Gov Umahi accuses Ebonyi PDP, senator, for masterminding shootings in name of IPOB

Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi has blamed the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), an unnamed Senator in the state as well as some officers of the Nigeria Police of carrying out shootings in the state in the name of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Umahi who made the allegations on Sunday at a church service at Government House Chapel in Abakiliki, the state capital, said the shooting along the Enugu-Abakaliki express road while President Muhammadu Buhari was on a state visit, said the shootings were not carried out by IPOB or its militia wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), but orchestrated by the PDP and the Senator using the police.

There was a report of shooting along the Enugu-Abakaliki express road when President Muhammadu Buhari was in the state; the shooting was done by the PDP people; the shooting at the Secretariat was also carried out by the PDP and a sitting Senator in this state and for the past two weeks, they have been shooting in that area, is that how they want to contest and win elections in Ebonyi State?

“There were even questions as to why there was no announcement of IPOB about the President’s coming; the answer is I don’t know, refer the matter to God, everything worked out perfectly well and that could only come through fasting and prayers.”

Umahi also claimed that the gunmen who attacked a police station in Ezza South and North were caught with weapons belonging to the police and a vehicle carrying a Senator’s name and PDP logo.

“When the police stations were attacked in Ezza South and North, the police guns were missing, when the shooting was happening and one of the thugs were arrested, with a bus of a Senator painted in PDP colour, with his name boldly written on it, do you know what was discovered, among other guns and ammunition was the police gun.

“How can you come to a state and you will be shooting as if there is no government, and you are carrying police people and then your thugs are shooting, it won’t happen again”, the APC presidential aspirant said.

This follows his emergence recently as the chairman of the ruling party.

His resignation was announced in a letter to the Senate, which was read aloud by Senate President Ahmad Lawan during Tuesday’s legislative session.

Adamu noted that his resignation was prompted by his recent election as the new chairman of the APC and it takes effect from April 1, 2022.

The letter read, “It is with utmost respect and appreciation I inform you that consequent upon my victory as National Chairman at the just concluded convention of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), on the 26th of March, 2022, I hereby resign formally as the Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District with effect from 1st April, 2022.

“I feel a sense of duty and obligation to convey through this letter, my appreciation for the cooperation and guidance I received from you as Chairman of the National Assembly throughout my official and private association with you.

“Your ability to forge the deep-rooted bi-partisan approach on all issues which you chaired deliberations speaks volumes of your chemistry as a leader.

Indeed, you have roundly proved at every stage that the three arms of government are truly arms of the same national government.

“You have stirred the National Assembly to do the bidding of our great party without prejudice to the other parties irrespective of their representation.

“In so doing, you have been able not to only carry your colleagues at the leadership level of the Senate, but endeavored to be a family head in the real sense of the word to all members of the Ninth Senate.

“My resignation will leave me with full memories of the solidarity and camaraderie that you have been able to forge over the eleven years I’ve been in the Senate.

“To say I will miss you and my colleagues in the Ninth Senate will be an understatement, but I gain consolation in the fact that my call to a higher pedestal of service will keep us all within reach of one another.

“Kindly convey my wishes to all my colleagues that they should kindly spare some time in joining hands with us at the headquarters of our great party, the APC, to do the needful in our efforts to deliver 2023 Presidential and General Elections to our party and its followers.”

Plateau Senator sheds tears as suspected herdsmen attack community, kill 13, raze houses

The Senator representing Plateau North Senatorial district at the National Assembly, I.D Gyang, broke down in tears during an on the spot visit to the Irigwe communities in the Bassa Local Government Area of the state where suspected Fulani herdsmen have been laying siege since Saturday.

The attacks have so far claimed 13 lives with over 250 houses burnt down, while many people have been injured and properties worth millions of naira have been destroyed.

During the visit on Monday morning, Senator Gyang decried the loss of lives of his constituents and the wanton destruction of their properties.

In a statement signed by the lawmaker’s Special Assistant on Media and Protocol, Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, and made available to Ripples Nigeria, Gyang described the attack as quite pathetic and unfortunate.

“This recent attack on my constituency has become a pattern, an ugly one at that. It has become the norm than the exception in bloody and highly destructive attacks on host communities in Plateau North Senatorial District where killer herdsmen kill and destroy both lives and livelihood with reckless abandon.

The most recent is the attack on Irigwe villages which began on Saturday 31/07/21, where seven persons were killed, many injured, over 200 houses burnt and large farm crops destroyed.

“As at today, Monday, about 13 people have been killed with several farmlands and livelihoods destroyed.

“The burnt villages are Zanwra, Nche-Tahu, Rikwe-Rishe A&B, Ri-Dogo, Nchu-Nzhwa all under Kpatenvie of Kpachudu/Jebu Community.

“Most disturbing is the fact that repeated attacks have all been preceded by widely circulated intelligence information as to the date, time and location of the attacks.

“With such prior information, the belated or non response of the security agencies has been called to question.

Consequently, Senator I. D. Gyang Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Defense is urging the OPSH, Police, and DSS to discharge their duties dispassionately and provide protection to endangered communities of Plateau North and ensure that all threats to peace are decisively dealt with.”
