Road crashes claim over 40,000 lives annually in Nigeria – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, says over 40,000 people die annually as a result of road crashes in Nigeria.

Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu spoke on Monday May 15, in Abuja during activities marking the 7th United Nations Global Road Safety Week.

He said that these facts were the unholy statistics of Road Traffic Crashes and injuries which were a leading cause of death and disability.

He also said that 1.3 million people were killed and as many as 50 million people get injured each year globally.

According to him, there is no greater threat to people, aged 5-29 years than Road Traffic Crashes, as one in every four deaths occurs among pedestrians and cyclists.

“In Nigeria, over 40,000 persons die annually as a result of this avoidable scourge,“ he said. The FRSC boss said that the United Nations had developed a global plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030. He said that it reflected an ambitious target to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries, which would be by 50 per cent by 2030. Biu said that the 2023 edition of the event with the theme, ‘’Sustainable Transport‘’ is slated for Monday to Sunday.

He said,

“FRSC is partnering with the World Health Organisation, Federal Ministry of Health and United Nations Decade of Action on Road Safety and Injury Prevention to mark the event with various activities.

According to him, the need to take action to ensure safe roads, vehicles, and behaviours as well as to improve emergency care is paramount.

“The 7th UN Global Road Safety Week is focusing on sustainable transport with the slogan #RethinkMobility, which necessitates the urgent need to shift to walking, cycling, and using public transport.

“The key messages of this year’s event centre on the need for governments and their partners to rethink mobility.

“Ensuring safety must be at the core of efforts to re-imagine mobility and thus road networks must be designed with the most-at-risk in mind, “he said.

The Corps Marshal, however, called on government at all levels and partners to rethink mobility with a mindset of providing access to safe and affordable mobility systems for all.

Biu stressed the need for government to make available accessible, resilient, low and sustainable mobility systems to create livable cities that would fulfill the mobility needs of all.

This, he said was to ensure safety at all cost, adding that the road network must be designed in consideration of the vulnerable road users who were the most at risk in mind.

He noted that this would ensure that they feel safe walking and cycling, adding that this would further promote good health, sustainable cities, and equitable society.

Meanwhile, the Focal Person/Country representative, UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, Prof. Sydney Ibeanusi, said that government would continue to put the issue of road safety on the front burner.

Ibeanusi said that Nigeria had a better system, saying “what we want to show the world was that the system actually exists.

“Nigeria has been chosen as a country to improve cycling, and Abuja has been chosen as one of the five states globally.

This is for a project implementation to encourage cycling and we will not relent in our efforts,“ he said.

We’re engaging traditional rulers to curb transborder crimes- NIS

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) says the agency is engaging traditional rulers in various states to curb transborder crimes across the country.

The Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO) comptroller of immigration, Mr Tony Akuneme, disclosed this on Sunday in Abuja.

Mr Akuneme said that Nigeria had extensive borders, adding that It was necessary to deploy manpower and technology.

He said that the service had deployed MIDAS technology, saying it was used in monitoring what was going on in the borders.

He added that at least MIDAS was powered by foreign countries helping NIS to ensure that the borders were tight and in control.

According to him, NIS has taken a step further to visit traditional rulers in the border communities so as not to engage in transborder crimes.

“We have visited a couple of the Obas (Alake of Egba in Ogun, Shehu of Borno among others) and the idea is to engage the border communities to make them know they have a stake in securing these borders.

“So for me it’s an extra mile, apart from the regular policing of the borders by officers, we have also gone into public relations and then enlightenment.

“This is so, just to make sure that people don’t think it’s not their business but that everybody is involved in the issue of securing our borders,” he said.

FG spends N1 million annually on each inmate- Rauf Aregbesola

The federal government says it spends N1 million annually to cater for each of the inmates at the correctional facilities in the country.

Sola Fasure, the media adviser to the minister of interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

According to the statement, the minister said this while inaugurating a 20-bed COVID-19 Crisis Intervention Fund Hospital and Equipment at the maximum security custodial centre, Port Harcourt.

The minister said that the project would be an enduring legacy and a testimony of the utmost importance the federal government had so far taken corrections, the welfare of inmates as well as the staff.

Mr Aregbesola added that President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration had, to a large extent, addressed the problem of inmates contracting diseases in custodial centres.

“The custodial centres were frighteningly centres for contracting diseases like scabies and tuberculosis, among others.

“Happily, this has been addressed by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration and is now a thing of the past.

“We not only have well-manned clinics and well-stocked pharmacies, the inmates at the custodial centres now have access to excellent medical care beyond the centres,” he said.

The minister also decried the enormous challenges of running correctional services with huge demands for infrastructure, equipment and maintaining the welfare of inmates.

He, however, assured that the Federal Government had provided long-term solution to the challenges.

“This centre in Port Harcourt, with a capacity for 1,800 inmates, presently houses about 3,067 inmates.

This is just a reflection of the situation in most urban custodial centres where we have congestion at the moment.

“The facilities and even the personnel are overstretched, but we are coping and providing long-term solutions to this challenge.

“One of such solution is the construction of mega 3,000-capacity custodial villages in six geo-political zones of the country. The one for the South-South is in Bori, not far from here in Rivers.

“The ones for the North-West in Janguza, Kano and the North-Central, in Karshi, Abuja, are ready. Hopefully, we shall inaugurate the one in Kano in a few days, before our departure.

“Even work is steadily going on in the others and has reached an appreciable level.

“Let me also reiterate that the Federal Government will stop feeding inmates incarcerated for breaching state laws.

As you commence your budget process for next year, include feeding of your inmates,” he said.

Mr Aregbesola said that he had no doubt that the facility would go a long way in addressing the medical concerns of inmates and correctional service personnel.

The minister commended the management and staff of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) for working hard to keep the virus away.

He added that the new hospital was an intervention aimed at making robust healthcare for those in custody and the NCoS staff.

Aregbesola said that the beauty of all the interventions in consonance with other reforms in the NCoS would obviously translate to security, peace and tranquillity in and around the centres and ultimately the entire country.

Plateau workers begin indefinite strike

Plateau workers have commenced an indefinite strike after the failure of the government to meet their demands.

The action was declared in a notice of strike issued by the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), Plateau chapter, on Wednesday night in Jos.

The notice, jointly signed by Plateau JNC chairman Titus Malau and secretary Timothy Gopep, said the strike followed the expiration of four days extension of the earlier seven-day ultimatum given to the government.

They said the ultimatum and the extension were communicated in their letters dated April 19, 2023, and May 3, 2023.

The JNC officials explained that the council held a meeting on May 10 with the head of the civil service and the secretary to the government of the state in attendance.

“It is evidently clear that the government has not shown enough commitment to address the issues as presented in our charter of demands before its tenure expires, as earlier promised,” the workers noted.

“However, following a joint meeting between the JNC and Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) leadership, it was resolved that an indefinite strike action be declared.”

The workers added,

“The action is imperative since the government reneged in fulfilling its own part of the agreement despite a series of promises. We are, therefore, directing all our affiliate unions that the strike commenced from midnight of May 10, 2023.”

According to them, all affiliate unions are directed to adhere strictly and ensure total compliance until workers’ demands are met.

The workers are battling the Plateau government over unpaid salaries, among many other demands.

Civil Defence nabs father for raping daughter

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it arrested a 41-year-old father in Kogi for raping his 16-year-old daughter.

Speaking after parading the suspect on Wednesday at NSCDC command headquarters in Lokoja, the commandant, Ahmad Gandi, said the command received a complaint from an NGO on May 5.

According to him, the complaint was on a case of defilement, rape and incest in which the suspect is the victim’s biological father.

The sexual abuse was on for three years, from 2020 to 2023, since the victim was 16.

Mr Gandi said the victim’s younger sister advised her that they should either commit suicide or kill their father to free themselves from the abusive father.

The commandant said the father had admitted committing the act, saying he would be charged to court after concluding the investigation.

Mr Gandi commended the NGO for reporting the case to the command while urging other victims in the society who were dying in silence to come out and report such cases.

The victim told journalists that she had been sexually abused by her father since 2020 after her mother left home.

“It happened in 2020 when my mum left home, and since then, my dad has been sexually abusing me.

In 2021, my father impregnated me and took me to a clinic where they aborted the pregnancy I had for him,” the daughter stated.

“I couldn’t leave the house because of my younger sister as I was afraid my father could do the same thing to my sister.”

She added,

“After aborting the pregnancy, he continued the sexual abuse until I couldn’t take it anymore, which I had to report to an NGO who reported the case to NSCDC.”

On his part, the suspect admitted to having committed the act and dis-flowered his daughter, saying he was hypnotised after his wife left her in 2020.

“I actually committed the act, but I don’t know how I did it. I love my wife very well. I begged her to come back home, but she never did for the past three years,” the father stated.

“It is the same stage I was in when my mother left my father, that my wife left my children for me and went away. I love my wife, but she never comes back to me.”

In his comment, Abdulrasak Ibrahim, the executive director of the Islamic Centre for Communication and Creative Thought (ItrippleCT), commended the NSCDC for doing a fantastic job by swinging into action to arrest the suspect.

Mr Ibrahim noted that after hearing about the issue, the victim was immediately relocated to a safe place from her father’s house to protect her from further abuse.
