557,626 candidates admitted into tertiary institutions- JAMB

The registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Ishaq Oloyede, says 557,626 candidates from 1.8 million applications have been admitted into tertiary institutions across the country in its 2022 admission processes.

Mr Oloyede said this at the 2023 policy meeting on admissions into tertiary institutions in Abuja, Saturday.

Mr Oloyede said that the 2022 admission process is still ongoing due to opportunities given to some key players in the sector to conduct admissions.

The registrar, who discredited notions from the public that JAMB gave admissions, said admission depended on the availability of candidates’ five o’level requirements as UTME was only meant for admission ranking.

“As at June 19, tertiary institutions have admitted 557,626 candidates but as we speak today, the admission is up to 600,000 as we target about 700,000. This is because admission is still ongoing.

“We hear about cut-off marks by JAMB but the truth is that not the best candidate who scored the highest mark in UTME is the best candidate.

“Admission is based on the five o’level results that a candidate possess because we only make use of UTME for admission ranking. JAMB has not initiated admissions since 2016,” he said.

Speaking on gaps in admission vacancies and why candidates were not admitted, Mr Oloyede said rigidity of programme choice and mismatch of demand and supply were responsible.

He also listed lack of interest for existing vacancies and trail candidates (No o’level results or awaiting results) as responsible for admission gaps in the tertiary institutions.

He, therefore, said that the onus lay with institutions to determine the national minimum tolerable UTME score, often called the ‘Cut-off marks’.

The permanent secretary, federal ministry of education, David Adejo, urged the stakeholders to ensure fairness, transparency and accountability in the admission processes, which determined the fate of millions of students.

Mr Adejo called on admission stakeholders to ensure credibility in the process so that no candidate would be denied admission and no undeserving candidate was given admission.

“The federal ministry of education has resolved that the fundamental principle of the ministry is openness and this has been provided by JAMB through inclusiveness in the UTME.

“JAMB must ensure sanity and integrity of exams and admission must be based on agreed guidelines to deepen accountability, transparency and fairness.

“Criteria for admissions remained critical by JAMB and all institutions must abide by them as we need to stick to the approved quota for admission,” he said.

In a goodwill message, the executive secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Abubakar Rasheed, commended the board on its role in ensuring sanity in the education sector.

Mr Rasheed, represented by the deputy executive secretary of the commission, Chris Maiyaki, pledged the commission’s commitment to JAMB to fulfill its mandate.

He said that the policy meeting was a game-changer moment for tertiary institutions to take the leading role in the education sector.

In the same vein, the chairman, JAMB equal opportunity group, Peter Okebukola, commended JAMB for its interest in the education of the visually impaired and other physically challenged candidates.

Mr Okebukola said in the last several years, the board had processed admissions of 2,700 candidates who were visually impaired, those in the correctional centres and the down syndrome candidates.

He added that the Nigerian higher education system was the ‘move and shaker’ of African higher education sector, hence the need to get things right, especially in the area of admission processes.

The policy meeting had in attendance representatives from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), vice chancellors of universities and rectors of Polytechnics.

Others are provosts of Colleges of Education (COE), registrars and admission officers of tertiary institutions, heads of federal agencies, National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).

Over N10 billion properties destroyed in fire incidents in Cross River

Properties worth N10.38 billion were destroyed by fire in Cross River in 13 incidents within six months, the Federal Fire Service said on Friday.

State Controller Olomola Olumayowa revealed in Calabar that the destruction was recorded between January and June.

Ms Olumayowa said the command responded swiftly to the fire incidents, adding that three persons died and two others sustained injury within the period.

The controller, however, stressed that the command’s commitment in fighting fire outbreaks was being hampered by lack of fire equipment.

According to her, provision of mini firefighting equipment (water tenders) to navigate difficult terrain will greatly help the service because not all routes were accessible by fire appliances.

“We want provision of more fire stations in Calabar and its environs; as it stands now, we only have one fire engine in the state. These stations can be equipped with mini firefighting equipment.

“We are also in need of a tanker to move alongside the fire engine to reduce the number of times we go for refilling after exhausting our water on fire grounds,” she said.

Ms Olumayowa appealed for more collaboration with security agencies in the state.“Security agencies should continue to come to our rescue; our men were almost mobbed at the last fire scene at Bogobiri,” she stated.

10,000kg of heroin, cocaine, tramadol, meth seized in Kaduna- NDLEA

On Thursday, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kaduna said its operatives arrested 420 suspects and seized 10,599,97kg of illicit drugs.

The state commander, NDLEA, Ibrahim Braji, disclosed this at a media briefing in Commemoration of World Drug Day, which is marked on June 26 every year.

Mr Braji said the arrests and seizures were made from January to June 22, 2023.

He disclosed that 420 suspects were arrested, 171 of them charged to court, 59 were convicted, and 190 were counselled.

The command also rehabilitated 34 others, all within the period under review.

The commander said the 10,559,97kg of drugs seized included Indian hemp, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, tramadol and other psychotropic substances.

The commander explained that this year’s campaign is designed to combat stigmatization and discrimination against people who use drugs.

“This year’s world drug day is a call to raise awareness about the negative impact of stigmatization and discrimination against people who use drugs and their families,” Mr Braji said.

The day also raises awareness about the importance of treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy by offering alternatives to punishment and prioritising prevention.

According to him, drug abuse in Kaduna state is a complex issue that affects the generality of the people and, by extension, the nation.

“Many people who use drugs face stigma and discrimination, which further harm their physical and mental health and prevent them from getting help,” he said.

The commander commended the Kaduna government, traditional rulers, NGOs and the media for supporting the renewed war on drugs.

“We are calling on the public to continue supporting the eradication of drug abuse and trafficking in their communities and the state by providing vital information to the command at all times,” Mr Braji said.

The awareness campaign will be taken to places of worship, motor parks and schools to celebrate World Drug Day.

Plateau student jailed for stealing phone

An Area Court sitting in Jos, Plateau State, on Wednesday, sentenced an 18-year-old student, Abubakar Adam, to nine months imprisonment for stealing a phone.

The judge, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced Adam after a summary trial following his guilty plea.

Bokkos, who sentenced the defendant to nine months in prison, however, gave him an option of N10,000 fine.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the judge also ordered the convict to pay N100,000 as compensation to the complainant.

He held that the judgment would serve as a deterrent to other would-be offenders.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported by the complainant, Habizu Hassan, on February 20, at the ”C” Division.

Gokwat alleged that the convict trespassed into the complainant’s room and stole his Samsung phone valued at N85,000 and sold it to one Abdullahi Gambo for N13,000.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of the Penal Code Law of the state.

Nine smugglers detained after 100 died in capsized boat

Nine suspected smugglers were remanded in custody after a boat accident in which about 100 migrants died in the Mediterranean Sea.

A court in the Greek port city of Kalamata made the ruling on Tuesday evening, state broadcaster ERT reported on Wednesday.

The Egyptians, aged between 20 and 40, were accused of forming a criminal organisation and endangering lives on the high seas.

It was suspected that they belonged to an international gang. The charges were based on statements by survivors who identified the nine men as the crew of the sunken fishing vessel.

The Egyptians were rescued from the vessel that capsized on June 14, along with 95 other people.

In the meantime, another body has been pulled from the Mediterranean Sea just over 90 kilometres to the west of the Greek peninsula of the Peloponnese.

This brings the number of fatalities to 82, according to the Coastguard. The 30-metre-long fishing vessel sank in international waters last week with up to 700 people on board. It had set sail from Libya with Italy as its destination.

The vast majority of the migrants were swept to the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, about 5,000 metres deep at the point where it sank.Their bodies will probably never be recovered.

There were accusations against the coastguards for not helping the people while in distress at sea, an accusation the Greek authorities had rejected.

Veterinarians warn about suspected rabies in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Residents Veterinary Doctors Association has called on state residents to take precautions over a suspected case of rabies.

Khalifa Aliyu, chairman of the association, made the call in a statement on Wednesday in Kaduna.

Mr Aliyu said the call became necessary following a suspected case of human rabies in a teenage boy currently hospitalised at the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Kaduna.

“The patient has shown traits of rabies infection; he was seen biting humans, objects, papers, wood, and tongue thrusting along the street. Investigation revealed that the patient had contact with a rodenticide and later ate his food without washing his hands,” stated the association’s chair.

The chairman said all necessary measures were put in place to contain the further spread of the virus, adding that the patient’s condition is stable.

“We hereby call on the general public to be wary of stray dogs around that axis and report any dog bite to the nearest government clinic or Ministry of Agriculture,” added Mr Aliyu.

Governor Aliyu disguises, rides tricycle to inspect Sokoto’s specialist hospital

Governor Ahmad Aliyu has disguised himself and visited the Sokoto Specialist Hospital to ascertain the quality of services provided to residents.

The governor’s press secretary Abubakar Bawa said this in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement, the governor’s decision to visit the facility unannounced followed a series of concerns raised by Sokoto residents over poor service delivery.

The statement added that other concerns that forced the governor to visit the hospital were dilapidated structures, erratic power supply, shortage of staff and lack of functional medical equipment, among others.

The governor visited the hospital in a tricycle to get first-hand information from its workers.

“I was surprised with what I saw during my visit to the hospital, which lasted for four hours; it afforded me the opportunity to see things for myself,” Mr Aliyu explained.

“Patients and their relatives are subjected to all kinds of hazardous situations owing to the dirty environment and lack of functional equipment in the medical facility.”

The Sokoto governor added,

“Patient relatives rely solely on their personal alternative source of power due to the erratic electricity supply in the hospital. Therefore, I have directed the management of the hospital to see me for further discussion on how to remedy the situation.”

The poor state of things at the hospital may not be unconnected with the inability of past administrations to release the monthly allocations due to the hospital.

Governor Mbah seeks cargo terminal at Enugu airport

The federal and Enugu state governments say they will partner to complete and operationalise the international wing of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, including building a cargo terminal to boost the state’s and nation’s economy and tourism capacity.

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria CEO Kabir Mohammed and Governor Peter Mbah disclosed this on Monday in Enugu.

The duo toured the ongoing international terminal building and the proposed site for the international cargo terminal of the airport.

Speaking to journalists after a courtesy visit to the governor and tour of the facility, Mr Mohammed commended Mr Mbah’s zeal and sense of urgency towards the actualisation and operationalisation of the two terminals.

He said there was no better time to discuss partnership and collaboration than now.

“We met with the governor here today with a view to collaborate with FAAN in order to make the international terminal functional,” stated the FAAN boss.

“This is a time to look at things again and again before you will be able to get the right formula for it, and I believe His Excellency has that formula, and within the shortest possible time, I can assure you that this terminal will be put to use.”

He added,

“The first place we went to is supposed to be the cargo terminal, and we have a cargo warehouse in that location as well as the cargo terminal.”

He explained that having a cargo terminal in Enugu would go a long way in improving the economy of the South-East zone and the nation and assisting traders in the region.

Mr Mbah said the operationalisation of the international terminal and construction of the cargo terminal and warehouse at the airport were critical to Enugu’s drive for a $30 billion economy. He described them as enablers of investments and key economic activities in Enugu.

“For us, the cargo terminal is critical. You know that we are migrating agriculture to agro-allied industrialisation. That means agriculture will not just be for food. It will also be for export,” added the Enugu governor.

“The cargo terminal is critical if we are going to engage in the export of agricultural and agro-allied produce from the state. That is why we are looking at partnering with FAAN to ensure that we start and complete a cargo terminal and, indeed, operationalise it.”

The governor also mentioned that the international wing was almost completed, demanding they operationalise it, stressing that they would not be able to make money from it until they got it functional.

“We will not be able to create value for the people of Enugu or South East and indeed the entire country if it is not done. If you look at the huge economic development plan we have expressed to our people, tourism is core there.

We are looking at attracting over three million visitors to Enugu yearly,” explained Mr Mbah.

The governor added,

“That cannot happen just by road, and it is going to occur by flying, getting people from all across the different parts of the world to come to Enugu, and that will mean having an international airport.”

On the funding challenge, Mr Mbah assured that FAAN and the Enugu government would explore funding models to actualise the project.

“Now, we believe that projects like these are bankable because they are also revenue-yielding projects. So, there is no reason why we cannot find a financing model that will work for us and ensure that this project is immediately realised,” the Enugu governor stated.

Mr Mbah also said the state government and the FAAN team had fruitful discussions on the timeline to ensure the speedy completion of both projects.

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned three men, Stanley Gabriel, Yusuf Olaitan, and Ifeanyi Ogbu, for allegedly stealing roofing sheets worth N60m property of a company, Landing Zhao, in the Dopemu area of the state.

The trio were arraigned before Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun on three counts of stealing and receiving stolen goods.

Two of the defendants, Gabriel and Olaitan, were alleged to have taken the materials from the warehouse of the company, sold them to Ogbu and others still at large, and then shared the proceeds among themselves.

The duo, Olaitan and Ogbu, were first arrested and charged to court before the third defendant was also apprehended and charged to court.

The prosecutor, Rita Momoh, told the court that the defendants carried out the offence between January and May 2023 at No. 1, Shitta Street, Dopemu, Lagos.

Momoh told the court that the offences contravened Section 411, 297(7), 328(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The charges read,

“That you, Yusuf Olaitan, Ifeanyi Ogbu, and others at large, between January to May 2023, at No. 1, Shitta Street, Dopemu, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal Gerald roofing sheets valued at N60m, properties of one Landing Zhao, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

“That you, Ifeanyi Ogbu, and others at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did receive Gerald roofing sheets valued at N60m from one Yusuf Olaitan and others at large, knowing well that it was stolen property of one Landing Zhao and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 328(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

The magistrate admitted them to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two responsible sureties each.

She adjourned the case till August 11, 2023, for mention.

Gunmen kidnap Kogi monarch and wife

Suspected gunmen have kidnapped the Oba of Idofin, Shedrack Durojaiye Obibeni, and his wife in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi.

They were kidnapped along Makutu-Idofin road in Kogi State at about 5 pm on Monday, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria.

Confirming the incident, Mr Abdulrasak Asiru, Yagba East Local Government Council Chairman described it as “very shocking” and “sad”.

Asiru said that he was still in shock over the incident which had not happened in the area for almost two years.

“I as the council chairman and the people of Yagba East are in great shock over the kidnap of our respected Oba and his wife this evening.

“This is because we in this LGA have a very robust security architecture keeping vigil and warding off criminal elements away from us.

“This incident was well planned by the kidnappers because from what I learnt, the Oba and his wife only moved out to see something, and in less than 10 minutes that incident happened.

“We smell a rat over this sad incident and we are not resting until we get to the criminal elements who did this dastardly act and rescue our traditional ruler and his wife,” he said.

The council boss said that already alerts and messages have been sent to all the traditional rulers and community leaders in Okun land to be vigilant and conduct a thorough search for the rescue of the couple.

Asiru said: “As we speak, our hunters and vigilante group are already out into the bushes searching for the criminals so as to rescue our Oba and his wife as soon as possible.”

However, the Kogi Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, said he was yet to be briefed by the DPO of the affected area on the incident.

NAFDAC arrests popular Kaduna herbal manufacturer over expired licence

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, on Monday, announced the arrest of the popular Baban Aisha herbal medicine manufacturer, Alhaji Salisu Sani, for operating with an expired licence and running an illegal promotion of the company’s products in Kaduna.

This was even as the agency disclosed that it has commenced a crackdown on illegal herbal manufacturers and vendors to control the random use of illicit drugs.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, reiterated that the agency has a duty to regulate the manufacture, distribution, advertisement and use of drugs, foods and chemicals to protect Nigerians coming down with organ damage, stroke or sudden death.

“The man manufacturing Baban Aisha herbal medicine, Alhaji Salisu Sani, has been arrested and is now in custody. Again, we cannot divorce ourselves from these products. We may not use them because we are informed. What about the fate of other Nigerians who use them?” she said.

Explaining the event that led to the arrest of Sani, Adeyeye said NAFDAC received concerns about the safety of Sacra Herbs oral liquid, popularly called Baban Aisha, following an investigative report.

The Professor of Pharmaceutics noted that further investigation revealed that the Kaduna manufacturer has been churning out unapproved herbal concoctions long after his licence expired.

She said,

“The agency received an application from Sacra Multi-Links Ltd, Layin Alhaji Hamza Mai Bread, Tafa Kagarko LGA in Kaduna State for the registration of its product Sacra Herbs oral liquid.

Following regulatory protocols, we granted listing approval with NAFDAC registration number A7-2590L for the Sacra Herbs oral liquid for the purpose of management of pile and associated pains.

The notification of the registration of the product was granted on September 6, 2018, valid till September 12, 2019.

“The company, on August 12, 2020, applied for renewal of its licence. But following a regulatory audit of the company’s production facility, compliance directives were issued to them for non-conformers observed in the facility which it was expected to correct.

The company, however, did not correct the lapses observed, following which the product registration licence was not renewed.”

Continuing, NAFDAC stated that ‘Sacra herb’, which licence expired in 2019, was originally approved for the management of pile and associated pains but it discovered that Sacra Multi Links went beyond bound the prescription by further adding ‘for treatment of waist pains, typhoid, ulcer, pile and toilet infection to the Baban Aisha product.’

Following outrage on social media over the company’s unethical activities, the agency’s investigation and enforcement team carried out surveillance that led to the sealing of the factory and the arrest of two staff members.

“The following day Sacra Multi Links owner, Salisu Sani, reported to our office in Kaduna. When his vehicle was searched, the following herbal drugs were evacuated from the vehicle: Sacra Herbs oral liquid and two additional unregistered herbal preparations namely Baban Aisha manpower & delay (aphrodisiac) and others. All the products found with the managing director and others found in his company were sent to the NAFDAC laboratory for analysis.

“We have commenced a nationwide mop-up of the Sacra Herbs in circulation. We have also intensified the crackdown on all illegal manufacturers and distributors of herbal preparation and other unregistered preparations, with a view to bringing perpetrators to book and minimise the usage of the substance.

“I would like to appeal to all, particularly the vulnerable group, to desist from the use of this dangerous herbal preparation. I want to assure Nigerians that NAFDAC is doing everything to ensure that only safe medicine and wholesome food of the right quality are sold to our citizens,” she said.

Kwara government provides free bus rides for students, staff

The Kwara Ministry of Tertiary Education has met with stakeholders to work out modalities on transport palliatives by the government to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal on staff and students.

The permanent secretary of the ministry, Habibat Saidu, disclosed this after an interactive meeting with the stakeholders in Ilorin to map out the strategies to be adopted on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s directives.

The meeting had in attendance AbdulRazaq Jiddah, the deans of student affairs of all public tertiary institutions in Kwara, representatives of students’ unions across the tertiary institutions, and representatives of the state chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

The permanent secretary urged stakeholders in various sectors to complement government efforts.

According to her, the interactive meeting is meant to embrace suggestions on allocating the buses to strategic routes within the metropolis to achieve the desired target.

Ms Saidu reiterated that the transportation palliative for staff and students of tertiary institutions is free of charge, warning against extortion.

The Kwara official stressed that staff and students would benefit from the free bus ride only if they presented their institutions’ identification cards.

Mr Jidda urged the students to reciprocate the Kwara government’s gesture by conducting themselves in an orderly manner to sustain the free transportation palliative.

He disclosed further that more palliative measures to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal are underway by the state government.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the NANS chairman Kwara chapter, Yusuf AbdulGafar, suggested that the buses could be stationed at institutions in rural areas to convey students within such rural communities.

The Kwara government had on June 12 approved the deployment of government buses to support the movement of students and workers in public tertiary institutions within Ilorin and its environs to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal.
