11 killed, 30 wounded as explosion rocks funeral of assassinated Afghan governor

An explosion inside a mosque in Northern Afghanistan on Thursday killed 11 people during the funeral service for an Afghan acting provincial governor who was assassinated earlier in the week, officials say.

The blast occurred in Faizabad the capital of Badakhsan, an Afghanistan province that shares borders with China and Tajikistan.

About 30 people were also injured by the blast according to the Taliban-run Ministry of Interior which condemned the attack in a statement.

The funeral was in memory of Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi, a Taliban provincial deputy governor who was killed by a suicide bomber on Tuesday.

IS claimed responsibility for the attack which saw a suicide bomber drive a car filled with explosives close to Mr Ahmadi’s car.

The suicide bomber detonated the explosives leading to the death of Mr Ahmadi and his driver.

The assassinated deputy governor was being laid to rest at the mosque when an explosion went off, killing 11 people and injuring over 30 people in the mosque.

Former Afghan president Hamid Karzai took to Twitter to condemn the Thursday blast at the mosque.

He also conveyed his condolences to the affected families.

Taliban security forces have sealed off the scene of the attack, mounting checkpoints on roads that lead to the mosque.

Nigeria is losing bright youths to other Countries – Gbajabiamila tells new lawmakers

Outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila had urged lawmakers to act quickly as youths in the country have lost faith in Nigeria and are securing their futures in other countries of the world.

He spoke on Wednesday, June 7 at a valedictory session organized for the 9th National Assembly in Abuja.

Gbajabiamila, who would start work next week as the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, said the executive and legislative arms of the government must act fast or there will be continuous exodus of bright youths to Europe.

Addressing his colleagues, Gbajabiamila said;

“Honourable colleagues, despite the considerable investments we have made to improve our public infrastructure and the numerous reforms we have enacted to change how we administer the government, our country faces many significant challenges.

“These challenges have caused many of our fellow citizens to wonder if the promise of democracy will ever become real in their lives. Too many of our young people have lost faith entirely and are choosing in droves to seek their fortunes and their futures in other lands.

“We are losing some of our best and brightest, and if we don’t act now, the consequences of this loss will shortly become painfully evident.

“How do we ensure a healthy, vigorous, growing economy that provides opportunities for all who work hard to succeed through their labour and ingenuity?

“How do we protect our people from the marauders and insurgents, the petty criminals and assorted villains who wish to harm them, whether for profit or in service of other agendas?

“How do we restore faith in our young people so that so many of them no longer feel like the only way to achieve their best aspirations is to chase their fortunes in far away, often hostile lands?

“These are the critical questions all of us in government must answer or risk the unforgiving judgment of history. With each new day, we have an opportunity to make the hard choices and take the necessary actions to guarantee our nation’s future. With each new day, we have less time to act and a more outstanding obligation to act quickly.”

Man remanded for stabbing friend to death in Lagos

A Magistrate court sitting in Yaba, Lagos state, has ordered the remand of a 38-year-old man identified as Raphael Agu in the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, Lagos State, for allegedly stabbing his friend, Stanley Ugo, to death.

Agu was dragged before the court on a two count charge of murder.

The prosecution team told the court that Agu and the deceased engaged in a heated argument after he was accused of not disbursing effectively the N15, 000 a developer was erecting around the transformer Bus stop area in Ogudu.

The developer had on May 25, 2023, asked Agu to disburse the money to some of the area boys. After Agu had shared the money, the deceased and one other person came back and accused him of not disbursing the money efficiently. This caused a heated argument which generated into a fight.

The prosecution team told the court that during the fight, Agu stabbed Ugo in the stomach with a knife.

The prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the offence contravened Section 222 and is punishable under Section 233 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.

NLC explains why it didn’t embark on a strike over subsidy removal

The Nigeria Labour Congress has said that it decided to call off its strike over the removal of fuel subsidy partly in obedience to an order of the National Industrial Court (NICN).

In a communique issued after an emergency National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, June 6, the NLC faulted the court order, saying it amounted to an abuse of ex-parte injunction.

The group directed all affiliates and state councils to suspend mobilisation until the outcome of the negotiations.

The statement read;

“An emergency National Executive Council (NEC) of the Congress which was called to discuss the outcome of the Dialogue between the NLC and the Federal Government on the petroleum products price hike after extensive deliberation observed that:

“The previous NEC-in-session had ordered a nationwide withdrawal of services and mass protest over the petroleum price hike by the federal government.

“Whereas the Federal Government was in breach of the 2023 Appropriation Act, the NLC will not encourage lawlessness on its part.

“Taking into account that the Federal Government has procured a court injunction restraining Congress from proceeding with the proposed nationwide strike as the NEC-in-session had ordered to begin, Wednesday, the 7th of June, 2023.

“Recognizing the willingness of government for continuous engagement through dialogue and to offer reasonable palliatives in due course to cushion the effect of its policies and some levels of understanding reached.

“Considering the mood of the socio-polity last elections and the need to pursue national stability.

“Consequently, the NEC-in-session resolved as follows: to commend and applaud the diligence of the Congress’ leadership in carrying out the assignment given to it by NEC.

“To demonstrate to the Federal Government the need to comply with the laws of the land especially as it concerns obedience to the rulings of the courts and their brazen disregard to the 2023 Appropriation Act.

“To, therefore, support and accept the decision of the leadership of Congress to suspend the proposed strike action in compliance with the flawed rulings of the NIC and also allow negotiations to flow freely and enable final agreement during or after the 19th June 2023 negotiation round with the federal government.

“To, however, register in strongest terms its disgust and disapproval with the ruling of the National Industrial Court (NIC) for its continuous weaponisation of the instrument of ex-parte injunction in favour of government against the interests of Nigerian workers in defiance of the position of the Supreme Court on the use of this instrument.

“All Affiliates and State Councils of Congress are hereby directed to suspend further action and mobilisation until the outcome of the final negotiations.

“To commend all affiliates and state councils on their robust mobilisation towards a successful nationwide strike action and to also remain vigilant in case there is a need to continue.”

Rapper Lil Tjay arrested again over alleged reckless endangerment

American rapper Lil Tjay has been arrested again over alleged reckless endangerment. This is his second arrest in New York City this year.

Tjay’s lawyer Dawn Florio told TMZ that the rapper was filming a short clip for a music video when cops arrived on the scene in Manhattan and took him in for reckless endangerment.

He captured his arrest on video, too, as he happened to be live streaming on Tuesday, June 6, during the ordeal. Some folks in the crowd told him to stop resisting as his phone ended up in someone else’s hand.

The 22-year-old rapper who is lucky to be alive after getting shot 7 times in a 2022 New Jersey robbery, was also arrested in January after a traffic stop in the Bronx while en route to shoot a video with Ice Spice. Nicki Minaj sued for allegedly damaging borrowed jewelry

Rapper Nicki Minaj has been dragged to court for allegedly refusing to pay for a borrowed custom jewelry she allegedly damaged.

The rapper is being sued by a West Hollywood jeweler who claims they loaned out some jewelry to the rapper. The jeweler claims some of those pieces came back damaged.

In documents obtained by TMZ, it was alleged that Nicki’s stylist Brett Alan Nelson signed a contract with Roseark jewelry store, with Roseark agreeing to loan Nicki jewelry for a public appearance.

The store claims the contract called for Brett to return the bling within a week and pay for any damages the jewelry might incur under his watch.

It was alleged that Nicki’s stylist failed to return 66 pieces of jewelry by the agreed upon deadline, and, when Brett finally forked over the bling, there was noticeable damage to a set of earrings and a leaf ring.

However, sources close to Nicki are insisting that everything was returned on time as promised and it was only after items were in the jeweler’s possession for some time that the store complained about a missing stone.

The jewelry store says it sent invoices to Brett for the damage, which it says totals $26,239.50 plus interest. The folks at Roseark claim they haven’t gotten paid, despite their repeated attempts to collect.

Roseark is suing Nicki and her stylist for the money even though it appears Nikki never had any direct dealings with the jeweler.

Reacting to the lawsuit, Nicki’s attorney, Jordan Siev, said;

“We have not been presented with any evidence that any of the jewelry at issue was damaged by Nicki. This lawsuit appears to be nothing more than an ordinary insurance claim by the jeweler designed to generate publicity for itself and extract a payment to which it is not entitled. We will defend the lawsuit vigorously.”

EFCC to appeal judgement acquitting former Head of Service, Stephen Oronsaye of N2bn money laundering charge

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said that it would appeal a judgement acquitting Stephen Oronsaye, former head of service of the federation, of the N2 billion money laundering charge brought against him.

Oronsaye was in 2016 arraigned alongside Osarenkhoe Afe, Managing Director of Fedrick Hamilton Global Services Limited, on a 49-count charge.

The charges were later amended to 22, after it was separated from that of the former head of the Presidential Pension Task Force, Abdulrasheed Maina, who was then at large.

The former Head of Service was accused of using three companies; Cluster Logistic Limited, Kangolo Dynamic Cleaning Limited, and Drew Investment & Construction Company Limited, to divert money during the civil service biometric data project.

Ruling on the case on Monday, June 5, Justice Inyang Ekwo held that the allegations by the EFCC lacked merit as they failed to provide adequate evidence to warrant Oronsaye’s conviction.

However, the anti-graft accused the judge of overlooking the evidence of the 21 witnesses called in during the trial as well as the confessional statement of one of the defendants, Osarenkhoe Afe.

UNILAG student shot dead by armed robbers

A 23-year-old student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) identified simply as Adekunle, was shot dead by armed robbers while trying to retrieve his friend’s stolen phone.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says a peacetime health system is needed to better prepare for the next pandemic.

NCDC director-general Ifedayo Adetifa said this on Monday in Abuja at the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) and the International Research Centre of Excellence (IRCE) Scientific Seminar.

Mr Adetifa said there was a need to develop libraries for rapid diagnostic, therapeutic and vaccine development in anticipation of disease ‘X’.

He said Nigeria also needed to intensify its health promotion, disease prevention and emergency response approaches.

The NCDC chief added that a strengthened laboratory diagnosis capacity and coordinated surveillance could not be overwhelmed.

According to him, data, data and more data, freely shared, will allow for better decision-making across the country.

Mr Adetifa, however, mentioned that the country’s key lesson from the COVID-19 pandemic was the role of political will and specific strategies.

He said that reliable data was critical for informed decision-making, while Strategic collaboration and partnership were essential.

The director-general of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Babatunde Salako, also stressed the need for adequate funding for research in the country.

Mr Salako explained that funding must be provided to research the area of disease surveillance, prevention, detection and treatment in the country. While commending IHVN for its continuous efforts towards research in the country, he said that NIMR would continue to support its efforts in Nigeria.

Alash’le Abimiku, the executive director of the International Research Center of Excellence, IHVN, said IRCE possessed a clear vision and mission which align with IHVN’s.

According to Ms Abimiku, IRCW provides leadership in research in Nigeria and West Africa through globally standardized expertise, transparency and accountability, positively shifting the culture of research in Africa.

She said that IRCE has the following main objectives — to fulfil its goal of creating an enabling environment for creative thinking and innovation in science to address Nigeria’s and global health priorities.

“Fosters collaborations and synergism between Nigeria’s finest researchers and their counterparts at international research institutions and universities,” Ms Abimiku stressed.

“Provides a safety net that protects IHVN and its collaborators from liability by proactively ensuring that research conducted at IHVN is under the highest scientific and ethical standards.”

Tinubu should have listened to Nigerians before removing petrol subsidy- NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress, Ebonyi chapter, says President Bola Tinubu should have listened to the poor masses before the removal of fuel subsidy.

Oguguo Egwu, NLC chair in Ebonyi, said this in an interview on Monday in Abakaliki.

Following Mr Tinubu’s announcing the subsidy removal, NLC and its affiliates declared a nationwide strike scheduled for Wednesday. The strike has now been suspended.

“NLC and all its affiliate members are ready to embark on the strike, and this is a total withdrawal of services nationwide. In Ebonyi, we are ready, and mobilisation of workers has commenced,” said Mr Egwu before the late-night truce the government and labour unions reached.

“We enjoined the general public to support the action because this will lead to the reversal of the old fuel pump price regime.”

The labour leader added,

“The increase has led to the suffering of the masses. Imagine paying N550 per litre of fuel in Ebonyi here. Go back to the status quo and let us have room for negotiation. There is a need to listen to the poor.”

He noted that the federal government could do it “without inflicting wounds on citizens,” stressing Mr Tinubu’s government to “make sure that the people are not suffering.”

Ikechukwu Igwenyi, the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Ebonyi State University, pointed out that government policies should serve the interest of citizens.

“Well, there is nothing wrong with removing the subsidy, but there must be a palliative to cushion the effect of the subsidy. You don’t just remove it just like that,” said Mr Igwenyi.

The ASUU leader added, “Do it for the interest of the masses. There is a need to revert to the status quo, and labour unions can go to the round table. The people must understand the subsidy regime before removing it.”
