The police command in Ondo, on Tuesday, said it arrested two suspects for allegedly stoning a 35-year-old driver, Tope Olorunfemi, to death in Akure.
On Monday, a mob stoned Mr Olorunfemi to death for crushing two people to death and injuring six others with his vehicle after ramming into about five commercial motorcycles along Ijoka road by Sunday bus stop in Akure.
The mob set Mr Olorunfemi’s vehicle ablaze.Police command spokesperson, Olufunmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, while featuring on a live radio programme on Tuesday, said detectives had arrested two suspects over their alleged jungle justice meted out on the driver.
Ms Odunlami-Omisanya said one of the two arrested suspects allegedly masterminded the burning of Mr Olorunfemi’s car.
The officer, who said the suspects would be charged with murder and arson, appealed to the public not to take the law into their hands.
“As of now, no one can confirm if the dead young man in question was an internet fraudster. Rather than people around to have helped when the accident happened, some resolved to jungle justice by killing the young man and setting his car ablaze,” the police spokeswoman explained.
She added,
“We need to refrain from engaging in jungle justice, shun hearsay and report any incident to a nearby police station so that there will be peace in our community.”
