Sport Court fine Bayern €115,600 for unsportsmanlike fan behaviour

The sports court of the German Football Federation (DFB) has imposed a fine of €115,600 ($126,810) on Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich for unsportsmanlike conduct by their fans in a league match.

Up to €38,500 can be used for investments in security or infrastructural measures, the DFB said on Monday.

Bayern fans fired at least 104 pyrotechnic objects during and after the Bundesliga game at VfB Stuttgart on March 4.

In addition, they fired two rockets onto the pitch, interrupting the match for one minute, the DFB said.

Man City strike £30 million deal to sign Kovacic from Chelsea

Manchester City have agreed a £30 million ($38.1 million) deal with Chelsea FC to sign midfielder Mateo Kovacic, the PA news agency understands.

The treble winners are set to pay an initial £25 million for the 29-year-old Croatia international, with a further £5 million to follow in potential add-ons.

Kovacic, who joined Chelsea from Real Madrid in 2018, is entering the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

City will now look to complete the formalities of a move with the player.Kovacic will become City’s first signing of the close season and gives manager Pep Guardiola more midfield options at a time when Captain Ilkay Gündogan’s future is uncertain.

Gündogan’s contract expires at the end of this month and the Germany international has not yet agreed new terms.

Kovacic, who won the Champions League three times with Real and once with Chelsea, could be one of several departures from the London club as new manager Mauricio Pochettino trims his squad.

Fellow midfielder N’Golo Kanté has already left for Saudi Arabia.

Footballer Daniel Alves faces 12 years in prison for sexual assault

Brazilian footballer, Dani Alves, may face up to 12 years in prison for an alleged sexual assault at a Barcelona nightclub, with his trial set for between October and November 2023.

The 40-year-old has been detained since January 23, 2023, after a 23-year-old woman accused him of sexually assaulting her in a toilet at the renowned Sutton Club.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player has had many pleas to be freed on remand denied, as the Barcelona high court’s judges rejected the most recent appeal.

According to Marca, there are worries that if Alves were released, he may leave the nation and return to his native Brazil, which doesn’t extradite its residents.

A new article from El Periodico stated that a trial date has already been set for Alves’ case, although the exact time has not yet been verified.

Alves could receive a sentence of six to twelve years if found guilty due to the Law on the Guarantee of Sexual Freedom, which took effect in October.

In a TV interview before his arrest, Alves said he had never met his accuser.

He later revised his account after being detained, asserting that there was no assault and that there had been an agreement.

Egypt beat Guinea to qualify for AFCON 2023

Egypt on Wednesday qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 2-1 victory over Guinea in Marrakesh.

Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet’ Ahmed was the man of the match after scoring and providing an assist for the Egyptians.

Serhou Guirassy had given the Guineans a 26th-minute lead, but Trezeguet equalised for Egypt just before the break and then set up Mostafa Mohamed for the winner 11 minutes to time.

The victory saw Egypt move to 12 points after five rounds of matches and have an unassailable lead of nine points to the third-placed team with one round of qualification matches left to play.

Guinea remain second with nine points and will only need a draw in the final qualification match in September to earn a ticket to the final tournament.

Playing with the need to win to assure themselves of a qualification ticket, Guinea started well and were rewarded after 26 minutes when Guirassy tapped home from close range off a well-worked team move.

Issiaga Sylla had made a brilliant run on the left, and once the ball was rolled to his path, he slashed a low cross that was met by the waiting feet of Guirassy, with the keeper well beaten.

Guinea were rewarded for their industrious start and dominated possession, with Egypt struggling to find their feet in the duel.

But, the Pharaohs battled to draw level four minutes to the break. This was when Trezeguet fired home from the outside of his boot from inside the box after being picked out by a sleek through ball from Mohamed Salah.

With an all-square scoreline at the break, the second half would always see a rise in tempo.

Guinea once again had the first knock on the door, this time Naby Keita trying his luck with a shot from a Francois Kamano cross, but it rolled well into the keeper’s arms.

Youngster Illaix Moriba also had a chance with a shot from the edge of the box, but it flew over.

Egypt slowly crawled back into the duel and stepped up the tempo further.

Guinea keeper Ibrahim Kone made a brilliant save in the 70th minute to deny Trezeguet’s deflected shot.

But, the Pharaohs got their winner 11 minutes to time when Mostafa fired from inside the box after a delightful cutback from Trezeguet, finding him unmarked.

Guinea tried to push for an equalizer which would have been enough to hand them a qualification ticket, but Egypt guarded their single-goal advantage well.

Al Nassr star, Cristiano Ronaldo was however not included in the team despite his star power and 14 goals in 19 appearances since joining the club in January after an acrimonious exit from Manchester United.

Liverpool sign Mac Allister from Brighton for cut price £35m

Liverpool have reportedly activated the transfer clause in the contract of Alexis Mac Allister at Brighton, the final step in the signing of the Argentine midfielder.

James Milner, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Arthur Melo have left the Merseyside club at the end of their contracts.

The Reds are expected to sign at least three midfielders to revamp the department. And it is not a surprise that Jurgen Klopp looked to sign Mac Allister, one of the best midfielders in the premier league in the just concluded season.

The 24-year-old has already passed a medical examination, the report adds.

Mac Allister’s pay will increase from £50,000 to £150,000 per week.

A five-year agreement that lasts through 2028 will be signed. Transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Reds secured the services of the Argentine for just £35 million which has been termed as a ‘steal’ by numerous sports publications.

“The Reds have triggered the clause to sign the midfielder. The final documents are currently in the process of being signed

Manchester City overtake Real Madrid as the world’s most valuable football club ‘brands’

Treble-chasing Manchester City have surpassed Real Madrid as football’s most valuable brand in the world.

The Premier League club will see its brand value soar 15 percent this year to £1.29billion by adding the Champions League to their Premier League title and FA Cup win if they beat Inter Milan this Saturday.

That saw them overtake reigning European champions Real Madrid, whose brand value dropped three percent to £1.26bn, according to an analysis by Brand Finance.

However, Brand Finance said Real remained the strongest brand in world football and were most likely to be considered ‘the best club in the world’ by fans.

Barcelona came third in the ranking, with a five percent increase in brand value to £1.185bn, with Manchester United leaping ahead of rivals Liverpool into fourth spot.

United is worth £1.174bn (up 11 per cent) and Liverpool £1.173bn (up nine per cent).

United’s successful season under Erik ten Hag had ‘reconnected the team with the fans and laid the foundations for a renewed bid for future success,’ the report said.

Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich occupied sixth and seventh spots before three Premier League clubs – Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea – closed out the top 10.

Arsenal’s brand value had risen 16 per cent to £782million following their strong challenge for the Premier League title.

Chelsea’s had risen by two per cent to £742m off the back of a disappointing campaign and lower half finish, making them only the sixth-highest English club. Spurs’ value rose five per cent to £774m.

Brand Finance said fellow London clubs Brentford and Fulham were new entries into their top 50 chart, at 43rd and 49th positions respectively.

Newcastle United were reported to have the fastest-growing brand value of any United Kingdom club following an increase of 33 per cent to £216m in the wake of their Saudi takeover in 2021.

Hugo Hensley, Head of Sports Services at Brand Finance, said: ‘Manchester City has achieved an extraordinary feat by surpassing Real Madrid to become the champion of football club brands.

For five years, the City team has exerted its dominance in English football, securing four Premier League titles in the past five seasons.

‘However, the club’s performance in this year’s ranking highlights that Manchester City are performing off the pitch in terms of building a strong brand and attracting fans and sponsors, and setting the stage for what could be an iconic Champions League final against Inter Milan.’

Governor Sanwo-Olu names Bukayo Saka favourite Arsenal player

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state on Saturday described Arsenal’s Busayo Saka as his favourite player in the English Premier League side.

Mr Sanwo-Olu, who met with Saka at the Lagos House, Marina, expressed on his Facebook page excitement at receiving his own signed Saka jersey.

“Exciting day at the State House, Marina today as I had the pleasure of hosting my favourite Arsenal player, star boy Bukayo Saka, @BukayoSaka87.

“I also enjoyed receiving my own signed Saka jersey. As a proud #Gunner, I am incredibly proud of their inspiring run in the Premier League with such a young team.

“Their determination has motivated many and showed us the power of youth. We are committed to bringing that same spirit to grassroots football in Lagos State.

“Together, let us create opportunities for our talented young players. Thank you for visiting me Bukayo and I look forward to next season,’’ he wrote.

The Arsenal forward, Saka earlier visited Egbeda area of Lagos State, the area of residence of his parents.

PSG confirm Lionel Messi is leaving the club at the end of this week

French giants, Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed that Lionel Messi will leave the club at the end of this season, with the Argentine set to play his final game against Clermont Foot on Saturday, June 3.

PSG manager Christophe Galtier confirmed in a press conference on Thursday afternoon, June 1, that the World Cup winner will depart, with Inter Miami one of many potential destinations. ‘Clermont Foot will be Messi’s final game at PSG,’ said Galtier. ‘I had the privilege of coaching the best player in the history of football. It will be Leo’s last match at the Parc des Princes.’ Messi joined PSG in 2021 and has won two Ligue 1 titles.

The 35-year-old hinted that leaving Barcelona allowed him to mature as a player and some suggest that leaving his comfort zone allowed him to develop the leadership qualities he displayed in winning the Qatar World Cup in December.

French media reported this morning that Messi could make a sensational return to the Camp Nou but that Barcelona would struggle to financially wager a move.

One alternative suggested by L’Equipe, though, is that Messi could join Inter Miami and be loaned to the Catalan club. Inter Miami, managed by Phil Neville, are said to be offering Messi a lucrative package, while there is still interest from Asian clubs.‘I hope that he will be welcomed in the best way,’ added Galtier ahead of Messi’s final game.

PSG have already won the Ligue 1 title. There have also been suggestions that the World Cup winner could be on the verge of signing a lucrative deal with Saudi side Al-Hilal.

Rumours last month claimed that Messi had been offered a contract worth £522million from Al-Hilal, despite the concerns of his wife Antonela Roccuzzo. Messi’s father, Jorge, quickly shut down reports that a decision had been made about his son’s club for next season.

Taking to social media, Messi’s father said:

There is absolutely nothing with any club for next year. The decision will never be made before Lionel finished the league with PSG. Once the season is over it will be time to analyze and see what is there, and then make a decision.

There are always rumors and many use the name of Lionel to gain notoriety but the truth is only one and we can assure that there is nothing with anyone.

Neither verbal, nor signed, nor agreed, and there will not be until the end of the season.’

During his impressive campaign in France, Messi scored 16 goals and recorded 16 assists in the league.

Manchester United set to pay Harry Maguire £10million to leave the club

Manchester United are set to pay Harry Maguire £10million pay-off to leave the club this summer.

Saturday’s FA Cup final is likely to be Maguire’s last game as a United player with the 30-year-old captain set for a place on the bench against Manchester City at Wembley.

Manchester United paid £80m for Maguire to sign him from Leicester in 2019, but he is now valued at closer to £30m due to his age and the fact he is two-thirds of the way through a six-year contract.

Maguire has another two years left on the £190,000-a-week deal, and it’s anticipated that he would earn only half that amount at a new club – leaving United to foot a £10m wage bill to get him off their books.

England manager Gareth Southgate warned last week that Maguire’s lack of first-team football at United cannot ‘continue forever’ if he wants to hold down an international place.

And Ten Hag spoke about the player’s predicament on Monday, admitting ‘that no-one would be happy with this situation – he is not as well’.

The United boss says it’s up to Maguire to make a decision about his future, and club sources echoed those comments on Wednesday night.

Maguire is one of a number of players facing an uncertain future at United after the Cup Final with question marks hanging over Anthony Martial, Fred, Scott McTominay, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Flying Eagles defeat hosts Argentina to advance at FIFA Under-20 World Cup

Nigeria eliminated host nation Argentina as goals from Ibrahim Muhammad and Rilwanu Haliru Sarki sent the six-time champions out of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup on Wednesday.

On an incredible night in western Argentina, the Flying Eagles pulled out every trick in the book to defend in numbers and then score two goals through quick counter-attacks.

The performance in this round of 16 match had the Albiceleste Sub-20, who had won all their three matches in the group phase, stunned as they crashed out of the tournament.

Nigeria Head Coach Ladan Bosso had promised that his boys would give as much as they got, and they did that and more with clear intent from the ninth minute.

That was when a snapshot by Ibrahim Muhammad on the edge of the penalty box went narrowly off.

There were even exchanges afterwards, and the South Americans came close with a header in the 39th minute.

But the Flying Eagles returned with more stamina and guile in the second half and completely dominated the hosts in front of nearly 30,000 fans in San Juan.

Goalkeeper Chijioke Aniagboso had saved from Barco in the 51st minute and Jude Sunday’s shot was held by the opposition goalie.

Thereafter the two-time silver medallists struck the underside of the bar with an intelligent shot from the edge of the box by Tochukwu Nnadi in the 58th minute.

The hosts did escape there but would not be that lucky three minutes later when from a long Aniagboso ball out, substitute Emmanuel Umeh found an onrushing Muhammad.

He stretched beyond the attention of two defenders and pushed the ball beyond the advancing goalkeeper into the net.

Two minutes later, Umeh could have turned goalscorer when he ran powerfully down the left and planted himself in a good position but dragged his shot a little too wide.

Carboni saw his shot held by the calm Aniagboso and then headed wide before Umeh again came close, only to be foiled with the goalkeeper beaten.

The nifty Romero hit the upright with a deceptive shot in the 83rd minute.

Also, Abel Ogwuche cleared the ball as two Argentines were set to pull the trigger in the 85th minute, with things becoming really anxious.

The hosts, who are under the tutelage of the legendary Javier Mascherano, poured forward in search of the equaliser and were then open to a sucker punch.

AC Milan’s Victor Eletu showed tenacity to hold on to another long Aniagboso ball out of defence.

He then lifted for Haliru Sarki to nod into the net with aplomb for Nigeria’s second with one minute into added time.

The victory somewhat atoned for Argentina’s 2-1 defeat of Nigeria in the final of the 2005 edition of the competition in The Netherlands.

That was when Lionel Messi scored twice from the penalty kick spot to deny the African champions.

Victory took the Flying Eagles to the quarter-finals, where they meet the winners of the Ecuador-South Korea round of 16 duels to be decided on Thursday.

Nigerian-born Arsenal, England football star Bukayo Saka visits Nigeria

Nigerian-born Arsenal and England international star Bukayo Saka is in Nigeria following the conclusion of the 2022/23 Premier League season.

The 21-year-old could be seen arriving at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Wednesday alongside popular UK-based Arsenal fan Kelechi Anyikude.

Although Saka was born to Nigerian parents in Ealing, England, which made him eligible to represent Nigeria’s national team, the winger opted to represent England’s Three Lions instead in international football.

In 2020, speaking to Sky Sports shortly “on the tough“ decision after he pitched his tent with England, the then 18-year-old said, “It’s a tough choice.”

But he added, “I’m happy to have represented England at youth level, but I’m also proud of my Nigerian heritage from my parents. We haven’t been picked by any team, so it’s about staying humble, and when the time comes, we’ll make the decision.”

Saka has made 26 appearances for the England national team, including the 2020 European Championship, where Three Lions reached the final but lost to Italy, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

He has scored six times for the Three Lions. In the just-concluded season, Saka played an integral part in Arsenal’s return to Champions League football after they last featured in the elite competition during the 2016/17 season.

He scored 14 league goals and made 11 assists to help the Gunners finish second.

Chelsea confirm Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager

Mauricio Pochettino has been confirmed as Chelsea’s new permanent head coach. Chelsea announced Pochettino’s appointment with the Argentinian signing an initial two-year deal that also includes a club option of an additional one year.

Pochettino will bring with him his trusted backroom team members, Jesus Perez, Miguel d’Agostino, goalkeeper coach Toni Jimenez plus son and fitness coach Sebastiano Pochettino.

The club announced his arrival in a Twitter post.

In a statement, the club said:

‘Mauricio’s experience, standards of excellence, leadership qualities and character will serve Chelsea Football Club well as we move forward.

‘He is a winning coach, who has worked at the highest levels, in multiple leagues and languages. His ethos, tactical approach and commitment to development all made him the exceptional candidate.’

Club co-owners Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, Jose E. Feliciano, Mark Walter and Hansjorg Wyss added in a joint statement:

The sporting team conducted a diligent and thoughtful process that the Board is proud of. ‘We are delighted that Mauricio will be joining Chelsea. Mauricio is a world-class coach with an outstanding track record. We are all looking forward to having him on board.’ The Argentine – who has been out of work since being sacked by PSG last summer – emerged as the frontrunner for the job after Julian Nagelsmann dropped out of the running and has impressed owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali. He will become their fourth manager since they took control of the club.

Ex-Barcelona defender, Douglas Pereira arrested after firing an unauthorised gun into the air in a car park

Former Barcelona right-back, Douglas Pereira has been arrested after shooting a gun into the air in a car park in Brazil.

Brazilian publication Globo Esporte reported that the 32-year-old is facing trial after the incident which allegedly took place on April 21 in the country’s capital of Brasilia.

It is claimed that the former Brazil U20 international had been drinking on a boat at Lake Paranoa which he left after falling out with the other people on it.

According to Football Espana, Douglas then walked through a forested area with an unauthorised gun and came to the sports campus of Club Esportives Sul.

Security at the facility are said to have asked him to leave the area after he confronted several people ‘aggressively’ – before he fired the gun into the air in a car park.

The player is then said to have hid the pistol in a nearby bush and was arrested by police – though the gun was not located. Douglas was reportedly detained and released on April 23 ahead of facing trial in Brazil.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office for Criminal Justice filed a complaint against Douglas for illegally carrying and firing a firearm.

He joined Barcelona in 2014 from Sao Paulo for a fee worth around £3.4m plus add-ons.

However, during his five years at the club, he made just eight appearances and was sent out on loan to Sporting Gijon, Benfica, and Sivasspor.

He then joined Besiktas, where he only made seven appearances, and has been without a club since he left the Turkish side last year.

Nigeria loses Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze to England

Super Eagles target Eberechi Eze has been handed a national team call-up by England manager Gareth Southgate ahead of Three Lions Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, ending speculation about the Crystal Palace player’s international career.

But his 10 goals and four assists in the Premier League for Crystal Palace this season earned him a place in the squad.

The 24-year-old was born in England to Nigerian parents.

The Nigerian Football Federation had previously tried to get the midfielder to switch allegiance to Nigeria so he could play for the Super Eagles. If he makes his competitive debut in any of the forthcoming matches, he will no longer be able to play for Nigeria.

But his 10 goals and four assists in the Premier League for Crystal Palace this season earned a place in the Three Lions squad this time.

In the list released by Southgate on Wednesday, Eze was named alongside 24 other players, including Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka.

Eze joined a growing list of players (Saka, Dele Alli, Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori, Gabby Agbonlahor, etc.) that have chosen to represent England at the international football level over Nigeria.

On June 16, England play Malta in Ta’ Qali before taking on North Macedonia three days later at Old Trafford.

The Three Lions top the early Group C table after beating Italy and Ukraine in their opening two qualifying matches in March.

Meanwhile, last week, both England and Nigeria were on the losing end as Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun, born to Nigeria parents in the United States but grew up in England, ditched the two countries to pledge his allegiance to the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT).

The 21-year-old, currently playing for French Ligue 1 side Reim, has been impressive for his club this season, with 20 goals and two assists in 35 matches as he continues his development away from Emirates.

Manchester City launch legal fight against Premier League’s 115 charges for rule breaches

Manchester City have reportedly lodged legal challenges against the Premier League over the 115 charges of alleged rule breaches.

The reigning Premier League champions are believed to be disputing both the legality of the charges brought against them and the barrister in charge of the process.

According to The Times, the dispute has arisen in relation to changes in the English top-flight’s rules, with the six-time champions of the belief that they should not apply to investigations into alleged rule breaches before their introduction.

In addition to that, the club are believed to have challenged the involvement of Murray Rosen KC, a self-proclaimed supporter of City’s direct title challengers Arsenal.

Rosen is the barrister at the head of the Premier League’s independent judicial panel – the person in charge of appointing a chair for the disciplinary commission with rules allowing him to appoint himself.

Arsenal will have no direct involvement in the commission which will decide City’s fate.

The Premier League’s statement said ‘commissions are independent of the Premier League and member clubs.

It is not anticipated that the case brought against Man City will produce a result for at least two to four years, with this most recent development set to delay proceedings even further.

City received legal papers from the Premier League in February initially announcing the charges over alleged financial rule breaches.

The club, however, made it abundantly clear that they would take all available steps to defend themselves from the charges, and claimed to have ‘irrefutable evidence’ to dispute the alleged breaches over the last 14 seasons.

There have been a number of changes to the top-flight’s rules over the past few campaigns, and it is as yet unclear which of the rule changes the challenge is directed at.

A change in the rules in February 2022 dictated that individuals must offer up information or documentation on request, as well as answer questions ‘comprehensively’ and on a ‘co-operative and open basis’.

The 2016-17 season saw a further change to guidelines, stating that all clubs must comply ‘in full’ with Premier League investigations and supply information requested by the competition.

However, should the charges of alleged breaches are proven, then there could be a raft of potential consequences for the club.

These could range from a points deduction to expulsion from the Premier League altogether.

The charges against the reigning champions relate to financial information regarding revenue, details of manager and player remuneration, UEFA regulations, profitability and sustainability, and co-operation with Premier League investigations.

Paul Pogba breaks down in tears as he gets injured again in first start for over a year

Paul Pogba broke down in tears after he was substituted with another injury during his first competitive start in over a year on Sunday night as Juventus beat Cremonese 2-0 at the Allianz Stadium.

The 30-year-old left Manchester United in the summer of 2022 and re-joined his old side Juventus on a free transfer but has barely played for the Italian giants this season due to injury.

His time at Old Trafford ended after he suffered a muscular injury and left the pitch during United’s 4-0 loss to Liverpool back in April 2022.

It was the last time he was named in the starting line-up for a competitive game of football.

After joining up with his former club, Pogba started a friendly game against Guadalajara in Juventus’ pre-season, but was only able to play 45 minutes of that match before another set back kept off the game until seven months later.

The French World Cup winner’s injuries made him unavailable for the World Cup. He has meanwhile only made nine competitive appearances for Juventus, racking up just 137 minutes this campaign.

After yesterday’s injury, the 30-year-old received treatment on the pitch before he was removed from the field, looking devastated and pulling his shirt over his head.

Barcelona beat Espanyol to win 27th LaLiga title

FC Barcelona claimed their 27th LaLiga title on Sunday after two first-half goals from Robert Lewandowski spurred them to a 4-2 defeat of city rivals Espanyol.

Barca moved to 85 points from 34 matches and extended their lead to an unassailable 14 points over second-placed Real Madrid.

They were the superior side against lowly Espanyol, who are second from bottom and fighting to avoid relegation and opened the scoring early with a close-range strike by Lewandowski.

Alejandro Balde, who put it on a plate for Lewandowski’s opening goal, scored Barca’s second with a tap-in from a Pedri cross in the 20th minute.

Lewandowski extended Barca’s lead five minutes before the break with another close-range finish from a Raphinha cross.

Defender Jules Kounde headed in Barca’s fourth in the 53rd minute before Javi Puado, and Joselu scored consolation goals for Espanyol.

Nigeria crash out of AFCON U-17 to miss World Cup

The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria have been eliminated from the ongoing U-17 African Cup Of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The Nigerians lost 2-1 to Burkina Faso in the quarter-final match held at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, Algiers, Algeria, on Thursday evening, May 11.

Burkina Faso found the back of the net when forward Camara slotted home from close range following sloppy play and missed chances from the Eaglets.

Camara later grabbed a brace from the penalty spot 12 minutes into the second half. Nigeria’s Abubakar Abdullahi gave the Golden Eaglets little hope in the 67th minute when he reduced his team’s deficit off a cross from substitute Daniel.

The 2 -1 result meant the Golden Eaglets won’t feature in the under-17 World Cup that would take place later this year, with Burkina Faso completing the quartet of teams to represent Africa in the tournament.

The other teams are Senegal, Mali, and Morocco.
