FCT rural schools is not safe for resumption of academic activities – PTA Chairman

Alhaji Usman Abubakar, Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) has said that primary and secondary schools in rural communities in the capital territory are not safe for resumption of academic activities.

Speaking to Daily Trust on Friday September 16, Abubakar said activities of bandits and kidnappers in some rural communities especially at Abaji rural communities, which share boundaries with neighbouring villages in Niger State, are quite worrisome.

He said;

“In fact, schools within Yaba axis and some other communities that share boundaries with neighboring villages in Niger State are still shut because report coming from those axis over security threat as a result of activities of bandits and kidnappers is quite worrisome.”

Abubakar also told the publication that even before the resumption of academic activities, some of the rural schools across the axis had been facing security threat.

He added

“we expected that before resumption, government should be able to put in place security measures in these schools.”

The PTA Chairman who disclosed that they are happy with FCT administration’s directive for schools to resume, further stated that the administration ought to have put in place security measures in such rural schools.

He called on the FCT administration to liaise with community leaders in mobilizing local vigilantes to safeguard the affected rural schools to facilitate resumption of academic activities.

Man sentenced to 21 years imprisonment for raping and impregnating his 18-year-old daughter in Lagos

An Ikeja Special Offences Court has sentenced a 52-year-old man, Akin Isaac, to 21 years imprisonment for defiling and impregnating his 18-year-old daughter.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo sentenced the convict on Thursday, September 15, 2022, following his plea bargain application dated 21 April.

“In view of the guilty plea of the defendant to one count of defilement, I hereby find the defendant guilty as charged,” Mrs Taiwo said.

The judge thereafter asked the defendant if he had anything to say, following his conviction. NAN reports that the convict knelt down in the dock and pleaded for mercy, saying he had an aged mother to look after.

Mrs Taiwo thereafter sentenced him to 21 years in prison and added that the sentencing should take effect from June 2020 when he was arrested.

Earlier, the judge had asked the state counsel, Omowumi Bajulaye-Bishi, if the 21 years plea bargain was good enough for the convict, owing to how emotional the survivor was while she was giving her testimony.

“I remember the survivor clearly. She was weeping right here in the box. Abortion, pregnancy, drugs, beating and all sorts of inhuman treatment meted on her by her father? Do you think 21 years is good enough for him?” the judge asked.

Mrs Bajulaye-Bishi, in her review of facts dated 6th July, had informed the court that the convict applied and concluded to change his plea, upon which the information against him be amended to the offence of defilement.

The offence was committed between 2014 and 2020 on Akinlagbe Street, Alapere Lagos.

It contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

Director-General, National Youths Service Corps, Brig-Gen. Mohammed Kaku Fadah has said that they’ve discovered that many foreign-trained graduates are unqualified.

In his speech at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Batch C pre-mobilisation workshop on Thursday September 15, Fadah the 2022 Batch ‘B’ Streams I and II Orientation programmes, field officers uncovered a good number of corps members, mostly foreign-trained, who couldn’t defend their supposed educational qualifications.

The NYSC DG added;

“We expect that, amongst other steps, the institutions will always ensure that only credible officers are entrusted with the task of the handing data of their graduates being processed for mobilization.”

Kidnapped Kogi oil mogul, Mohammed Jamiu regains freedom after two months in captivity

The owner of Always Petroleum and Energy Service Limited, Alhaji Mohammed Jamiu, has regained freedom after spending two months in kidnappers’ den.

Jamiu was kidnapped on July 9, 2022 at his residence located at Idare quarters in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The kidnappers, numbering four, had entered his house posing as business associates shortly after he returned from Eid praying ground in Okene town.

The oil mogul was reportedly released on Thursday night, September 15, after his family paid a ransom.

“Freedom is priceless” – Ice Prince says after release from Ikoyi prison

Nigerian musician, Panshak Zamani, a.k.a Ice Prince, has said freedom is priceless after spending six days in Ikoyi prison.

The rapper stated this via his Twitter handle on Thursday night, September 15, a week after he was released on bail.

“Freedom is priceless,” he tweeted.

The ‘Oleku’ crooner is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on assault, obstructing a policeman from carrying out its statutory duties, and abduction.

He was arrested in the early hours of Friday September 2, for allegedly abducting and assaulting a police officer in Lagos.

The court granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 and asked him to provide “two responsible sureties.

The court also ordered his remand at the Ikoyi correctional facility until his bail conditions were met.

Two suspects arrested with human skull in Ibadan

Men of the Oyo Security Network codenamed Amotekun Corps have arrested two suspects allegedly found in possession of human skulls in Oyo town.

The two suspects, Ganiyu Maruf, an indigene of Laguna family in Oyo town, and Alfa Basiru Bashit of Abu Compound, Oyo; were almost lynched by residents of Ori-awo Yidi.

Upon interrogation, Maruf, a bricklayer said one Dauda ‘Baba Ato’, a carpenter had supplied them with the skulls. He claimed the man had initially refused him because he had earlier been arrested by SARS but later asked him to pay the sum of N50,000 for the skulls.

Maruf said not long after Dauda supplied them the skulls, he was arrested again by operatives of SARS, but was later released weeks later after confessing his crimes.

According to his confession, he had escaped to the village but returned about two months later when he heard Baba Ato had been released.

However, Baba Ato reportedly died the night of his release.

The suspect recounted how that they hid the skulls around the area while he kept watch over it for it not to be stolen about five days ago.

Unknown to him, residents of Ori-Awo area where he resides, had been watching him patrolling the spot where he buried the skulls.

The alerted residents reportedly attacked Maruf and his accomplice while they were on their way to Yida.

On his part, Bashit confessed contributing N15,000 to the money to get the skulls from Baba Ato, who is related to Maruf’s family.

When asked who was going to perform the money rituals for them, Maruf said he has the knowledge of rituals from his maternal grandfather and was going to try doing it for himself first.

Nigerian man poses as German woman on social media, allegedly dupes retired Indian engineer of N131m

The Special Task Force in Uttar Pradesh, India has arrested a Nigerian man who allegedly duped a 64-year-old retired Aeronautics engineer of Rs 9 lakh (N131m) by posing as a German woman on social media.

The accused identified as Jerome Balla aka Sunday Dumka, 34, was arrested from Delhi on Thursday, September 15, 2022. Police recovered six mobile phones, three SIM cards, one Nigerian voter ID card, Mastercard and photocopy of a passport from his possession.

STF said that the accused is the member of the gang involved in online fraud, particularly duping older men by luring them into friendship impersonating as women.

The accused posed as a woman on his social media profile and took the money from the victim, a resident of Alambagh, Lucknow, in the name of sending him gifts on her birthday. The man lodged a case with the Cyber police.

ASP, STF, Vishal Vikram Singh, said that the suspect created a fake profile identifying him as Analisa Thompson of Berlin and befriended the victim through Facebook.

Last year, the suspect sent a message stating that ‘she’ wanted to send some gift on her birthday and asked the victim to send his address.

“A few days later, I got a call from a man regarding a parcel and was asked to deposit Rs 20,000 as income tax. I did the payment.

A few days later I got another call, this time from a woman, and was asked to deposit Rs 52,000 as charges/tax for the gift which was 60,000 in Great Britain currency. Since the money was huge, I did not doubt and deposited this amount also,” he said.

Later, he was told to deposit Rs 3.98 lakh as the final sum which was assessed as charges for getting the gift and foreign money.

“While I was eagerly waiting for the gift, another person sent me a letter asking me to deposit Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 8.28 lakh,” he said.

He said they took money in the name of RBI charges/fees. He said these e-mails made him cautious and he went to the RBI to inquire about the same and was told that he had been cheated. ASP Singh said the arrested man was named in several cases of cyber fraud in Lucknow.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that he visited India in 2017. He then married a girl from India in 2018 and has been living in Delhi since then.

The police added that the accused created several IDs on various social media platforms and used to display pictures of foreign people to trap the victims. The accused befriended the victims by impersonating as a man or woman from America, Germany or elsewhere.

He even talked to them on phone by using voice changer software. With a promise to marry the victims, the accused vowed to send them lavish gifts. Later, he would call them up as a Customs officer and pressure victims to pay ‘customs duty’ on the items received.

According to the police, the accused also duped people by threatening to trap them in money laundering case and asked them to send money to various bank accounts.

Suspected cultist shoots student dead in Yabatech

An unidentified student of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos was shot dead, Thursday evening, around 9 pm, by suspected cultist.

Our correspondent, who was in the school at the time of the incident, noted that the student was shot twice while other students ran for safety.

A student, Tayo Aina, noted that she was behind the student that was shot.In a jittery voice, she said, “I was going for night class because my final exam is tomorrow and the next thing I heard was a gunshot and the guy behind me fell.

“I can’t say exactly but they were about two to three guys who were standing and I could see one with a gun as I ran for safety.”

Another student, who only identified herself as Mujibat stated that the level of cult shootings and killings in the school had to be stopped.

She stated, “It was a day to our matric during my National Diploma days when someone was also killed. It’s not the first time this is happening and no development has been made towards the issue at all.”

Mujibat noted that she was also on her way to the night class when she heard gunshots and students running helter-skelter for safety.

Confirming the story, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the incident was true.He stated, “The DPO of the area already visited the scene and confirmed that the incident did happen.”

He also noted that further details would be released by the police after investigations.All efforts to reach the school’s Rector proved abortive.

Nigerian man and three accomplices arrested for allegedly duping woman in India

Four people including a Nigerian national, have been arrested for allegedly duping a woman of more than Rs 6 crore in India.

The accused identified as Nigerian, Kosorachi Amadi (41), and Indians Meya Imchen (32), Hematoli Sumi (29) and Baben Rai (29) were arested on Wednesday, September 15, 2022 in Delhi.

Police said a woman filed a complaint alleging that one Eric Elliot befriended her on social media in 2016 and offered her a 50 per cent business partnership in India.

He allegedly cheated her of Rs 6.5 crore between 2016 and 2022 by claiming to send a parcel with expensive articles after seeking money for customs clearance, police said.

While investigating, police said mobile service details and bank account information revealed that the accused were operating from South Delhi, with the IMEI number traced to Safdarjung Enclave.

According to police, Hematoli was arrested as her number was linked with bank accounts used in cheating. Baben Rai and Imchen were also arrested on her instance, and Amadi was also rounded up later.

Police said Amadi, along with associates in Nigeria, would create fake profiles of UK residents and befriend Indian women on social media, cheating them by demanding money for customs clearance in exchange for expensive gifts.

He also disclosed the names of the other Nigerians involved, as well as Indian associates who arranged the bank accounts used for taking the cheated money, police said.

A case was filed under IPC sections 419 (cheating by personation) 420 (cheating/dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and provisions of the IT Act.

Bandits kill vigilante, abduct several villagers in Niger state Bandits killed a vigilante and shot another in Ebbo community in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State.

It was gathered that several villagers were also abducted in several attacks on communities in the state.

According to Daily Trust report, the bandits stormed Ebbo community around 10:45 pm on Wednesday, Septemeber 14, and went straight to the vigilante office where they killed one of the vigilantes and shot another one in the leg.

It was also learnt that the Wednesday attack came four days after the neighbouring communities of Kpada and Yaba, border communities to the Federal Capital Territory, were attacked during which at least one person also lost his life while several residents fled their homes.

Residents said attackers also raided Angwan Dajin Gomna in Kpada community and kidnapped five persons before moving to Zago village and lafiyan Zago where they abducted 10 others after operating for hours.

Residents said the area had been under constant attacks in the last few months, scaring residents and farmers away from going about their normal duties.

“We were at a viewing centre watching football when we heard sporadic shooting of guns. We all ran out and it was bandits in their numbers. We had to run for our dear lives. But as I speak with you, our vigilantes are after them in the bush,” a resident told Daily Trust.

The leader of the vigilantes in Ebbo community, Mallam Yusuf Adalami, told Daily Trust that the injured member had been rushed to Gulu General Hospital while his men were on the trail of the bandits who fled into forests.

He said the attackers arrived on motorcycles and opened fire on his members. “They came on motorcycles in their numbers and came straight to our office.

They started shooting sporadically at our office. Our major challenge is lack of weapons. We don’t have the kind of weapons they use,” Adalami said.

“Even when we were to take one of our members who sustained severe injuries, we didn’t get vehicle easily. And on our way, the car broke down again.

It took hours before we could get another car to take him to the hospital. His condition is severe; we may have to take him to another place for treatment.”

Governor Akeredolu loses mother

Evangelist Grace Akeredolu, mother of Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, is dead.

The Governor in a statement said his mother died in the early hours of Thursday September 15, in her sleep. She was 90.

“My siblings and I announce, with deepest regret and total submission to the will of the Almighty, the passing into glory of our adorable, dutiful and ever dotting mother, Lady Evangelist Grace Bosede Akeredolu JP, this morning. She died peacefully in her sleep,” the statement read.

“Though saddened by the departure of Maami, the one Abiyamo we knew, we are consoled with the knowledge that, even as she transits to eternity, she will be guided by the strong hands of the angels of the light in which she dwelt during her eventful and fruitful sojourn on the terrestrial plane. “Maami rest in perfect peace.

Burial announcement will be made by the family,” he added.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Richard Olatunde, who also confirmed the passing of the nonagenarian in a statement, said she is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other family members.

Nigerian man recounts how some police officers in Lagos allegedly planted drugs in his uber and asked him to pay N50000 to be freed

A Nigerian man, Solomon Osinloye, has accused some police officers in Lagos of planting drugs in his uber and asking him to pay N50000 to be freed.

In a Twitter thread, Solomon said his insistence that he is an asthma patient and had recently done a drug test made the officers set him free.

He alleged that the officers told him if they wanted to set him up they would.

When asked by Lagos state police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, if he would be able to recognise the police officers if he sees them, Solomon replied in the affirmative.

Ex-convict arrested in Lagos with stolen generators

The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command has arrested an ex-convict, Yekini Opeyemi.

Opeyemi, working as a guard at Ojota New Garage, was arrested for being in possession of two stolen 2.8KVA generators.

The 35-year-old suspect was apprehended near Odo-Iya Alaro at Ojota in company of others who are now at large.

He was trying to load one Firman and one Tigmax generator, both 2.8 KVA, into a Volkswagen Golf car.

The driver, on sighting police operatives sped off, leaving Opeyemi behind. Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin said Opeyemi arrived in Lagos last week and got a job at Ojota.

The security agency found out that the suspect has been imprisoned on four different occasions over separate incidents.

Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Panti, Yaba, for further investigation and prosecution.

Terrorists killed as police repel attack in Katsina

Operatives of the Katsina State Police Command have repelled an attack along Sabuwa – Mararabar Yakawada road, in Sabuwa Local Government Area of the state.

Spokesperson of the command, SP Gambo Isah, who disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, said many of the terrorists are feared to have been killed while others may have been wounded.

“Today 14/09/2022 at about 01445hrs, a distress call was received that terrorists numbering thirty (30), on motorcycles, armed with AK 47 rifles, blocked Sabuwa – Mararabar Yakawada road, Sabuwa LGA of Katsina state, with intent to commit armed robbery and kidnapping,” the statement read.

“On receipt of the report, DPO Sabuwa Division, led tactical unit to the area and engaged the hoodlums into a fierce gun duel. The team successfully repelled the terrorists from their heinous mission.

“In the course of scanning the scene, a terrorist was neutralized, one (1) AK 47 rifle and four (4) of their operational motorcycles were recovered.

“It is feared that many terrorists were neutralized and/or escaped the scene with gun shots wounds. Investigation is ongoing.”

Grieving family find snake buried under tiles in their late father’s room

A bereaved family found a snake buried under the tiles in their late father’s room. The father died after falling sick and the snake was dug out a year after his death.

The Twitter user who shared a photo of the snake said the reptile was found in the same bedroom her parents shared.

It remains a mystery how the snake got there.

She added that it is their family house and the last time it was renovated was when her dad bought the house.

Governor Ayade Locks Out Civil Servants Over Lateness

The Governor of Cross River State, Prof Ben Ayade, on Wednesday, locked out some civil servants working in the governor’s office for coming late to the office.

The action of the governor followed his return from a long trip out of the state and on resumption of work on Wednesday, workers who were not on duty at that time were barred from entering their offices.

End Of Covid Pandemic In Sight – WHO

The World Health Organisation, on Wednesday, said the number of newly reported Covid-19 cases has dropped dramatically, urging the world to seize the opportunity to end the pandemic.

The disease which has killed millions since being identified in late 2019, last week fell to the lowest level since March 2020. According to AFP, the WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the world needs to seize the opportunity.

“We have never been in a better position to end the pandemic. We are not there yet, but the end is in sight,” he said.

Urging the world to seize the opportunity, Ghebreyesus said, “If we don’t take this opportunity now, we run the risk of more variants, more deaths, more disruption and more uncertainty.”
