I can’t be cowed, ban on open grazing final – Wike

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Saturday declared his readiness to implement ban on open grazing in the state.

Governors of states in Southern Nigeria had on Tuesday banned open grazing and movement of cattle on foot in the region.

They also demanded the devolution of powers, fiscal federalism, and state policing among others at a meeting held in Asaba, Delta State.

Some individuals including the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan had knocked the governors over some of the decisions taken at the meeting.

However, Wike who spoke at a grand reception held in his honour by the people of the Ogoni ethnic nationality in Bori, Khana local government area of the state, said he cannot be cowed by anyone from implementing the ban on open grazing in Rivers State.

The governors stressed that he has taken further steps to enforce the decision.

He said: “Nobody can cow me. The government cannot cow me. I will say my mind and I will do what is right for my people. Nobody can kill me before my time. I will die the day God wants me to die.

“Let me also tell those who are criticizing Southern governors’ ban on open grazing, let me inform them that I have taken further steps to enforce what the southern governors resolved in Asaba.

We have taken a decision and there is no going back. Enough is enough. We (Southerners) are not second-class citizens of this country. We also own this country and we must partake in what is happening in this country.”

Wike warns Nigerians to hold FG accountable ‘if Ortom is assassinated’

Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, has revealed that the federal government should be held culpable, in the event of the assassination of his Benue counterpart, Samuel Ortom.

Ripples Nigeria had reported on Saturday, March 20, that gunmen suspected to be herdsmen attacked Ortom’s convoy while on a visit to his farm.

According to Ortom, the armed men, numbering about 15, trailed his convoy to the river bank where he was on foot with his security details and opened fire on them.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued by his special assistant on media, Kelvin Ebiri, Wike said the federal government should be “prepared to bury Nigeria” if harm befalls Ortom.

Wike added that if the Benue governor is killed, the country could be plunged into another civil war.

If you kill Ortom, then be prepared to bury Nigeria,” he was quoted as saying.

“If anything happens to Governor Ortom, the Federal Government will be held responsible and they should be prepared that there will be no more Nigeria.”

Wike added that it is disturbing that the lives of incumbent governors are threatened.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also called on the police to investigate the attack on Ortom’s convoy and arrest the assailants.

Why retired service chiefs failed –Gov Wike

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has stated why the immediate past security chiefs appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari failed in their task of securing the nation.

Governor Wike who was speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics said that the security chiefs did not do well because they lost focus and delved into politics.

Wike therefore cautioned the newly appointed service chiefs to shun politics and avoid the path of their predecessors.

He said; “Instead of concentrating on the security of the nation, the service chiefs were very much involved in politics.

“This was the problem we had with the previous chiefs, they were involved in politics rather than face the security of the nation.

“Nobody can deny that fact; the moment you politicize security, then you are bound to have problems,” Wike added.

According to him, no meaningful changes will be seen from the new appointees if they toe the path of their predecessors.

He said, “The new people that are appointed must ask themselves, what is our agenda? Is our agenda to continue with where the last service chiefs stopped, or to make sure we improve?”

I won’t leave behind any uncompleted project for my successor – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, vowed on Saturday he would not leave behind any uncompleted project for his successor.

The governor, according to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kelvin Ebiri, stated this at a reception organized in honour of the former governor of the state, Celestine Omehia, who was conferred with special chieftaincy title of Eze Gbuwara Uzor 1 of Ikwerre at Isiopko town, Ikwerre local government area of the state.

Wike assured the people of the state that works would begin on the Trans-Kalabari Road soon.

According to him, the project will ease the transportation difficulties experienced by the people of Kalabari.

The governor said he was determined to make the people of Rivers happier than he met them when he assumed office in 2015.

Wike said: “I and the Deputy Governor, together with the Chairman of the Rivers State Elders Council, have agreed on how the Trans-Kalabari Road will follow.

“Those who said we don’t want to do anything in the Kalabari area, today they are sending me text messages. They are thanking me and I said to them don’t thank me because their thanking me is temporary. They are not always stable.

“So many people have said that I am discriminating in terms of projects. Now, when they saw us go to the various Local Governments to commission projects, they don’t say anything again. By February 10th, 2021, we will start another round of project inauguration.

“When we were doing Sakpeenwa -Bori (Ogoni) Road, some politicians in our party were carrying propaganda. They were saying that we are not going to finish that road.

“But, they now have one of the best roads in the state. Some of them were even ashamed to watch it on television. We have also agreed that from Sakpeenwa to Bori, we are awarding a fresh contract to take it to Kono town. Which government has done that to anybody or town?

“I have also told Isiopko people, don’t be impatient, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc is already taking measurement and we will link you up to Isiodu town.

“No one project awarded by us will be left abandoned. I won’t leave any uncompleted project for my successor. I will leave office as a proud Ikwerre son who will feel satisfied that I made the people happy when I was governor.”

Wike will complete his eight-year rule in Rivers in 2023.

Wike donates N500m for rebuilding of Sokoto market

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, Wednesday announced his donation of N500 million to the Sokoto State Government to support the rebuilding of the Sokoto Central Market which was ravaged by fire on Tuesday.

This was disclosed by Governor Aminu Tambuwal’s special adviser on media and publicity, Malam Muhammad Bello, in a statement made available to newsmen.

The Rivers governor, while expressing his shock and sadness over the incident, stated that the donation was to support the victims of the inferno and help in rebuilding the market.

Wike noted that anything that affects Sokoto also affects Rivers as a result of the age-long relationship they both share.

Tambuwal, while inspecting the scene alongside Wike, revealed that the market had 16,000 shops out of which at least 60 per cent were affected by the fire.

He said, “when the fire broke out the relevant state government agencies and those of the Federal Government within the state were mobilised to control it.

After inspecting the scene, Wike and his entourage also paid a courtesy visit to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, who condoled with the state government and the victims over the incident.

Wike imposes 24-hour curfew on Port Harcourt over cult clashes

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has imposed a 24-hour curfew on some parts of Port Harcourt following the upsurge in cult activities in the city.

The curfew is expected to last two weeks.

The governor, who announced the curfew in a statewide broadcast on Sunday, said the decision affects areas around the Okoro-No-Odu flyover in Rumuokoro, in the Obio/Akpor local government area of the state.

He said the curfew takes effect from Monday, adding that that the state government would deal appropriately with anyone who disturbs peace and security in the state.

Wike said the state government has repeatedly warned misguided youths to stay away from cultism because of its abhorrent anti-social effect on society.

He said: “As part of measures to tackle this menace, therefore, the government has imposed a 24-hour total curfew for two weeks on the entire area along and around the Okoro-No-Du flyover up to one-kilometer radius from Saint Emmanuel Anglican Church, Rumuokoro, extending to the Rumuodomaya Slaughter and Local Government daily market with effect from Monday, 23rd November, 2020.

“Consequently, no form of trading, human or vehicular movement is allowed within the afore-mentioned restricted areas until further notice. Only staff and vehicles belonging to Julius Berger Nigeria Limited are exempted from the curfew and associated restrictions on movement so that construction work on the Okoro-Nu-Odu flyover is not stalled.

“We urge all citizens to be part of the efforts to curb cultism in the state by reporting any suspicious cult activity, including gatherings and initiations in or around their neighbourhoods to the security agencies for immediate action.”

Wike makes U-turn, joins #EndSARS protests

After over three hours of wait by #EndSARS protesters who converged at the Government House, Port Harcourt, for Governor Nyesom Wike to address them, the latter later joined the protesters and called for the total reform of the Nigeria Police Force.

The governor, who had banned #EndSARS protests in the state last night, made a U-turn on Tuesday.

Wike while addressing the protesters said though he was not in support of the Tuesday protest, he noted that no governor in the country had protested against the security outfit as he has done.

He said, “I never supported us to be here. I took an oath to protect the lives and property of people of the state. The blood of Rivers of people matters to me.

“Rivers State has suffered in the hands of SARS. When we raised the alarm of SARS activities, they did not give attention but it has now happened in other places.

“No governor in this country can say they have challenged SARS the way we have done. When there was so much kidnapping in this state, I raised an alarm to the federal government.

“I am the only governor that has come out to start end SARS protest. No other state. We have lost so many people in this state to SARS. No state supported us. SARS has killed our people a lot,” he stated.
