Governor Masari blames Nigerian youths for high rate of unemployment

Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari has said that Nigerian youths are responsible for their inability to be gainfully employed.

According to the governor young Nigerians complain that there’s no job whereas they are just unwilling to work and put their educational qualifications to good use.

Masari made the comment during an inteview on Channels TV, Thursday night and accused the youths of whining and displaying a sense of entitlement.

He said; “People tend to say there is no work. Who told you there is no work? There is work to a willing mind. Because people feel when they go to university, the society owes them a living, while it should be the reverse.

What are you doing with the education you acquire to help change yourself, your community, change your family, change the society? What are you doing about it? Are you waiting for a paid job of N50,000 or N60,000? We have to sit up.”

Masari’s claim is coming days after a World Bank report indicated that the unemployment rate in Nigeria had risen to the highest level.

National Bureau of Statistics, NBC in its 2020/2021 report, said the unemployment rate in Nigeria has shot up fivefold from 6.4 per cent in 2010, hitting 33.3 per cent as of the last quarter of 2020.

Armed robbers attack Ministry of Finance, steal workers’ salaries

There was chaos and panic on Thursday, when some gunmen attacked the Nasarawa State Ministry of Finance, Budget and Planning in Lafia and stole N100 million.

An eyewitness told Daily Trust that the robbers trailed officials of the ministry from a commercial bank in Lafia, where they had withdrawn the money to their office (ministry) before the attack.

The money was said to be meant for casual workers of the ministry. The ministry’s office is adjacent to the State’s Accountant General’s Office, where personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were stationed.

But it was in the ministry’s premises that the well-armed gunmen snatched the N100 million from the finance ministry’s officials while trying to dislodge the cash from the vehicle that was conveying it to the cash room.

In the process of snatching the said amount of money, the gunmen shot sporadically in the air that the ministry’s officials carrying the money and other staff members of the ministry within the premises laid down low, paving the way for the gunmen to snatch the N100 million effortlessly,” the eyewitness said.

The Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Planning, Mr Haruna Ogbole, confirmed the robbery incident to Daily Trust. He said investigation was ongoing.

Nigerian govt releases Israeli filmmakers detained over alleged links with IPOB

Three Israeli filmmakers who were nabbed by Nigerian authorities over alleged links to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have arrived in their home country on Thursday.

This was confirmed by the Israel Foreign minister, Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) who said: “I am very happy that Rudy, Andrew, and David have been released from a Nigeria prison and returned this morning to Israel.”

I thank the staff of the Foreign Ministry, the Consular Branch, and especially the Nigerian authorities and the Chargé d’Affaires in Nigeria, Yotam Kreiman, for their unending efforts to bring about the release. The emissaries of the State of Israel, around the world, have once again proven that they stand on guard and help every Israeli in distress.”

Ripples Nigeria gathered that Rudy Rochman, Andrew (Noam) Leibman, and Edouard David Benaym, who were arrested as they attempted to film a documentary, were released Wednesday thanks to aid from the Israeli Embassy in Abuja. They arrived in Israel Thursday morning.

The trio was arrested three weeks ago in Anambra, on suspicion of cooperating with IPOB.

The three thanked the Israeli Foreign Ministry and praised the cooperation between the embassies of Israel, the US, and France in Nigeria, who worked together with the Nigerian authorities and kept in touch with them during their time in prison.

Abba Kyari opens up on alleged bribe to arrest Hushpuppi’s ally.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari has denied receiving a bribe from a Nigerian Instagram celebrity, Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi.

The United States Department of Justice had said ongoing investigations showed that Hushpuppi allegedly bribed Kyari to arrest one Kelly Chibuzo Vincent, one of his accomplices in Nigeria.
Reacting to the allegations on Thursday morning, the DCP in a statement on his verified Facebook page said his hands are clean.

According to Kyari, nobody demanded money from the embattled Instagram influencer, stating that the focus of the police was to save people’s lives that were purportedly threatened.
Kyari explained that Hushpuppi had informed the police that somebody in Nigeria was threatening to kill his family. He added that the social media celebrity, who was based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before his incarceration, also sent the suspect’s phone number, urging the police to act fast to save his family.
He however said the suspect was allowed to go after investigation showed they were long time friends with disagreements over money. Kyari insisted that he did not demand a dime from Hushuppi, saying the only time they had discussions about money was when the fraudster demanded to know who sews his native clothes and caps, adding that after linking both party, Hushpuppi sent N300,000 for five sets of attires.
Kyari said the clothes and caps were delivered to his office after which someone collected them for Hushpuppi. He urged anyone interested in further pursuing the matter to contact Vincent for confirmation.
He urged his supporters to remain calm, stating that those working towards damaging his reputation would be disgraced.
The statement reads in part, “For those who are celebrating that this is an indictment on us and mentioning some fictitious big money, They will be disappointed once again as our hands are clean and our record of service for two decades is open for everybody to see. They will continue seeing us serving our fatherland and we will continue responding to ALL distress calls from ALL Nigerians provided they are life threatening.

“For good Nigerians who appreciate our service, please don’t worry as our hands are clean and they should please not respond to those celebrating and creating many false narratives without any evidence. We are used to such types of people and false newsmakers and distributors”.

US may review sale of arms, ammunition to Nigeria over concerns of human rights abuse

Due to concerns amongst policy makers over the Federal Government’s human rights record, American lawmakers are reconsidering the sale of weaponry to Nigeria.

Top Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday, delayed clearing a proposed sale of 12 AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters and accompanying defense systems to the Nigerian military.

Ripples Nigeria gathered that the deal is worth around $875 million.

This development reinforced growing misgivings in Washington regarding US relationship with Nigeria over claims of high-handedness by the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Criticisms have trailed various decisions by the Nigerian govt — with the ban on Twitter, systemic corruption issues, and the Nigerian military’s role in deadly crackdowns on protesters after widespread demonstrations against police brutality in 2020.

Sen. Bob Menendez, chairperson of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called for a “fundamental rethink of the framework of our overall engagement” with Nigeria during a Senate hearing with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in June.

Both Menendez and Sen. Jim Risch, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, have reportedly placed a hold on the proposed arms sale.

Nigeria has relied on U.S. arms sales in the past to help address multiple security challenges: the 12-year insurgency by Boko Haram militants in the country’s northeast, a spate of high-profile kidnapping-for-ransom campaigns targeting schoolchildren in the country’s northwest, and deadly clashes between the country’s semi-nomadic herders and farmers fueled by climate change and environmental degradation of the country’s arable land, have made insecurity issues worse.

The State Department describes the U.S.-Nigeria relationship as “among the most important in sub-Saharan Africa” and has provided limited funding for various military training and education programs.

Nonetheless, policy experts have opined that the USA will institute a comprehensive review of its defence sales regarding whether the Nigerian military is doing enough to minimize civilian casualties in its campaign against Boko Haram and other violent insurrectionists.

“There is a culture of impunity that exists around abuses by the military,” said Anietie Ewang, the Nigeria researcher at Human Rights Watch.

Ewang cited the Nigerian military’s killing of unarmed protesters during the country’s massive #EndSARS demonstrations against police corruption and brutality last year as well as cases documented by human rights organizations of abuses in the military’s campaign against Boko Haram.

I’m sure it’s a difficult situation. There are so many conflicts springing up across the country now,” Ewang said. “The authorities, I presume, are trying to do the best they can to save lives and properties. But this must be done in accordance with human rights standards. You can’t throw one out just to be able to achieve the other.”

IPOB issues ultimatum to shut down South-East if Kanu is not released

Due to the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued an ultimatum to the Federal Government to release him on or before Saturday, August 8.

Failure to adhere to this ultimatum may result in the total shutdown of economic activities in the South-East, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the IPOB.

This statement was issued and signed by the IPOB’s Head, Directorate of State, Chika Edoziem who said the land of Biafra would not accommodate anyone of them, in the event of any harm to Kanu.

The group also urged governors and leaders of the region, who allegedly had a hand in the arrest and abduction of Kanu from Kenya, to pray that nothing untoward happens to him in detention.

The statement read partly: “The Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafra is very much aware of the strategy of the government of Nigeria to subject the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra worldwide, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to media trial and to convict him in the public before giving him that public conviction, an official stamp of the compromised Nigerian judicial system.

“The global community knows that self-determination is not a crime; the Nigerian government knows equally that self-determination does not in any way constitute any known offence stipulated in their constitution and therefore do not have any case against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

In recognition of the above facts and truths, the Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafra demands herewith an unconditional and immediate release of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on or before August 8, 2021, failing which we shall commence a weekly lockdown of Biafraland, starting on Monday, August 9, 2021.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this total lockdown of Biafraland will take place every week until our leader is released unconditionally. This weekly lockdown is simply one of the measures we shall put in place to ensure that our leader is released hale and hearty.”

Ripples Nigeria had reported that Kanu was arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria. He has since been placed in the custody of the Department of States Services (DSS) in Abuja on charges bordering on treason and felony.

It’s a shame! Buhari without certificate attending global education summit —Melaye (video)

Former Senator that represented Kogi West Senatorial district at the 8th National Assembly, Dino Melaye, has taken President Muhammadu Buhari to the cleaners for attending a global educational summit in London when he (President), does not possess an adequate certification that should qualify him to attend the event.

Melaye who posted a video on his Facebook page on Wednesday, questioned the capacity of Buhari to represent Nigerians in a global education summit in the United Kingdom.

The former lawmaker further slammed the president for representing the country at a summit meant to address educational deficiencies, adding that he has nothing to offer academically.

According to Melaye, the President would have rejected the invitation and send the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, to represent the country in the global summit.

“It is very funny that President Muhammadu Buhari has gone to London to attend the Global Education Summit,” Melaye said.

“It is funny and it is putting Nigeria in a very bad shape because I’m wondering what will President Buhari be discussing in a global education summit.

This is the man that has just secondary school certificate, a school certificate failure and unfortunately, that certificate is even missing. We have not seen it, no copy of it.

“And you are going to a global education summit where you have professors emeritus. Where you have intellectual mobile characters. And Buhari is going to sit down and discuss what?

“I was even thinking that he would send someone like the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo to go and interact. Except the president is going to be deaf and dumb in the summit.

“Except he is going there to be an observer, I’m imagining what President Buhari is going there to discuss.

It is a shame that Nigeria is not represented in this global summit because we have a president who has nothing to offer, who is intellectually stagnant, who has no capacity academically.

“Present Buhari should have told us that he is going for medical not Global education summit,” he said.

The decision taken during the party’s critical stakeholders’ meeting held on Tuesday in Maiduguri.

The state Deputy Governor, Umar Kadafur, moved a motion for the adoption of consensus for the ward congresses and this was seconded by one Abdu Musa.

The motion, thereafter, was put to voice-vote where all the stakeholders including members of National and State Assemblies as well as local council chairmen unanimously adopted the motion.

In his address, Governor Babagana Zulum urged members of the party to observe and adhere strictly to the APC rules and regulations to guide the conduct of the congresses.

He urged members to shun acts capable of threatening the unity of the party in the state.

In his remarks, a former governor of the state, Maina Ma’aji, who was also at the meeting, described consensus as the best method that would further unite and make the party strong in the state.

He said the stakeholders were satisfied and convinced that there was no desire by the governor or the APC national leadership to impose their interest or candidate on the party in the state.

FG extends SIM-NIN linkage till October 31.

The national identification number (NIN) and subscriber identity module (SIM) integration exercise has been extended by the federal government till October 31.

Ikechukwu Adinde, Director of Public Affairs at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) who disclosed that there are now a total of 59.8 million unique NIN enrolments with an average of three to four SIMs per NIN, said the exercise was extended to “accommodate registration in hard-to-reach remote areas, foreigners and diplomatic missions, and Nigerians in the diaspora”.

He said;
“The Federal Government has approved the extension of the deadline for National Identity Number (NIN)-Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) data verification to October 31, 2021.

“The decision to extend the deadline was made following a request by stakeholders to accommodate registration in hard-to-reach remote areas, foreigners and diplomatic missions, diaspora and address low enrolments in schools and hospitals, as evidenced by enrolment statistics.

“The decision also followed a review of the progress of the exercise which indicated significant progress, hence the need to consolidate the gains of the enrolment and NIN-SIM verification process across the country.

“As at July 24, 2021, there are over 5,500 enrolment systems within and outside the country and this would significantly ease the NIN enrolment process and subsequent linkage of NIN to SIM.

“The administration of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the extension as part of efforts to make it easier for its citizens within and outside the country, and legal residents to obtain the NIN and it is important to take advantage of the extension.

“The NIN-SIM linkage also makes it easier for the security agencies to carry out their statutory duties and the relevant parastatals under the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy are supporting them as required.

“There are now a total of 59.8 million unique NIN enrolments, with average of 3 to 4 SIMs per NIN. With the great number of enrolment centres within and outside the country, and many more coming up, every citizen, legal resident, and Nigerian citizens living in diaspora should be able to obtain their NINs.”

Buhari has no third term ambition, succession plan -APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC), has reaffirmed that President Muhammadu Buhari, has no third term ambition or a succession plan as being alleged by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Sen. John Akpanudoedehe, National Secretary, APC Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), said this in a statement issued in Abuja, on Thursday.

Akpanudoedehe, had earlier said that the party would come up with a consensus and agreeable presidential candidate to fly its flag for the 2023 Presidential Election, while reacting to allegation by the PDP that Buhari had a succession plan.

He said it was unfortunate that the APC’s earlier statement, countering the PDP false allegation, was being twisted and given unintended interpretations in some sections of the media.

“Our statement is simple and straight forward. President Buhari has no third term ambition, a position he has personally reiterated.

“In adherence to internal democracy, when the time comes to elect the APC 2023 presidential flag bearer and other party candidates, the process will be in full compliance with the provisions of the 1999 amended Nigerian Constitution, the APC Constitution and the approved party guidelines.

“For clarity, the APC Constitution provides that party candidates in all elections emerge through democratically conducted primary elections or where possible, consensus,” he said.

He added that the misleading interpretations given to the party’s earlier statement was a conspiracy targeting senior APC leaders and their perceived 2023 presidential ambitions.

Akpanudoedehe said this was unnecessary and misplaced, stressing that the APC leadership would not impose any candidate in the lead up to congresses, National Convention and the 2023 General Elections.

Nigerian Top Monarch, Ooni Sets Up Committee Over Ighoho’s Arrest, Rallies South-West Leaders On Truce.

SaharaReporters had reported how the activist was arrested on Monday night in Cadjèhoun Airport, Cotonou with Beninese passport while trying to flee to Germany.

Amidst rising tension resulting from the arrest of a Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi has announced the setting up a 28-member committee made up of prominent South-West leaders.

According to the committee coordinator, Akin Osuntokun, the committee will look into the issues surrounding the arrest of Igboho and other related matters.

SaharaReporters had reported how the activist was arrested on Monday night in Cadjèhoun Airport, Cotonou with Beninese passport while trying to flee to Germany.

On July 1, the Department of State Services (DSS) raided the residence of Igboho in Ibadan, Oyo state.
He alongside others had planned to hold a ”Yoruba Nation Rally” in Lagos two days after the raid.

The DSS raided the residence, killing two people and arresting 12 aides but Igboho escaped.
The agency alleged that the activist was stockpiling weapons, and subsequently declared him wanted.

“The Ooni of Ife inaugurated an advisory council comprising eminent Yoruba sons and daughters across the political spectrum. It is called the Ooni Caucus.

“The inauguration ceremony had been scheduled over a month ago and it is just an accident that it coincided with reports of Sunday Igboho’s arrest in Cotonou. “Nonetheless the council is actively interested in the new development and would appropriately respond in the nearest future,” TheCable quoted Osuntokun as saying.

He further listed the committee members to include Deputy Chairman Oyo State Traditional Council and Olugbon of Igbon, Oba Olusola Alao; Senator Biodun Olujimi, Mrs Toyin Saraki, Mr Segun Awolowo, Prince Doyin Okupe, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Prince Oye Oyewumi, Mr Muyiwa Ige and General Olu Okunnowo.
