Farm labourer sentenced to life imprisonment for raping teenager in Lagos

A farm labourer, Isiaka Adeoye, who raped a 17-year-old girl was on Wednesday October 12, sentenced to life imprisonment, by Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court, Ikeja, Lagos State.

Asides ruling that the prosecution proved the charge of defilement against the convict beyond reasonable doubt, Justice Soladoye also held that the testimony of the survivor corroborated the evidence of the investigating police officer and the medical reports.

The Judge who said that the judgement will serve as a deterrent to others, added that there’s no substantial contradiction to raise reasonable doubt in prosecuting the defendant.

The Judge said;

“I believe the testimony of the survivor in total as she eloquently and brilliantly told the court that the defendant had a c*nd*m on before he had s*x with her.

“The survivor told the court that her aunt sent her to do some work for her on her farm where the defendant works and that the defendant sent her to fetch water.

When she came back, she met the defendant drunk and he asked her if she wanted to have fun and he ended up having s*x with her.

“She said it was the farm manager that reported the case to the survivor’s sister when she narrated her ordeal in the hands of the defendant.

“The evidence of the three prosecution witnesses has sufficient proof that the defendant had s*xual intercourse with the survivor.

The address of the defence, no matter how beautifully written, cannot amount to vindicating the charge of defilement that the defendant truly committed.

“The evidence before this court shows that the defendant forcefully had s*x with the survivor as this is corroborated in the medical report that there were bruises in her private parts, which can be the result of a struggle between her and the defendant.

“This should serve as a deterrent to others as adults should not take undue advantage of young children and defile their purity. The defendant was busy telling lies before this court, but the court is not fooled.

“The defendant is hereby found guilty as charged and sentenced to life imprisonment. He should have his name written in the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register.”

Outlining the need for sexual education, moral re-awakening and training of underage children to maintain sexual purity in society, Justice Soladoye added;

“The survivor, in this case, was insensitive as a 17-year-old girl ought to be proactive and run for her life when she saw a c*nd*m on the private parts of the defendant.

“Instead, she waited until the defendant forcefully had his way and had s*x with her.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Sunday, said the suspect was arrested following a complaint lodged by the victim at the Ibara Police Station.

Oyeyemi added that the victim, who was accompanied by some So-Safe-Corps’ men, reported that she was sleeping in a room at Amolaso, Abeokuta, when her father raped her around 11.30pm.

He said, “The victim said, having observed that others were fast asleep, the father suddenly grabbed her and forcefully had sex with her with a threat to kill her if she refused to allow him.

“Upon the report, the DPO Ibara division, CSP Bernard Egbondiya, quickly detailed his detectives to the scene, where the suspect was promptly arrested.

“On interrogation, the father of six, who confessed to the crime, pleaded for forgiveness, claiming not to know what came over him when he committed the crime.”

The PPRO, however, said the state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered the transfer of the suspect to State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution while the victim was taken to general hospital for medical treatment.

He had s*x with me ‘hundreds of times’ from the age of 15 to 18 – R Kelly’s ex-goddaughter tells jury

A woman who has been central to R. Kelly’s legal troubles for more than two decades testified on Thursday, August 18 that the R&B singer had s*x with her ‘hundreds’ of times before she turned 18 years old, starting when she was just 15.

Jane – the pseudonym for the now 37-year-old woman at Kelly’s trial on child pornography and obstruction of justice charges told jurors that in the late 1990s when she was 13, she asked the Grammy award-winning singer to be her godfather because she saw him as a mentor.

After some weeks, Kelly started calling her to say s*xual things.

She said he first touched her breasts when she was around 14 at a Chicago recording studio, and that around that time, he ‘started penetration’ at his North Side Chicago home.

Jane said she was 15 when they first had intercourse. Kelly, 55, would have been around 30 years old at the time.Sometimes, they would have s*x with other teenage girls she would recruit at Kelly’s request, she testified,

With her testimony on Thursday, Jane served as the first former victim to speak out about what she allegedly endured in the R&B star’s ongoing child pornography trial.

He stands charged in Chicago federal court with enticing of minors for s*x, producing child pornography and rigging his 2008 pornography trial.Prosecutors allege that R. Kelly paid off and threatened Jane and her family to ensure that she didn’t testify at a similar 2008 trial.

She didn’t testify and he was ultimately acquitted.Kelly, 55, is serving a 30-year prison sentence for his conviction in a New York court earlier this year on other federal charges alleging he used his fame to s*xually abuse fans over several decades.

Jane said she was in a music group at the time, and Kelly — a friend of her aunt’s — attended one of their performances, and gave her good feedback. ‘It made me feel happy that such a successful person was saying I was gifted, so I was excited,’ Jane testified, according to the Chicago Tribune.

She said her aunt then advised her to ask Kelly to be her godfather, explaining her aunt told her ‘I should sit on his lap and rub his head and ask him to play that role in my life.’Jane said she obliged, and Kelly ‘chuckled a bit, and said “yes.

“But soon the relationship became s*xual. In at least one case, WGN-TV reports, she said Kelly asked her what color her underwear was, and told her he was pleasuring himself as they spoke.

Kelly then gave her alcohol for the first time when she was 14, Jane said, and she began drinking heavily.’It would help me loosen up, kind of take me away from the moment,’ she said.By the time she was 15, she said, they started having s*x, and when asked by a prosecutor how she knew her exact age, Jane replied:

‘Because that’s when I lost my virginity.’From there, Jane said, they would have intercourse in Kelly’s home on West George Street, at his Near West Side recording studio, on tour buses and in hotels.

Asked by a prosecutor how she would know what to do s*xually, Jane answered: ‘He would tell me what to do.’

And when asked how many times they had s*x before she turned 18, she answered quietly: ‘Uncountable times…hundreds.’ Unlike at the 2008 trial, Jane is now cooperating with prosecutors and is a pivotal witness.

Prosecutors say Kelly shot an explicit video of Jane in a log cabin-themed room at his North Side Chicago home between 1998 and 2000. In it, the girl is heard calling the man ‘daddy.’

Prosecutors say Kelly, who rose from poverty on Chicago’s South Side to become a star singer, knew a conviction in 2008 would effectively end his life as he knew it, and so he conspired to fix that trial.

According to prosecutors, Kelly told Jane and her parents to leave Chicago, paying for them to travel to the Bahamas and Cancun, Mexico.

When they returned, prosecutors say Kelly sought to isolate Jane, moving her around to different hotels. When called before a state grand jury looking into the video, Jane, her father and mother denied it was her in it.

On June 13, 2008, when he was acquitted on all counts of child pornography, some of the jurors told reporters after the trial that they weren’t convinced that the female in the video was who state prosecutors said she was. Kelly, who has denied any wrongdoing, has been trailed for decades by complaints and allegations about his s*xual behavior.

The scrutiny intensified after the #MeToo era and the 2019 six-part documentary ‘Surviving R. Kelly.’Kelly also faces four counts of enticement of minors for s*x – one each for four other accusers. They, too, are expected to testify.

Prosecutors also say they have evidence of at least three videos showing Kelly having s*x with underage girls.

Lagos, Ekiti men bag life imprisonment for raping minors

Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Lagos State Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on Wednesday sentenced a man, Ayokunle Bailey, to life imprisonment for defiling a 15-year-old girl.

According to the state prosecution team, Olusola Soneye and Olufunke Adegoke, the convict committed the offence on December 18, 2017, in an uncompleted building around the Alaka area of Mushin, Lagos State.

The defendant was charged with sexual defilement, an offence which contravenes Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

According to the prosecution team, the victim visited her grandmother on the fateful day.

While playing with other children outside the house, the convict lured her into an uncompleted building and forcefully had sex with her.

The prosecution said the convict was later arrested after the survivor walked home with blood dripping from her private parts and the defendant was identified by the survivor, who informed her aunt about the incident.

Justice Soladoye said the prosecution proved the charge of defilement against the convict.

She explained that the convict was crude and unkind, adding that he messed up the survivor’s purity and innocence.

She said, “The defendant is rough and selfish and the survivor gave her testimony truthfully, cogently, positively and brilliantly. She was brave.

“The story of the defendant is dishonest and full of lies. He is a reckless and ruthless person.

“The defendant, having been found guilty as charged is sentenced to life imprisonment without the option of fine.”

In a related development, an Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti division, has sentenced a 50-year-old man, Usman Tajudeen, to life imprisonment for raping a four-year-old girl.

The defendant was tried before the court on one count of rape and found guilty.

The charge read, “That you, Usman Tajudeen, on August 21, 2020, at Ikere Ekiti, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did rape a four-year-old girl.”

The prosecutor, K.S. Adeyemo, said the offence was contrary to Section 31(2) of the Child’s Right Law, Cap.C7 Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

In her statement to the police, the victim said, “Daddy Latifat (the defendant), who is living at our house, took me to his sitting room. He said I should sit on his lap; he removed my pants and put his something (penis) where I urinate. He used to call me to his sitting room to do it.”

Also, in her testimony before the court, the victim’s mother said, “I was where I was making cassava flour and my daughter went to excrete. When I went to pack the faeces, I noticed blood in the faeces.

“Thereafter, I checked her anus and saw blood coming out of her private parts. I was afraid. When I inquired from her, she said it was Daddy Latifat that put his organ (penis) in her private parts.”

The convict, who spoke in his defence through his counsel, Tope Salam, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.

In the court judgment, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye said, “The prosecutor has established before the court that the defendant had sexual intercourse with the minor without her consent and therefore committed the offence of rape as charged.

“In all, the prosecution has proved this case beyond reasonable doubt against the defendant. The sentence for the offence of rape under the Child Rights Law is mandatory; he is sentenced to life imprisonment.”

Death Penalty!!!

Bangladesh to introduce death penalty for rape

Members of a feminist group take part in an ongoing protest in front of the parliamentary building, demanding justice for the alleged gang rape of a woman in Noakhali, southern district of Bangladesh, amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in Dhaka, Bangladesh, October 10, 2020.
image captionA brutal gang rape last week led to protests in Bangladesh over the weekend

Bangladesh is to introduce the death penalty for rape cases, following days of protests about the country’s high level of sexual violence against women.

Law Minister Anisul Haq explained that the president would issue an ordinance on Tuesday making it law.

There was widespread outrage in Bangladesh last week after footage of a brutal gang assault on a 37-year-old woman went viral on social media.

It was the case of one 37-year-old last week which sparked the recent protests and in many ways forced the government to take this action. The UN has now weighed in, saying the gang rape in Noakhali underlined the “state of social, behavioural and structural misogyny” in Bangladesh.

Though alarming but truthful. At least 1,000 rapes have been reported in Bangladesh this year.

But many cases go unreported because women fear they will be stigmatised, according to human rights advocates, and in cases that are reported conviction rates are extremely low. Protesters galvanised by last week’s viral video have demanded faster trials and changes to the way rape cases are prosecuted.

An investigation by Bangladesh’s National Human Rights Commission found that the woman in the viral video, who was attacked in the southeastern district of Noakhalim, had been raped repeatedly over time and terrorised. Eight men were arrested after the video emerged.

Protesters called for the death penalty in response to recent high-profile cases of assault

In a separate case another woman was allegedly gang raped last week in a hostel in the northern district of Sylhet, leading to the arrest of several members of the student wing of the ruling party.

Furthermore, Bangladesh was rocked over the weekend by an unprecedented level of protest. Demonstrators carried signs reading “Hang the rapists” and “No mercy to rapists”. In the capital Dhaka, a mock gallows was erected by protesters.

Responding directly to the protests, the government decided to make the change by way of an ordinance, since parliament is not sitting – effectively passing it directly into law.
