Court jails two undergraduate students one year for internet fraud

Justice Sikiru Oyinloye of the Kwara State High Court, Ilorin, on Wednesday sentenced two students to one year imprisonment each for internet fraud.

The convicts – Olamilekan Ezekiel Adebayo of Kwara State University (KWASU) and Ibrahim Najeeb Omotosho of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for internet fraud.

The two students pleaded guilty to their separate charge.

The EFCC counsel, Innocent Mbachie, urged the court to sentence the students based on their admittance of guilt and the evidence tendered against them.

Delivering judgment on the two cases, Justice Oyinloye said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Adebayo to one year imprisonment with an option of N100,000 fine.

He ordered that the sum of $200 which the convict raised as restitution be forfeited to the victim through the Federal Government.

The judge also ordered the forfeiture of Samsung phone recovered from the convict to the federal government.

Similarly, he sentenced Omotosho to one year imprisonment with an option of N500,000 fine.

The judge also ordered the convict to forfeit the iPhone 12 pro which he benefited from the crime to the federal government.

Man jailed four-month for internet fraud in Kaduna

Justice Hannatu A.L Balogun of Kaduna State High Court on Thursday sentenced one Nehemiah Joel to four months in prison for cybercrime.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Joel on a one-count charge of cyber fraud.

The commission told the court that the convict posed as United Arab Emirate (UAE)-based prostitute to defraud unsuspecting victims, mostly middle-aged men.

The EFCC counsel, M.E Eimonye, said Joel assumed the identity of one Chloe Adler, a white hooker to defraud his victims.

“Part of his gimmick was to request payment for his services upfront before meeting with his clients,” he said.

The convict pleaded guilty to the charge.

Following his plea, the prosecution counsel asked the court to convict the defendant accordingly.

However, the defence counsel, O.O Jeremiah, urged the court to temper justice with mercy as the defendant is a student and first-time offender who has shown remorse for his actions.

Justice Balogun sentenced Joel to four months imprisonment or an option of N60,000 fine.

Benue women protest over ‘attacks on Gov Ortom’ by Nigerian govt

Benue State women under the aegis of Concerned Benue Mothers, on Wednesday, staged a peaceful protest around the streets of Makurdi, the state capital, in solidarity with the State Governor, Samuel Ortom, who has been at loggerheads with the Federal Government.

The peaceful protest, tagged “5,000 match in support of Governor Samuel Ortom”, was led by a former House of Representatives member, Rebecca Apedzan.

The women all dressed in black, carried leaves and placards with different inscriptions, and declared their unalloyed support to Ortom in his fight to stop the killing of the state residents by armed herdsmen.

Hannatu Ullam, who read a statement on behalf of the women, said the herdsmen have been killing their children, husbands, mothers and sacked the people from their ancenstral homes.

The women called on the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, to tender an apology to the people of the state for calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in the state.

The statement reads in part: “We are all aware how our state Governor, Samuel Ortom has been consistent, raising alarm over the sustained killings of innocent Benue citizens by the Fulani herdsmen.

“These Fulani armed militia not only kill our children, husbands, mothers and sack them from their ancestral homes but also rape our daughters and mothers.

“Governor Ortom who has been in the forefront, seeking that the Federal government takes decisive action and end this grave insecurity challenge has rather come under attack by no other person but Senator George Akume, Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs.

As mothers, we are shocked that Senator Akume and his group chose the ignominious path to close their eyes against the pains visited on the people of Benue state by Fulani killer herdsmen. They rather preferred to take sides with a President that has not shown any form of concern at the attacks and killings perpetrated by his kinsmen against the law abiding people of our dear state.

“It is too early in the day for any discerning Benue son or daughter to forget President Buhari’s counsel that we should learn to live with our (killer) neighbours.

“It is surprising that Senator Akume who has benefited so much from Benue State will turn around to seek to destroy it for his selfish reasons. This is someone who was elected Governor for eight years and Senator for twelve years. Now he wants to destroy the same democratic structures that brought him into prominence.

It is sad that Akume and his cohorts seek to trample on the pride of Benue to sing praises of a president and an administration that has failed to secure the lives of Benue people. We make bold to say that Akume’s outing was shameful and smacks of subservience, just to satisfy his masters who have no regards for the lives of the people of our great state.

“We are therefore calling on Senator Akume to make haste to tender an unreserved apology to the peace-loving people of Benue and His Excellency, Governor Ortom in order to avoid the wrath of the gods of the land.

“As a former governor, he should be in the forefront speaking against the mindless shedding of blood by herdsmen and not seen to be promoting hate on our governor for speaking truth to power simply because of political differences.”

In reaction, Ortom said he remains unshaken in ensuring peace in the State.

Ortom said: “I remain committed to Benue people. Whatever you want me to do, I will do. Nobody will intimidate me. The prohibition of open grazing has come to stay. Whether you are a Christian, Muslim, Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo, you are free to operate here in Benue State as long as you operate in accordance with the law.

Nigerian govt, health workers reach agreement on dispute

The Federal Government has reached an agreement with aggrieved health workers in the country.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, disclosed this to journalists at the end of a five-hour conciliation meeting with the leadership of Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) on Tuesday in Abuja.

JOHESU had on September 3 issued a 15-day ultimatum to the federal government to meet its demands or face an indefinite strike.

Ngige said both parties reached an understanding at the meeting, adding that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be signed next week.

He said the parties discussed in a fraternal way and reached an understanding on the enhancement of hazard allowance, review of retirement age from 60 to 65 years, the arrears of the consequential adjustment of the national minimum wage and other issues in the dispute.

The minister said the government and JOHESU also reached an agreement on the upward adjustment of Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) as done with Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

Ngige said: “Based on the previous discussion, we delivered to them (JOHESU) the financial implication of what is due to them and they promised to get back to their members and report back to us.

“On the other hand, the government is meeting with the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) next week for their separate discussion on hazard allowance. Already the federal government has budgeted the sum of N37.5 billion for this.

“The issue was resolved to the satisfaction of all of us. The government is not delaying the hazard allowance as some people want the public to believe.

Since the past six months, the government has been making concerted efforts to push the new hazard allowance into effect, which we are doing now but for disagreement between NMA and JOHESU.”

Lagos govt charges Chidinma, one other with murder of Super TV CEO, Ataga

The Lagos State government has filed charges against Ms Chidinma Ojukwu and one other person, Adedapo Quadri for the murder of the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Michael Ataga.

The suspects who were brought before a Chief Magistrate court sitting in the Yaba area of Lagos were led into the courtroom around 9 am on Monday, September 6.

Ripples Nigeria reported that Ms Ojukwu, a 21-year-old student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) was arrested by the police on June 23 for allegedly killing Ataga at a short-let apartment in Lekki.

It would be recalled that Ms Ojukwu and Quadri were presented before the Chief Magistrate court on August 9 by the police to seek their remand in custody, which was granted by the magistrate.

The magistrate had ordered the two be remanded for 30 days at the first instance to allow the police to continue with its investigation of the murder case and also advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Re-appearing before the magistrate on Monday Counsel to the police, Cyril Ajiofor told Magistrate Adeola Adedayo that the police has received legal advice from DPP on the case, recommending their trial for murder, saying that the suspects would be arraigned at the High Court which has jurisdiction over such matters.

According to the DPP’s advice dated August 20, sighted by Ripples Nigeria, after careful consideration of facts available in the case file, a prima facie case of conspiracy, forgery and murder exists against, Ms Ojukwu and Quadri, while a prima facie case of stealing exists against Ms Ojukwu alone.

The DPP also established the offence of having possession of a stolen item against one Egbuchu Chioma said to be Ms Ojukwu’s elder sister, from whom the deceased’s iPhone 7 was said to have been recovered.

“After careful consideration of facts available in the case, this office is of the firm view that a prima facie case of conspiring to murder, murder, conspiracy to commit felony to wit; forgery, forgery and making documents without authority contrary to sections 233, 222, 411, 363 and 370 respectively of the Criminal Law of Lagos State exists against Ojukwu Chindinma Adaora and Adedapo Quadri.

“Facts available also establish the offence of having possession of a thing reasonably suspected to have been stolen contrary to section 329 of Criminal Law of Lagos against Egbuchu Chioma,” the advice partly read.

Ripples Nigeria also learnt that the DPP Director, Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi had gone ahead to file a charge against the three suspects at the Lagos High Court, but is yet to get a date for the hearing of the case.

Meanwhile, the DPP cleared 11 other suspects and asked that they should be released as no offence had been disclosed against them in respect to the case.

The 11 people are Ms Ojukwu’s father, Ojukwu Onoh, Babalola Disu, Olowu Ifeoluwa, Olutayo Abayomi, Nkechi Mogbo, Tony Okonye, Damilola Adekoya, Bola Adekoya, Segun Akinsanya, Oluwatoni Dada and Adams Kenneth.

Following the development, Magistrate Adedayo discharged Mr Ojukwu, Disu, Olutayo and Olowu who had earlier been arraigned by the police for obstruction of justice and failing to report a crime to the law enforcement agencies.

The Magistrate Court ordered the further remand of Chidinma and the two others to be tried and adjourned till Sept 29 to await further Information from the DPP as to the status of the case at the High Court.

“The terms of reference also include certain issues and situations you may come across, to help in bringing about normalcy to the state.

The latest instruction that we gave out is the closure of all commercial mobile charging centres in all affected local government areas because it is believed they aid bandits to acquire means of communicating.

We will continue to bring in new measures that will help in bringing about peace and there will be further regularities regarding the use of mobile phones.

“We will also take further measures with the Federal Ministry of Communications with the aim of restoring normalcy in the communities.

“We have to be decisive and firm as this is a test we must not fail.

“The locals must understand that we are taking these measures in their best interest.

“It will hurt some of them economically but it has become necessary to take these measures now to forestall worse situations if these bandits and their collaborators are allowed free access to communications and other means of livelihood.

“It is important that we realise that our number one enemies are the informants and we must tackle them and deal with them in accordance with the law.”

Former France footballer Jean-Pierre Adams dies at 73 after living for 39 years in a coma.

Former France international defender, Jean-Pierre Adams has died at the age of 73.
Adams spent the last 39 years in a coma following an anaesthesia error at Lyon Hospital as part of a routine knee operation he undertook at the age of 34 on March 17, 1982.

He was confirmed to have died on Monday morning at Nimes University Hospital.
Back in 1982, after suffering a ligament rupture injury, the former Nice and Paris Saint-Germain centre-back had routine knee surgery but an error from the anaesthetist starved his brain of oxygen and he slipped into a coma.
Adams, who had two sons to his wife, Laurent and Frédéric, had had a problem with the anesthesia and the doctor operating on his knee is reported to have been working on eight patients concurrently.

Adam’s life was turned upside down following the botched operation. He spent over half his life in a coma and throughout that time, he was supported by his incredibly loyal wife Bernadette.
Speaking last year, she told CNN: “No one ever forgets to give Jean-Pierre presents, whether it’s his birthday, Christmas or Father’s Day.”
The former France international spent the majority of his day in a modified bed. Despite his health, Bernadette continued to gift her husband with presents, including clothes and aftershave.

“We buy presents like a T-shirt or a jumper because I dress him in his bed – he changes clothes every day,” she added.
“I’ll buy things so that he can have a nice room, such as pretty sheets, or some scent. He used to wear Paco Rabanne but his favorite one stopped so now I buy Sauvage by Dior.”
‘It’s all fine, I’m in great shape,’ he reportedly said to his wide Bernadette on the morning of the operation in what proved to be his final words.
In a statement, PSG said Adams’ “joie de vivre, charisma and experience commanded respect”.

Nice said the club would pay tribute to Adams – who won 22 caps for France between 1972-1976 – before their next home game against Monaco on 19 September.
Adams also made 84 appearances for Nimes, who said they were sending their “most sincere condolences to his loved ones and his family”.

He said in Hausa, “For over three hours now, the young man has been up there insisting that he would commit suicide except his father takes a bride for him.
“Right now I can confirm that operatives from the Fire Service, the police, and Civil Defence Corps have been appealing to him to come down.

“As you may see , a man has climbed up to plead with him and from all indications, there’s hope that he is likely to comply.
“We’re told by someone who claims to be from the same neighborhood with him that he’s suffering from depression.

“He said the young man got digressed when his father died a few years ago.”
Asked whether operatives provided cushioning materials for the young man to land safely in case he falls, the narrator said there was nothing to suggest such was provided.
SaharaReporters can, however, confirm that at the time of filing this report, the young man was yet to abandon his attempt to commit suicide.
