Bello details why Tinubu should not run for 2023 Presidency

The upcoming elections in 2023 have thrown up various permutations regarding the potential candidates vying for the Presidency, with the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, amongst the names being touted.

This elicited a response from Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State who detailed why Tinubu should not succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

According to Bello in an interview with Daily Trust on Sunday, the leader of the APC would be convinced to support a young aspirant to succeed Buhari.

Senator Tinubu is one of our leaders and I respect him so much. He has played a very significant role in Nigeria’s democracy and has built a lot of people. He has paid his dues, and with all respect as a son to him, my simple advice is that it is time for him to allow his children to take over the mantle of leadership.

” And let us do it to the glory of God and his admiration. He should see that those children he raised are now doing well. Let him see how we would manage this country in his lifetime.

He has a right to contest, nobody is questioning that. I always urge everybody to respect him for the roles he has played in this country’s democracy. He is a man of integrity, to be candid,” the governor said.

Bello also spoke about the possibility of Tinubu breaking ranks with the APC if he fails to secure the party’s ticket.

“You don’t build a house and destroy it. I don’t think Tinubu would do that. I think he has grown past that. He is an elder statesman who will not say that the country should be destroyed in his lifetime, not even after his demise.

“So I don’t see him doing that. I don’t see that happening at all. I can speak for him, that at an appropriate time he will throw his weight behind a Nigerian youth to take over the leadership of this country while he would be behind the scene giving support as an elder statesman and one of the leaders of this party.”

IPOB alleges plot by security agencies to attack citizens in SE on Monday

The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), on Sunday, alleged that it has uncovered a scheme by security agencies, especially the Department of States (DSS) and the police to disguise as IPOB and ESN operatives to attack traders who come out tomorrow (Monday) for their legitimate business.

According to the group, “Security agencies have perfected plans to unleash attacks on innocent people in the name of ESN and IPOB volunteers. We have no plans again to enforce any sit-at-home order.

“The Nigeria security agents are to be held accountable for any attack tomorrow on innocent Biafrans. Our people should resist any attempt by anybody to attack them tomorrow.”

This was contained in a statement issued by the IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful.

He added, “We, therefore want to put the world especially residents of Biafra land that IPOB has since two weeks ago suspended its initially declared Monday sit-at-home order. It, therefore, makes no sense that we will at the same time be enforcing the suspended order”.

He restates that there is no longer Ghost Mondays in the South-east in solidarity with the detained leader of the group, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, stating that, “Sit-at-home will only be observed on the days our leader will be making appearances in court. Such days will be well publicised ahead of time.

Everybody is hereby placed on alert about this wicked plot. IPOB will not tolerate any attack on any Biafran or resident of Biafra under any guise. People should be allowed to go about their businesses without any molestation or harassment.”

EFCC releases ex-gov of Abia, Theodore Orji

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released the former Abia State Governor, Senator Theodore Orji, whom it arrested on Thursday morning, at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja.

The ex-governor who has been on the EFCC wanted list for alleged misappropriation of public funds and money laundering was reportedly on his way to London when he was picked up by EFCC operatives.

According to the EFCC, Orji was being grilled over corrupt financial dealings while serving as Governor between 2007 and 2015.

The anti-graft agency noted that sometime last year, Senator Orji had approached the agency and requested for the release of his travel documents to enable him go to Dubai for medical treatment, but the serving Senator failed to return the travel document.

Also, the EFCC said it had directed Orji to report at the EFCC headquarters again on Friday (today) for the continuation of his interrogation.

Meanwhile, the lawmaker, currently representing Abia Central Senatorial District at the Senate, has denied being detained.

According to him, the EFCC officials only accosted him as he was on his way to London for a routine medical checkup.

The report of Orji’s arrest was confirmed to journalists in Abuja, on Thursday, by EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren.

EFCC seals property said to belong to ex-gov of Kano, Kwankwaso

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Kano has sealed a property allegedly belonging to the former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

According to reports on Friday, a Barrister, Mustapha Danjuma had alleged in a petition that Kwankwaso received contributions totalling about N3.08 billion.

The petition was said to have revealed that the governor allegedly received the sum of N70 million from each of the 44 local government councils in the state.

Following the petition, the anti-graft agency had commenced an investigation on Kwankwaso.

Meanwhile, the property that was allegedly sealed by the EFCC was not mentioned, while the commission is yet to confirm the development at the time of filing this report.

Kwankwaso had after serving as the governor of the state, also served as the Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District between 2011 and 2015, and was alleged to have channelled the monies into his presidential primary in 2015.

Buhari is Nigeria’s messiah, he did what Obasanjo, Yar’adua, Jonathan, could not do —Adesina

Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, has mocked former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, late Umaru Yar’adua and Goodluck Jonathan, saying Buhari has proven that he is ‘Nigeria’s Messiah’ who has been able to achieve what the past leaders could not achieve.

Adesina who made the comment on his popular Facebook column, ‘From the Inside’ on Friday, praised Buhari for signing the Petroleum Industry Bill into law, saying he did what his predecessors did not have the courage to do.

In the piece titled ‘PMB: Call him the master finisher,’ Adesina mocked the former Presidents, saying they were too timid to do the needful but that Buhari being a man with a large heart and a love for Nigerians, decided to take the bull by the horns and sign the PIB into law.

President Muhammadu Buhari has done what Napoleon couldn’t do. Again and again. The Bill had defied Olusegun Obasanjo who introduced it, got the better of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua (God rest his soul), worsted Goodluck Jonathan, but has finally been subdued by Buhari,” Adesina wrote.

Continuing, he said:

“The man (Buhari) has proven to be adept at concluding things that had long trounced and vanquished many leaders before him.

“The PIB overwhelmed the first to eighth National Assembly, which couldn’t pass it into law. But through synergy and cooperation between the Executive and the Ninth Assembly, Nigeria now has a law for her cash cow, the oil and gas industry, more than 50 years after the last legislation, which had become obsolete.

Step forward President Buhari, and be garlanded for being the Master Finisher.”

Court dismisses move to stop Kyari’s extradition to US

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday dismissed an application seeking to restrain the Federal Government from extraditing the suspended Head of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, to the United States.

A group simply known as the Incorporated Trustees of Northern Peace Foundation filed the application through its team of lawyers led by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo on August 9.

It urged the court to grant the temporary order of injunction against the Nigeria Police Force and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; pending the hearing and final determination of the substantive suit.

However, after carefully listening to the lawyer, Justice Ahmed Mohammed refused to grant the request to stop Kyari’s arrest and extradition to the US.

He told the lawyer to turn the ex-parte motion to motion on notice and serve same on the police and AGF.

The judge directed the applicant to serve all court processes in respect of the case on the two respondents and adjourned hearing in the matter till September 9.

Kyari was suspended by the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali, in July over his indictment by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in a $1.1 million fraud involving suspected fraudster, Abbas Ramon aka Hushpuppi and four others.

The US District Court for the Central District of California had also issued a warrant of arrest for Kyari and ordered the FBI to initiate a move for his extradition to the US.

INEC lists Soludo as APGA candidate in Anambra, excludes PDP

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday listed the ex-Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Charles Soludo, as the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate in the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State.

In the list, the commission dropped Michael Umeoji as the APGA candidate in the election.

This came just a few hours after the Imo State High Court, Owerri, reaffirmed the election of Umeoji as APGA candidate for the poll.

Both candidates belong to different factions of the party in Anambra State.

INEC also excluded the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the election as two candidates also vying for the right to represent the party in the Anambra election.

The INEC National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, who disclosed this in a statement in Abuja, said the decision was taken at meeting where a number of issues including the nomination of candidates were discussed by the commission.

He, however, added that the list of final candidates for the election would be released on October 7.

Okoye said: “The commission met today (Thursday August 19, 202) and deliberated on a number of issues, including the nomination of candidates for the Anambra governorship election holding on November 6, 2021.

The timetable and schedule of activities approved by the commission on January 18, 2021, provides for the withdrawal/substitution of candidates in line with Section 35 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

“Accordingly, by the deadline of July 30, 2021, fixed by the commission, seven governorship and 11 deputy governorship candidates were substituted by 11 out of the 18 political parties.

“Similarly, the commission was served with the judgment of the Court of Appeal (Kano Division) which set aside the judgment of the High Court of Jigawa State on the leadership of APGA and the nomination of its candidates for the Anambra Governorship election.

“The list of substitute candidates is attached to this Press Release. It has also been published on the commission’s website.

However, the final list of candidates will be published on October 7 2021 as provided in the timetable and schedule of activities for the election.”

2023: EFCC warns banks on election financing, others

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, on Thursday, warned financial institutions to avoid fraudulent election financing, foreign exchange malpractice, and money laundering in the country.

Bawa, according to a statement issued by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, gave the warning during an interactive session held in Lagos with the Managing Directors of banks in the country.

He said: “At the EFCC, we want to place more emphasis on prevention. We want to pay less emphasis on enforcement, which is investigation and prosecution, and put our energy more on prevention and asset recovery.

In addition, some of the issues we have identified include foreign exchange malpractices and fraudulent election financing.”

The EFCC Chairman said the commission would put bankers on their toes as the 2023 elections draw closer.

He stressed that banks and other financial institutions have a key role to play in the Commission’s efforts at riding the country of financial crimes.

He urged the bankers to comply with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s guidelines on the issuance of Personal Travel Allowance (PTA) and Business Travel Allowance (BTA) to their customers.

APGA’s crisis deepens as court reaffirms Okeke as party’s chairman

The Imo State High Court, Owerri, on Thursday reaffirmed Jude Okeke as the authentic National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The ruling came after Chief Victor Oye had filed an application for a stay of execution on earlier judgment on the matter.

The Court of Appeal, Kano, had last week reaffirmed Oye as the party’s national chairman.

The duo had been battling for APGA’s leadership position for about four months.

Justice Vivian Isiguzo, who delivered the judgment on the applications, also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise all correspondence from Okeke’s faction for the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State.

While the court granted Oye leave to appeal the judgment, it refused to grant the prayer for stay of execution and reaffirmed its earlier judgment declaring Okeke as APGA authentic chairman.

INEC had earlier on Thursday listed the former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Charles Soludo as the party’s candidate for the Anambra election.

The commission dropped Michael Umeoji who was earlier listed as APGA candidate for the election.

While Soludo won the governorship primaries organized by the Oye-led national executive committee, Umeoji secured the party’s ticket in the election conducted by Okeke’s faction.

Confusion as court rejects Soludo, declares Umeoji as APGA candidate for Anambra guber poll

The courts have again created confusion and uncertainty around who the authentic candidate of a party should be in respect of a forthcoming election.

This is as an Owerri High Court on Thursday reaffirmed the election of Chukwuma Umeoji as the candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) for the November 6 governorship election in the state, sacking the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Chukwuma Soludo.

Both candidates belong to different factions of the party, led by two different factional chairmen.

A federal high court sitting in Awka, the Anambra capital, had also recently affirmed Soludo as APGA candidate ahead of the governorship election in the state.

Soludo who belongs to the Victor Oye-led faction of APGA had secured 740 votes to defeat Ezenwankwo Christopher who polled 41 votes, while ThankGod Ibe had four votes, and Okolo Chibuzor got seven votes.

But in the list published on July 16, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) picked Michael Umeorji over Soludo as the standard-bearer for APGA.

INEC said it based its decision on a court orders.

But in today’s ruling, the court refused to recognise Victor Oye as the national chairman of the party.

The Presiding Justice V. C. Isiguzo of Court 9, Owerri High Court, also refused to grant a stay of execution on the previous ruling of Justice B. C. Iheka of Owerri High court.

A suit filed by Prof Soludo and Oye has sought to prevail on INEC to remove Umeoji as the candidate of APGA.

This ruling was sequel to an application for stay of execution and leave to appeal filed by Chief Oye wherein the court granted him leave to appeal but refused to grant the order for stay of execution but rather went ahead to reaffirm its earlier judgment.

Consequently, the Court expressly stated that INEC cannot evade its duty to comply with the Orders of the Court declaring Umeoji as APGA candidate and therefore has a legal obligation to continue to carry out, obey and comply with the extant, valid, and subsisting judgment of the Court.

The judgement was delivered on 28th July 2021, which declared Umeoji candidate and ordered INEC to continue to recognize him and Jude Okeke as chairman pending the determination of the appeal filed by Victor Oye at Appeal Court Owerri.

The court said that INEC must continue to recognise Umeoji as the candidate of the party until the Appeal Court rules otherwise.

It also mandated the electoral body to accept and continue to recognize and publish the name of Umeoji who emerged as APGA’s governorship candidate in Awka as the candidate of the party and to mandatorily include his name in all electoral processes for the Anambra Governorship election.

In the run up to the 2015 general elections, a number of controversial and contradicting rulings emerged from different courts around the country on the same issues, creating a lot of confusions at that time.

PIA: Nigerian govt rules out job cut in petroleum industry

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, on Wednesday allayed fears of job cut in the nation’s petroleum sector following the signing of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

President Muhammadu Buhari signed the law on Monday.

The law provides a legal, regulatory and fiscal framework for the Nigerian petroleum industry, the development of host communities, and related matters.

There were insinuations that the new law would lead to job cut in the nation’s oil and gas industry.

Sylva, who addressed State House correspondents at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja, insisted that the law would create the enabling environment for creation of more jobs in the industry.

He said: “We have already made provisions in the law to ensure that no job is lost in the oil industry as a result of the Act.

“So, no job will be lost as a result of the Petroleum Industry Act. All jobs in the petroleum industry will be intact.

“That was already taken into account, we discussed with labour extensively in the process of drafting the bill.”

Sanusi’s statement confirms our position on Buhari’s govt – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said on Wednesday the recent comments credited to the deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, on the mismanagement of the nation’s economy by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration confirmed its position on the poor performance of the government in the last six years.

Sanusi, who spoke at a colloquium to mark his 60th birthday in Kaduna last Sunday, said the current administration had erased the country’s economic gains in just five years.

The PDP, which reacted to the ex-Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor’s position in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said Sanusi’s declaration directly reflects its position and that of the majority of Nigerians on the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The statement read: “The dire situation is now beyond politics. The PDP calls on more stakeholders to speak out irrespective of ethnicity, creed, and political party affiliations, so as to save the nation from a total collapse.

“The Buhari Presidency and the APC have, in the last six years, only succeeded in destroying every sector of our national life with their manifest incompetence, unbridled corruption, treasury looting, impunity, exclusionist and restrictive economic policies that have brought our nation to her knees.

“Nigerians can recall that the PDP handed over a robust economy, rated the largest hub in Africa and one of the fastest-growing in the world with Fitch B+ rating and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $574 billion to President Buhari and the APC in May 2015.

Sadly, in the last six years, the Buhari-led APC administration has reduced our productive sectors to complete wreckage with alarming 33.3 percent unemployment and 17.38 percent inflation rates.

“Over 60 million hitherto flourishing businesses folded up and the naira crashing from N167 to a dollar in 2015 to N512 under the APC corrupt and directionless watch.

More depressing is that the corrupt APC administration has practically erased all the gains of the debt repayment achieved by the PDP, returned our nation to a beggar state and mortgaged the sovereignty of our country with reckless borrowing and accumulated N33.107 trillion.

“Life has become so unbearable in Nigeria under President Buhari and the APC, that more than 82.9 million Nigerians are no longer able to afford their daily meals and other necessities of life, with our nation now ranking as the poverty capital of the world and 98th out of 107 in Global Hunger Index.

Today, under the APC, a litre of fuel that sold for N87 under the PDP now sells for N165, a bag of rice that sold for N8,000 now sells for N30,000, a measure of garri and beans which sold for N150 and N250 now sells for N600 and N800 respectively; a measure of maize and guinea corn which sold for about N150 now sells for N400, a kilo of meat which sold for about N800 now sells for about N2,300 while a 12.5 kg of cooking gas which sold for N3,000 now sells for over N6,000, all thanks to the incompetence and corruption of the Buhari-led APC administration.

“Furthermore, the compromises of the APC administration have led to the escalation of terrorist activities, banditry, kidnapping, killings, bloody agitations as well as other acts of violence that have turned our nation into a large funeral parlour, with no hope in sight.

Indeed, this is not the way our nation should go. The PDP, therefore, urges more Nigerians to speak out to rescue our nation from this fast descent to a failed state.”

Taliban slams Facebook, USA over questions on free speech

The Taliban has slammed what it terms the hypocrisy of branding the U.S. and Facebook as proponents of censorship of free speech after a question about the regime’s stance on freedom of expression.

This was in reaction to a question that was dismissed by the Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, on Tuesday.

“This question should be asked to those people who are claiming to be promoters of freedom of speech, who do not allow publication of all information,” Mujahid responded to a question about freedom of speech in the new government.

“I can ask the Facebook company. This question should be asked to them.”

Notably, the Taliban mentioned Facebook on censoring of free speech and not Twitter, which has permitted Taliban leaders to remain on the platform.

Facebook, however, issued a statement to the BBC that Taliban accounts will continue to be banned.

“The Taliban is sanctioned as a terrorist organization under U.S. law and we have banned them from our services under our Dangerous Organization policies,” a Facebook spokesman told the BBC on Monday night.

“This means we remove accounts maintained by or on behalf of the Taliban and prohibit praise, support, and representation of them.”

We also have a dedicated team of Afghanistan experts, who are native Dari and Pashto speakers and have knowledge of local context, helping to identify and alert us to emerging issues on the platform.”

The National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Mai Mala Buni, boasted on Tuesday the party would record a landslide victory in the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State.

Mala-Buni, who stated this during the inauguration of the party’s National Campaign Committee for the election in Abuja, urged the people of Anambra State to take advantage of the election to join the party.

The campaign committee is headed by the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma.

Other members of the committee are governors Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa), Yahaya Bello (Kogi), and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva.

He said: “I am glad to say with a sense of satisfaction that the growing fortunes of the party in Anambra State and the South-East geopolitical zone in general had increased our hope for victory. This will no doubt increase our chances of winning the election with a landslide.

May l call on the committee to concentrate on issues that will add value to the success of the party and avoid issues that may distract us from the path of victory. We should remain resolute, committed, and law-abiding throughout the assignment and beyond.

“I also wish to call on the officials, party stakeholders, and our loyal party members to support the committee in achieving its set target of delivering Anambra State to APC.

“To the people of Anambra State, this is an opportunity to belong to the national party. We should all support the committee for a successful assignment for a brighter future and for the good of the state.”

Probe panel yet to submit findings on Kyari – Police

The police on Monday night dismissed reports that the Special Investigation Panel (SIP) set up by the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali, to investigate the bribery allegation against the suspended Head of the Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, has submitted its findings on the matter.

The IGP set up the panel two weeks ago to probe Kyari over his alleged involvement in a $1.1 million fraud by suspected fraudster, Abbas Ramon aka Hushpuppi, and four others.

The four-man panel is headed by the Deputy Inspector -General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Joseph Egbunike.

There were reports that the team submitted its findings to the IGP on Monday.

However, in a statement posted on its verified Facebook page on Tuesday night and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, the police urged Nigerians to disregard the reports.

The statement read: “The Nigeria Police Force wishes to inform the general public that the probe into the alleged indictment of DCP Abba Kyari by the FBI, being conducted by the NPF Special Investigation Panel (SIP), is still ongoing.

“Members of the public are enjoined to note that the panel has not submitted its report to the Inspector-General of Police as being wrongly reported in some news outlet and online platforms.

“The Force hereby reassures the public that the outcome of investigations by the probe panel would be communicated accordingly upon conclusion of the investigations.”

Gunmen kill 37 in fresh Niger attack

Unknown gunmen on Monday killed 37 people including 14 children in a village in the Tillaberi region of Niger Republic.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Niger Republic’s Interior Ministry said the assailants who stormed the village of Darey Dey, near the country’s border with Mali on motorcycles, slaughtered the victims in their farms.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack but several armed groups linked to al-Qaeda or ISIL (ISIS) are active in the region.

Darey Dey, a village of about 40km east of the town of Banibangou, was already reeling from March 15 bloody attack by rebels that killed 66 people.
