Uduak Inyang-Udoh appointed acting rector for YABATECH

The Chairman of the Governing Council, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has approved the appointment of Uduak Inyang-Udoh as the Acting Rector of YABATECH effective from Monday, January 30, 2023.

A statement issued by Joe Ejiofor, Deputy Registrar/Head of Public Relations, YABATECH, noted that the appointment was pending until the appointment of a substantive Rector.

He said that Mr Inyang-Udoh, a Chief Lecturer in the Department of Quantity Surveying, was until this appointment, the Deputy Rector (Administration).

He added that other previous positions held by Mr Inyang-Udoh were the Director, Yabatech Consult; Director, Academic Planning; Dean, School of Environmental Studies, and Head, of the Department of Quantity Surveying.

The tenure of the incumbent Rector, Obafemi Omokungbe, ended at midnight on January 29.

Meanwhile, Mr Ejiofor noted that the governing council had made a recommendation for the appointment of a new Rector to the appropriate authority at its meeting held on Nov. 25, 2022.

He said that the governing council, had yet to receive a response in this regard.

Suspected cultist shoots student dead in Yabatech

An unidentified student of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos was shot dead, Thursday evening, around 9 pm, by suspected cultist.

Our correspondent, who was in the school at the time of the incident, noted that the student was shot twice while other students ran for safety.

A student, Tayo Aina, noted that she was behind the student that was shot.In a jittery voice, she said, “I was going for night class because my final exam is tomorrow and the next thing I heard was a gunshot and the guy behind me fell.

“I can’t say exactly but they were about two to three guys who were standing and I could see one with a gun as I ran for safety.”

Another student, who only identified herself as Mujibat stated that the level of cult shootings and killings in the school had to be stopped.

She stated, “It was a day to our matric during my National Diploma days when someone was also killed. It’s not the first time this is happening and no development has been made towards the issue at all.”

Mujibat noted that she was also on her way to the night class when she heard gunshots and students running helter-skelter for safety.

Confirming the story, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the incident was true.He stated, “The DPO of the area already visited the scene and confirmed that the incident did happen.”

He also noted that further details would be released by the police after investigations.All efforts to reach the school’s Rector proved abortive.

Yabatech shut as College Director dies from COVID-19

The Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) has been shut down with the students ordered to vacate their hostels by Thursday, January 28, following the death of the College’s Director, Academic Planning Unit, M.A.O Omoighe, from COVID-19 complications.

The College medical centre has also been shut down for two weeks while those who had direct contacts with the late Director were told to undergo COVID-19 test and proceed on self-isolation while the lecturers have been instructed to commence online lectures immediately.

The Academic Board of the institution, in a circular, said:

“The College should resort to online teaching immediately, for smooth lecturing, lecturers should provide lecture notes to students beforehand and utilise the online period for explanations of the lecture notes; lecturers are to adopt acceptable modality for the online lecturing.

The Centre for Information Technology and Management (CITM) and the Flexible Skill Development (FSD) should work out improved modalities to enhance e-learning in the college.

“Any meeting of more than 10 persons should be held virtually. Students should vacate the hotels latest Thursday, January 28, 2021. Management will make arrangements to decontaminate the college in due course. This will be done on weekends. Offices are to operate at half capacity.

“All administrative staff should come to the office on alternate days. Any staff that manifests malaria symptoms should self-isolate immediately for two weeks and go for COVID-19 test.

“The academic planning unit should be closed down for two weeks. All staff of the unit should go on isolation and carry out COVID-19 test. The unit should be de-decontaminated before reopening.

“The Medical Centre should be closed for two weeks and thereafter disinfected and staff that had direct contacts with the deceased should self-isolate and carry outCOVID-19 test.”
