FCTA demolishes 2,000 illegal structures in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Wednesday demolished about 2,000 illegal structures in the Mpape community.

The Chairman of the FCT Ministerial Committee on City Sanitation, Ikharo Attah, said in a statement the exercise was aimed at sanitising the community.

He added that illegal structures on the roadside were obstructing human and vehicular movement in the area.

Attah said: “Mpape demolition was requested by the residents and landlords who came to FCTA and asked the Minister of the FCT, Muhammad Bello, to come and clear the road corridors.

So, what we are doing is in line with the request of the people who want the road corridors to be reclaimed so that there will be ease of movement. As a responsible government, we responded to the cries of the people.

“The sanitation and demolition were long overdue and were targeted at the roadside shanties and other unapproved buildings causing obstruction along the road

“We gave them enough notice, but many of them were basking in the euphoria that nobody can clear Mpape.”

HIV more prevalent among unmarried men and women in Nigeria –NACA DG, Aliyu

The Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr Gambo Aliyu has disclosed that single men and women in Nigeria were the highest numbers of persons infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in the country.

However, he noted that according to a recent survey carried out by the agency, single women were more infected with HIV than men in the country

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Aliyu said while individuals who were never married contributed 64 per cent of the new infections in the country, new infections among female sex workers (FSW) and men who have sex with men (MSM) make up 91 per cent of all new infections among adults.

According to him, the younger generations who are never married do not use prevention and do not listen or want to have anything to do with HIV services.

“If we can reach them and connect them, we can come closer to reducing the pandemic. The younger people living with the virus need to be reached with services to curtail transmission among them and newborns.

“To reduce child infections due to mother-to-child transmission, we must go beyond the hospital and go to the communities to deliver services. We are working at hospitals and community levels. They now have more access. Expectant mothers who don’t go for antenatal service are now reached at the comfort of their homes,” he said.

Furthermore, Aliyu said NACA in collaboration with development partners is working tirelessly to develop strategies to stem the spread of HIV in the country.

Meanwhile, the report stated that the unmarried population, which is the youth, is the largest contributor to new infections, which is mostly between the ages of 17 to 34 for females, and 19 to 31 for men.

Also, the report stressed the need for special efforts to be made to reach the youth population in schools, workplaces, gathering spots, and especially through social media.

The report also noted that there were new infections through newborns due to low coverage of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), noting that efforts will be targeted at encouraging women to attend Antenatal Care (ANC), especially in high prevalence states.

Also, it outlined that increased efforts should be put in, especially for the highest risk FSW and MSM, which have shown that even though the population is small, noting that despite the high levels of reported condom use, prevalence remains high among sex workers and MSM.

“Although there is a law against MSM in Nigeria, the law does not deny them access to services or restrain us from delivering service to them. They can assess our HIV services across the country,” the NACA report noted.

To this end, the Mode of Transmission Study (MOT) focuses on identifying the sources of new HIV infections in the country and was first conducted in 2009 and was recently repeated, using an updated model known as the Incidence Pattern Model (IPM).

OUR MCM FOR TODAY IS LEBRON JAMES

James was born on December 30, 1984, in Akron, Ohio, to Gloria Marie James, who was 16 at the time of his birth. His father, Anthony McClelland, has an extensive criminal record and was not involved in his life. When James was growing up, life was often a struggle for the family, as they moved from apartment to apartment in the seedier neighborhoods of Akron while Gloria struggled to find steady work. Realizing that her son would be better off in a more stable family environment, Gloria allowed him to move in with the family of Frank Walker, a local youth football coach who introduced James to basketball when he was nine years old.

James began playing organized basketball in the fifth grade. He later played Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball for the Northeast Ohio Shooting Stars. The team enjoyed success on a local and national level, led by James and his friends Sian Cotton, Dru Joyce III, and Willie McGee. The group dubbed themselves the “Fab Four” and promised each other that they would attend high school together. In a move that stirred local controversy, they chose to attend St. Vincent–St. Mary High School, a private Catholic school with predominantly white students.

Standing 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 m) tall and weighing 250 pounds (113 kg), James has played the majority of his career at the small forward and power forward positions but has also been deployed at the other positions when necessary. His playing style, which is athletic and versatile, has drawn comparisons to Hall of Famers Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan. Through the 2020–21 season, James’s career averages are 27.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 7.4 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game. Since 2011, he has been ranked the best player in the NBA by ESPN and Sports

As an 18-year-old rookie, James led the Cavaliers in scoring. He holds numerous “youngest to” distinctions, including being the youngest player to score 30,000 career points. During his first stint in Cleveland, he was primarily used as an on-ball point forward, and although his shooting tendencies were perimeter-oriented, he established himself as one of the best slashers and finishers in basketball. His combination of speed, quickness, and size often created matchup problems for opposing teams because he was capable of blowing by larger defenders and overpowering smaller ones. These qualities became more apparent in transition, where he developed a reputation for grabbing defensive rebounds and then beating the defense downcourt for highlight reel baskets. Around this time, James was frequently criticized for not having a reliable jump shot or post game. Teams would try to exploit these weaknesses by giving him space in the half court and forcing him to settle for three-pointers and long two-pointers, a strategy famously used by Spurs coach Gregg Popovich in the 2007 Finals, where James converted on only 36 percent of his field goals in four games.

In Miami, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra changed James’s role to a more unconventional one. James spent more time in the post and improved his shot selection and accuracy on jump shots. He also learned how to work as an off-ball cutter in the Heat’s “pass-happy” offense. Behind these improvements, James’s overall scoring efficiency rose to historically great levels. During this time, ESPN’s Tom Haberstroh called James’s free-throw shooting his biggest weakness, describing it as “average”. Upon returning to the Cavaliers, James began to experience subtle age-related declines in productivity, posting his lowest scoring averages since his rookie season in 2015 and 2016. His shooting also temporarily regressed, and he briefly ranked as the NBA’s worst high-volume shooter from outside the paint. Despite these changes, he remained an elite offensive player who beat defenses with body control, strength, and varying attacking speeds.

For most of his career, James has controlled the offense as the primary ball handler on his team. His playmaking ability is generally considered one of his premier skills, and some analysts rank him among the greatest passers in NBA history. By exploiting his size, vision, and the attention he garners from opposing defenses, James creates easy points for his teammates with accurate assists. He executes unconventional passes, including after leaving his feet and through defensive traffic. His uncanny tendency to find the open man has helped force NBA teams to incorporate some elements of zone into their schemes to better cover the weak side of the court and prevent James from passing to open shooters. Early in James’s career, he was criticized for overpassing in pressure situations; specifically, for passing instead of shooting in the waning seconds of close games. However, as his career progressed, James’s clutch performance was viewed more favorably.

At the beginning of James’s NBA career, he was considered a poor defensive player, but he improved steadily through the years. In 2009, he became proficient at the chase-down block, which involves coming in from behind the opposition in transition to block the shot. In Miami, he developed into a more versatile defensive player, and the Heat relied on him to guard all five positions. Along with Shane Battier and Dwyane Wade, Miami used James in an ultra-aggressive defensive scheme, with James cheating off the ball to help out inside or get into rebounding position. Beginning in 2014, some analysts reported a regression in his defensive impact, stemming from a lack of effort and expected age-related declines. During his second stint in Cleveland, his defense progressively declined. After missed drives on offense, he often dawdled back on defense while complaining to the referees; he provided less help off the ball, and was less aggressive in switching. James himself admitted to taking plays off at times, referring to this approach as “chill mode”. He eventually developed a reputation for raising his defensive level in the playoffs, which some analysts referred to as “Playoff LeBron”.

TBT with Kelly Rowland @kellyrowland

Kelly Rowland was born Kelendria Trene Rowland on February 11, 1981, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Doris Rowland Garrison and Christopher Lovett.
Rowland grew up inspired by Whitney Houston and — like her idol — sang in the church choir. At 7, Rowland’s mother left her father due to domestic abuse and moved the family to Houston, Texas.
In Texas, Kelly met another budding songstress, Beyoncé Knowles. According to reports, Doris felt it was better for her daughter to live with her friend’s family, and Beyoncé’s parents, Matthew and Tina, agreed to provide legal guardianship over Kelly.

In 2002, Rowland debuted a solo album, Simply Deep, featuring a duet with rapper Nelly, called “Dilemma,” which spent two months at the top of the charts.
Rowland released a second solo album in 2007, Ms. Kelly. The album received only moderate success and, two years later, she fired manager Matthew Knowles. Her subsequent studio effort, Here I Am (2011), was released through the label Universal Motown, and garnered warm reviews by critics.
Rowland co-wrote most of the tracks for fourth studio album, Talk a Good Game (2013), which featured contributions from Wiz Khalifa and her former Destiny’s Child bandmates.
In November 2018, Rowland released her first single in years, simply titled “Kelly.” She followed in early 2019 with “Crown,” with both tracks to be included in an upcoming album.

Along with her musical work, Rowland has found her way into TV and film projects. She appeared as a judge on the U.K. and American versions of the music competition series The X Factor and nabbed a role in the 2012 ensemble feature Think Like a Man.
Following a short-lived attempt to launch new musical careers in the series Chasing Destiny, Rowland returned to judging duties on the Australian version of The Voice. In early 2019, she appeared as R&B great Gladys Knight in the BET series American Soul.

Nigeria to get 4m doses of COVID-19 vaccine from U.S

In the next few days, the US government will supply 10 million vaccines to South Africa and Nigeria.

5.6 million Pfizer doses will be going to South Africa and 4 million Moderna doses will be heading Nigeria’s way.

This was revealed by Dana L. Banks, US Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Africa at the National Security Council, at a virtual press conference for African journalists on Wednesday.

According to banks, the deliveries are part of a pledge by President Biden to share 80 million doses globally–with about 25 million doses expected to arrive in 49 African states.

We have been, over the past three weeks, working through the African Union and COVAX delivering first rounds, in some cases second rounds, of doses to our African partners. And just today, we are happy to announce that we will be sending over 5 million doses to South Africa as well as 4 million – 5 million doses – over 5 million doses to South Africa of Pfizer vaccines as well as 4 million doses of Moderna vaccine to Nigeria.

So we’re very excited about that and we hope that these will go a long way in helping to provide safety and health security for the people of Nigeria and South Africa, which will then enable them to get back to their regular activities, their economic activities, and help them to build back better,” She said.

The United States is ramping up vaccine deliveries to Africa as a third wave of the pandemic continues to accelerate across the continent.

Vaccine availability in Africa has been hampered by a factor called ‘vaccine nationalism’, which has seen wealthy nations snapping up excess doses of available vaccines for their own populations.

So far, only less than 1 percent of Nigerians have so far received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

According to Faisal Shuaib, the Executive Director National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), as of June 15, 2021, a total number of 1,978,808 targeted eligible Nigerians had partaken in vaccination against the Virus.

This represents 1.9 doses of vaccines per 100 people.

R Kelly had sexual contact with underage boy as well as girls, prosecutors say.

R.Kelly has found himself in more problems as federal prosecutors have revealed more sex trafficking allegations against the disgraced singer including that he had sexual contact with an underage boy.

Recall Kelly faces multiple charges in New York, Minnesota and Illinois, many of them related to his alleged abuse of underage girls.

In a court filing on Friday, July 23, the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York revealed it believes he also violated at least one male victim.

According to the filing, which includes new information but no new charges, Mr. Kelly met a 17-year-old boy at a McDonald’s around December 2006, and invited him to a party. When the teen showed up with his mother and stepfather, Mr Kelly allegedly asked him to come alone next time.

After that, prosecutors say he invited the boy to his studio, “under the guise of helping and mentoring John Doe #1 with his musical aspirations”.
“Kelly also asked John Doe #1 what he was willing to do to succeed in the music business and clarified that he wanted John Doe #1 to engage in sexual contact with Kelly,” the document says. “With that backdrop, Kelly then engaged in sexual contact with John Doe #1, in violation of Illinois law.”

Mr. Kelly has pleaded not guilty to the charges and denies ever abusing anyone.
Prosecutors, however, are accusing the musician of coordinating a vast criminal enterprise involving his bodyguards, managers, and other members of his entourage, all geared toward gratifying Mr Kelly’s sexual desires.

“The purposes of the Enterprise were to promote R Kelly’s music and the R Kelly brand, to recruit women and girls to engage in illegal sexual activity with Kelly and to produce pornography, including child pornography,” the US attorney’s office says.

Friday’s court filing spans 55 pages, and includes 20 “Jane Does” and two “John Does”.
Prosecutors say Mr Kelly also asked John Doe #1 to contact a juror in his 2008 child pornography trial, and to tell the juror that Mr Kelly was a “good guy”. They also allege that he tried to start a sexual relationship with a friend of John Doe #1’s, who was 16 or 17 at the time.
Mr Kelly’s New York trial is set to begin on 9 August.

How I Survived Military Jet Shot Down By Bandits – Nigerian Air Force Pilot.

Dairo stated that his escape was orchestrated through the help of Almighty God.
Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo, the Nigerian Air Force pilot, who ejected from an Alpha Jet who was shot down by bandits in Zamfara State, has given graphic details of the incident.
Dairo stated that his escape was orchestrated through the help of Almighty God.

SaharaReporters had on Monday reported that Dairo luckily escaped the Alpha Jet belonging to the Nigerian Air Force which crashed during an anti-banditry operation in Zamfara State.

The jet crashed on Sunday around 12.45pm while returning from an air interdiction mission between the boundary of Zamfara and Kaduna states.

The NAF Spokesman, Edward Gabkwet had said on Monday that the jet “came under intense enemy fire which led to its crash in Zamfara State.”

However, Dairo escaped and had been celebrated since then. In his submission, the combat pilot indicated that he had a premonition of the encounter, days before the Nigerian military assigned him on the mission.

He said, “Before Sunday I had been having dreams where I saw myself fighting and evading enemies like real-time war, day in day out, like nightmares. So when my jet got shot with the explosives and my flight controls were destroyed and I had no choice but to eject, I just said ‘God, finally, here we go.’

“As I was flanked by the bandits, I kept praying and I kept telling God to answer your prayers because I knew you were all praying for me. I love you all. And I thank God for bestowing his love on me and saving me from death several times within that period.

“I will still share my testimonies but truly, God ordered my steps, the bandits (meanwhile they are ruthless like Boko Haram, I don’t know why we still call them bandits) were more interested in capturing me than shooting me at (even at point-blank range). Eventually, they got neither.

“It’s now I’m feeling all the pains I suffered from the ejection (including a fracture in my neck and painful back and chest), but God didn’t allow those pains to slow me down for the bandits to capture me.

“NAF platforms overhead also helped to deter them a lot by making some of them to pin down while I kept running, and when they got close to me, I was still able to evade them by camouflaging (I was wearing green Federal Government suits – in the green forest) and concealing myself.

“I ran into plenty spiders and I laid down several times out of weakness not knowing if anything poisonous would sting or bite me. All glory is to God, all glory. I have not been your most righteous brother, but I felt God’s hands in everything. Even in every decision I took immediately I was shot, all the decisions worked together to save my life.

“In the village I eventually entered at night, I told God that the first person I see and call should favour me and that happened. They dropped me with their Emir who with pride and joy called the Nigerian Army men to come and meet me (they all had sleepless nights).

“NAF helicopters also came to pick me up from there. There is so much to say. All thanks to God, thank you so much, love.”

Obi Cubana: “Shame on anyone who supports what happened in Anambra and still complains about this country” – Governor Yahaya Bello’s media aide says.

The Senior Special Assistant to Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello on New Media, Atuluku Victor Levi has said that anyone who supports the display of wealth during Obi Cubana’s mother’s burial has no right to complain about Nigeria.

“Shame on anyone who supports what happened in Anambra and still complains about this country…no be for moon those guys make dem cash, na for dis same Naija!” he wrote.

“It is not about money but goodwill” , Obi Cubana speaks on how he made his money then reacts to speculations of rituals.

Obi Iyiegbu, better known as Obi Cubana, has granted an interview where he addressed how he became a successful businessman and also his mother’s talk-of-the-town burial.

The 46-year-old businessman told BBC Pidgin he and his siblings gave their mother a burial that became the talk of the town because they had promised her that her 80th birthday would be a carnival. As she died at 78, they decided to fulfil their promise by giving her the kind of burial she got as she fulfilled the role of father and mother after their father died 15 years ago.

The businessman said he studied political science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and kept looking for a job after NYSC but couldn’t find so he started doing “small small mama put” (restaurant) in Abuja where he did his youth service, after which he started a “beer parlour” at Garden, Abuja.

He said that at the time he was doing the beer parlour business, he, his brothers, and their friends were living in a one-room accommodation in Zone 4, Abuja. He said it was a tiny room, 12 by 12, and all the six occupants of the room had was a mattress on the floor which they had to manage.

He said their source of livelihood, the beer parlour, was soon demolished “through El-Rufai”.

He added he thought it was over at the time but he opened “Ibiza” which then birthed “Cubana”.

He explained that not every business he got into worked. Some failed, he said, others succeeded.

Speaking of the publicity around his mother’s burial and comments from some that he and his friends did rituals or got their money through illegal means, Obi Cubana said hard work is the only way he got his money.

He explained that what people see now is years of hardwork.

He said:

Miracle doesn’t give money because that pastor needs the money more. Native doctor cannot give you money because his children are the ones who fetch water from the stream. How can he give you what he doesn’t have? Work hard. Work hard.

As for those asking him to “cut soap” for them, he told them to work hard and be consistent.

“Cut soap” is slang used to ask a successful person to give you a bit of what they are using that makes them successful. It originates from the claims that some young fraudsters visit ritualists who give them soap to bathe with for optimal success.

Obi Cubana said: “If you are in your 20s, work now. I am 46 years. I have done my first half. I don’t know why someone who is just 20 years will say he has not made it when he still has 50 years 60 years ahead.

“There is no soap to cut for anybody, there is no soap anywhere, work, pray, be good, make your own soap.”

The Chairman of Cubana Group said the only spiritual power he believes in is prayer. He said his mother, a school teacher, was very prayerful and after she died, he felt a huge part of his energy left him.

He further stated that he believes in fasting and prayer and not rituals.

“I do pray before I leave the house. I pray because if you don’t pray your body will be naked and prone to different attacks,” he said.

As for the crowd at his mother’s burial and how money was displayed, Obi said it comes from years of friendship and goodwill.

He said: “We didn’t plan for one-fifth of the crowd at the funeral. But see what happened at the burial.

“People have been saying that Obi Cubana has money, which money? They need to know people who have money in Anambra and in Nigeria.

“It is not about money but goodwill. What happened that day, money can’t buy it. See the crowd, yet nobody was raped, no car was stolen and no one was attacked. It can only be God.”
