South Africa has put its rollout of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine on hold after a study showed “disappointing” results against its new Covid variant.
Scientists say the variant accounts for 90% of new Covid cases in South Africa.
The trial, involving some 2,000 people, found that the vaccine offered “minimal protection” against mild and moderate cases.
But experts are hopeful that the vaccine will still be effective at preventing severe cases.
South Africa has recorded almost 1.5 million coronavirus cases and more than 46,000 deaths since the pandemic began – a higher toll than any other country on the continent.
The country has received one million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab and was preparing to start vaccinating people.
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said his government would wait for further advice on how best to proceed with the AstraZeneca vaccine in light of the findings.
In the meantime, he said, the government would offer vaccines produced by Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer in the coming weeks.
The trial was carried out by researchers at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and the UK’s Oxford University, but has not yet been peer reviewed.
The trial’s chief investigator, Prof Shabir Madhi, said it showed that “unfortunately, the AstraZeneca vaccine does not work against mild and moderate illness”.
Prof Madhi said the study had not been able to investigate the vaccine’s efficacy in preventing more serious infections, as participants had an average age of 31 and so did not represent the demographic most at risk of severe symptoms from the virus.
The vaccine’s similarity to one produced by Johnson & Johnson, which was found in a recent study to be highly effective at preventing severe disease in South Africa, suggested it would still prevent serious illness, according to Prof Madhi.
“There’s still some hope that the AstraZeneca vaccine might well perform as well as the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in a different age group demographic that I address of severe disease,” he told the BBC.
Other experts were also hopeful that the vaccine remained effective at combating more serious cases.
“What we’re seeing from other vaccine developers is that they have a reduction in efficacy against some of the variant viruses and what that is looking like is that we may not be reducing the total number of cases, but there’s still protection in that case against deaths, hospitalisations and severe disease,” Prof Sarah Gilbert, Oxford’s lead vaccine developer, told the Andrew Marr Show on Sunday.
She said developers were likely to have a modified version of the injection against the South Africa variant, also known as 501.V2 or B.1.351, later this year.
Ministers in the UK have sought to reassure the public over the effectiveness of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi said the injection appeared to work well against dominant variants in the UK, while Health Minister Edward Argar said there was “no evidence” the vaccine was not effective at preventing severe illness.
Vaccines are claimed to be the biggest hope in getting out of the coronavirus pandemic and returning to normality. However, they may not be the only solution, or even the best one.
In Israel, professor Nadri Aber has invented a miracle inhaler which can cure COVID-19 in just five days.
His inhaler has an efficacy of 96 percent, with 29 of the 30 patients who trialled it at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Centre recovering rapidly from the virus and leaving the hospital between three and five days. Only one inhalation was enough to fight off the virus, even with more serious cases.
Nadir himself described it as an “unprecedented invention” after seeing the results.
“It is an innovative device based on exosomes enriched in CD24 that can be inhaled directly into the lungs “, said Nadir.
The device now only needs to be approved by national and international health authorities in order to be used amongst the general public.
Israel isn’t the only place where alternatives to vaccines are being studied. In the Gregorio Maranon hospital in Madrid, tests are being carried out with a treatment for serious cases which involves an intravenous injection of enriched immunoglobulin. Early results have been promising with the first two patients to receive the treatment having been released from hospital.

Scientists believe they may have discovered the smallest reptile on earth – a chameleon subspecies that is the size of a seed.
Two of the tiny lizards were discovered by a German-Madagascan expedition team in Madagascar.
The male Brookesia nana, or nano-chameleon, has a body of just 13.5mm.
This makes it the smallest of about 11,500 known species of reptiles, according to the Bavarian State collection of Zoology in Munich.
Its length from top to tail is 22mm (0.86in).
The female is far bigger at around 29mm, the institute said, adding that other specimens were yet to be located, despite “great effort”.
“The new chameleon is only known from a degraded montane rainforest in northern Madagascar and might be threatened by extinction,” said the Scientific Reports journal.
Oliver Hawlitschek, a scientist at the Center of Natural History in Hamburg, said: “The nano-chameleon’s habitat has unfortunately been subject to deforestation, but the area was placed under protection recently, so the species will survive.”
Researchers found that it hunts for mites on the rainforest floor and hides from predators at night in blades of grass.
In a blog post, Dr Mark Scherz, one of the researchers involved in the discovery, called it “a spectacular case of extreme miniaturisation”.
The forests where the Brookesia were located are still well connected with others across the north of the island, he said.
“So this tiny new chameleon violates the pattern of the smallest species being found on small islands. That suggests that something else is allowing/causing these chameleons to miniaturise,” he added.
In their report, scientists recommended that the chameleon be listed as critically endangered in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species to help protect it and its habitat.
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State chapter, on Friday passed a “vote of no confidence” on the Rector of the institution, Dr. John Adekolawole, who has been indicted for alleged corruption, maladministration and sexual misconduct.
The ASUP members, who addressed journalists at the end of its monthly Congress in Ede, demanded the removal of the rector and vowed not to resume academic activities until their demands are met by Federal Government.
Lecturers at the polytechnic have been on strike for weeks.
They also urged the federal government to set up a visitation panel to investigate all the allegations against Adekolawole and appoint an acting rector to run the affairs of the polytechnic.
The ASUP national leadership had in December last year also passed a vote of no-confidence on the embattled rector and asked the federal government to suspend him over the allegations.
In a letter to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, and signed by ASUP President, Anderson Ezeibe, the union called for Adekolawole’s suspension to avoid anarchy at the polytechnic.
The union noted that the rector had previously been suspended by the polytechnic for two months for alleged sexual harassment.
The letter read:
“The Rector had continued in defiance of the resolutions of the meeting which found him culpable of the allegations of mounting an illegal programme thereby defrauding unsuspecting members of the public over the years, acts of plagiarism, turning the Polytechnic into his family affair through indiscriminate and undeserving promotions and posting of members of his immediate family into sensitive positions in the Institution, victimization of staff and proven cases of fraudulent transactions in the polytechnic.”

Though 70 per cent of cancer patients need radiotherapy treatment, only three centres are functional in the country…
Nigerians suffering from cancer have lamented the high cost of treatment and dearth of treatment facilities and specialists.
The patients and medical experts, who spoke ahead of this year’s World Cancer Day called on governments at the federal and state levels to subsidise treatment and save lives.
February 4 is marked as World Cancer Day and this year’s event is themed “I am and I will”.
Medical practitioners who spoke to Daily Trust revealed that there are no more than three functional radiotherapy centres for cancer treatment in Nigeria.
A cancer patient
The Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Abuja, Dr Jafaru Momoh, said aside from the hospital he heads, which has two linac radiotherapy machines, only the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), which is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) has two of the machines.
Speaking about these challenges, an Oncology Consultant at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Dr Muhammad Inuwa Mustapha, identified lack of radiotherapy machine as a monumental concern that requires urgent attention from both the federal and state government.
He said 70 per cent of cancer patients need radiotherapy treatment adding, “In Kano, we don’t have a single radiotherapy machine. In the whole country, we have only three centres with functional radiotherapy machines and they are in Abuja, Lagos and Enugu.
“Based on the International Atomic Energy Management Agency recommendation, any community that has 250, 000 people is supposed to have a machine. So, if you look at Kano, based on our population we are supposed to have not less than 20 radiotherapy machines and we have none. With over 200 million people, we have only three functional machines for the whole country and this is terrible,” he said.
He, therefore, appealed to the government to put up a radiotherapy machine in each state so as to address the major concern of cancer patients.
Other public hospitals do not have radiotherapy machines or the ones they have are obsolete.
According to the Nigeria National Cancer Prevention and Control Plan (2018-2022), cancer is responsible for 72,000 deaths in the country every year with an estimated 102,000 new cases annually.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) describes cancer as a large group of diseases that can start in almost any organ or tissue of the body when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably, go beyond their usual boundaries to invade adjoining parts of the body and/or spread to other organs.
The Commissioner for Health in Benue State, Dr Joseph Ngbea, who is the current chairman of the National Cancer Committee of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), said the cause of most cancers is not known but added that there are risk factors.
These include age, genetics and family history, geographical factors (some cancers are related to excessive exposure to sunlight) and environmental factors like what people eat, viruses and infections among others.
Experts say cancer can be treated by surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormonal manipulation and targeted therapy; but the facilities available for the treatment are in short supply.
The President of the Nigeria Cancer Society, Dr Adamu Alhassan Umar, said the commonest cancers in Nigeria are breast cancer, cervical cancer (which affect women) and prostate cancer which affect men.
Dr Umar, who is also a public health physician, said other cancers that affect Nigerians, are colorectal cancer, which affects the intestinal tract, lymphomas, bladder, lung, and skin cancers, among others.
He said the state of cancer care remains poor in Nigeria because of lack of political will on the part of leaders, poor funding and expensive treatment, which is beyond the reach of the poor.
He said the federal government’s pledge under the former Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, to establish a cancer treatment centre in each geopolitical zone, has not been fulfilled till date.
Prof. Adewole said most hospitals in the country do not have the requisite diagnostic and treatment tools and enough qualified personnel to properly treat cancer efficiently at the early stages.
The United States has demanded “serious consequences” over reports of systematic rape and torture of women taking place inside China’s camps for the Uighur Muslim minority.
The US state department said that it was “deeply disturbed” by the “atrocities”.
China’s foreign ministry strongly denied the “false report”.
The article detailed allegations of mass rape, sexual abuse and torture with the internment camps in China’s Xinjiang region.
According to independent estimates, more than a million people have been detained in the camps, which China says exist for the “re-education” of Uighurs and other minorities.
One woman who fled Xinjiang after her release and is now in the US told the BBC that women were removed from their cells “every night” and raped by one or more masked Chinese men.
She said she was tortured and later gang-raped on three occasions, each time by two or three men.

A Kazakh woman from Xinjiang who was detained for 18 months in the camp system said she was forced to strip Uighur women naked and handcuff them, before leaving them alone with Chinese men.
A guard at one of the camps, who spoke on condition of anonymity, detailed allegations of torture.
Adrian Zenz, a leading expert on China’s policies in Xinjiang, said the testimony gathered for the BBC story “confirms the very worst of what we have heard before”.
A US state department spokesman said: “We are deeply disturbed by reports, including first-hand testimony, of systematic rape and sexual abuse against women in internment camps for ethnic Uighurs and other Muslims in Xinjiang”.
“These atrocities shock the conscience and must be met with serious consequences.”
Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne also commented on the report, saying the United Nations should be given “immediate” access to the region.
“We consider transparency to be of utmost importance and continue to urge China to allow international observers, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, to be given immediate, meaningful and unfettered access to Xinjiang at the earliest opportunity,” she said.
Human rights groups say the Chinese government has gradually stripped away the religious and other freedoms of the Uighurs, culminating in an oppressive system of mass surveillance, detention, indoctrination, and even forced sterilisation.
China has consistently denied allegations of human rights abuses in Xinjiang, and said the camps were not detention camps, but “vocational educational and training centres”.
On Wednesday, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin accused the BBC of making a “false report” that was “wholly without factual basis”.
Nigerian politician, Prince Ned Nwoko has revealed how he saved his wives from going into prostitution.
According to Nwoko, he used marriage as an avenue to save his wives from considering the sex trade.
He made this known during an interview, adding that marrying more than one wife helps the society and creates a better alternative for younger ladies.
The ex-lawmaker further explained that the average Northerner marries two, three, four women, to help the society.
He noted that it is the economic situation in the country that forced so many women to eventually go into prostitution.
You see the average Northerner marrying two, three, four women, they are helping the society because it is the economic downturn that has affected so many women who you see doing prostitution and all that…” he said.
Mariah Carey’s older sister is suing the US singer for $1.2m (£875,000) for “immense emotional distress” she says was caused by remarks in her memoir.
In her complaint, Alison Carey referred to claims in the book that she gave 12-year-old Mariah Valium, tried to pimp her out and threw boiling tea on her.
Alison denied the claims, saying Mariah “presented no evidence to substantiate these serious allegations”.
The pop star published The Meaning of Mariah Carey in September.
Alison, who was 20 at the time the alleged events took place, filed her two-page legal complaint at New York Supreme Court on Monday.
It said the “outrageous” material in Mariah’s book was meant to “humiliate and embarrass” her sister.
Mariah used “her status as a public figure to attack her penniless sister, generating sensational headlines describing her lurid claims to promote sales of her book”, Alison claimed.
She is now seeking damages for the “heartless, vicious, vindictive, despicable and totally unnecessary public humiliation”.
image captionIn December, the pop diva’s All I Want For Christmas Is You topped the UK charts for the first time
She also said she was severely depressed due to the “unspeakable trauma of her childhood and having her own children abandon her”. According to the document, Mariah had publicly acknowledged her sister, or “ex-sister”, to be a “deeply wounded” person.
The BBC has asked the singer’s representatives for a comment.
What was in the book?
Alison dropped in and out of Mariah life, through teenage pregnancy, drug dependency and suicidal thoughts, the performer wrote. Although they shared some tender moments, the singer depicted several occasions when she believes Alison put her at risk.
One story involved her sister’s boyfriend, who – Carey says she later realised – was running a prostitution ring. Aged 12, she claimed she was tricked into spending a night alone with him, ending up at a card game and a drive-in movie, where “almost immediately” he put his arm around her.
Immobilised and terrified by the “handgun resting against his thigh”, Carey said she only escaped after another car pulled up alongside them, prompting John to leave and drive home “in silence”.
The singer believes she was at risk of being pimped, reasoning: “Dysfunctional families are ideal prey for abusers, the exposed little ones vulnerable to being picked off.”
Speaking to The Sun when the book was published, Alison denied the claims and said she was shocked and appalled that Mariah would accuse her of pimping her out.
