Lagos atlas cove delivery line and the Trans Escravos Warri Kaduna gas line that supply electricity to Abuja will not be spared and there will be no gas supply for electricity in Abuja, Lagos Kaduna and the Northern part of the country also the Trans Forcados 48- inches terminal underwater shell/NNPC crude delivery pipeline with most of the Chevron RMP24 Clough creek line will all be brought to stand still in the wake of this 7 days ultrasound.

“On this note, the Supreme Egbesu Freedom Fighters group and the other agitating militant groups in the creek urged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC (All Progressives Congress) federal government, as a matter of security concern and for the interest of peace and economic stability immediately call the minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr Godswill Akpabio and his cohorts to lay off their hands and let the presidency quickly call for the inauguration of the NDDC board without any further delay for the interest of peace in the Niger Delta region and for the overall interest of the country.

“And if Akpabio and gang of corrupt-minded fellows of cronies refuse to yield to this noble piece of advice and still go against the common interest of the Niger Delta people and decide to continue to hold the entire Niger Delta region to ransom and refuse to let go of the grid of refusal and opposed to the inauguration of the NDDC board which means whatever that will be the fall out of this in the creek on before the expiration of this fresh one week ultimatum in alliance with the Tompolo one week declaration, this will lead to shutting down of this major crude flow stations and NNPC major crude oil delivery pipelines in the specific targeted locations in the creek then SEFFM should to be blamed rather all the blames and the economic woes should be channelled to Mr Akpabio and his fellow corrupt minded cronies at the presidency.

“The presidency and the federal government should hold Akpabio, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and his cousin, the sole Administrator of the NDDC, Mr Effiong Akwa responsible and therefore whatever that befalls in the creek of the region, the supreme Egbesu Freedom Fighters and the other agitating militant groups should not be held responsible.”

More Facts have emerged as to how human rights activist and Convener of RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore was shot by a female police officer, CSP Altine Daniel.
Sowore was shot at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.

Meanwhile, a group of protesters led by Jaye Gaskia were already inside the arena.

It was learnt that the police locked the main gate upon sighting Sowore and his group, denying them access.

Sowore, who was holding an iron net put around the fountain screamed in pain and went down. Blood gushed out of the wound.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, his lawyer, Abubakar Marshal who was also at the protest described the shooting of unarmed protesters as callous, wicked and unwarranted.

Marshal said, “Comrade gathered at Unity Fountain this morning in furtherance of the protest slated for today. When we got to the Unity Fountain, we discovered that the gate had been locked and we inquired from the policemen on the ground. We were informed that there was an order from the Commissioner of Police, FCT to lock the gate.

“We put a call to the Commissioner of Police and he denied that he gave such an order and he promised to order his men to open the gate in the next two minutes so that we could have access to the fountain, a public utility.

“As soon as we dropped the call, a detachment from the FCT police command, led by one CPS Altine Hyelhira Daniel, came down from the vehicle and opened fire on the protesters standing outside the fountain.

“There was no communication, altercation or disagreement. No form of provocation of any sort, she just alighted from the vehicle and opened fire, along with her men.”

Gulak’s murder an attempt to instigate northerners against Igbos – Akeredolu

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, says the murder of Ahmed Gulak, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is an attempt to create discord between northerners and south-easterners.

Gulak, a former aide of ex-president Goodluck Jonathan was shot dead on Sunday while on his way to the airport in Owerri, Imo state.

The Ondo state governor described his killing as “one murder too many”.

Akeredolu, in a statement, described the perpetrators as enemies of the country whose objective is to mislead, confuse and destroy.

He called on the south-east governors to brace up and confront the current security challenges in the region.

The statement reads: “The news of the death of an APC chieftain and former Special Adviser on Political Matters in the last Administration, Ahmed Gulak, in Owerri, Imo State, this morning, is very shocking and disturbing. The details of the tragic incident remain sketchy. A press statement credited to the Imo State Police Command claimed that some bandits were responsible for the gruesome murder of a man who was a visitor to the State. This is unacceptable.

“This is one murder too many. It is senseless and wicked. The perpetrators of this heinous act are enemies of this country. This contrivance is meant to mislead, confuse and destroy. It bears the unmistakable, despicable imprints of fifth columnists bent on setting the country on the path of conflagration. These criminals must not be allowed to succeed.

We want to use this medium to express our solidarity with our brother Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma. We admonish him and other Governors in the South Eastern States to brace up, and confront the current security challenge to put an end to the bloodbath in the land. The enemies of the people always employ the weapon of fear to create disaffection in the polity.

This cowardly act is calculated to instigate Nigerians against each other, particularly Northerners, against the Igbo living outside the South East. We must confront the enemies of the people with a view to neutralizing them. This is definitely not the time for political correctness. Banditry should not be allowed to subvert the legitimacy of the current Government at all levels.

“We call on all security agencies to collaborate with a view to unveiling the criminal elements sponsoring and undertaking terrorist acts. they must be punished, severely.”
