Choosing Chelsea over Manchester United my best decision – Mikel Obi reveals

Former Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi has revealed that picking Chelsea over Manchester United during his controversial transfer in 2006 was the “best decision” of his career.

Recall that the midfielder, who retired last week at the age of 35, was the subject of a bitter dispute between the Red Devils and the Blues in 2005, before signing for the London club the following year.

Despite initially signing for the Manchester side from Norwegian club Lyn Oslo,Mikel made a U-turn and moved to London.

Mikel became one of the club’s most decorated players, winning the Champions League, Europa League, two Premier Leagues, two League Cups, and four FA Cups in an 11-year spell which ended when he left Stamford Bridge in 2017.

Speaking with BBC Sport Africa, Mikel said:

“I don’t regret any decision I made because I enjoyed everything I achieved at Chelsea – it’s the best decision I have ever made in my life.” “I signed a pre-contract for Manchester United when I was 17.

If you are a kid and you see Sir Alex Ferguson right in front of you with the contract, of course you will be tempted.”

Lesbianism was not rampant in our time – Former Super Falcons star, Stella Mbachu

Former Super Falcons star, Stella Mbachu has opened up on lesbianism in women’s football and other issues facing sports development.

Mbachu who sat for an interview with Punch, noted that lesbianism was not rampant while playing in the national women’s team.

The footballer also revealed that their coaches at the time spoke against it. She said; I can’t say if lesbianism was rampant or not during my playing days, but I can confirm that we had it at that time too.

But the coaches at that time preached against it and discouraged us from the act, telling us the act is evil and we can’t use that to play football.

Every player at that time was informed about it and the disadvantages of practicing lesbianism. That is why it was not that rampant in our time.

Also debunking claims of women footballers not making good wives, she said;

No, I don’t agree with that. We have Mercy Akide, a women’s football star and she is married. We have female footballers that are married and are good wives.

The likes of Florence Omagbemi, Nkechi Egbe are married and are good wives to their husbands. It depends on what you want, not when you marry the wrong person.

Just like every other person in marriage, when you don’t get your own person, it will give you a problem, both of you will not flow very well. But when you marry the person that you love and want to stay with, everything will work well.

Talking about racism in football, Mbachu said;

During my playing days, I never paid attention to fans’ racist chants. Honestly, it does not bother me. My concern is to go to the pitch, play according to my coach’s instructions, do my best and make sure I shine.

Racism has returned to football fully and some countries are using that opportunity to abuse players. I will advise players to ignore any form of racist comments because I don’t see racism stopping soon.

FIFA is not serious about it; they need to caution the opposing fans, players and the teams. But if the world governing body is serious about it, racism would have reduced drastically in football.

Mum of 14-year-old autistic boy whose phone was smashed by Cristiano Ronaldo demands the Man.United star is given ‘the right punishment’

The mother of an autistic boy whose phone was smashed by Cristiano Ronaldo wants the FA to give out the ‘right punishment’ to the footballer, insisting that the striker ‘can’t keep getting away’ with his ‘unacceptable behaviour’.

The Football Association charged the Manchester United star earlier this week after revealing footage showed Ronaldo slapping a phone out of 14-year-old Jacob Harding’s hand.

His mother Sarah Kelly, 37, has now urged the governing body to discipline the Portuguese forward appropriately. ‘Let’s hope he finally gets the right punishment,’ she told the Mirror.

‘He can’t keep getting away with it. His behaviour is unacceptable.’ Ronaldo’s explosive behaviour occurred during Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park in April. She continued:

‘I’m being hounded by people saying I’m dragging it up again but I didn’t know anything about it.

‘He should have been dealt with six months ago. My son talks about what happened to him every day. He still hasn’t had his phone back.’

The FA’s statement on Friday September 23 read: ‘Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 for an incident that took place after Manchester United FC’s Premier League match against Everton FC on Saturday 9 April 2022.

‘It is alleged that the forward’s conduct after the final whistle was improper and/or violent.’ A statement from United on Friday read:

‘We note the FA announcement in relation to Cristiano Ronaldo. We will be supporting the player in his response to the charge.’

Asisat Oshoala scores in Barca rout

After failing to hit target in her first game of the 2022/23 season against Granadilla Tenerife last weekend at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, Super Falcons striker, Asisat Oshoala, scored her first goal of the season in style as Barcelona Femeni demolished Villarreal 4-1 at the Ciudad Deportiva Villarreal CF Vila-real on Sunday.

Oshoala came on as a substitute in the champions’ opening day 2-0 victory over Granadilla Tenerife, but coach Jonatan Giraldez handed the Falcons star her first start of the season at Villarreal.

The former Arsenal and Liverpool forward grabbed the opportunity with both hands and rewarded the manager’s faith in her with a lovely goal to double Blaugrana’s lead.

The Catalans, who went unbeaten in the Primera División Femenina last season, showed their superiority from the kickoff, and they were rewarded with a goal from Mapi Leon in the 26th minute.

Despite several chances created, Barcelona could not find the back of the net to double their lead and the Spanish champions went into the dressing room at the end of the first half with only a goal separating both sides.

The Catalans, however, started the second half better with more attacking intent and were rewarded for their efforts.Just three minutes into the restart, Oshoala scored her first goal of the season and Barca’s second of the game.

A Mariona Caldentey nice through pass put the Nigerian through on goal and she wasted no time, as she chipped the ball from outside the box past the charging Villarreal keeper to make it 2-0 for Barcelona.

Rocco Garcia pulled one back for the home side in the 56th minute to give her side a fighting chance.

Nonetheless, Barcelona fired back with goals from Claudia Pina and Lara Mata(own goal) to ensure a 4-1 win for the defending champions.

The win takes Barcelona to the summit of the Liga Femini, albeit on goal difference

Victor Osimhen’s return date from injury confirmed

Super Eagles and Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen’s return date from injury has been confirmed.

According to Italian publication, Tuttonapoli, Serie A league leaders, Napoli, have been handed a major boost after reports emerged that Nigeria international, Victor Osimhen, would be available for the club’s next UEFA Champions League game against Ajax on Oct 4.

The Super Eagles striker sustained a hamstring injury in Napoli’s 4-1 win against Liverpool in their Group A opening game of the Champions League Sept 7, before he was replaced just four minutes to the end of the first 45 minutes.

The initial report suggested that the 23-year-old would be out for three weeks. But Tuttonapoli has claimed Osimhen is likely to return in time for Luciano Spalletti’s side’s encounter against the Dutch champions.

“Victor Osimhen could see himself on the pitch for the Champions League match against Ajax,” the website wrote.

Chelsea sack senior executive less than a month after he was appointed amid claims s*xual harassment

Chelsea have sacked their commercial director less than a month after employing him after it emerged that he had sent ‘inappropriate messages’ before he joined the club.

The club confirmed that they had terminated the contract of Damian Willoughby ‘with immediate effect’ after they were made aware of the content of the messages.

Willoughby was in his second spell at Stamford Bridge. He took a key role, with Chelsea’s new US owners looking to maximise off-the-field revenue.

However, Willoughby has now departed after less than four weeks with the club. A Chelsea statement read:

‘Chelsea Football Club confirms that it has terminated commercial director Damian Willoughby’s employment with immediate effect.

‘Evidence of inappropriate messages sent by Mr. Willoughby, prior to his appointment at Chelsea FC earlier this month, has recently been provided to and investigated by the club.

‘While they were sent prior to his employment at the club, such behaviour runs absolutely counter to the workplace environment and corporate culture being established by the club’s new ownership.

‘The club’s owners are working tirelessly to set and achieve the highest standards both on and off the pitch, and are determined to establish and nurture a culture of transparency, accountability, inclusivity, diversity and opportunity.

‘The club is committed to creating an environment which embodies these values.’Kim is said to have made a complaint to the Blues president of business Tom Glick, who hired Willoughby, to claim that she had been s*xually harassed before his employment by the club and alleges she felt threatened over the telephone, Mail Online reports.

Kim held talks with Glick, who became the first appointment of the new Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital owners in July, on behalf of overseas investors who want to pump hundreds of millions of pounds into the club’s mens’, womens’ and academy teams.

Kim provided Glick with a series of messages that were sent last year by Willoughby in which he asked her if she was n@ked, brought up the subject of having s*x, posted an alleged sexually explicit video and suggested he would arrange a meeting with City chief executive Ferran Soriano if she was willing to be ‘naughty’, according to Telegraph Sport.

The messages are said to have become angry after Kim rejected a proposal from Willoughby to help fund a bid to buy Chelsea that was expected to rival the bid of Todd Boehly and Clearlake.

Kim raised her concerns with Glick over the involvement of Willoughby after that first meeting, initially surrounding his attempt to raise investment as part of a bid to buy Chelsea.

The Telegraph report believes she alleges this prompted an angry phone call from Willoughby. Kim then forwarded Glick eight screenshots of messages of a s*xual nature, including the alleged s*xually explicit video, on September 3 – two days before Willoughby’s official start date at Chelsea.

She then made a complaint after Willoughby started working for Chelsea and talks have since stalled over her proposed investment project.

The 26-year-old Nigerian has been one of the most impressive players of the opening seven games of the Premier League season shining in a central midfield position for Everton.

He ensured a dramatic 99th-minute winner over Newcastle United in March and then played a vital role in the final stages of the relegation battle while operating as a right wing back.

Iwobi also created Neal Maupay’s winner against West Ham United on Sunday.Everton is also in discussion with Jordan Pickford and Anthony Gordon over new contracts, as reported by the ECHO.

Ronaldo still holds the bragging right for more appearances when it comes to international football.

Nigerian football league is on its deathbed – Sunday Dare

Minister of youth and sports development, Sunday Dare has described the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) as a league on its deathbed.

Speaking at the ministerial briefing at the presidential villa, Abuja, on Thursday September 15, Dare noted that the league is currently in a state of disarray, with coaches, players and referees owed salaries and allowances.

He also said they’ve made efforts to speak to those in-charge but never got any response. Dare said;

“Between May and August, we did not issue a directive because we wanted the Premier League to complete its season without any disruption.

But also, during that period, the ministry made efforts to speak with those in charge. We never got any response.“As we sit here, our league is on its deathbed. We know the nature of our domestic league. And just yesterday (Wednesday) I got a letter from the club owners. I met with them two weeks ago. I also met with the female football leaders.

There’s a letter that came on September 1, I only got it yesterday stating clearly that they have numerous problems with the LMC running the league. Unpaid emoluments, referees are not paid, coaches are not paid.

“So, in May 2022, there was a presidential directive and as a ministry, we applied reasonable judgment and delayed that communication.

But at a point when the league ended, and we saw the continuous decline of our football, we thought it was the right time to take the necessary action. And that was what we did.

There’s no connection between that decision with the NFF election, it stands alone.” Dare also revealed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has received over N15 billion from the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Super Eagles and Real Sociedad striker, Umar Sadiq, has been ruled out for the rest of the season after sustaining an ACL injury against Getafe on Sunday, September 11.

Manchester United players convinced Cristiano Ronaldo is already plotting January move away from Old Trafford

Manchester United players still expect Cristiano Ronaldo to push for a move away in January.

Back in July, Ronaldo told the Premier League club that he wanted to leave after they missed out on Champions League football last season, but his request was rejected and he ended up staying at the club.

Despite scoring 24 goals last season, Ronaldo has started just one league match this term – United’s humiliating 4-0 defeat against Brentford with Erik ten Hag preferring Marcus Rashford up front instead.

However, it has been reported that United’s first-team stars think the Portuguese icon will have his sights set on an exit at the start of 2023 due to struggling to adapt to ten Hag’s style of play ‘All the players loved it when Ronaldo came back to United last season but they are frustrated he missed pre-season,’ a source told The Sun.

‘The manager put a lot of work into giving the squad detailed information about what he wanted them to do and how he wanted them to play.

‘Ronaldo is not up to speed with that and is relying on instinct when he plays. But that doesn’t work in Ten Hag’s system.

‘He often demands the ball too early in build-up play and drops deep for the ball, but that means when the ball is wide there is no-one in the middle to hit it into.

‘It’s clear that the success they have had this season is from following tactical instruction rather than the individual brilliance they relied on last season.

‘Ronaldo is likely to find himself on the bench again going forward.’

Premier League and the FA cancel all football this weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth II

The Premier League and the Football Association have postponed all matches this weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) held a call with all major sports at 9.30am to determine the plan of action for the rest of this weekend’s calendar and left the decision over events up to the individual organisations.

However, the Premier League and EFL released a statement saying they had made the decision to postpone this weekend’s fixtures to honour Queen Elizabeth’s ‘extraordinary life and contribution to the nation’.

The Premier League released the following statement: ‘At a meeting, this morning [Friday], Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

‘To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.’

Richard Masters, Premier League Chief Executive, added: ‘We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.

‘As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.

‘This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.’

According to the Daily Telegraph, there are now concerns about football taking place next week with police set to be redeployed to the Queen’s funeral in London.

Chelsea confirm Graham Potter as new manager on a five-year deal to replace the sacked Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Graham Potter as their new head coach. Potter has signed a five-year deal and will take charge of Saturday’s trip to Fulham after agreeing to succeed Thomas Tuchel.

‘I am incredibly proud and excited to represent Chelsea FC, this fantastic football club,’ Potter said.

‘I am very excited to partner with Chelsea’s new ownership group and look forward to meeting and working with the exciting group of players and to develop a team and culture that our amazing fans can be proud of.

‘I would also like to place my sincere thanks to Brighton & Hove Albion for allowing me this opportunity and in particular Tony Bloom and all the players, staff and supporters for their continued support during my time at the club.

Chelsea to approach Brighton’s Graham Potter

Chelsea have been reportedly given permission to talk to the current head coach of Brighton & Hove Albion, Graham Potter, about becoming the new head coach of the club.

It was gathered that Potter had been reassured that if he were to take the Chelsea job, he would be permitted to try to bring the ethos and football structure that both he and the club desired.

Having turned down the chance to talk to other top clubs in recent years, Potter holds that Chelsea offers him the best opportunity to proceed with his coaching career at a world-class club.

Chelsea on Wednesday sacked Thomas Tuchel. This was coming barely 24 hours after the Blues suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat in Tuesday’s Champions League opening match.

This was revealed in a statement issued by the club on its website. The Premier League team said Chelsea’s coaching staff would take charge of the team for training and the preparation for upcoming matches.
