“It may not come in your early life, but if you work hard with integrity and are steadfast, you will succeed; you will make money than you ever believed in your life. AAUA graduate stabbed to death over N1,000 debt

A recent graduate of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba, Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, has been fatally stabbed by an indigene over a 1,000 naira payment misunderstanding.

The deceased, simply identified as Temitayo, was stabbed with scissors in the early hours of Thursday, April 6, around Ebenco filling, opposite Akua junction, Akungba.

Temitayo was rushed to Aduloju Hospital along Iwaro road where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The University’s Student Union source told Peoples Gazette that Temitayo had intervened in a naira payment dispute between an “Egbon Adugbo” and a third party, where he promised to settle the bill for the latter.

Temitayo was able to reimburse the perpetrators 3000 naira out of the 4000 naira but was unable to pay the remaining 1,000 naira outstanding which resulted into an argument causing the death of the fresh graduate.

“A guy (the third party) was owing them money,” the source said “and he told them (the perpetrators) that he will help the guy to pay the money to avoid drama. So he paid 3k out of the 4K and couldn’t raise the last 1k. So they started disturbing him and he said they should stop disturbing him that he did not owe them that he only rendered a help and this afternoon(today) a guy came into the villa.”

“As usual they acted as Egbon ADUGBO to collect money. So he said he can’t give them, which led into an argument as if they’d meant to deal with him … and they came from nowhere to stab him after a lot of arguments and they scattered the villa with bottles and spoiled our gate.”

Federal Government has yet to meet most of our demands – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said that the Federal Government is yet to address most of the demands it made during the strike it embarked upon in 2022.

ASUU had in October 2022, called off an eight-month strike after a series of negotiations with the Federal Government.

Part of the lecturers’ demands is the release of revitalization funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

In an interview with Channels TV on Thursday, April 6, ASUU president, Emmanuel Osodeke, said the government is yet to address most of its demands including the payment of salary backlogs.

“As far as this present government is concerned, once the strike is over, the issue is resolved unknown to them that a strike is a symptom of a problem. They have abandoned the problem. Since we called off the strike based on a court directive, not a single meeting has been called. Not a kobo has been paid,” he said

According to him, the union members are battling to meet up with the academic calendar in spite of the government’s posture.

“It is so unfortunate that they don’t have any regard for the Nigerian education system,” Osodeke added.

The ASUU chief also spoke about the recently approved N320.3 billion 2023 intervention for public tertiary institutions. He commended the government for the fund release and asked for redistribution of the fund to ensure 90% goes to the tertiary institutions.

“It (N320bn fund) is a good development, this is part of what we struggle for in 1994, it is our struggle, but there are issues we need to sort out,” Osodeke said.

When you check the allocation of about N1.2 billion to universities and others, you find out that the total for all the universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education come to just about N186 billion allocated out of about N320, leaving a balance of N132 billion that has not been accounted for. What are we using that N132 billion which is 41% of the total amount of money? Is it for bureaucracy or for what?

“This is what has been happening in TETFund and I think there is a need to examine what exactly is happening at TETFund. The idea of this TETFund when it was negotiated by ASUU was that this money will come and be distributed to the universities, not keeping 41% for whatever purpose.

“I think we need a redistribution of this fund to ensure that it accounts for 90% of what has been approved to go to universities, polytechnic and not kept as bureaucracy or whatever. You need to tell the public what TETFund is doing with the balance of N132 billion,” the ASUU chairman said.

NAPTIP arrests cultists in Abuja over sextortion

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) says it has arrested cultists in Abuja perpetrating gruesome acts of sextortion.

This is contained in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday by NAPTIP spokesman Vincent Adekoye.

The statement said the arrests followed intense surveillance and undercover operations ordered by NAPTIP director-general Fatima Waziri-Azi, in response to several complaints.

NAPTIP added that the arrest was a breakthrough for the agency in its efforts to address issues of sextortion and nip it in the bud in Nigeria.

It explained that the group was known for perpetrating gruesome acts of sextortion and terrorising young girls, other Abuja residents, and its environs.

He recalled that the agency had recently been inundated with a series of complaints from victims of sextortion who had been blackmailed with a plea for assistance.

According to the anti-trafficking agency, sextortion is a crime that occurs when someone threatens to distribute nudes and private videos of another person and when that person refuses to grant them sexual favours or pay them money.

It, however, said it was sexual exploitation where the perpetrator used coercion and threats to compel the victim to produce sexual images or videos engaging in sexual acts, revealing that the crime was punishable under the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015 (as reenacted).

“The shame, fear, and confusion victims feel when caught in this cycle often prevent them from asking for help or reporting the abuse,” said Ms Waziri-Azi.

She advised young girls to be wary of this trend and protect themselves by reporting cases of sextortion to NAPTIP.

“Do not be gaslighted into thinking it was your fault. It is a crime and a crime against you. Report all perpetrators. If you do not report, you are emboldening these criminals, and what happened to you will definitely happen to someone else,” the NAPTIP chief stated.

She added;

“Parents, please support your children if they report cases of sextortion to you. Do not revile them. A lapse in judgment should not lead to condemnation. If you or someone you know is a sextortion victim, you can help stop the harassment by reporting it to NAPTIP. Save all conversations, chats, or messages between yourself and the perpetrator.”

The NAPTIP boss urged sextortion victims “not pay or share more of your sexual images with them” and warned that “your webcam or recording devices can be activated remotely.”

“Never have your phone or other electronic camera devices pointed at you while undressing or in a position you would not want to share with the world. Be smart and stay safe,” stated Ms Waziri-Azi.

Lagos government arrests three for breaching physical planning permit law

The Lagos government says it has apprehended two site supervisors and another person for breaching its physical planning permit law.

Abimbola Umeh, the spokeswoman for the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA), said this in a statement on Tuesday.

The suspects, all male and aged 31, 21 and 53 years, were arrested at No. 5, Eromosele Street, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, by the authority’s enforcement team and the Lagos task force.

The statement said the suspects were arrested for breaking the government’s seal to continue construction illegally on a sealed property.

LASPPPA general manager Kehinde Osinaike said the trio would be prosecuted for unlawfully breaking the government’s seal, bypassing the restriction to continue construction works without authorisation.

Mr Osinaike explained that the property was served notices and sealed by LASPPPA officials, after which the owner bypassed the seal.

He added that the violators instructed workers to return to the site without visiting the district office of LASPPPA in Ikoyi to start obtaining a permit before continuing construction.

According to him, the arrest will serve as a deterrent to miscreants and others violating Lagos’s physical planning permit laws by removing seals without authorisation.

The LASPPPA general manager stated;

“The state will no longer condone any disregard to town planning laws as this usually results in losses in the long run.”

In another development, LASPPPA said it had re-sealed an illegal petrol station at No. 1, Robinson Gbagi Street, Ajao Estate, during a joint enforcement exercise with officials of Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

According to the statement, it was discovered that the filling station’s owner continued construction despite a stop work order and sealing of the site on March 18, 2022, due to non-conformity to physical planning regulations.

It noted that the filling station, which had reached the completion level, would remain sealed until the owner met all necessary provisions of the law.
