NAFDAC debunks claim of children vaccine having mercury in it

Claims of children in Nigeria being administered a vaccine that contains 40 percent mercury has been debunked by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye who also debunked claim of the vaccine being prescribed by a foreign organisation, noted that mercury is a metal and is not used as an element or as a component of vaccines.

Adeyeye also said that the basic components of vaccines are antigens, adjuvants to improve immune response, antibiotics to prevent contamination during manufacturing, preservatives and stabilizers.

The NAFDAC DG who stated that there is no evidence of harm caused by the low doses of thimerosal in vaccines, except for minor reactions like redness and swelling at the injection site, also acknowledged that in July 1999, the Public Health Service agencies, the American Academy of Pediatrics and vaccine manufacturers agreed that thimerosal be reduced or eliminated in vaccines as a precautionary measure.

Adeyeye revealed that Nigeria still receives some multi-dose vaccines containing thimerosal but at an accepted concentration as it has not been proscribed by the World Health Organisation.

She said;

“Thimerosal, a mercuric compound which is a preservative used in multi dose vaccines, contains a different form of mercury called ethyl mercury.

“As a vaccine preservative, thimerosal is used in concentrations of 0.003% to 0.01%, (for example, thimerosal content allowed in vaccine is between 30 parts to maximum of 100 parts out of million parts of the vaccine formula).

“Thimerosal is a mercury-based preservative that has been used for decades in the United States in multi-dose vials (vials containing more than one dose) of medicines and vaccines.”

Twitter to start charging $20 per month for verification under Elon Musk’s ownership

Twitter plans to start charging nearly $20 a month for users to stay verified. This is part of a premium service that will be rolled out under Elon Musk’s leadership, according to a report.

“The whole verification process is being revamped right now,” Musk, who took over as the CEO of the social media platform Friday, October 28, tweeted Sunday, October 30.

The company also plans to raise its optional $4.99-a-month premium subscription called Twitter Blue to $19.99 a month.

However, that price is subject to change, The Verge reported, citing internal correspondence and people familiar with the matter.

Twitter will add more features, including verification, to bring its subscription up to par with the cost hike. Elon Musk plans to make verified users pay money to keep their verified status.

Existing verified users have 90 days to subscribe to the new Twitter Blue after its launch or they’ll lose their blue checkmarks, according to The Verge.

The current Twitter Blue launched about a year ago and offers subscribers a way to view ad-free articles from some publishers as well as additional customization settings.

Musk has been outspoken about his desire to grow subscription numbers to account for half of Twitter’s revenue as well as his eagerness to overhaul the platform’s verification process.

CBN has my backing on redesigning of naira notes – President Buhari

President Buhari says he is fully in support of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s move to redesign the naira notes.

Recall that the apex bank’s decision to redesign the N1,000, N500, and N200 notes, caused a stir last week after the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said she wasn’t aware of the decision.

However, in a statement by his media aide Garba Shehu, the President said he is aware of the redesigning and that he is “convinced that the nation will gain a lot by doing so”.

President Buhari said reasons given to him by the CBN convinced him that the economy stood to benefit from the reduction in inflation, currency counterfeiting and the excess cash in circulation.

He said he did not consider the period of three months for the change to the new notes as being short.

People with illicit money buried under the soil will have a challenge with this but workers, businesses with legitimate incomes will face no difficulties at all.”the statement read

President Buhari approved Naira redesign – CBN replies finance minister

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reacted to the claim by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmad, that her ministry was not informed of the redesign N200, N500, and N1,000 denominations of the country’s currencies carried out by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Recall that on Tuesday, October 25, CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, announced that the apex bank had obtained President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval to redesign some naira notes.

However, while defending her ministry’s 2023 budget before the Senate Committee on Finance in Abuja on Friday, October 28, Ms. Zainab claimed that the CBN failed to consult her ministry on the proposed redesign of the denominations.

“We were not consulted. It was an announcement that we heard and there are also consequences. We are also looking at what the consequences will be. There will be some benefits but there are some challenges.

I don’t know if the monetary authorities have looked very closely at what the consequences are and how they can be mitigated.I still advise that you have that discussion with the monetary authority,” she had told the senate committee.

Reacting to the Ahmad’s statement, the spokesperson of the CBN, Osita Nwanisobi emphasised that the apex bank followed due process in its policy actions.

He said the management of the CBN, in line with provisions of section 2(b), section 18(a), and section 19(a)(b) of the CBN Act 2007, had duly sought and obtained the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari in writing, to redesign, produce, release and circulate new series of N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes.

“The management of the CBN, in line with provisions of section 2(b), section 18(a), and section 19(a)(b) of the CBN Act 2007, had duly sought and obtained the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari in writing to redesign, produce, release and circulate new series of N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes” he said According to Nwanisobi, “currency management in the country had faced several escalating challenges, which has threatened the integrity of the currency, the CBN and the country.

Every top-rate Central Bank was committed to safeguarding the integrity of the local legal tender, the efficiency of its supply as well as its efficacy in the conduct of monetary policy.”

On the timing of the redesign project, Nwanisobi explained that the CBN had waited long enough for 20 years to carry out a redesign

”The standard practice globally was for central banks to redesign, produce and circulate new local legal tender every five to eight years.”he said

While assuring Nigerians that the currency redesign exercise was purely a central banking exercise and not targeted at any group, the CBN spokesman expressed optimism that the effort will, among other goals, deepen Nigeria’s push to entrench a cashless economy in the face of increased minting of the eNaira.

This, he said, is in addition to helping to curb the incidents of terrorism and kidnapping due to access of persons to the large volume of money outside the banking system used as a source of funds for ransom payments.

FCT not saturated with bombs as speculated – Police spokesperson, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi

The Nigeria Police Force has refuted rumors claiming that bombs are being planted in every area of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.

In a statement issued by the Force spokesperson, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi dismissed this and said there is no imminent threat to the FCT at the moment.

His statement reads;

“It is surprising and disheartening to read in the news and on social media that bombs are being planted in every area of the Federal Capital Territory, even from some individuals who are presumed to be peace ambassadors and patriotic agents of national unity in Nigeria.

I dont think it will do our country any good to continually spread such fearful rumours to further create more panic to citizens and residents of the FCT and Nigeria at large.

We still reiterate that the Federal Capital Territory is safe and there is no imminent threat, neither is the FCT being saturated with bombs as speculated in the news.

We therefore urge residents of the FCT and Nigerians at large to disregard this fake news which was purportedly sponsored to create fear in our people and heat up the polity.

We will continue to adopt all effective operational strategies to decimate the activities of non-state actors and other criminal elements in the country”
