Okada Ban: Lagos to crush seized motorcycles

The Lagos State Government, Wednesday, announced its plan to crush commercial motorcycles called Okada, seized during enforcement.

A statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, said the motorcycles will be crushed on Friday.

“Law enforcement agencies seized many motorcycles today (Wednesday),” he said.

“They will all be crushed on Friday in the presence of the media.”

A fresh ban, which took effect on Wednesday, was imposed by the government following the mob attack that led to the death of David Imoh, a sound engineer in the Lekki area of the state.

The ban was imposed across six local government areas – Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Surulere, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, and Apapa and nine local government councils areas.

It’s not the first time the government would impose the measure. In January 2020, the government banned the operation of motorcyclists in 15 local councils across the state.

PREMIUM TIMES observed that many motorcyclists popularly called Okada in many parts of Lagos complied with the ban.

Alternatives

The ban, which is the first phase, was imposed following security and safety concerns, the commissioner said.

He said the state government has rolled out alternatives to cushion the effects of the ban in many areas.

“Many small buses, under the First Mile and Last Mile Scheme, were rolled out extensively in Surulere, Gbagada, Lekki, Lagos Island, and other parts of Lagos,” the statement reads.

“A number of taxicabs under the LAGRIDE scheme were deployed in Lagos Island, Ikeja, Surulere, Lekki and other places.

“The waterways were also busy as Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) put more ferries on their routes.”

Army denies complicity in Prelate’s kidnap as youths protest

The Nigerian Army (NA), yesterday, denied allegations of complicity of its troops in the kidnap incident of the Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, His Eminence Samuel Uche, and two others in Umunneochi, Abia State, on Sunday.

The Prelate, his Chaplain, Very Rev. Abidemi Shittu and the Methodist Bishop of Owerri Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dennis Mark, were abducted along the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway in Umunneochi Local Council.

While narrating his ordeal in the hands of the kidnappers, Uche, who was released on Monday after paying N100 Million ransom, had alleged that some soldiers from the North, posted to the area, were aiding kidnappers in the region.

But reacting to the allegation in a statement he sent to The Guardian, the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. General Onyema Nwachukwu, who doubted the position of the Cleric, noted that the allegation is false.

Nwachukwu said: “While the Nigerian Army expresses concern and sympathy for the victim of this heinous crime and shares in his pains, the insinuation that troops are complicit in the kidnap incident is not premised on any findings of investigations and, therefore, unacceptable.

“This allegation, therefore, raises some pertinent questions, which are still unanswered.

“Given the spate of insecurity in the region, was the issue reported to the unit covering the area? Did the Methodist Church take the NA into confidence while negotiating the ransom with the kidnappers? The unit has received no formal complaint. More worrisome is the fact that it was alleged that the ransom was paid in less than 24 hours. Was the ransom paid to troops? These are questions that beg for answers.

MEANWHILE, youths of Umunneochi Local Council, where the abduction occurred, yesterday, staged a peaceful protest to the local council headquarters at Nkwoagu Isuochi.

They expressed worry over the recurring incidents of kidnapping, abduction and other acts of criminality within the council and neighbouring Uturu axis in Isuikwuato Local Council, where many students and staff of Abia State University Uturu have fallen victims.

Johnny Depp I’ve Got My Life Back!!! After Defamation Case Win.

Johnny Depp has a new lease on life after being awarded more than $10 million in his defamation case against Amber Heard … telling the world he’s “truly humbled” by the jury’s decision.
In a lengthy statement following his win Wednesday, Depp says, “Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed. All in the blink of an eye.”

He continues, “False, very serious and criminal allegations were levied at me via the media, which triggered an endless barrage of hateful content, although no charges were ever brought against me … And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.”

As reported, a jury found Heard’s op-ed titled, “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath” defamed the actor, and awarded him $10.35M in damages. Heard was awarded $2M in compensatory damages of her own.

Depp’s statement continues, “My decision to pursue this case, knowing very well the height of the legal hurdles that I would be facing and the inevitable, worldwide spectacle into my life, was only made after considerable thought.”

He says, “From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome. Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that.”

Depp also gives love to his fans, many of whom were outside the court, saying, “I am, and have been, overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and the colossal support and kindness from around the world. I hope that my quest to have the truth be told will have helped others, men or women, who have found themselves in my situation, and that those supporting them never give up. I also hope that the position will now return to innocent until proven guilty, both within the courts and in the media.”

Offering thanks to those involved in the case, “I wish to acknowledge the noble work of the Judge, the jurors, the court staff and the Sheriffs who have sacrificed their own time to get to this point, and to my diligent and unwavering legal team who did an extraordinary job in helping me to share the truth.”

Finally, he says, “The best is yet to come and a new chapter has finally begun. Veritas numquam perit. Truth never perishes.”

Hollywood actor, Ray Liotta to be honored in hometown of Union Township, New Jersey following his death at 67.

Late Hollywood actor, Ray Liotta will be honored in his hometown of Union Township, New Jersey following his death at 67.

The Goodfellas actor died in his sleep in the Dominican Republic, on Thursday, May 26.

The iconic actor had been shooting the film Dangerous Waters in the Dominican Republic when he passed.

Mayor Manuel Figueiredo has now revealed that plans are being made to honor the actor, who died last week at the age of 67.

Officials in Union Township are considering naming a youth baseball field in honor of his performance as Shoeless Joe Jackson in the 1989 classic Field of Dreams, TMZ reported. Figueiredo said plans would not be finalized until Liotta’s family has had time to grieve his passing.

The actor, best known for his roles in Field of Dreams and as Henry Hill in 1990’s Goodfellas, was lauded by local officials in the wake of his passing Thursday.

‘He had those two movies back to back, at the beginning of his career – that’s a good twin bill there,’ the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission’s executive director Steven Gorelick told NorthJersey.com following his passing.

Gorelick said Liotta’s death hit him with ‘the same force as when James Gandolfini died,’ referring to the late Sopranos actor who died at 51 in June of 2013. ‘Both Jersey boys through and through.’

Liotta and Gandolfini both appeared in the 2012 crime drama Killing Them Softly, and Liotta had also stepped into the Sopranos franchise with his dual roles as ‘Hollywood Dick’ Moltisanti and twin brother Salvatore ‘Sally’ Moltisanti in last year’s The Many Saints of Newark.

Gorelick noted that Liotta’s iconic sequence in Goodfellas, during the day leading up to Hill’s arrest, was filmed in the state.

‘Those scenes where he was driving around in a cocaine-fueled state, that was done in Fort Lee,’ he said.

Liotta, who was engaged to Jacy Nittolo, was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2016.
